OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW NETWORK

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah’s new cable network OWN will debut in January 2011 — eight months before Oprah Winfrey’s syndicated talk show airs its final episode and three years after the joint venture with Discovery Communications was originally formed.

“Oprah has been nourishing people through her television show for nearly 25 years, a legacy that has touched millions the world over,” said Christina Norman, CEO of OWN. “She is the life force behind OWN and will be guiding the effort for this completely new 24-hour television experience premiering in January 2011.”

OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network), which had a full-blown upfront presentation to advertisers in May, was originally expected to launch by the end of this year. Then it was pushed to 2010, and now 2011. The channel will debut in about 80 million homes, rebranding what is currently the Discovery Health Channel.

On Winfrey’s show Friday, she said of her talk show departure: “This show has been my life. And I love it enough to know when it’s time to say good-bye. Twenty-five years feels right in my bones and it feels right in my spirit. It’s the perfect number — the exact right time. So I hope that you will take this 18-month ride with me right through to the final show. So, the countdown to the end of ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ starts now and until that day in 2011 when it ends, I intend to soak up every meaningful, joy-filled moment with you.”

MICHAEL JACKSON WINS FOUR AMA AWARDS

Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson made history by posthumously winning four American Music Awards on Sunday night, but he couldn’t beat Taylor Swift as the year’s favorite artist and the evening’s top winner.

The 19-year-old took the show’s top award, giving Jackson his only loss of the night, and giving her five trophies in all.

“Music has never been ultimately about competition,” she said as she accepted the top prize via satellite from London, where she is to perform Monday. “To even be mentioned in a category with Michael Jackson, who we will miss and love forever, is an unimaginable honor.”

Swift was also named favorite female pop/rock and country artist and favorite adult-contemporary artist. Her album, “Fearless,” won favorite country album. Jackson was voted favorite male artist in the pop/rock and soul/R&B categories. His 2003 greatest-hits album, “Number Ones,” also won favorite album in both categories, bringing his career AMA total to 23, making him the most honored artist in AMA history.

The victories came during a performance-filled show that closed with an S&M-themed, sexually charged performance by Adam Lambert (which included him shoving a male dancer’s face into his crotch).

Jackson’s trophies were accepted by his brother Jermaine, who paid tribute to his late brother by wearing glittery white glove. He thanked “Allah for blessing my entire family” and named each of his brothers and sisters.

He said the message of Michael, who died in June at age 50, is more important than any award.

“The message that Michael had will live on forever,” he said. “He saw good in everyone and he wanted everyone to do good. He always started with love.”

Jackson’s victories were among the highlights of the evening, which also featured an eye-popping performance by Lady Gaga, a special award for Whitney Houston and that jaw-dropping number from Lambert, who traded in his “American Idol” image for sex, leather and chains Sunday.

JANET HONORS MICHAEL IN DANCE AND SONG

Janet Jackson at AMA 2009

Janet Jackson hit the stage of the American Music Awards last night and showed she’s in control — and served up shout-outs to her late brother Michael.

Looking fit and sexy in snug tan pants, top and boots, she performed a medley of her greatest hits, beginning with the 1986 chart topper “Control,” followed by “Miss You Much,” a popular tune from 1989.

As Jackson grooved and shook her long hair to the celebrity-studded audience, which included members of her own famous family, the lyrics seemed to be directed at the King of Pop.

“I miss ya much (boy-oh-I miss you much),” she sang. “I really miss you much.”

Jackson’s 7-plus-minute set included her suggestive tune, “If,” along with a sample of her new release “Make Me,” in which she invites an unseen listener to “make me groove, show me what you do, make me move.”

The 43-year-old pop star finished her act with a happy version of “Together Again” — another message to Michael.

She looked to the sky as she sang, “Everywhere I go, every smile I see, I know you are there, smilin’ back at me.”

BIG DIDDY PARTY ON THE WAY

Diddy

Sean “Diddy” Combs turned the big 4-0 on Nov. 4, but he is waiting until this Thursday (Nov. 19) to celebrate the birthday milestone in grand style.

According to the New York Post’s Page Six, Diddy has booked the Grand Ballroom inside of New York’s Plaza Hotel for the extravaganza.

The mogul hired event planner Bronson Van Wyck to create a “fantasy dreamland” with fashion installations, a labyrinth, performance art and a display by “wizard of light” Bentley Meeker, who promises the lighting will grow “dimmer and sexier,” punctuated by a “blizzard of light.”

The guest list for what Diddy is calling “the party of the century” includes Queen Latifah, Russell Simmons, Spike Lee, Zac Posen, Lil’ Kim and a “very special” musical guest.

Meet The Browns

Tyler Perry’s TBS sitcom “Meet the Browns” will be syndicated in more than 70 percent of the U.S. next fall.

Syndicator Debmar-Mercury has cleared the comedy for a September debut on several major station groups, including Fox, Tribune, Weigel, CBS, Capital, Cox, Meredith, Granite and Belo.

“Browns,” based on Perry’s 2004 movie, ranks as the No. 1 series on TBS this season among adults aged 18-49, a demographic coveted by advertisers. About 40 episodes have aired since it premiered in January.

