LUDACRIS GETS A NEW LOOK

Ludacris is following in the steps of Busta Rhymes, who cut off his trademark dreadlocks after more than a decade earlier this year. Allhiphop.com reports that Ludacris will be sporting a short haircut in the video for his new single, “Money Maker.”

The rapper is scheduled to shoot the video today, July 31st, in Miami with Pharrell Williams. The song is the lead single from Ludacris’ new album, Release Therapy, which hits stores this fall.

The rapper said in a released statement, “Release Therapy marks a new phase in my life. I’m very excited to move forward and try new things. Life is all about change and this album will hopefully reflect some of my growth as an artist and a person. With that said, it only makes sense that I ‘shake things up’ and try something different. Who knows what I’ll come up with next?”

THE CLIPSE SET HALLOWEEN RELEASE DATE FOR NEW ALBUM

The Clipse will release their new album, Hell Hath No Fury, on Halloween (October 31st). The group’s Malice told MTV.com, “It’s just fitting. Halloween — let the demons loose. It’s a fresh album. There’s no way we could use the same album; we’re in a totally different place. You can hear what we’ve been through. It’s good to let people in on it. It’s been sitting up, and it’s good to let the cat out of the bag. The feedback has been good. It’s a classic. … It’s going to be reminiscent of classic East Coast hip- hop.”

The group’s other half, Pusha, added, “Sitting here with everybody else, I’m seeing it as everybody else is seeing it, all the writers and everybody’s eyes. Then just comparing it to everything else, it’s like we getting a musical album with different sounds, and it’s a good body of work.”

Since the group hasn’t released an album in four years, they’re pulling out all the stops for the new album. Pusha explained, “We’re doing Hell Hath No Fury the movie, and the soundtrack is all [our crew's] Re-Up Gang music. We’re trying to get the soundtrack together. We already have great music. It’s just a family soundtrack. You’re not going to hear any other artist outside the family.”

Pusha added, “I’m not sure when we’re gonna start shooting, but we’re about to write it up. It’s basically like [Jay-Z's film] Streets Is Watching. It’s gonna be a defining moment. It’s the album, seven videos off of it, narrated, and the story line is what we’ve been doing the past four years on hiatus. The videos fit around the story.”

Hell Hath No Fury features guest appearances by Pharrell Williams, Slim Thug, the Re-Up Gang and Roscoe P. Coldchain.

The latest single from the project is “Mr. Me Too.”

DILATED PEOPLES LEAVE CAPITOL RECORDS

Los Angeles-based rap trio Dilated Peoples has parted ways with Capitol Records after releasing four albums through the label. Group member Evidence told Ballerstatus.net, “There’s a lot of good people at Capitol. But, sometimes those aren’t the people that write the checks. However, I’m not bitter; I’m definitely ready to move forward…..Dilated Peoples is bigger than me. It’s bigger than Rakaa and Babu. That’s why it’s a beautiful platform to launch our solo projects.”

The group hasn’t decided who they will record for next but for the time being there’s a whole slew of projects to keep them busy. One such effort is a DVD titled, The Release Party, which will feature the behind-the-scenes look of the group making of their four albums, rare show footage, and exclusive songs. The DVD was directed by Jason Goldwach.

DJ Babu is also working on a new project titled, Duck Season Vol.3, while Rakaa has begun recording an untitled solo project.

Evidence’s solo project, The Weatherman, is slated to hit stores on March 20, 2007, on ABB Records. The project will feature guest appearances by Rakaa, Little Brother, Defari, and DJ Revolution. Dilated Peoples’ last release was this year’s 20/20.

The group’s previous offerings include: 2004’s Neighborhood Watch, 2001’s Expansion Team and their 1999 Capitol debut The Platform.

D.M.C. LAUNCHES CAMP FOR KIDS WITHOUT PARENTS

Last year Darryl “D.M.C.” McDaniels discovered that he was adopted and now the rap veteran is hoping to help adopted kids and those without parents through his Felix Organization. The non-profit is launching Camp Felix this year in the hopes of sending 150 children to summer camp for a life-changing experience.

D.M.C. told Allhiphop.com, “There are many children growing up without parents, in the foster care system or with parents who aren’t really equipped. These children do not have the opportunities we had, or parental hands to guide and support them as we did. We want to give them what so many of us are lucky enough to take for granted, new opportunities. New adventures.”

D.M.C. has partnered with The New York Foundling. The organization has given the rapper access to a 350-acre existing camp in Putnam Valley, New York for three weeks in August.

JIBBS EXPLAINS HIS EARLY START IN THE RAP GAME

St. Louis-based rapper Jibbs will release his self-titled debut album this fall on Geffen Records. The album will feature guest appearances by Chamillionaire, Chris Brown, the Pussycat Dolls, and D4L’s Fabo.

Jibbs is a teenager, which is young for a rapper, but he recently shared that he’s been perfecting his craft since he was eight. The rapper said: “I grew up watching my older brother do performances and make beats for a lot of local people around St. Louis. So I turned around, when I was seven-and-a-half, eight, I knew I wanted to do it.”

But the rapper shared that it was difficult to get his brother to listen to his raps at first. Jibbs said: “It was real hard to come about because my brother never really listened to me every time I told him I wanted to do it. You know he’s twice my age so he never really listened for real.”

The first single from the project is “Chain Hang Low.”

ASHANTI TO CREATE LIFE & STYLE GUIDE FOR DISNEY BOOK DIVISION

Multi-platinum recording artist Ashanti will pen a unique life and fashion guide, aimed at young people, that will be published in 2007. The singer’s book, titled Ashanti Style, will be published by Jump at the Sun, an imprint of Disney Book Group’s Hyperion Books for Children, which creates books celebrating diversity.

Ashanti Style is described as an autobiographical account of the singer’s life and style that will also include fashion and beauty tips and a photo insert.

Ashanti can currently be seen in theaters in the teen comedy John Tucker Must Die, which opened Friday, July 28th. She’ll also appear in Resident Evil 3: Extinction, due in the fall of 2007.

ANGIE STONE A CONTESTANT ON NEW SEASON OF ‘CELEBRITY FIT CLUB’

R&B singer Angie Stone will be one of the contestants on Season 4 of VH1’s weight-loss reality show Celebrity Fit Club. According to this week’s People magazine, the 44-year-old “U-Haul” singer suffered from sarcoidosis and gained weight from her medication. “I’m the biggest girl on the show, and the most likely to be in last place,” she admits.

Stone will attempt to lose 30 pounds during the run of the show, which also features singer Carnie Wilson, child star Tina Yothers, the Sopranos’ Vincent Pastore, The Love Boat’s Ted Lange, rapper Bone Crusher, NYPD Blue’s Nick Tuturro, and Playboy Playmate Erika Eleniak. The new season of Celebrity Fit Club debuts on Sunday, August 6th. Check local listings for times.

Stone’s most recent release was the 2005 career retrospective Stone Hits: The Very Best Of Angie Stone. Previous albums include 2004’s Stone Love, 2001’s Mahogany Soul, and 1999’s Black Diamonds.

Stone’s career has included performing in the hip-hop group Sequence and the R&B group Vertical Hold before debuting as a solo artist and songwriter. She says her experiences have given her even more credibility as an artist, as she told me: “Well, you gotta go back as far as 1979 with Sequence when I did the first hip-hop album, and then Vertical Hold and then Angie Stone. It’s like I’m evolving into an artist that has walked that walk. And I’m at this place right now where it matters or it’s important enough that I can have — because some people never get a ‘very best-of.'”

SUNSHINE ANDERSON READYING SOPHOMORE RELEASE

R&B singer Sunshine Anderson is preparing her sophomore release, Sunshine At Midnight, for a January release on her own label, Shining Star Incorporated, with distribution through Music World Music. Helping out with production are Dr. Dre and Raphael Saadiq, among others. The Charlotte, North Carolina-born singer will release the single “Something I Wanna Give You” next month, according to Billboard.

Anderson first signed with Music World, helmed by Destiny’s Child mastermind Mathew Knowles, back in 2004, three years after she released her Soulife/Atlantic debut Your Woman. That album featured the R&B single “Heard It All Before,” which peaked at Number Three on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

Her debut also featured a guest appearances by Anthony Hamilton and Kayla Parker, but Anderson — who was once managed by Macy Gray –goes it alone on her next set. “It’s been a long time so we just want everyone to focus on Sunshine again,” said the singer. “My vocals are raw and honest and pure, with a lot of emotion. So vocally not much has changed, but I’ve grown as a businesswoman. I’m more involved in this project and I was a little more inspired this time.”

