Cirque du Soleil is reportedly circling Michael Jackson’s estate with plans to produce a Las Vegas-style show featuring the late entertainer’s music.

“The Canadian-based company is said to be working hard to convince all the parties that they can do for Michael what they did for the Beatles with the “Love” show at the Mirage Hotel,” The Hollywood Reporter’s Roger Friedman wrote Wednesday.

“Right now, Cirque du Soleil is prepping an Elvis Presley show, ‘Viva Elvis,’ which will start performances next month at the ARIA Hotel in Las Vegas,” he added. “Once that show is off the ground, the Jackson estate will confer with the Cirque folks.”

Whitney Houston

The American Music Awards has booked Whitney Houston to both perform and receive the honorary International Artist Award during the ceremony airing Nov. 22 on ABC.

Houston will sing “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” from her latest album, “I Look to You.” The performance will be her first time singing at the awards show in a decade.

“We’re honored to have Whitney Houston back on the AMA stage after ten years,” producer Larry Klein says. “She has won the most AMAs of any female artist in history and is without a doubt an international superstar.”

The International Artist Award has been given out sporadically in the 36-year history of the awards and recognizes artists who “have gone beyond the borders of their own country to be acknowledged for their superstar status around the globe.”

Past recipients include Michael Jackson, Led Zeppelin, Rod Stewart, the Bee Gees, Madonna, Beyonce and Aerosmith

POWELL ADVISED PRESIDENT TO TAKE HIS TIME

www.freddiebell.wordpress.com

Solid Gold Soul

November 12, 2009

Welcome to Solid Gold Soul

THE PRESIDENT IS DEVELOPING HIS OWN PLAN FOR THE WAR FRONTS

colin-powell

Colin Powell

Was General Powell’s advice to President Obama on Afghanistan taken to heart? One could argue that it was or one could argue that it was just co-incidence because here’s the latest “bombshell,” as it’s being described by the DailyBeast.com:

A senior Obama administration official tells MSNBC that the president will reject all of the options that have been presented to him by his national-security team, and that instead he will demand clarifications on when U.S. troops would turn over responsibility for the country to the Afghan government. The sticking point appears to be timelines: President Obama wants to make clear that the U.S. commitment to Afghanistan is not open-ended. Consequently, the options presented to Obama will be amended. Previously, it was believed he was leaning toward 30,000 additional troops.

Here’s what we reported earlier …

*Yesterday, for the first time, Former Secretary of State, General Colin Powell, went on the record to share the advice he gave President Obama regarding Afghanistan.

He spoke exclusively with Roland Martin on the Tom Joyner Morning Show.

Powell’s comments to “take your time” are in stark contrast to the reported suggestions that Cheney has given.

According to Powell:

This is a very difficult one for him. And it isn’t just a one-time decision. This is the decision that will have consequences for the better part of his administration. So Mr. President, don’t get pushed by the left to do nothing; don’t get pushed by the right to do everything. You take your time and you figure it out. You’re the commander-in-chief and this is what you were elected for.

Powell also said:

If you decide to send more troops or that’s what you feel it is necessary, make sure you have a good understanding of what those troops are going to be doing and some assurance that the additional troops will be successful. You can’t guarantee success in a very complex theater like Afghanistan and increasingly with the Pakistan problem next door. But you have to have some sense of what these additional troops will be able to do.

And secondly, take your time.

Third, you’ve got to ensure that you’re putting this commitment on a solid base, and the base is a little soft right now. We’ve got a president in Afghanistan that had a rough election; a lot of corruption associated with the election; a lot of corruption in the government. Mr. Karzai has been told, and I know him very well, he’s been told he’s got to do something about this; he’s got to do something about the drug problem, and he’s got to start pulling the Afghan people together.

Welcome to Solid Gold Soul

HALLE GETS A LEADERSHIP AWARD

Halle Berry

Halle Berry

Halle Berry will be honored at The Hollywood Reporter’s 18th annual Women in Entertainment breakfast presented by Lifetime.

The Oscar winner will receive the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award, which recognizes recipients for trailblazing within the industry and for generosity in giving back to the community at large. Previous beneficiaries include Barbara Walters, Meryl Streep, Jodie Foster and Glenn Close.

