DIDDY AND HIS GIRLFRIEND WELCOME TWIN GIRLS

Sean “Diddy” Combs and his girlfriend Kim Porter welcomed twin baby girls into the world early Thursday morning, December 21st. Essence.com reports that Porter gave birth to a five pound girl at 7:56 a.m. at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City. The second girl was born at 7:58 a.m. and weighed in at five pounds and four ounces.

Diddy’s spokesman, Robert Zimmerman, said in a released statement, “Diddy received an early Christmas gift. It gives us great joy to announce the arrival of Diddy’s twin girls….[Diddy] made it just in the nick of time for the delivery. Both Kim and the girls are doing great.”

The mogul was filming an adaptation of A Raisin In the Sun in Toronto but had a plane on standby so that he wouldn’t miss the newest additions to his family.

Combs and Porter have an eight-year-old son, Christian. Diddy has a 12-year-old son, Justin, from his former girlfriend, fashion stylist Misa Hylton-Brim and Porter has a 15 year-old son, Quincy, from her relationship with ’80s R&B star Al B. Sure.

JAY-Z AND HIS NEW JERSEY NETS GET APPROVED FOR MOVE TO BROOKLYN

Rapper Jay-Z is part of an investment group headed by developer Bruce Ratner that purchased the New Jersey Nets in 2004 for $300 million. SOHH.com reports that the rapper and his partners got some good news on Wednesday, December 20th, when New York State’s Public Authorities Control Board voted unanimously to authorize the Atlantic Yards development, a reuse of an area near the downtown Brooklyn rail yard that would include a new home for the Nets, office towers and thousands of apartments.

The project is expected to cost $4 billion and would allow the Nets to play at the new stadium for the 2009-2010 season.

New York Governor Pataki said, “I look forward to seeing [developer] Bruce Ratner and [architect] Frank Gehry’s grand vision turned into reality and to eating a hot dog as I watch the Brooklyn Nets play in Brooklyn’s new arena in the 2009-2010 season.”

The Governor added, “The Atlantic Yards project, two years in development, will create tens of thousands of construction jobs and thousands of permanent jobs, and bring professional sports back to Brooklyn for the first time since the departure of the Dodgers to Los Angeles nearly 50 years ago.”

STYLES P HAS MIXED EMOTIONS ABOUT THE RELEASE OF NEW ALBUM

Lox member and D-Block co-CEO Styles P finally released his sophomore album, Time Is Money, on Tuesday, December 19th. The rapper has had to wait three years to release the set while he dealt with label politics of Interscope Records and the Ruff Ryders.

Styles P toldme about the delayed release: “I mean obviously I wish it was three years ago. And I wish nobody never heard the songs, some of the songs that they heard before. But as an artist I feel great, as a business person I’m like ‘aaaah.’”

The rapper added: “‘Cause on the business side I know what you need to do good, you know what I mean? Like I don’t have a single. I don’t have a video. I don’t have any of them things but then I got a good strong faith in myself and the fans that love me. So I’m like I got mixed emotions on it but overall I guess I would say I’m more glad to have it out so the fans get the opportunity to hear the songs that they didn’t hear.”

Time Is Money features guest appearances from Akon, Gerald Levert, Jagged Edge, J -Hood, Mario Winans, Floetry’s Marsha Ambrosius, Rashad, Talib Kweli and The Lox with production by Swizz Beatz, Akon, and Scott Storch

WU-TANG CLAN OFFICIALLY INK DEAL WITH SRC RECORDS

After years of speculation, it is now official. The Wu-Tang Clan will reconvene for a new album set to hit stores next year. SRC Records chief Steve Rifkind said via his blog, “I just got off the phone with Divine and RZA from Wu-Tang, we are coming back, we are joining forces for one album, coming up in 2007. I don’t know what the name of the album is but we are back, its official. Wu-Tang and Steve Rifkind are back together.”

Rifkind signed the group to his Loud Record label in the early ’90s.