FAT JOE HEADS TO EUROPE, PREPS NEW ALBUM

Bronx-based rapper Fat Joe is heading out on his first European tour this week. The veteran rapper had to overcome his fear of flying, and now he and opening act, Ron Artest, will perform 11 shows in seven countries over the next three weeks. The tour will officially get underway in Lisbon, Portugal, this Friday, July 28th, and it’s scheduled to wrap in Norway on August 8th.

The rapper told SOHH.com, “This tour has been something I’ve wanted to do for years. I’m so glad I’ve found peace with flying and am able to finally hit the overseas market. This will definitely be the first of many European trips for me. I’m excited to finally see all my fans overseas that have supported my hip- hop career over the past 14 years.”

In related news, Fat Joe will release an independent album, Me, Myself & I, this fall. So far the album will feature guest appearances by The Game and Lil Wayne.

Fat Joe explained, “This album is really my most up close and personal you’ve ever heard. I’m showing all sides and letting fans really get to know who I truly am. Lyrically I’m showing my vulnerable and gangster sides. One of the most personal songs on the album is ‘Maria’ which I dedicated to my mother. I was able to open up and talk about very personal events in my life that I haven’t been able to put into my rhymes before.”

The first single from the new album is “Clap & Revolve.”

Fans may be wondering why Fat Joe would return with a new album so soon after dropping, All Or Nothing, just last year. The rapper shared his out of sight, out of mind theory with me. He said: “Well, you know, the game is real competitive–out of sight, out of mind. The perfect example is a Jill Scott. I bought, like, 10 of her albums, right, and I’m a big fan. And the other day, I’m watching BET and she comes on the commercial, just going, like, ‘Black star power.’ I’m like what the…”

The rapper continued: “My first reaction: ‘Where the hell is Jill Scott at, man? She fell off? What’s going on?’ So that’s just the theory of coming back, you know what I mean, that fast — you don’t want to be out of sight, out of mind.”

THE GAME LEAKS STREET SINGLE

Compton-based rapper The Game has been hard at work on his sophomore album, The Doctor’s Advocate, which is scheduled to hit stores on November 7th. MTV.com reports that the rapper recently leaked a street single, “It’s Okay (One Blood),” from the project which features a sample from Junior Reid’s reggae classic, “One Blood.”

The Game has been very tight-lipped about the project but producer Dre of Cool & Dre shared that he’s already produced three songs for the new album. Dre said, “We gave him some really hot records. We gave him this record with Mary J. Blige. [It's] another soulful record. Mary flipped it. We was in the studio — it was Mary, me and Cool, Game. The record is so beautiful. I believe the Mary song is called ‘People.’ Then we did a record with him that’s so phenomenal that’s up for first single status. This record is called ‘Stop.'”

The producer added, “‘Stop’ is something you never heard before. Me and Cool got this really new style. The beat is hard, but melodically, it’s new. It’s on some ‘Twilight Zone’ s**t. It [goes,] ‘Stop/ When the lights go out and the music go off.’ It’s crazy. The Game is spitting crazy on it. We actually did three records for his album. We did another one that Nas is on.”

Cool & Dre produced The Game’s Grammy-nominated hit, “Hate It Or Love It” featuring 50 Cent.

TRICK DADDY GIVES BACK TO MIAMI HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Miami-based rapper Trick Daddy will release his new album, Book Of Thugs, Part II, later this year but in the mean time he’s doing his part to help high school students in Miami. Allhiphop.com reports that the rapper and his foundation, Trick Luvs Da Kids Foundation, has partnered with the Florida Marlins, and 103.5 FM for the 3rd Annual Trick Luvs Da Kids Back to School Family Fun Fest.

The event will be held at Virrick Park in Miami on July 29th and will feature free food and music as well as a backpack filled with school supplies to help them through the upcoming school year.

Trick Daddy explained, “We want to encourage students to do their best in school. South Florida schools are among the lowest schools in the state with low FCAT [Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test scores.] We want students to be excited about learning.”

The rapper added, “I enjoy giving back to the children. These kids will one day be our leaders.”

METHOD MAN’S FEUD WITH WENDY WILLIAMS INTENSIFIES

The Wu-Tang Clan’s Method Man is still fuming that radio personality Wendy Williams leaked the fact that his wife was battling cancer on air. The rapper and his wife, had been keeping the ailment a secret from the rest of their family. Method Man told Allhiphop.com, “Wendy gets on the air and said [Method Man] ‘his wife is sick and she not doing too well,’ and I’m like this f***king b***h man. This [is] the big “C,” big “C” [for cancer]. I was ready. I was so mad, I was crying right there and I’m like I’m gonna kill some f**king body and these [Wu Tang friends] kept me in there, kept me in L.A.”

But Method Man was further angered when Williams suggested that he was sleeping with his wife’s doctor. The rapper explained, “She said me and [the doctor] was f**king. What kind of s**t is that, man? You don’t do that to nobody. You say the f**k you want to say about me, say nothing about my family, man.”

In related news, Method Man will release his new album, 4:21…The Day After, on August 29th

T.I.’S PROTEGE YOUNG DRO TO RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM

Atlanta-based rapper Young Dro was childhood friends with Kris Kross’ Daddy Mack and T.I. He was able to use those relationships to secure a deal with T.I.’s Grand Hustle label in 2004 and now the rapper is set to release his debut album, Best Thang Smokin, on August 29th.

The album will feature guest appearances by Slim Thug, T.I., and Xtaci with production by Jazze Pha, Chad West, Keith Mack, Khao, and Lil C.

The lead single from the project, “Shoulder Lean,” is a bonafide hit and the rapper has also been able to cash in on the mobile side. Over 500,000 “Shoulder Lean” ringtones have been sold so far making it the Warner Music Group’s best selling ringtone.

BEYONCE VIDEO RE-SHOOT PETITION GAINS MORE SIGNATURES

Beyonce’s fans are mad and they’re not gonna take it anymore. At least, not as far as the video for her new single “Deja Vu” is concerned. More than 3,000 people have now signed an on-line petition addressed to her label, Columbia Records, complaining that the new clip just isn’t up to par and demanding a re- shoot.

The video was premiered on June 12th. Within days, the petition appeared, with disgruntled fans complaining about everything from Beyonce’s hair and wardrobe, her choreography, her interaction with longtime boyfriend and track guest star Jay-Z, and the clip’s apparent lack of any clear storyline.

The petition claims that the “dancing is erratic, confusing and alarming at times,” that the scenes between Beyonce and Jay-Z “are alarming and show unacceptable interactions between the two,” that her outfits, “while haute-couture, (are) unbelievable and ridiculous,” and that the video’s editing “causes one to get dizzy and disoriented.”

“This video is an underwhelming representation of the talent and quality of previous music-video projects of Ms. Knowles,'” the petition concluded.

“Deja Vu” is the first single from Beyonce’s sophomore solo set, B’Day, due September 4th. There’s been no word from Columbia in response to the video petition.

PRINCE SET TO BE SINGLE AGAIN

International superstar Prince is parting ways with his Princess. Manuela Testolini Nelson, the artist’s 29- year-old wife of five years, filed for divorce on May 24th, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Prince and the Canadian beauty hooked up after she began working at Paisley Park, his sprawling production and rehearsal complex in Chanhassen, Minnesota. The two were married in a super-secret Jehovah’s Witness ceremony in Hawaii back in 2001.

While Prince, who is 48, toured the world in support of his hit album Musicology and recorded the follow- up, 3121, Mrs. Prince Rogers Nelson ran her own company, Camilla Inc., which operates a range of businesses from a production company to a line of designer candles.

This was the second marriage for the star who has alternately been known as the Prince Of Royal Badness, the Artist Formerly Known As Prince, and the Symbol since he emerged in 1978. He was married to Spanish back-up dancer Mayte Garcia for two years before the union was annulled in 1998. In the meantime, a British company has filed suit against the artist claiming copyright infringement. HM Publishing Holdings filed July 3rd, alleging that the name of the NPG Music Club is a little too close to its own Nature Publishing Group, or NPG, trademark. Prince attorney David Schelzel has said that his client’s right to use the name is not in jeopardy and that the decision to shut down NPGMusicClub.com had nothing to do with the lawsuit, according to E! Online.com.

CIARA STILL KEEPING PERSONNEL FOR SOPHOMORE SET A SECRET

Songbird Ciara is being cagey about what other guests and producers will be on her follow-up to Goodies. “Well, I will say that there are underdogs on there that are really cool to me,” she told MTV.com. “Fresh producers. We also have some very established ones. The energy is crazy. My goal as an artist and a musician, a writer, is to give you my best that I can give you. Your sophomore album, you start kinda going, ‘OK, can I do it bigger and better than last time? Can I really just give them what they want?’ ”

The singer recently completed shooting the sexy video for her club-ready single “Get Up” featuring Chamillionaire. The tune has reached Number 25 on the national urban airplay chart. Ciara will be one of the headliners Friday (July 28th) for VH1’s Save The Music Hamptons benefit in East Hampton. The event, which will also feature Lyfe Jennings, is expected to raise more than $30,000 for the music education organization.