Hilary Swank and Eva Longoria Parker will also participate in the Dec. 4 breakfast at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The event is held annually in conjunction with the publication of THR’s “Power 100: Women in Entertainment” special issue, which highlights the top 100 women in the motion picture and television industries.

“The complex role that Halle Berry plays in life as a successful, versatile entertainment professional who is committed to furthering the well-being of others, especially minorities, is as inspiring as are her film roles,” THR editor Elizabeth Guider said. “The recognition is also wonderfully fitting in a year in which diversity has been embraced and rewarded at the highest levels of our government and culture.”

Berry, the first African-American woman to win the best actress Oscar, is the national spokesperson for the Jenesse Center, a nonprofit that provides support to heal families victimized by domestic violence.

Swank, a two-time Oscar-winning best actress, will deliver the keynote remarks at the breakfast. Multiple award-winner Longoria Parker will present at the event.

NO “AHA” IN COURT FOR OPRAH

Welcome to Solid Gold Soul

MUTUAL OF OMAHA AND OPRAH REACH AN AGREEMENT

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey

Insurance company Mutual of Omaha has decided to settle its lawsuit against Oprah Winfrey’s production company over rights to the phrase “aha moment,” reports the Associated Press.

Details of the agreement were not disclosed, however, Mutual spokesman Jim Nolan and spokeswoman Angela DePaul of Winfrey’s Harpo Productions Inc. said Monday that the case was resolved amicably.

The legal dispute started earlier this year after Mutual began using the slogan “official sponsor of the aha moment” in a national advertising campaign. The company sent a crew to 25-cities where they collected video stories of people describing a turning point in their lives. Visitors to Mutual’s Web site helped the insurance company pick ten of the “aha” stories to appear in television commercials.

Winfrey’s representatives argued in April that the phrase was synonymous with the TV host and her show. Winfrey often discusses “aha moments” — described on her magazine’s Web site as “those flashes of understanding” — with guests on her show.

Harpo asked Mutual in a letter to stop using “aha moment” to promote its insurance and financial products because it didn’t want confusion about whether there was a relationship between Mutual and Winfrey.

Mutual responded with the lawsuit and documents showing it had obtained preliminary approval of a federal trademark. The insurance company said it conceived its slogan in February 2008 and unveiled the Web site http://www.ahamoment.com a year later. It began researching trademark rights to “aha moment” in July 2008 and filed an application with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office that August. Mutual said no opposition was made to its trademark application, and preliminary approval was granted in April.

Mutual originally asked the court for a legal declaration allowing it to use the slogan and pronouncing that Mutual has not infringed on Harpo’s or Winfrey’s rights, but Harpo never filed a formal response to Mutual’s lawsuit.

In other Oprah news, the Connecticut woman who was mauled and blinded after a 200-pound chimpanzee attacked her in February is set to appear on today’s episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”

Charla Nash’s hands, nose, lips and eyelids were ripped off by the animal as she tried to lure it back into a cage at her friend’s house. Harpo said Nash will discuss how she’s adjusting, how she maintains her spirit, and what the future holds.

On Friday’s show, “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer will appear for what she says will be her only interview tied to the film release of “New Moon.” Meyer wrote on her blog, “I am so pleased and amazed and thrilled with what Chris Weitz has done with New Moon that I want to talk about it, and to show my support for him. And since I’m only doing one interview, better make it big. Really big.”

She also writes that the questions she’s planning on fielding on the show are “designed for a broader audience than just die-hard ‘Twilight’ fans.”

In one more Oprah bit, it was revealed that the wife of Hezbollah’s Ammar Mousawi is a fan of “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” At the end of a lengthy interview about politics, Israel and other topics, Huffington Post writer Sharmine Narwani asked Hezbollah’s foreign relations chief if there were any American television shows that he admires?

“My wife likes the Oprah show, and I watch it with her sometimes,” he said. “Oprah seems to cover some interesting topics of social value.”