The Wu-Tang Clan is made up of RZA, GZA, the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Method Man, Raekwon, Inspectah Deck, Ghostface Killah, U-God, Masta Killa, and Cappadonna, who became an unofficial group member following the release of the group’s platinum 1993 debut, Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). The group’s last release was 2001’s Iron Flag.

SRC Records roster currently includes: Akon, David Banner, Jae Millz, and Remy Ma.

NAS’ EX WORKING ON REALITY SHOW

Nas’ ex-girlfriend and mother of his 12 year-old daughter, Destiny, is working on a reality show as a follow-up to her recently released tell-all book, It’s No Secret. In the tell-all, Bryan describes how she cheated on Nas with NBA star Allen Iverson and rapper Jay-Z.

Bryan told Essence magazine, “Telling all is a full-time job. I still love SC (Jay-Z), and I still love Nas. Love is an energy that can never be destroyed.”

She added, “It wasn’t my decision to make this a public affair. I’m not an MC; I can’t go in the studio and respond to individuals. So when Jay-Z and Nas recorded songs about me, they opened this door.”

In related news, Nas released his new album, Hip Hop Is Dead, on Tuesday, December 19th. The latest single from the project is the title track, “Hip Hop is Dead.”

TYRESE TAKES DOUBLE ALBUM TO TOP FIVE

Singer, actor, and rapper Tyrese has lodged his brand-new double album Alter Ego in the top five of both the R&B and Hip-Hop charts. The set, which features R&B tunes by Tyrese on one disk and rap selections by his hip-hop alter ego Black Ty on the other, debuted this week at Number Four on the R&B Album charts and Number Three on the Rap Album chart, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The multi-talented performer sold 115,957 copies of the genre-busting album during its first week, landing Alter Ego at Number 23 on the Top 200 Albums chart. It’s the Watts, California native’s best debut chart showing of his career.

Tyrese says that he’s happy that he’s gotten so much support for the project, especially since he encountered a number of naysayers along the way who said the double project was a pipe dream. He said: “You know, I made history on Tuesday when the album came out, because never in the history of music has there been a double album done like this: One whole side is R&B and the other side is hip-hop with the same person. So the album is rightfully titled Alter Ego, and the fans showed up.”

The performer adds that while he initially encountered some resistance to the idea from his label, they have come to the table. And with a busy acting schedule — he starred in this year’s Waist Deep and co-starred in Annapolis after last year’s Four Brothers — he used interview opportunities to hype his pet project. He said: “You know, I had an opportunity to go on MTV and on TRL and you know, I’m doing six, seven hundred interviews every time I put out a movie and I had an opportunity to promote my double album Alter Ego for the last two and a half years. So I was promoting a double album that never existed, so I spoke it into existence.”

The album features three singles: The ballad “One,” produced by the Underdogs; “Turn Ya Out” featuring Lil’ Jon; and the rap track “Get It In.”

BRIAN McKNIGHT SPENDING HOLIDAYS WITH FAMILY

Singer and songwriter Brian McKnight says he’s looking forward to spending the holiday season with his family. After a busy year in which he produced and released his Warner Bros. debut Ten, featuring the hit urban adult single “She Used To Be My Girl,” McKnight can afford a little down time.

The singer told me that Christmas is indeed a special time: “It’s the time for family to get together. My children live on the other side of the country with their mother, so I go spend Christmas with them and her family, like we’ve always done for years and years. And then the day after Christmas we go back to L.A., back to the home they grew up in, and we spend New Year’s there. I have a party at my house for my close friends and family there, and we reflect on the past year and look forward to the next one together.”

McKnight’s Ten stands at Number 17 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart after debuting at Number Four last week. The single “Used To Be My Girl” stands at Number Three for another week on the national urban AC airplay charts.

Another single, “Find Myself In You” from the soundtrack to Madea’s Family Reunion, is also on the urban AC chart at Number Nine.

BRENDA RUSSELL HEADED FOR HAPPY CHRISTMAS

Singer and songwriter Brenda Russell has had a great 2006. Her very first Broadway musical, The Color Purple, has earned accolades and broken box office records. Russell created the musical score with co-writers Allee Willis and Stephen Bray, and all three have been nominated for a Grammy this year for best musical show album. The first road company of The Color Purple is being cast for an April 17th opening in Chicago.