CHINGY SHOWS OFF 2 SIDES TO PERSONALITY WITH UPCOMING ‘HOODSTAR’

Rapper Chingy is looking forward to the release of his sophomore set Hoodstar, which is now due September 19th from Capitol Records. The follow-up to his platinum debut, Powerballin’, the new album has been previewed by the single “Pullin’ Me Back,” featuring Tyrese, produced by Jermaine Dupri.

Also contributing their skills to the new set are producers Mr. Collipark, Timbaland, Kwame, the Trak Starz and Poli Paul. Guests include Three 6 Mafia, Spiffy, and Fat Man Scoop.

The album will be divided into a “hood’ side with heavy crunk beats, and a “star” side, reflecting a more party vibe.

Recently Chingy explained that the new set, which had an earlier release date, truly reflects who he is: “My new album Hoodstar, which is dropping September 12th, I mean it’s gonna be a nice album. I got production by Collipark on there, J.D., Triple 6 Mafia, Timbaland, Kwame. It’s gonna be a beautiful album, man. And the reason I call it Hoodstar is because I come from the hood, and going through my trials and tribulations having success and everything, I just feel like I’m a hood star. ”

DMX REJECTS PLEA DEAL

Rapper DMX rejected a plea deal this week in his traffic case stemming from a June 2nd traffic stop. SOHH.com reports that the rapper’s lawyer, Murray Richman, shared that he rejected the first plea offer and that the rapper is due back in court on August 21st.

DMX was pulled over in White Plains, New York for driving erratically and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. He was also ticketed for driving without a seatbelt and an unsafe lane change.

An arrest warrant was issued for the rapper last month after he missed his last court date. He was arrested and later released on $25,000 bail.

If the rapper is found guilty of all the traffic infractions, he could receive up to 180 days behind bars.

In related news, DMX will release his new album, Year Of The Dog Again, on August 1st.

XZIBIT TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM IN SEPTEMBER

Last year Xzibit got out of his recording contract with Sony Music and now the rapper has inked a deal with Koch Records for his new album, Full Circle, which hits stores on September 19th.

The Pimp My Ride host told Allhiphop.com, “After 10 years of being signed to a major label, I have learned a lot. Koch Records is giving me the opportunity to put this knowledge to work. I am excited to be putting an independent record out through Open Bar Entertainment/Koch Records and am looking forward to doing what I love to do best.”

The first single and video from the new project is “Concentrate.”

When I spoke to Xzibit, he shared how his music is the catalyst for everything that he does. The rapper said: “Having success as a musician, I mean that’s the bread and butter. That’s the catalyst of everything because it’s a direct tap into people’s psyche and direct tap into what people are listening to. It has a large effect because people move to the rhythm and people listen to the music constantly.”

In related news, Xzibit has landed a role in the new movie, Gridiron Gang. The film will also star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Xzibit’s previous screen credits include 8 Mile, Derailed, and The Wash.

Xzibit released his debut album, At The Speed Of Life, in 1996. It was followed by 1998’s 40 Dayz & 40 Nightz. The rapper’s 2000 set, Restless, was certified platinum for sales of one million copies. Following a shift over to Sony Music, Xzibit released his 2002 album, Man Vs. Machine, which was certified gold for sales of 500,000 copies, as was his last album, 2004’s Weapons Of Mass Destruction.

BLACK ICE TO RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM IN SEPTEMBER

Spoken word artist Black Ice will release his debut album, The Death of Willie Lynch, on September 5th on Koch Records. The Def Poetry Jam alum was initially signed to Def Jam Records in 2002 but his project was shelved indefinitely.

The new album, which was produced by Eric Greene Jr., features guest appearances by Natalie Stewart of Floetry, Musiq Soulchild, Vee, and Chyna Black.

Black Ice has been tapped to open for Mary J. Blige on her Breakthrough tour along with LeToya Luckett and Jaheim.

JUELZ SANTANA TO HOST ANNUAL BBQ

The Diplomats’ Juelz Santana will host his Fourth Annual Santana’s Day BBQ this Saturday, July 29th, in Harlem, New York. Allhiphop.com reports that the event, which will take place at the Battlegrounds Playground on Amsterdam Avenue, will be hosted by NBA star Vince Carter and will feature DJ Funkmaster Flex on the wheels of steel.

Santana said, “Every year, my family and I host a BBQ for our community. It’s my way of giving back and letting the youth know that dreams do come true with hard work and determination.”

Students who have a B minus average or better will be eligible for prizes and gifts at the BBQ which starts at noon.

In related news, Santana, whose real name is LaRon James, explained how he got his MC name. He said: [“It was originally Juelz and, you know, I had a rhyme one time — ‘Juelz Santana when I spit in the camera.’ Something like that. It was about five years ago. I said that on the radio and everybody just went crazy. And Cam’ was just like ‘Yeah, yeah, my man Juelz Santana, my man Juelz Santana.’ And everybody just took it that I was Juelz Santana, and I just kinda stuck with that.”

NELLY SAYS HE ENJOYED WORKING WITH JANET JACKSON

Rapper Nelly is currently featured on “Call On Me,” the lead single from Janet Jackson’s new album, 20 Years Old, which hits stores in September. The rapper, who has also recorded with Mariah Carey in the past, shared how excited his family was about him collaborating with Jackson. He told MTV.com, “My family flipped out. They’re definitely fans of the Jacksons. I grew up singing Jackson Five songs. My uncle put a little band together with all the kids, and I used to have to be Mike. This was a long time ago.”

Nelly added that what was special about the recording is that they actually wrote the song together. He explained, “With Janet, we went in, wrote the song out. It’s not like they had the song done and said, ‘Nelly, put your thing on it.’ I’m happy it went that way because I feel more of a part of it.

You can’t take me off and still have a song.” Nelly won’t release a new solo album until next year but he has several releases lined up for his Derrty Entertainment label including albums by Kinfolk, Murphy Lee, and Avery Storm.

LIL WAYNE REFUSES TO ADDRESS GILLIE DA KID’S ALLEGATIONS

Philadelphia-based rapper and former member of Major Figgas, Gillie Da Kid, recently went public with allegations that he was a ghostwriter for Lil Wayne while signed to Cash Money Records from 2001 to early 2004. During a recent interview with MTV.com, Lil Wayne wouldn’t even address the allegations and when asked about Gillie Da Kid directly responded, “What Kid? What Kid? What Kid?”

The rapper is talking about his upcoming projects which include a joint album with Juelz Santana tentatively titled, I Can’t Feel My Face, and duet project with Birdman. Lil Wayne explained, “We have a roster, it’s just that we have to show the world that roster. Right now, what I think about the future of Cash Money? As long as I’m there, we good. Me and the Birdman, he’s dropping his last album, it’s going to be called Like Father, Like Son. Crazy album. I think we’re going to do a little movie with it, like Murder Was the Case, like Snoop did. Then after that I got my own label, Young Money. I got my first artist coming, Currency the Hot Spitter.”

Lil Wayne is also working on Tha Carter III. He said, “My whole focus for this next album is for Lil Wayne as a person to get better. I’m getting older, have a lot more to talk about. I ain’t just waking up and doing the usual. Creativity is everything. [When I was younger,] creativity, that wasn’t it for me. I had something to go for me, and it was either ‘Bling Bling’ or ‘Back That Thang Up.’ Now everybody is feeling me because of my talent. Now I have to get more creative.”

The latest single and video from Tha Carter II is “Shooter” featuring Robin Thicke.

MISSY ELLIOTT FOCUSING ON BIOPIC, NOT ANOTHER REALITY SHOW

Hip-hop producer and performer Missy Elliott says that she is focusing all her energy on getting the filmed version of her life off the ground. The project will be co-produced by Robert DeNiro, among others, and will begin shooting later this year. But Elliott, who has mostly appeared as herself on screen, says she has not determined whether she’ll have an on-screen role in the film.

One possible snag in the production is that her longtime production partner and friend, Timbaland, has reportedly refused to be involved in the film. “I don’t want to be in the movie. For me that movie is all about her,” the rapper born Tim Moseley was quoted as saying by ContactMusic.com. “You couldn’t make that movie and put my side of the story in it too.”

Elliott also recently said she probably won’t revisit the reality television game any time soon. The Grammy-winning artist produced and appeared in the 2005 UPN show The Road to Stardom With Missy Elliott. The show had 13 aspiring rappers go on the road with Elliott while competing for a recording contract and prizes.