TONI BRAXTON HAS SPLIT FROM HER HUSBAND

Welcome to Solid Gold Soul

OVER AFTER EIGHT YEARS

Toni Braxton

SINGER TONI Braxton has split from her husband Keri Lewis after eight years of marriage.

The Unbreak My Heart hitmaker has two sons with her spouse, and she revealed in an exclusive interview with The Voice that she’s not entirely sure why the marriage broke down. Some say the last straw wa following a sultry onstage kiss at a recent awards show.

Toni Braxton and Trey Songz

“I’m newly separated – no-one really knows what went wrong,” Braxton said. “My husband and I are still cool – we get along great. But that could become challenging. If things go further, you may read about some things… things will have to be split and all of that.”

However, the US songstress is hopeful that the split won’t become a messy battle that’s played out in the public eye.

“Oh, it’ll nothing like that,” she said. “We were friends for years before we started dating and we’ve been married for almost nine years. I’m a little sad about it and I can’t see anything down the line because it’s all so new. We’re sorting different things right now.”

Braxton has been hit by a string of personal dramas in recent times. In 2008, she was diagnosed with the heart condition, microvascular angina, which forced her to scrap a series of concerts in Las Vegas. She has since been facing financial difficulties and is currently embroiled in a legal battle with her insurance company, as the firm has refused to pay out on the axed shows. But Braxton is confident that she won’t be left short.

“Be it the underwriter of the insurance company, someone is going to pay me,” she insists. “I spent thousands of dollars on insurance and somebody needs to pay me my money!”

NEW YORK WOMAN SHOUTS DOWN CHRIS BROWN

Chris Brown

Chris Brown got an earful of judgment from a woman during a public promo appearance in New York last week.

While leaving a crowded event at Footaction in NY, a woman in the throng of people began shouting, “F**king beater” and “I hope someone beats the f**king crap out of you!”

She ended her tirade by looking into a pap’s camera and saying, “Chris Brown is a f**king p**sy who can’t stand up for himself!”

Chris in a bright yellow hat, just continued walking out of the store – as some of his fans defended him by shouting, “Smack that bi*** up.”

JANET BLAMES THE DOCTOR

JANET VOICES HER OPINION

janet_jackson_m

JANET

We wondered how long it would take. Now we know. Michael Jackson’s baby sister, Janet, is finally speaking out about his death and who she thinks is responsible.

It’s no surprise that she’s putting the blame squarely on Dr. Conrad Murray. In an interview with ABC’s Robin Roberts, Janet says the doctor should no longer be allowed to practice medicine.

“He was the one that was administering. I think he is responsible.”

As has been reported, Dr. Murray, Michael personal physician, remains the focus of a manslaughter investigation into the pop star’s death. Murray has admitted to administering the anesthetic propofol, but has denied giving Michael anything that should have killed him.

Janet, who hasn’t spoken out or shared her thoughts about the death of Michael, opened up to Roberts in an exclusive interview that will air, Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 10pm E/P.

“It’s been a tough year,” she said. “You have your days where it’s just really — it’s hard to believe. And a day doesn’t go by that I don’t think about him.”

Jackson recounted the details of the morning of June 25, the day that rocked her world.

“I was at my house in New York. You know, another day. Another morning. And I get a call … [my assistant] said, ‘Your brother’s been taken to the hospital. It’s on CNN right now.’ I called everyone. There’s a line busy or — someone wasn’t picking up. I spoke to mother. I spoke to Tito. I spoke to my nephew Austin. I spoke to my sister La Toya.”

“I told them to call me when they got to the hospital. And I remember thinking nobody’s calling me back, so I tried calling again, and that’s how I found out that he was no longer … I couldn’t believe it,” she said.

Jackson told Roberts she and the entire family were in a state of disbelief.

ATLANTA HOUSEWIVES PEACEFUL??

ARE THE ATLANTA HOUSEWIVES GETTING ALONG?

Nene

The love-hate relationship between NeNe Leakes and Kim Zolciak of Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” treads calm waters for now, but anything could happen at any moment to turn the tide.

“We’re trying to be peaceful with each other,” Leakes told People.com Thursday at Tao Las Vegas. “Kim and I have an up-and-down relationship. Don’t be surprised if we have a falling out again. That’s just how we are.”

The two have had some famous battles over the past year – including an alleged incident in which NeNe choked Kim. Leakes says their current detente is about as much as anyone can expect.

“We’re not friends and we will probably never be friends,” Leakes said, “but we’re just trying to be respectful.”

GROUP WANTS TO CREATE A BEATLES LIKE SHOW FOR MICHAEL

Cirque du Soleil is reportedly circling Michael Jackson’s estate with plans to produce a Las Vegas-style show featuring the late entertainer’s music.

“The Canadian-based company is said to be working hard to convince all the parties that they can do for Michael what they did for the Beatles with the “Love” show at the Mirage Hotel,” The Hollywood Reporter’s Roger Friedman wrote Wednesday.

“Right now, Cirque du Soleil is prepping an Elvis Presley show, ‘Viva Elvis,’ which will start performances next month at the ARIA Hotel in Las Vegas,” he added. “Once that show is off the ground, the Jackson estate will confer with the Cirque folks.”