Russell also shares the challenge of living with diabetes as the cover story in the Winter 2006 edition of Radius magazine. The quarterly publication is dedicated to well being, health and happiness through education, science, and the joyful celebration of life.

As a songwriter, Russell has had the pleasure of seeing many prominent artists record her songs, including Sting, Oleta Adams, and Luther Vandross. In fact, she told me that her memory of her best Christmas present ever was learning that Vandross was recording her song: “The best Christmas present, I would say, was when Luther Vandross recorded ‘If Only For One Night’ — happened at Christmas, I found at out Christmas, and that was an amazing present, I was soooo excited. Because I wrote the song, for people that don’t know (laughs).”

DONALD TRUMP FIRES BACK AT ROSIE O’DONNELL

Donald Trump is firing back at Rosie O’Donnell just a day after The View host called the real estate mogul a snake oil salesman and declared him unqualified to determine if Miss USA should keep her title. In an interview which aired on Entertainment Tonight and The Insider, Trump said he’s contemplating suing Rosie for slander after she said that he was bankrupt in the past: “I’d probably sue Rosie because she doesn’t tell the facts. As an example, I’m worth many billions of dollars. Now she said I was bankrupt. I never went bankrupt. So, probably I’ll sue her because it’ll be fun. I’d like to take some money out of her fat a** pockets. I actually think they ought to look at her whole life and see where she’s coming from because I think she’s got some very deep-seated problems. Perhaps it should be Rosie who goes to rehab.”

Trump then responded by Rosie’s accusations that he’s a snake oil salesman: “Well she called me a snake oil salesman. And you know, coming from Rosie that’s pretty low because when you look at her and when you see the mind, the mind is weak, I don’t see it. I don’t get it. I never understood, how does she even get on television? I believe Barbara (Walters) made a terrible mistake in putting her on and I think Barbara’s probably paying a big price. If I were running The View I’d fire Rosie. I mean, I’d look her right in that fat ugly face of hers. I’d say, ‘Rosie, you’re fired.’”

The nasty words didn’t stop there. Trump then went on a personal attack against O’Donnell, calling her an ugly person: “We’re all a little chubby but Rosie’s just worse than most of us. But it’s not the chubbiness. Rosie is a very unattractive person, both inside and out. Rosie’s a person that’s very lucky to have her girlfriend and she better careful or I’ll send one of my friends over to pick up her girlfriend. Why would she stay with Rosie if she had another choice?”

Finally, Trump concluded his lashing of Rosie by calling her a failure: “Rosie attacked me personally because I was very happy when her talk show failed. The other thing that failed, and this was a real monster and everybody was suing her, was her magazine. Her magazine called Rosie was a total disaster. So I loved it. I gloat over it. I think it’s wonderful because I like to see bad people fail. Rosie failed, I’m happy about it.”

C-MURDER PENS HIS FIRST NOVEL

Rapper Corey “C-Murder” Miller is preparing to release his first novel, titled Death Around the Corner. The novel is a work of fiction centered around a man named “Daquan,” who grows up in a troubled neighborhood New Orleans’ Third Ward. Miller wrote the book during his recent incarceration for his alleged role in the murder of a 16-year-old in a Jefferson Parish nightclub. Death Around the Corner is also the first title in the new VIBE Street Lit franchise. “Death Around the Corner exemplifies what VIBE Street Lit is all about, bringing the phenomenon of urban fiction to the next level,” said VIBE Books editorial director Rob Kenner. Death Around the Corner hits stores December 26, 2006. An exclusive excerpt from the book is featured exclusively on AllHipHop.com. In related news, C-Murder is putting the finishing touches on Screamin 4 Vengeance, his first studio album in four years.