Elliott said that the process of auditioning and judging the contestants was too emotionally grueling. She said, “The reality show is hard, man, I be crying and stuff. My blood pressure can’t take the reality show. It be too real, I don’t know if I’m gonna be doing that again. I mean, who knows. Right now, I don’t think so, but you never know. I don’t want to say never.”

The Virginia native’s most recent album was 2005’s Cookbook.

KELLY ROWLAND RUMORED TO BE PREGNANT

Rumors are swirling around singer Kelly Rowland, speculating that the former Destiny’s Child singer is two months pregnant. Rowland said nothing about having a bun in the oven during her guest-host stint in Star Jones Reynolds’ vacated chair on The View last week. However, she did say that she was dating again after her devastating broken engagement last year from Dallas Cowboys star Roy Williams. Rowland told The View audience that the breakup was a “mutual decision” because they “both” realized things were moving too fast.

The U.K.’s Daily Mirror is reporting that the D Child is indeed expecting her first child, which throws a monkey wrench into plans for her new solo album. “It’s kind of a bittersweet feeling because I was planning to release an album next year,” Rowland reportedly told the tabloid. No information on the father was given in the article.

JIM JONES SAYS THE DIPSET IS STILL IN FULL EFFECT

Harlem-based crew the Diplomats, which is made up of Cam’ron, Jim Jones, Juelz Santana, JR Writer, Hell Rell, 40 Cal, Jha Jha, and others, had been rumored to be on a brink of a break up but Jim Jones recently addressed the rumors. Jones told

MTV.com, “Nothing’s always sweet. Everybody goes through their trials and tribulations and turbulence. But we brothers. Anybody that’s got brothers and sisters, you have the worst fights ever in your life with your brothers and sisters. Not to say we feuding, but it comes with the territory. We’re family for real. Nothing stops that. If it all went down and we all had to live in one house, it would probably be 30 n***as living in one house. When we started, it was 30 n***as living in one house.”

The rumors were partially fueled by Jones launching his own Byrd Gang label through the Warner Music Group. Jones explained the difference between Byrd Gang and Diplomat Records. He said, “It ain’t no difference. It’s just a clever way of getting money. You just gotta flip it.”

Jones in currently working on a new album, Summer Was Fun, which will be released this fall. The rapper will release a double video, “We Fly High” and “Reppin’ Time,” in the coming weeks.

In related news, the Diplomats have had a longstanding beef with rapper Tru Life and, according to Jones, he recently challenged the rapper to a boxing match for $50,000. He said, “I seen old boy in the streets. I did challenge to fight him for 50 thou. I’d do it for free but n***as is talking like gangstas. Gangstas have money. They do what they want to do. I felt like I wanted to fight for 50 thou. That was damn near a month ago and he ain’t bite.”

JAY-Z CONTINUES TO SECRETLY WORK ON ALBUM

Reports have surfaced that Jay-Z has been secretly working on a new album with Kanye West, the Neptunes, Timbaland, and Cool & Dre. SOHH.com reports that the top secret project may be in stores as early as Thanksgiving and that Jay-Z has been secretly working with Dr. Dre.

A source told New York’s Daily News, “Dre will E-mail Jay some new beats. Jay will E-mail him the lyrics, then Dre will E-mail him the mix.”
Jay-Z’s last official release was 2003’s The Black Album. The rapper is currently featured on Beyonce’s new hit single, “Deja Vu.”

BONE CRUSHER GOES INDIE, TALKS ‘CELEBRITY FIT CLUB’

Atlanta-based rapper Bone Crusher released a new independent album, Release The Beast, earlier this month and the rapper explained that he hasn’t released an album in three years because he was stuck in a legal dispute with Jive Records. The rapper said, “Jive really didn’t know me very well. Same problem with the Clipse. We all got caught in a f***ed-up situation. We all been trying to get off; me, J-Kwon, the Clipse, the Youngbloodz.”

Bone Crusher added, “This album is a bunch of records I did right when ‘Never Scared’ came out and before I signed [with Arista]. You’re gonna hear a lot of hunger like ‘Never Scared.’ It’s that type of music.”

In related news, Bone Crusher is one of the cast members of Celebrity Fit Club 4. The rapper said, “Right now it’s going real well. I’m the number- one guy for weight loss at Celebrity Fit Club.’We’re doing our thing, I’m getting skinny.”

The rapper added that Fit Club alum Bizarre got him interested in the show. He explained, “He called me up, like ‘Bone, you should do the show. Show ‘em how big boys do it. Dr. Ian knew me, he was jockeying for me to get on there. Then VH1 called me and it was good. We’ll be taping till August.”

ABOVE THE LAW’S BIG HUTCH RELEASED FROM PRISON

Above The Law’s Big Hutch, aka Cold 187um, was released from an Arkansas Federal Correctional Institution on Friday, July 21st. SOHH.com reports that Hutch, whose real name is Gregory Hutchinson, served two years at the facility for conspiracy to traffic 100 pounds of marijuana. The rapper, who has adopted a new moniker, 1-Ate Seven, will be living in a halfway house for several weeks.

Another member of Above The Law, DJ-Koss, was arrested in 2001 for drug possession. He was released earlier this year from prison.

Above The Law’s first release, 1990’s Livin’ Like Hustlers, was released by Eazy E’s Ruthless Records. The group’s subsequent releases include: 1993’s Black Mafia Life, 1994’s Uncle Sam’s Curse, 1996’s Time Will Reveal, 1998’s Legends, and 1999’s Forever: Rich Thugs, Book One.

The group signed a deal with Suge Knight’s Death Row Records in 2001 but were unable to release a group project because of legal issues.

MARY J. BLIGE SAYS SHE’S IN GREATEST SHAPE OF HER LIFE

Grammy winner Mary J. Blige, currently on the national Breakthrough Experience tour, says that she’s in great shape, both physically and mentally. And that has a lot to do with making that personal “breakthrough” that’s become the title of her multi-platinum album.

Blige told me: “Physically, I’m like probably the best shape, you know, in my life that I’ve ever been in. As far as my health is concerned, I’m really, really healthy. And my mental — you know, I make sure that I’m not stressed out over a lot of things. But you know, that’s inevitable, but at the same time I’m making sure I keep count of what’s going on with me so I don’t have to look at anybody else.”

Blige is still getting strong airplay for her former Number One R&B single “Be Without You.” Her next tour stop is July 26th at the Post-Gazette Pavilion in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania.

R. KELLY TO RELEASE FIRST LIVE CONCERT DVD

R&B star R. Kelly has signed a deal with Image Entertainment to release his first-ever concert DVD in early 2007. The still-untitled screen project was filmed in March during Kelly’s Light It Up tour stop at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland, California. In addition to the concert footage, the DVD will include behind-the-scenes footage and a rare personal view of the artist.

“I appreciate my fans for supporting me and giving me the chance to live my dreams and share my songs with them throughout my whole career,” said Kelly in a statement. “This is my first concert DVD and I’m so proud to be able to bring the world a new classic!”

The DVD is being produced by Ann Carli and directed by Jim Swaffield, who worked on Kelly’s Trapped In The Closet DVD.

Meanwhile, Kelly’s trial on child pornography charges was delayed yet again. While Chicago’s Cook County Criminal Courthouse was reportedly getting spruced up in advance of receiving all the press and looky- loos generated by the trial, the judge in the case was hospitalized and treated for injuries from a fall off an 18-foot ladder. As of Friday, Judge Vincent Gaughan was in intensive care. Kelly is charged with having sex with an underage girl and videotaping it.

ALICIA KEYS HELPS OPEN CANADA’S INT’L AIDS CONFERENCE

Philanthropists and AIDS activists Bill and Melinda Gates will also make a presentation at the show. The concert at the Rogers Center will open the six- day AIDS conference, with proceeds from ticket sales going toward several AIDS-related group.

R&B singer Shareefa will release her debut album, Point Of No Return, this September on Ludacris’ Disturbing Tha Peace label in conjunction with Def Jam Records. The singer has been labeled the first lady of DTP, a title which rapper Shawnna has held for some time.

Shareefa explained: “I think that when they say that they mean first female R&B artist. But Shawnna is like my sister. Like me and Shawnna is tight so ain’t no really like misunderstanding in the newspaper or nothing like that gonna ever come in between me and Shawnna.”

The singer added: “So it doesn’t matter if they say she’s the first lady because she was technically the first girl, the first lady signed to Disturbing Tha Peace as a rapper. And I am the first female R&B.”

The first single from Point of No Return is “Need A Boss” featuring Ludacris. The set will also feature a guest appearance by Bobby Valentino and the production of Chucky Thompson, Rodney Jerkins, and Salaam Remi.