KAREEM HAS CANCER

www.freddiebell.wordpress.com

November 11, 2009

Welcome to Solid Gold Soul

KAREEM’S FUTURE LOOKS GOOD

Kareem_Abdul-Jabbar

Kareen Abdul Jabbar

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has revealed that he is undergoing treatment for chronic myeloid leukemia, a rare form of the disease that was diagnosed last December.

The former Los Angeles Lakers center said his doctor didn’t give any guarantees, but informed him: “You have a very good chance to live your life out and not have to make any drastic changes to your lifestyle.”

Inspired by the way Lakers teammate Magic Johnson’s HIV disclosure brought awareness to the disease in 1991, Abdul-Jabbar said he wants to do the same for his form of blood cancer, which can be fatal if left untreated.

“I’ve never been a person to share my private life. But I can help save lives,” he said at a midtown Manhattan conference room. “It’s incumbent on someone like me to talk about this.”

Abdul-Jabbar, 62, said he became concerned last year after feeling odd sensations. He went for tests at his alma mater UCLA. “I was getting hot flashes and sweats on a regular basis,” he said. “That’s not normal, even for my age.”

An exam showed his white blood cell count was “sky high” and a doctor quickly diagnosed his condition. At first, all Abdul-Jabbar heard was the word “leukemia.”

“I was scared,” he said. “I thought it was all the same. I thought it could mean I have a month to live.”

“That was my first question,” he said. “Was I going to make it?”

Abdul-Jabbar drew upon his years of martial arts study to approach the diagnosis like a samurai, to face death without fear.

“I had my face on,” he said.

Abdul-Jabbar is a special assistant with the Lakers and said he hasn’t had to cut back his level of activity of coaching, change his regimen or adjust his diet. “I’m able to sneak out for Thai food,” he said.

“There is hope. This condition can be treated. You can still live a productive, full life,” he said. “I’m living proof I can make it.”

The retired athlete says he being counseled by his 28-year-old middle son, Amir, a third-year medical student in San Francisco.

“He was a real great source for me, just that I can talk to him about it. Being a doctor, he understood what was happening, and gave me realistic viewpoint on it,” Abdul-Jabbar said in an interview with People.com. “That means a lot to me.”

IS TONI BRAXTON ON THE OUTS WITH HUSBAND?

www.freddiebell.wordpress.com

Welcome to Solid Gold Soul

DID AN ON-STAGE KISS DO THEM IN?

Toni Braxton

Toni Braxton

Did the infamous kiss between Toni Braxton and Atlantan Trey Songz break up her marriage?

We all know how celebrity rumor mills churn, especially when they’re trying to tear people down. But after reviewing said kiss a few times … well, we don’t like to judge. We’ll just let you decide for yourself.

Just to catch you up, the singers performed the song “Yesterday” during the opening of the 2009 Soul Train Awards, which were taped Nov. 3 in Atlanta (the show will air on BET at 9 p.m. on Nov. 29). With Braxton’s husband, Keri Lewis formerly of the band Mint Condition, sitting in the audience, the two singers topped the performance off with what looks like a pretty intimate kiss.

Since then, radio DJS, TV hosts and blogs including Essence.com, have speculated that Braxton, in her 40s, and hubby are now separated. Many wonder if it’s linked to the intimate tongue wrestling seen on stage with the 25-year-old.

Hmmm…

SYKES RATINGS GOOD NOT GREAT

SYKES SHOW SCORES RESPECTABLE NUMBERS

wanda_sykes(008-headshot-med)

Wanda Sykes

Fox’s “The Wanda Sykes Show” debuted opposite “Saturday Night Live’s” highest rated broadcast of the season, yet still managed to hold its own in the timeslot.

Sykes is replacing “MadTV” in the slot as Fox’s alternative to NBC’s veteran sketch show, which hit a season high 5.0 rating with Taylor Swift as host and musical guest.

By comparison, “Wanda Sykes” averaged 2.2 household rating in Nielsen’s metered-markets from 11 p.m. to midnight, up 16% from “MadTV” winter average in the time period and 100% higher than the average of Spike Feresten in the slot during January and February, according to the Hollywood Reporter. (Note that these are averages and not premieres.)

Sykes also favorably compares to the first Monday episodes of the broadcast season for Conan, Kimmel and Fallon, yet these weren’t premieres either since the shows had already been in originals when the season started.