UNCENSORED TIMBERLAKE ‘SNL’ VIDEO AN INTERNET HIT

Last weekend, Justin Timberlake hosted Saturday Night Live and appeared in a special Christmas-themed “SNL digital short that has taken the Internet by storm. The skit features J.T. and cast member Andy Samberg in a music video of their tune that spoofs the R&B look and sound of the early 90s. The song, “D*** in a Box,” was aired during Saturday’s broadcast with the D-word edited out. However, NBC.com ran the uncensored version (featured below, but not safe for work), which has since ended up on YouTube and has made its way to an untold number of e-mail in-boxes. According to the New York Daily News, the clip has been viewed more than 320,000 times at NBC.

BOW WOW LAUNCHES CELEBRITY LOOK-A-LIKE CONTEST

Rapper and actor Bow Wow released his new album, The Price of Fame, on Tuesday, December 19th. To celebrate the album, Bow Wow and Photobucket.com have launched a special celebrity look-a-like contest. Fans are encouraged to send a photo and the name of the celebrity they look like to bowwowphotos@gmail.com.

The best entries will be featured on Bow Wow’s MySpace page and featured in a slideshow courtesy of Photobucket.com. Two lucky winners will receive autographed copies of The Price of Fame. The contest ends on January 13th, 2007.

The latest single from The Price of Fame is “Shorty Like Mine” featuring Chris Brown.

CHAMILLIONAIRE IS PLANNING HIS ‘ULTIMATE VICTORY’

Houston-based rapper Chamillionaire had a huge year in 2006. He won a MTV Video Award for “Ridin’” featuring Krayzie Bone, a BET Hip Hop Award, and received two Grammy nominations. The rapper is hoping 2007 will be an even bigger year as he plans to release his sophomore album, Ultimate Victory, in March.

Allhiphop.com reports that the new album will feature Alicia Keys, Kanye West, Busta Rhymes, T.I., The Game, Three 6 Mafia, Pimp C, Young Buck and others. The set will also feature production from Dr. Dre, Scott Storch, Swizz Beatz, Cool & Dre, and more.

Chamillionaire also plans to release a DVD project next year. He said, “It’ll have footage from a show where I’m performing and all the people in the crowd are saying my underground stuff. You know, I’ve got a lot of fans who have Chamillionaire tattoos, and people who have “Ridin’ Dirty” tattooed across their toes and crazy stuff like that. It’s like, fans don’t get to see the whole experience, so I’m gonna show them the hard work.”

But before the release of the new album and DVD, Chamillionaire is giving his fans a free mixtape, titled Mixtape Messiah 2, which they will be able to download from his website on December 24th.

In related news, the rapper also has plans to launch his own modeling agency, called Masterpiece Mind Frame, and to expand his car customization business, dubbed Fly Rydes.

Chamillionaire is a household name these days but the rapper explained how he came up with his unique rap name. He said: “Well, when I first started off rapping, my name was Chamillion. I was just a youngster who used to rap about all this material stuff, bling bling, but that was what the fans wanted to hear. So I just didn’t have a purpose behind my name, it was just Chamillion.”

The rapper added: “As I got older, I just wanted to have more purpose in what I was saying, you know, musically, and, you know, just everything I said I wanted it to come out with a purpose, you know? Some people look at the millionaire side of my name, some people will look at the chamillion side of my name, but when you put them together, the average person will think it’s about money and bling bling, but it’s not. It’s about an artist that’s rich in style.”

NAS TO VISIT ‘TRL’ AND ‘LAST CALL WITH CARSON DALY’

After a slow start, Nas has ramped up promotion of his new album, Hip Hop Is Dead…The N, which hit stores on Tuesday, December 19th. While Nas was a little slow in making appearances to support the project, the controversy surrounding the set’s title kept the album at the forefront of hip hop fans’ consciousness. Nas told the New York Post, “I’m just sitting back and enjoying this. I knew people would be upset over the title, and I’m glad. Some rappers are cursing me, but there are a lot who are applauding me silently.”

In addition to appearances on BET, Nas is scheduled to appear on MTV’s TRL on Wednesday, December 20th and Last Call With Carson Daly on Thursday, December 21st (check your local listings for time and channel).