RODNEY JERKINS CELEBRATES ALL-STAR KATRINA SINGLE WITH L.A. PARTY

To celebrate the completion of his all-star charity CD, “We Are Family,” producer Rodney Jerkins is planning a star-studded bash at a Los Angeles hotspot on August 14th. The updated version of Sister Sledge’s classic ’70s anthem “We Are Family” will debut on August 29th, the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina’s devastation of the Gulf Coast. Tiger Has Emotional Victory

HOYLAKE, England — The emotions had been trapped in Tiger Woods since he stood at his father’s grave two months ago, set loose only after he tapped in his final putt Sunday to win the British Open.

It was his 11th major championship, but the first one they couldn’t share.
He plucked the ball out of the cup, turned slightly and started to grin when a mixture of sadness and satisfaction washed over his face and he screamed out, “Yes!”
Woods buried his head in the shoulder of caddie Steve Williams, sobbing uncontrollably, his chest heaving. Then he found his wife, Elin, and hugged her for the longest minute, tears still streaming down his face.
“I’m kind of the one who bottles things up a little bit and moves on,” he said. “But at that moment, it just came pouring out. And of all the things that my father has meant to me and the game of golf, I just wish he would have seen it one more time.”
It sure would have looked familiar.
Woods was ruthless as ever on the brown, baked links of Royal Liverpool, relying more on brains than brawn.
He hit driver only one time the entire week — the 16th hole of the first round — and relied on iron play that was so impeccable his caddie kept a sheet of paper of all the shots Woods missed.
There were only three of them.
“I don’t think anyone has ever hit long irons that well,” Williams said.
It carried Woods to a 5-under 67 and a two-shot victory over Chris DiMarco, making him the first player since Tom Watson in 1982-83 to win golf’s oldest championship in consecutive years.
It was his first victory since his father, Earl, died May 3 after a brutal bout with cancer. Some questioned whether Woods could regain his focus after taking nine weeks off, especially after he returned to the U.S. Open and missed the cut for the first time in a major.
Turns out, Woods had an answer for everyone.
And even when DiMarco made a charge with another gritty rally in a major to close with a 68, Woods responded with three straight birdies that allowed him to stride confidently up the 18th fairway at Hoylake and toward the claret jug.
No one could stop Woods from winning his 11th career major at age 30. He is tied with Walter Hagen for second on the career list and is one step closer to the 18 professional majors won by Jack Nicklaus, the only mark that matters to Woods.
He had to work for this one because of DiMarco, equally emotional and inspired while coping with a more recent loss.
DiMarco’s mother, Norma, died of a heart attack July 4 in Colorado, and he made sure his father joined him on this trip to the northwest of England as a chance to heal. DiMarco, who pushed Woods into a playoff at the Masters last year, did all he could to deliver.
He made a 25-foot birdie on the par-3 13th to pull within one shot of Woods, then made a 50-foot par save on the 14th to stay in the game, a putt that rattled the cup and made everyone wonder if he had help from above.
“I had a lot of divine intervention out there,” DiMarco said. “I had my mother with me all week.”
Woods followed with another low, penetrating iron into 8 feet on the 14th for a birdie. And after DiMarco scrambled for a birdie on the 16th to keep his hopes alive, Woods answered with an 8-foot birdie into the heart of the hole at No. 15.
Woods finished at 18-under 270, missing an 8-foot birdie putt that would have matched his record (19 under) set at St. Andrews six years ago.
His father was with him for his first taste of links golf in the 1995 Scottish Amateur at Carnoustie, when Woods was a 19-year-old amateur. As he walked up the 18th fairway with a two-shot lead, his ball safely behind the green, memories of Dad poured forth.
“After the last putt, I realized my dad’s never going to see this again, and I wish he could have seen this one last time,” Woods said at the trophy presentation. “He was out there today keeping me calm. I had a very calm feeling the entire week, especially today.”

METHOD MAN ISN’T FEELING PLAYBOY MANSION

Rapper and actor Method Man was allegedly made to feel a little uncomfortable by the staff at the Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Mansion during a recent visit. The rapper told SOHH.com, “Hugh Hefner probably cool as hell, but the rest of them motherf****rs are probably racist pieces of s**t. We’re not welcomed there black folks.” The rapper also commented on the lack of black centerfolds.

In related news, Method Man will release his fourth solo album, 4:21…The Day After, on August 22nd. The album will feature guest appearances by Fat Joe and Styles P, with production by Dr. Dre, Scott Storch, and RZA.

The latest single from the project is “Say” featuring Lauryn Hill.

JA RULE HEADING TO AFRICA, LAUNCHES GAMBLING WEBSITE

Ja Rule is scheduled to perform in Nairobi, Kenya, this Friday, July 28th where he will present the winner of the Celtel Kenya Win a Porsche World Cup promotion with the keys to a Porsche. Allhiphop.com reports that the rapper will then be joined by Ashanti for a performance in nearby Tanzania on Saturday night.

In related news, Ja Rule recently launched starsonpoker.com, a new online gaming website which is part of the Action Poker Network. Players can visit the website to play Chinese Poker, Texas Hold’em, 7 Card Stud and other games for cash prizes.

PHARRELL WILLIAMS SAYS ‘I’M NOT A SINGER’

Super-producer Pharrell Williams will release his oft- delayed solo album, In My Mind, tomorrow, Tuesday, July 25th. The latest single from the album is “Number One” featuring Kanye West. The album also features guest appearances by Nelly, Slim Thug, Gwen Stefani, Pusha T, and Daddy Yankee.

During an interview with New York’s Daily News, Williams said, “I’m not a singer. I’m just expressing myself.” The producer added, “With my production [projects] I like to color the world. But as an artist I’m a creative fundamentalist. It’s for members only, like a secret handshake.”

Williams also offered an explanation for releasing the project’s lead single, “Can I Have It Like That” featuring Gwen Stefani, over eight months ago. He said, “That was stupid. But it was also about being an artist and not giving a f***. Warhol didn’t give a f***. Basquiat didn’t give a f***. They cared about how they moved the culture.”

CORMEGA AND LAKE RECORD JOINT ALBUM

Queensbridge-based rappers Cormega and Lake will release a joint album, My Brother’s Keeper, on August 22nd on Fast Life Music. The album will feature guest appearances by Fat Joe, Mr. Cheeks, Greg Nice, Kira, and Uniqua Star with production by Buckwild, J. Waxx Garfield, Ax Tha Bull, Ski, Jay Boy, Hot Day, Now or Laterz, Get Large and Cormega.

Lake, who recently signed a solo deal with Suge Knight’s Death Row East imprint, said in a released statement, “It’s a lot of different things me and Cormega went through together over the years. We put that into music, and it came out great.”

RON ARTEST TO OPEN FOR FAT JOE DURING EUROPEAN TOUR

The Sacramento King’s Ron Artest has been tapped to open for Fat Joe during his European tour which kicks off on July 28th in Lisbon, Portugal. The tour is scheduled to wrap on August 8th in Oslo, Norway.

Artest will release his debut album, My World, in October. The NBA star-turned-rapper explained that the NBA would be a lot more welcoming to an inexperienced newcomer than the rap industry has been to him. He said: “If he’s good, you know what I’m sayin’, if he’s good, I’mma be like, ‘Bring him on, we want to win. That’s it.’ But in the rap game, it’s like, ‘If he’s good, don’t bring him cause I want to win.’ ‘Cause you know it’s not enough sales for everybody.”

Artest added: “You know it’s not enough sales for everybody actually to be rich. But there’s enough people in the world for everybody to be living alright. But everybody want to be filthy, filthy rich off the rap game so there’s a lot of haters out there. And what we’re doing is, we’re finding the haters. We’re crushing them like that.”

My World features guest appearances by Mike Jones, Capone, Nature, Allure, and TBone.

DAVID BANNER PATIENTLY AWAITING SCREEN DEBUT IN ‘BLACK SNAKE MOAN’

Mississippi’s David Banner is known for his rap skills, but the Southern hip-hop artist has also made his way into film. He appears in the forthcoming film Black Snake Moan, which was directed by Hustle And Flow’s Craig Brewer and stars Christina Ricci, Samuel L. Jackson, Justin Timberlake, and S. Epatha Merkerson. The film has been completed for a while, but Banner has had to wait on his big-screen debut while Brewer and his studio work out a release date.

Banner says he has learned to be patient because he has faith in director Brewer: “I’ve watched Craig and he’s one of the most intelligent guys I’ve ever met in my life. I think he’s sort of holding the film ’til right around the time they start thinking about nominating things and then he’s gon’ drop it. He’s a very intelligent guy and I would rather him hold the film and release it at just the right time so that it’ll benefit all of us.”