ROBIN ROBERTS PRINCIPLE ABC MORNING VOICE

www.freddiebell.wordpress.com

Solid Gold Soul

November 10, 2009

Welcome to Solid Gold Soul

ROBIN ROBERTS’ ANCHOR GETS HEAVIER AT ABC

Robin Roberts

Robin Roberts

“Good Morning America” co-anchor Robin Roberts is moonlighting in prime time this month as the host of two specials: an interview with Janet Jackson airing on Nov. 18, and tonight’s hour-long feature on country music stars.

According to the Associated Press, the specials “could be read as both internal and external signs of Roberts’ importance to the news division” in the absence of “GMA” co-anchor Diane Sawyer, who will replace Charlie Gibson at “World News” at the end of the year.

Roberts will remain at “GMA,” with a new permanent co-host to be announced by ABC News President David Westin in December.

In the meantime, Roberts has spent much of the past week preparing for her Jackson interview, which will be filmed at the singer’s home in Malibu, Calif. The journalist has a difficult balancing act. Jackson is still mourning the death of her brother Michael, a story that continues to fascinate the public. But she’s also a major star in her own right, with something to sell: Jackson has a greatest hits CD coming out in time for the holidays.

Roberts said she hasn’t determined in advance how much of the interview would be related to Michael Jackson.

“I don’t go in with a stack of questions and say three-quarters are going to be about this and one-quarter will be about that,” she said. “I like to have a conversation. I like to walk away and have the person say, `I thought we were going to do an interview and we just talked.’”

JANET AND DUPRI BACK TOGETHER

Not only are Janet Jackson and Jermaine Dupri reportedly back together, but they were never really apart, according to People magazine.

The couple appeared to be a done deal around the time of Michael Jackson’s death, a rumor that gained traction when Dupri did not attend the funeral services. Jackson herself told Harper’s Bazaar that she was single.

But People.com quotes an unnamed source who says, “They never really broke up. Jermaine wanted to give her some space when Michael died.”

There are even reports on the blogosphere that the two are planning a wedding.

“They’ve been saying that for years and you don’t see a ring on my finger,” Dupri told People on Friday at a Prive Las Vegas party to launch his Nu Pop Movement watch line. “I guess it just sounds good to have that rumor this time of the year or something.”

IS THE SHAQ DIVORCE RUMOR REAL?

www.freddiebell.wordpress.com

Solid Gold Soul

November 10, 2009

Welcome to Solid Gold Soul

IS THE DIVORCE REALLY MOVING FORWARD

Shaq and Wife

The is-they-is or is-they-ain’t Shaq & Shaunie show is in full effect again. So for now it looks like Mr. and Mrs Shaquille O’Neal is calling it quits again.

That’s right. They’ve been down this path before back in Sept of 2007. At the time, the Miami Herald broke the story that the then (Miami) Heat center had filed to divorce Shaunie, his wife of nearly five years. Interestingly, they also quoted from the petition that: “The marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken.”

However, the couple voided the divorce and resumed their marriage.

Fast forward to today, and according to TMZ:

“Shaunie filed legal papers yesterday in L.A., even though the couple lives in Florida. The petition says although Shaunie is filing for legal separation, she intends to file for divorce. She lists ‘irreconciliable differences’ as the reason for separation.”

The gossip site says Shaunie pulled her kids out of school in Florida several days ago and they are with her now in L.A. They say the date of separation is listed as 11-9-09.

They also answered the question you’re probably asking. Why would Shaunie cross the county to file in LA?

Their answer: A spouse generally does a lot better in the spousal support department here in California.

The site says her lawyer told them:

“Shaunie is living in California now, but she won’t say how long she’s been here. She claims in her papers to be a resident of L.A. Sources tell us Shaunie moved here in the last few days.”

Mrs. O’Neal is asking for both spousal and child support — though she did not specify an amount for either.

The O’Neals have four children together: Shareef, 9, Amirah, 7, Shaqir, 6, and Me’Arah, 3. From previous relationships, Shaq has a daughter, Taahirah, and Shaunie has a son, Myles.