Nas also has a half hour BET special airing on December 27th and a performance on BET’s 106 & Party on New Year’s Eve.

Eminem and his wife Kim Mathers got divorced for the second time Tuesday, December 19th. They were on their second marriage together, since re-tying the knot last January 14th. They filed for divorce in April.

The couple met with a Michigan judge and agreed to divide their assets according to a private settlement, and to share custody of their 10-year-old daughter Hailie Jade Scott, the Associated Press reported. Circuit Judge Antonio P. Viviano said afterwards that they “conducted themselves with dignity and respect,” and that “all in all, they are a very fine couple to deal with.”

Their first marriage was in 1999, and ended in 2001.

RUBEN STUDDARD KICKS OFF WEIGHT LOSS CHALLENGE IN ALABAMA

Singer Ruben Studdard worked hard to lose more than 100 pounds in the last year. Now the former American Idol champ wants to help other overweight people in his home state of Alabama do the same thing. He’s asking the 25 percent of the state’s residents who are obese to lose 10 pounds in eight weeks, for a total of 10 million pounds, according to USA Today.

Studdard will help kick off Scale Back Alabama, an eight-week weight-loss campaign, at a special event in Birmingham on January 4th. The program is being co-sponsored by Alabama’s hospitals as well as the Alabama Department of Public Health and Barber Dairies.

“I’m not where I want to be, but I’m on the right track, and I’m excited about encouraging other Alabamians to begin their own weight-loss journeys,” said Studdard, who learned to eat better and exercise more after a month long stint at the Duke Diet & Fitness Center earlier this year.

Studdard’s current single, “Change Me,” is currently Number One in urban adult airplay. The tune is from his latest album, The Return, which was released by J Records in October.

CHRIS BROWN IS YEAR’S TOP POP ARTIST

Teen newcomer Chris Brown has managed to emerge as the Number One Pop Artist of the Year, thanks to the chart performance of his album and several singles, according to Billboard.com. He is also the Number One Pop New Artist.

A little over a year after the release of his self-titled Jive Records debut, which charted in the Top 10 on the albums chart, Brown has racked up three singles on the Hot 100 recap: “Run It!” at Number 17, “Yo! (Excuse Me Miss)” at Number 44, and “Gimme That” at Number 69.

Brown picked up three awards to that effect at the recent Billboard Music Awards: Artist of the Year, Male Artist of the Year, and New Artist of the Year. He is also nominated for two Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best R&B Album.

The Tappahannock, Virginia native says he’s happy he wound up on the Jive label after he and his manager, former Def Jam exec Tina Davis, fielded a number of other label offers. He recalled: “She asked me did I want to see any other record deals and she took me to Atlantic, Jive, and Warner Bros. At the same time, Def Jam was still giving me the deal but I didn’t sign yet. So I looked at Jive’s offer and I really, really took maybe like two to three months’ process to really put the stamp on what I really wanted to do. So I just picked Jive at the same time because it was the best decision for me because they had the best successful younger artists as well as longevity.”

CHAKA KHAN, LALAH HATHAWAY, LEDISI & MORE ON MAURICE WHITE TRIBUTE

Singers Chaka Khan, Lalah Hathaway, Ledisi, Angie Stone and others perform the music of singer, songwriter, drummer, and producer Maurice White on the upcoming Stax Records compilation Interpretations: Celebrating The Music of Earth Wind & Fire, due March 27th.

This all-star set includes 10 EWF classics redone by the hottest R&B stars of the past and present. The set will feature Khan on “Shining Star,” Musiq Soulchild on “Reasons,” MeShell N’degeocello on “Fantasy,” the Randy Watson Experience (also known as ?uestlove of The Roots) featuring Bilal on “Can’t Hide Love,” Dwele doing “That’s The Way Of The World,” and new Stax signee Angie Stone performing “Be Ever Wonderful,” among other tunes.