Meanwhile, Banner is voicing a character for the new animated series That Crook’d ‘Sip, which is set for the Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim block. Banner’s current album is Certified, which peaked at Number Three on Billboard’s Top Hip-Hop/R&B Albums chart.

JANET JACKSON SAYS LOVE HAS GIVEN HER A NEW OUTLOOK

Janet Jackson appeared at a press conference in Atlanta on Friday to talk about her upcoming album, 20 Years Old. Looking relaxed in a striped tank top and two-tone cap, Jackson revealed that finding love with producer Jermaine Dupri gave her a new perspective on life that is reflected on the new album, according to AP. “I always wanted to find love,” said the 40-year-old singer. “Now that I found love, I’m in a different space now.”

Working with a mate can raise issues for some people, but Jackson said that in or out of the studio, her man keeps things running smoothly. “Jermaine is drama-free,” she explained. “He’s a very giving person. The challenges have been all joy working with Jermaine.”

Things are going so well between the pair that the twice-married Jackson is even thinking of having a family of her own. “I would love to have kids. I never thought I would ever want any,” she confessed. “But being with Jermaine really changed my mind on all that. I don’t mind adopting.” Jackson made no mention of any wedding plans with 36-year-old Dupri, though tabloids reported recently that Dupri had told friends he would wed the pop star in September.

The singer, who shed some 60 pounds after a film role fell through, says she is currently looking at five different scripts for future projects. In the meantime, Jackson heads to Europe this week for magazine shoots and pre-promotion for the new album.

20 Years Old is due September 26th and features production by Dupri as well as longtime Jackson collaborators Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. The first single is “Call On Me” featuring Nelly.

TAMAR SAYS PRINCE ENCOURAGED HER TO BE HERSELF

Singer and songwriter Tamar says that working alongside her mentor, international superstar Prince, has been not only creatively fulfilling, but made her more confident as an artist.

Asked about working with Prince on her forthcoming debut album, Tamar said: “Oh my goodness. Every day is something new. I mean, when I first started he really encouraged me to be me and I had never heard anyone say it’s OK to do rock songs as an African American girl. It’s OK to come out singing ballads, it’s OK to come out and do whatever you want to do. No one had ever come out and given me that challenge. So it’s a blessing every day, I learn something new every day.”

Tamar’s new album, Milk & Honey, is due August 29th. A first single is due shortly.

Black History Fact

In 1943, tennis legend Arthur Ashe was born in segregated Richmond, Virginia. He began to play tennis at the age of 10, taught by Dr. Walter Johnson, who had instructed tennis icon Althea Gibson. Ashe became the first African-American to play on the U.S. Davis Cup team, as well as the first male African-American Wimbledon and U.S. Open champion. Ashe was famous for his reserved demeanor, and his combination of athletic talent, grace, and dignity inspired legions of young athletes. In 1979, Ashe suffered a heart attack, and heart problems forced him to retire from tennis the following year. After retirement, he became involved in many causes — he was an outspoken opponent of South African apartheid and racial discrimination, he devoted a great deal of time to numerous health- related organizations, and he worked to develop young African-American athletes, just to name a few of the many issues and organizations to which he devoted himself. In 1983, after a heart bypass operation, Ashe received a blood transfusion. Five years later, when entering the hospital for another operation, Ashe discovered that he had contracted the AIDS virus from the transfusion. He died on February 6th, 1993, at the age of 49.
In 1976, “I’ll Be Good To You” by the Brothers Johnson peaked at Number Three on the pop chart.
In 1979, Chuck Berry was sentenced to four months in prison for income tax evasion. He had underpaid $200,000 on his 1973 tax return.
In 1980, After Midnight by the Manhattans was certified gold.
In 1984, Jermaine Jackson’s self-titled album was certified gold.
In 1991, the Jungle Fever soundtrack by Stevie Wonder was certified gold.
In 1993, “Weak” by SWV peaked at Number One on the pop chart.
In 1995, TLC declared bankruptcy.
In 1996, The Remix Album by Boyz II Men was certified gold and platinum.
In 2000, promoters cancelled the remainder of a Supremes reunion tour due to poor ticket sales. The tour featured Diana Ross without either Mary Wilson or Cindy Birdsong, who refused to join due to money.

TUPAC SHAKUR’S DEATH ROW RECORDINGS LICENSED IN RINGTONE DEAL

Koch Records has entered into an agreement with Hudson Entertainment that will allow the latter to create ringtones and ringback tones from the Death Row Records catalogue which includes music from Tupac Shakur, Dr. Dre, and Snoop Dogg.

Hudson Entertainment plans to make the ringtones and ringback tones available for mobile phone users in the U.S. by August.

The ringtones and ringback tones are just the latest steps in Tupac Shakur’s musical legacy, which has mushroomed since his death in 1996. The rapper has released numerous posthumous albums which fuel his diehard fans’ theory that he is still alive. His mother, Afeni Shakur, explained that it was okay for some of his fans to hang on to the theory. She said: “So for myself I know that my son is physically dead. I know that intimately, but I also know that it’s alright, it’s okay for us to still like him and feel him alive.”

The group’s Yung Ho explained that the group has moved past their beef with Lil’ Wayne. He said, “You never know what the future may hold. It wasn’t no serious bad blood like that. We done clicked up with Juvenile and UTP, and we got some big thangs in store with Sqad Up and B.G. He was on our first DVD and he’s on our next one coming out, so it’s all good.”

The new album will feature guest appearances by David Banner and Bizzy Bone. The first single from the project is “Parking Lot” featuring Mannie Fresh.

The group is currently on a 32-city promotional tour.

OUTLAWZ AND DEAD PREZ TO RELEASE JOINT ALBUM

The Outlawz and Dead Prez are set to release their new album, Can’t Sell Dope For Ever, on Tuesday, July 25th. Young Noble of the Outlawz told SOHH.com, “We got a mutual respect for each other and we got a common message, just off inspiration. [We're] trying to get these youngsters something to listen to other than the normal shit. So it’s definitely just not a compilation. We’re like a super group right now.”

The two groups will continue to release projects together in the future. Young Noble and Sticman of Dead Prez are working on a project, Soldier To Soldier, which will be released on October 3rd. The two groups will also release a second joint effort, Banging On The System, later this year.

MC HAMMER CATALOGUE SOLD FOR $2.7 MILLION

Evergreen Copyright, a Nashville, Tennessee based company, has purchased the rights to MC Hammer’s musical catalogue for $2.7 million from the trustee of the rapper’s bankruptcy estate. Allhiphop.com reports that MC Hammer filed for bankruptcy protection in 1996 after accumulating over $14 million in debt even though he earned more than $33 million in 1991.

Evergreen was launched six months ago by industry veterans Joel A. Katz, David K. Schulhof, and Richard Perna.

Schulhof said, “We made tremendous progress in only six months. The MC Hammer catalog brings some of the best selling and most popular rap songs of all time to Evergreen’s catalog.”

He added, “We anticipate that many songs in the MC Hammer catalog will emerge as a perfect fit for licensing in movies, television shows, and corporate advertising.”

Evergreen Copyright also owns the rights to Teddy Riley’s musical catalogue.

LYFE JENNINGS TO CO-HOST YOUTH AIDS FORUM IN WASHINGTON

Urban singer and songwriter Lyfe Jennings will join Ashley and Wynonna Judd to host the Washington Mystics YouthAIDS Forum next week in Washington, D.C. The artist and the talented celebrity sisters, who are both YouthAIDS Ambassadors, will be joined by HIV/AIDS experts at the daylong event, set for July 27th at the Verizon Center. The Forum will include a panel workshop for youth with the experts as well as a game by the WNBA’s Washington Mystics. Jennings will perform at halftime.

Jennings, who served 10 years in prison before he was signed to Columbia Records, has been performing since he was a child. He says that singing for audiences comes naturally to him, as he told me: “Yeah, I definitely think it’s natural now. Like even before I got out, you know, I was doing a lot of programs when I was inside. I mean, that’s like one of my favorite things to do. I’m almost at my happiest point when I’m on stage doing my thing.”

Jennings will release his sophomore album, The Phoenix, on August 15th. The new album, the follow- up to his smash 2004 set Lyfe 268-192, will feature guest appearances by Three Six Mafia, Project Pat, and the G-Unit’s Young Buck. The first single from the set is “S.E.X.”

TYRESE LOOKING TO RELEASE TWO NEW SINGLES FROM DOUBLE ALBUM

R&B singer and aspiring rapper Tyrese can’t wait to release his new double album, Alter Ego, this fall so fans can get to know his rap persona, Black Ty. The singer told MTV.com, “I’m going to have my R&B video have about 20 seconds of the hip-hop song, and the hip-hop video will have 20 seconds of the R&B song. I’m going to have two different covers, shoot two different videos and just change the world up.”