White says he and his Kalimba Productions approached Concord Records with the idea early on. With the reactivation of the classic Stax label imprint, the project found the perfect home. “When we took the concept to Concord, they were very receptive and I felt confident that they would get behind the project and market it effectively,” said White in a statement. ” I am honored that this project was chosen as the one to re-launch a legendary record label for Black music.”

The first single will be a version of “September” by gospel star Kirk Franklin that is dedicated to the people of New Orleans, Mississippi and Alabama, who were hit hardest by Hurricane Katrina. The single will be available at radio in late January.

‘DREAMGIRLS’ LIFTED EDDIE MURPHY’S SPIRITS

The new millennium hasn’t been too kind to Eddie Murphy. With the exception of the Shrek movies, almost everything else he’s been in have been commercial and critical duds. There was The Adventures Of Pluto Nash and I Spy in 2002, Daddy Day Care and The Haunted Mansion in 2003, and the Robert De Niro cop movie satire Showtime, also in 2002.

Murphy may get a reprieve from his unmemorable ways in these closing days of 2006 with the release of Dreamgirls, the movie based on the Tony- winning musical. Dreamgirls has a stellar cast going for it and a loyal fan base from its Broadway run. Murphy said he’s thankful to be a part of a project with such solid credentials behind it: “It’s rare that you get to be in something like this, and you dream about being into something like this, with a cast that’s this strong. It just gives the opportunity for great performances. When they came to me, the part that they had offered to me, I remember that being a stand out part. Cleavant Derricks won the Tony for the role that I played. So, a bunch of good stuff to attract you to it.”

Dreamgirls is the story of a Supremes- like girl group played by Beyonce Knowles, American Idol’s Jennifer Hudson, and actress Anika Noni Rose.

The movie opens everywhere Christmas Day (December 25th).

CARMELO ANTHONY APOLOGIZES FOR HIS ACTIONS

The NBA has meted out punishment to the Denver Nuggets and New York Knicks players who were involved in the ugly brawl at the New York game on Saturday night (December 16th), principally Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony, who was suspended along with six others by league commissioner David Stern on Monday (December 18th).

Anthony will be benched for 15 games for shoving the Knicks’ Nate Robinson and sucker punching player Mardy Collins. His salary will also be docked by some $641,000.

His outburst was sparked by Collins, who moments earlier deliberately fouled Denver guard J.R. Smith on a drive to the basket. Both Smith and Robinson will sit out 10 games.

Anthony issued an apology to the league, his mother, and his fans on Monday. It read: “Last night’s altercation with the Knicks escalated further than it should have. I take full responsibility for my actions in the matter. In the heat of the moment I let my emotions get the best of me. I apologize to the fans, the Denver Nuggets, the NBA, my mother, and my family for the embarrassment I have caused them. I ask you all for your forgiveness.”

He continued: “I also want to make a personal apology to Mardy Collins and his family. My actions were inexcusable, and I am sorry for making this an even more embarrassing situation.”

Anthony went on to say that the incident is more painful because he had just achieved the opening of the Carmelo Anthony Youth Center in Baltimore. “It’s my hope that we work to move forward from this event, and never let something like this happen again,” he concluded.

DOCTOR CREATES NASAL IMPLANT UNIQUE TO AFRICAN AMERICANS

Thinking about getting a nose job but don’t want to look like Pinocchio or a Barbie doll? A New York plastic surgeon claims to have come up with a unique nasal implant for rhinoplasty surgery — or a nose job — that preserves the ethnicity of African American and other non-white patients.

Dr. Oleh Slupchynskyj (Olay Sloo-chin-skee), the Director of The Aesthetic Facial Surgery Institute of New York and New Jersey, has developed a custom nasal “S” implant that he says is the first of its kind.

Dr. Slupchynskyj, who is white, recently completed a retrospective study of African American patients that were given the “S” implant to evaluate their level of satisfaction with their nasal dorsal augmentation. Among his findings were that most patients were not seeking to change the look of their ethnicity, but were interested in achieving facial harmony, and the “S” implant helped achieve that goal, leading to an increase in self-esteem for the patients.

More information is available about the doctor and his techniques at facechange.org and africanamericanrhinoplasty.com.

O.J. SUED FOR BOOK MONEY

The father of Nicole Brown Simpson’s slain pal Ronald Goldman wants a piece of O.J. Simpson’s book pie. Fred Goldman filed suit against the former running back this week, claiming that Simpson illegally set up a fake business to collect fees for his If I Did It book and TV special. Though the projects never saw the light of day, Goldman insists that Simpson was paid millions of dollars and that the money belongs to his family because Simpson still owes them more than $30 million as part of a civil judgment.

Goldman’s attorney believes that Simpson has probably already spent the money, but is pushing for $1.1 million in punitive damages anyway. As part of the lawsuit, Goldman’s camp also wants to know how Simpson got around having to turn over earnings for the book and TV deals.

In the If I Did It projects, Simpson explained how he would have killed Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman in 1994 if he was responsible for the murders.

The book and TV special were cancelled last month after a deluge of criticism.

Judith Regan, the woman responsible for green-lighting Simpson’s book, was fired from her job Friday (December 15th) for making anti-Semitic remarks to her colleagues.

MISS USA KEEPS CROWN; SENT TO REHAB

Miss USA Tara Conner has been this close to losing her crown but she got a reprieve yesterday (December 19th) from pageant owner Donald Trump. Instead of firing the Kentucky native for her reported hard partying ways, Trump allowed Conner to continue her Miss USA reign as long as she goes to rehab and keeps out of trouble.

Conner got her self into trouble when reports of her unabashed drinking and New York club-hopping had filled the pages of local papers and gossip columns. She also turned heads with her other late night activities, such as making out with Miss Teen USA Katie Blair and disappearing with her into her swank pageant-sponsored digs. Conner was breaking the law as well with her outings, as she didn’t turn 21 until Monday (December 18th).

Conner has been Miss USA for eight months. She denied that she was an alcoholic in a press conference this week announcing her status, but admitted that she needed help. She did not speak about her relationship with Miss Teen USA.

Donald Trump says that he’s giving Tara Conner a second chance: “She left a small town in Kentucky and she was telling me that she got caught up in the whirlwind that is New York. I’ve always been a believer in second chances. Tara is a good person. Tara has tried hard. Tara is going to be given a second chance.”

Tara Conner thanks Donald Trump for letting her remain Miss USA: “I’ve had a really big blessing bestowed upon me, and you’ll never know how much I appreciate Mr. Trump for saving me on this one. It really takes someone with a wonderful heart, a heart of gold and a blessed soul, to take something that he doesn’t have to keep me around. You heard about the other things he could have said, you know, ‘you’re fired.’ And I think that’s what everybody expected, especially me.”

Tara Conner thanks her mother and her lucky stars that she’s still Miss USA:”And I’m so happy to have my mother (cries) because she has made me the person that I am. And trust in this, that I do have a very solid heart and when I love, I love dearly. I love this job. I love the people that I work for and that I work with. And I love all the causes that I put forth so much effort here.”

DOUG E. FRESH REFLECTS ON HIP-HOP AND NEW CARTOON SERIES

As one of Hip-Hop’s best live performers, Doug E. Fresh can rest assured that his place in rap history is secured. Nevertheless, that hasn’t stopped the rhyme veteran from educating current rap fans on the essence of the culture through his new cartoon series Ultra Five. “It’s about the five different elements of Hip-Hop. I’m also building a film studio in Harlem,” Doug E. Fresh told AllHipHop.com. “I should hopefully be dropping an album too.” The rapper revealed his plans during a recent trip to London, where he and fellow rap legend Big Daddy Kane were on hand to perform at an exclusive party thrown by footwear giant Puma.

A SHOW FOR WHITE RAPPERS?

VH1 has announced a new series that will premiere on January 8. In conjunction with Ego Trip, the network will present Ego Trip’s White Rapper Show.

Hosted by MC Serch of 3rd Bass and producer Prince Paul, the show will be set in the South Bronx and the premise is to look for the next great white rapper.