The rapper added, “It’s one of them things where once again, I’m making a transition from one world to the other. I line myself up with the right folks, and they get behind me. Now it’s about the fans hearing it and being exposed to it and feeling good about it.”

Alter Ego will feature guest appearances by Snoop Dogg, Game, Chingy, David Banner, Mannie Fresh, Paul Wall, Ice Cube and Kurupt.

Tyrese explained how Black Ty has been paying dues. He said: [“Everybody in the industry has a CD in their hand. And I’ve been handing them out myself. I walked in with a box with a backpack on, hand to handing it, you know what I’m sayin’? Cause my aka is Black Ty but Black Ty ain’t nothing. He’s un- established. He’s broke. Tyrese is good. So I’m trying to get out there and pay my dues to put Black Ty on the map.”

INDIA.ARIE, ANTHONY HAMILTON, MAZE, TEENA MARIE & MORE SET FOR BERMUDA FEST

Gladys Knight, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, Charlie Wilson of The Gap Band, India.Arie, Teena Marie, and Anthony Hamilton. are among the artists lined up for this year’s star-studded Bermuda Music Festival, set for October 4th through 7th at the Atlantic island’s Royal Navy Dockyard.

Also set to appear at the festival will be the classic soul groups The Original Manhattans featuring Gerald Alston & Blue Lovette, Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes, and The Trammps. The concerts will be hosted by comedian and radio personality Steve Harvey.

Harvey flew into Hamilton, Bermuda on Thursday for the Bermuda Ministry Of Tourism’s press conference to announce the festival line-up as well as details of the companion charity golf tournament. Despite spending just 45 minutes on the island before having to re-board a flight back to New York, Harvey found time to crack jokes about golf and being forced to fly economy class, as well as express amazement at Bermuda’s turquoise waters and litter-free countryside, according to the island’s Royal Gazette.

“I couldn’t think of a better way to advertise Bermuda’s close proximity (to the U.S.) than to have one of the most recognized celebrities slip in and out of our island in just under four hours…that’s pretty impressive,” noted Minister of Tourism Dr. Ewart Brown.

Tickets for the event are already on sale. For travel and ticket information, go to bermudatourism.com.

SMOKEY ROBINSON WANTS TO BREAK INTO ACTING

Smokey Robinson says that he’d eventually like to end up on the silver screen. Robinson told the San Francisco Chronicle that he definitely has the acting bug, but that he’s not ready to accept any offers just yet, explaining that, “I’m waiting for the proper (part) to come along. I don’t expect to star in any movies or anything like that. I just want a good role I can sink my teeth into.”

Robinson, who’s on the road this summer supporting his collection of standards, titled Timeless Love, added that he’s proud at how well his Soul In The Bowl food company has helped youngsters learn the basics of business: “The food thing came up, and one of the main draw points for me to get involved is we’re going to have seminars and forums and educational classes for young inner-city and minority kids.”

Black History Fact

In 1847, Dred Scott, a slave, files suit in the St. Louis Circuit Court claiming that his temporary residence in a free territory should have made him a free man. Scott would lose the case.
In 1943, former Supremes member Florence Ballard was born in Detroit. Ballard met fellow Supremes Diana Ross and Mary Wilson in the late ’50s. The group, originally known as the Primettes, was renamed the Supremes in 1961. Ballard initially shared lead vocal duties with Ross, but eventually became just a background singer. The group’s ascent to stardom brought with it many problems, and after increasingly unprofessional behavior, Ballard was dismissed from the Supremes and replaced by Cindy Birdsong. Ballard never achieved success on her own and fell upon hard times, dying in poverty on February 22, 1976 at the age of 32.
In 1966, The Supremes make the studio recording of “You Keep Me Hangin’ On.” The song tops Billboard’s Hot 100 for two weeks and R&B singles chart for four weeks.
In 1967, Revenge album by Bill Cosby was certified Gold.
In 1975, The Heat Is On album by Isley Brothers was certified Gold.
In 1975, the Jackson 5 announced that they’ll leave Motown Records for Epic (and change their name to “The Jacksons,” since Motown owns the name “Jackson 5″).
In 1995, singer Phyllis Hyman took her own life at the age of 44. Hyman began singing professionally in 1971 as a member of the group New Direction. After stints in Miami groups, Hyman moved to New York and Norman Conners featured her in his band. Hyman released her self-titled debut album in 1977. After signing with Arista Records in the late 70s, Hyman’s career took off. Her hits include “Somewhere In My Lifetime,” “You Know How To Love Me” and “Can’t We Fall In Love Again.” In 1986 she signed with the legendary Philadelphia International label, and her success streak continued. A posthumous album, Forever With You, was later released.
In 1997, Mike Tyson apologized publicly for biting Evander Holyfield’s ears during a heavyweight championship boxing match in Las Vegas two days earlier, saying he’d become angered after Holyfield head-butted him.

T.I. SELLS HIS FIRST SCRIPT

Rapper and actor T.I. recently sold his first screenplay to New Line Cinema. Allhiphop.com reports that the project, titled For Sale, was written by T.I. and his Grand Hustle label partner Jason Geter. The story centers around the worst used car lot in Atlanta and T.I. is slated to play a salesman.

In related news, T.I.’s theatrical debut, ATL, was released on DVD this week. The film grossed over $20 million when it opened in theaters earlier this year. The DVD also includes T.I.’s video, “What You Know,” as well as a special presentation about the various artists upbringing in Atlanta.

T.I.’s latest album, King, has sold approximately 1.3 million copies since its release. The latest single from the project is “Why You Wanna.”

PHARRELL WILLIAMS PLANS TO BUILD COMPUTER CENTER

The Neptunes’ Pharrell Williams is in negotiations to build a computer resource center in his hometown of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Don Maxwell, Virginia Beach’s economic development director, told a local paper that some of the specifics such as size, location, and costs are still being worked out but that a proposal could be ready for the Virginia Beach’s City Council by next month. Williams told Allhiphop.com, “One of these kids could be the next chemist for Pfizer.”

The producer is in negotiations with Apple and Microsoft to support the center but he’s agreed to appear in the new Hewlett Packard ad campaign titled, “Computer is Personal Again.”

Jay-Z, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, snowboarding gold medalist Shaun White, and television executive Mark Burnett are also participating in the ad campaign. The king of crunk, Lil Jon, broke down the popular sound which he helped to bring to the mainstream. He said: “Crunk is the only form of music that…Like, what we do is we, like, to say our main goal is to get a party off the hook, make people just want to wild out. That’s what crunk music is, and that’s what it does.”

The tracklisting for Crunk Hits Vol. 2 includes: Lil Jon – “Snap Yo Fingers” featuring E-40 and Sean Paul (Youngbloodz); Chamillionaire – “Turn It Up” feat. STICKY FINGAZ CLEARED OF WEAPONS CHARGES

Rapper and actor Sticky Fingaz got some good news this week when weapons charges against him were dropped in Manhattan Criminal Court. The rapper was arrested last October after a housekeeper discovered a nine millimeter handgun in his midtown Manhattan hotel room after he checked out. The rapper turned himself in and was charged with having an unregistered and unlicensed gun. New York’s Daily News reports that the charges were dropped because prosecutors were unable to prove that he was the owner of the gun found in the hotel room.

Fingaz, whose real name is Kirk Jones, is the star of Spike TV’s Blade series.

· The rapper has also begun the transition to behind the camera. Earlier this year he completed his second film, Caught On Tape, with him in the director’s chair. The film’s cast includes Vivica Fox, Kel Mitchell, Malik Yoba, Cedric The Entertainer, Bokeem Woodbine, and Joe Torry. Caught On Tape is due out later this year, as is Fingaz’ directorial debut, A Day In The Life.

When I spoke with Fingaz, he noted that he wanted to be innovative. He said: “It’s like, you know, we just trying to be innovative. We writing scripts, putting movies out — not just acting in ‘em, being behind them, trying to take it to the next level ’cause, you know, you only live once.”

VH1 ANNOUNCES FREESTYLE 59 CONTEST

VH1 has announced the return of the Freestyle 59 competition which allows rappers from across the country to upload their best rhyme for consideration in the competition. The rhymes, which must be 59 seconds or less, will be accepted from July 19th to August 21st. Rappers can upload their rhymes at freetyle59.vh1.com.

Five finalists will be selected and, beginning September 12th, one will be voted off through online and mobile voting. The final two contestants will be flown to New York City for the taping of the third annual Hip Hop Honors. The winner will be announced during the broadcast on October 17th at 9 p.m. and awarded $10,000 and a chance to meet one of Hip Hop Honors Honorees.

This year’s VH1 Hip Hop Honors will be hosted by Ice T and the honorees are Wu-Tang Clan, Afrika Bambaataa, Russell Simmons, MC Lyte, Rakim, Beastie Boys, Ice Cube, and Eazy E.

INDIA.ARIE PLANNING A ‘REAL’ TOUR LATER THIS YEAR

India.Arie has been playing concerts since the June 27th release of her chart-topping third album, Testimony, Vol. 1: Life & Relationship. But Arie told me that she just considers these spot dates, and has something more ambitious planned for later in the year: “I don’t consider it exactly a tour yet. I’m doing spot dates. We are gonna have that through August, and then the latter half of the year I’m gonna put together a tour package, like a real, real tour where I got the stage and do lights and all that stuff. For right now I’m doing these spot dates but I’m still, like, every show is still my show.”

TAMAR DAVIS READY FOR ‘SUNDAY’ SINGLE

Singer and songwriter Tamar Davis is preparing for the August 29th debut of her first album, Milk & Honey. The artist came under the wing of Prince, who helped Tamar polish her songs in the studio as well as get valuable exposure on stage during his recent 3121 shows. Tamar also appeared on the tune “Beautiful, Loved And Blessed” from the Prince album.

Known by just her first name, Tamar is also ready to release her debut single, “Sunday In The Park.” The Houston-born singer recently explained the tune: “‘Sunday In The Park,’ it’s about a love story where a girl has to make a hard decision to end a relationship and finally she decided, ‘You know what? I can’t do this anymore,’ which is what a lot of young women go through now, so it’s like a stand for young women, and men as well. So it’s a ballad, I decided to go with a ballad to start out the gate. I wrote the song, I collaborated with Prince as well. Yeah, we just went for the gusto with this one. And it’s my favorite ballad on the album.”

According to MTV.com, Tamar was signed to Universal in 2005, the same time that Prince made his distribution deal for 3121.

OUTKAST SAYS NO TO ‘OPRAH’

In recent months, Oprah Winfrey has come under fire for not inviting rappers to appear as guests on her show. The media giant was hoping to make a statement by inviting OutKast to her show in September but the group has turned down the invitation. Fox News reports that the group didn’t decide against appearing as a show of solidarity to other rappers but rather because group member Andre 3000 wouldn’t commit to the mid-September tape date.

The group will release their new album, Idlewild, on August 22nd and their feature film debut, Idlewild, on August 25th. So a mid-September date with Oprah Winfrey may not have done much for the promotion of the projects.

Group member Big Boi plans to tour in support of the new project while Andre 3000 is turning his energy towards acting and his new cartoon project. The rapper explained: “The cartoon, it will be a Cartoon Network prime time animated show. Growing up some of my favorite cartoons were Peanuts and Fat Albert. So it’s a music-based cartoon.”

The rapper added: “Every show, you’ll get a song that’s written and produced by me and it’s called Class of 3000. It’s about an entertainer at the top of his career. He quits the business and moves back to his hometown to teach five or six musically gifted kids.”

EMINEM WON’T FACE ASSAULT CHARGES

Rapper Eminem will not face assault charges after he allegedly got into a beef with a man at a Detroit strip club last Thursday, July 13th. SOHH.com reports that Miad J, the man who Eminem allegedly punched several times in the face during an altercation in the bathroom of the Cheetah’s strip club, has decided not to press charges.

Miad J initially told investigators that he was attacked by the rapper and his bodyguards after he told them to ease up on an overzealous fans but over the weekend he decided to drop the charges, according to Detroit Police spokesman James Tate. The case is now closed.

CHI ALI TRYING TO HELP HIS COUSINS GET A DEAL FROM BEHIND BARS

Incarcerated rapper Chi Ali has started a letter writing campaign from behind bars to help his younger twin cousins, Guns & Glamour, land a record deal. Allhiphop.com reports that Chi Ali has written letters to DJ Red Alert, Big Tigger and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs in hopes of landing the duo a deal.

Guns & Glamour, which is comprised of twins Hollywood (Darryl Alexander) and Beloved (Diandra Alexander) were previously signed to Noontime Recordings/Capitol in 1998 but the project was shelved due to creative differences with the label. The group is currently working on a new album, Both Sides To The Story.

Chi Ali is serving a 12-14 year prison sentence for the shooting death of his ex-girlfriend’s brother, Sean Raymond. The two men allegedly got into a dispute over $300 and CDs. The rapper was on the run for two years before he was apprehended in the Bronx in 2001.

Chi Ali was the youngest member of the Native Tongues collective. The rapper released his only album, The Fabulous Chi-Ali, in 1992 at the age of 14.

JANET JACKSON ASKS FANS TO DESIGN COVER ART FOR ’20 YEARS OLD’

Superstar Janet Jackson’s forthcoming album 20 Years Old, marks the 20th anniversary of her breakthrough album, Control. To celebrate that milestone, the singer is asking her fans to submit designs for the album’s cover through a national on- line contest. A total of four winners will see their designs featured on Jackson’s CD cover art when the set is released on September 26th.

From now through July 25th, entrants can go to music.yahoo.com/janetjackson and download any of 33 different photo images of Jackson to use in their vision of the new cover. Each design will be assigned a link that users can send to friends and family.

Jackson herself will choose her four favorites as the grand prize winners. Sixteen runners-up will win her entire music catalog on CD.

20 Years Old will feature production by Jermaine Dupri and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. The first single is “Call On Me” featuring Nelly.

MARY J. BLIGE STILL WAITING FOR FILM BREAKTHROUGH

Mary J. Blige is on the road with The Breakthrough Experience, but she also has her eye on the future. That may include a movie role, as Blige has been linked to an upcoming film biography of the singer Nina Simone. She told me that it’s one of several celluloid projects she’s considering: “Yeah, there’s a lot of things coming up. I’ve got a lot of scripts. This Nina Simone thing is still there, you know. I guess Paramount is … I guess the … sorry, the director, producer of the film, they’re still trying to figure out what they want to do. So I’m just reading the script and that’s it.”

Blige’s latest album, The Breakthrough, debuted at Number One on the Billboard 200 chart in December with first-week sales of 727,163, the most ever by a solo female R&B artist. The album has sold more than two million copies to date.

Blige will be on The Breakthrough Experience tour until September. Her next show is tonight (Wednesday, July 19th) at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.

BUSH TO ADDRESS NAACP CONVENTION FOR FIRST TIME IN FIVE YEARS

After snubbing the oldest civil rights organization in the country for five years, President Bush announced Tuesday that he will address the NAACP’s annual conference in Washington this week because he sees “a moment of opportunity.” Bush was roundly criticized by the NAACP membership and other civil rights activists as the first sitting president to refuse invitations to speak before the confab.

Asked about Bush’s decision to speak before the group on Thursday, White House spokesman Tony Snow noted: “He wants to because I think there’s a moment of opportunity here. I think the president wants to make the argument that he has had a career that reflects a strong commitment to civil rights.”

The White House denies that Bush was prompted to defend the administration’s handling of the Hurricane Katrina disaster last year. The government was widely criticized for a slow response that some charged was tinged with racism because the devastation affected primarily poor and black Gulf Coast communities.
Analysts say that Bush’s move is also motivated by the GOP’s need to court African American voters before the next congressional elections in November.

Bush addressed the NAACP as a presidential candidate in 2000, but not since he was elected.

CHRIS ROCK HAPPY HIS SITCOM ROLLING TO THE CW

Comic Chris Rock says he was relieved and happy that the smash comedy he produces based on his own Brooklyn boyhood has survived the merger of networks UPN and the WB. The new CW Network is set to begin airing episodes of Everybody Loves Chris beginning October 1st. “I thought I might have to drive a cab,” he joked Monday at the Television Critics Association’s summer meeting.

Rock also narrates and writes the show, which premiered on UPN last season. With its move to the CW, Everybody Loves Chris shifts from Thursdays to Sundays this fall as part of the network’s block of black-oriented comedies. It also gets an earlier timeslot, 7 p.m.

Rock noted that of the comedy’s first 22 episodes, he hated exactly three but won’t say which ones. “Oh, I can’t do that. I got three uncles I hate, too, but I won’t tell them,” he said.

Viewers can expect two future episodes to feature Oscar winner Whoopi Goldberg, who will play a new neighbor whose granddaughter appeals to young Chris. Rock says he’s a fan: “It’s not like stunt casting. Stunt casting to me is like, ‘Hey, Shaq just came over.’ We got Whoopi Goldberg to act because she’s very funny.”

Rock recently wrapped shooting a new movie titled I Think I Love My Wife, which is due in theaters early next year, and has plans for a standup comedy tour.