Ten contestants from across America will live in a run-down South Bronx tenement referred to as “Tha White House,” and will be put through challenges that will test their knowledge of Hip-Hop culture, as well as their ideas about race.

Guests like Grandmaster Flash, Fat Joe and Kurtis Blow will be brought in to critique the aspiring rappers who will be competing for $10,000.

CARMEN BRYAN LOVES NAS….AND JAY-Z?

We all know Carmen Bryan as Nas’ baby’s mother. She has also been called the woman who led to the Jay/Nas beef. She’s the “you know who” who “did you know what with you know who.” She’s also the woman who has released a tell-all book about her affairs. Now, she may just have a reality TV show in the works. Recently, she opened up to Essence about how she feels. “I still love SC, and I still love Nas. Love is an energy that can never be destroyed,” she said.

Her recent book gained a lot of publicity due to the fact that it banked on her love affair with both rappers. The revealing tales have led to mixed reviews from readers and critics.

According to Vibe, the new show will also reveal some of the “secrets” she has to tell about S. Carter and Nas.

KIM FIELDS COMMENTS ON PREGNANCY

Actress Kim Fields says she and her boyfriend, Broadway actor Christopher Morgan, decided just last summer that it was the right time to welcome the pitter patter of little feet into their lives. “We were on the subway one day and Chris said, ‘I’m ready to start our family,’” Fields, 37, told People magazine. “It was beautiful and I started to weep.”

Introduced to the world as a little girl in the Mrs. Butterworth’s commercial and best known for her breakout role as Tootie on Facts of Life, Fields says she has known Morgan, 30, “a couple of years.” She describes him to People as “a Southern guy and very much the gentleman, an old soul. Fantastically handsome and stunningly built. At some point he’ll be in your Sexiest Man Alive issue.”

As for her pregnancy, Fields gushes: “It is amazing, surreal. For as maternal as I’ve felt all my life, it still has the ‘Wow!’ factor.” The couple does not know the sex of the baby yet, but Fields says she and Chris already have names picked out: “If she’s a girl, Aria Grace, and if he’s a boy, Sebastian Alexander.”

NAOMI HEADED BACK TO OPRAH’S COUCH?

British newspaper The Mail reported Sunday that trouble-prone supermodel Naomi Campbell has booked an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show to address her penchant for attacking the help. “Naomi and Oprah have been friends for a long time and have been talking for a while about her coming on the show,” a friend of Campbell’s was quoted as saying.

Ironically, Campbell was filming an episode for the Oprah show at her New York home last January when she caught one of her pending assault cases. Her former housekeeper Ana Scolavino claims she was injured when Campbell threw her jewel-encrusted blackberry at the back of her head.

The model has two other assault-related lawsuits to deal with. Former maid Gaby Gibson claims Campbell beat and racially abused her earlier this year, while Campbell’s former assistant Amanda Brack is suing the runway diva for verbal and physical abuse. Last Wednesday, Campbell was cleared of attacking her former counselor.

ISAIAH WASHINGTON HANGS WITH DUBYA

Actor Isaiah Washington last week went from “Grey” to red - as in Republican -with his arrival in Washington D.C. to emcee the White House Summit on Malaria, an event hosted and championed by First Lady Laura Bush.

During his stay in the Nation’s Capital, the Grey’s Anatomy star met President Bush, whom he calls “genuine,” according to People magazine. He refers to the First Lady as “very warm… (the summit) is her baby.” The half-day event included world leaders who are working to stamp out malaria, a curable and preventable disease that still kills 1 million people a year, many of them African children. Last year, the U.S. launched a five-year, $1.2 billion plan aimed at cutting malaria deaths in half in hard-hit Africa.

Mrs. Bush’s own staff collected the $600 they would have spent collectively on holiday gifts for each other, and instead used it to buy 50 bed nets to protect people from malaria-carrying mosquitoes. “It goes to show you that the passion and compassion (for eradicating malaria) is indeed working,” said Washington.

While in town, Washington also reportedly went to Vice President Dick Cheney’s holiday party, People reports.

LUDACRIS AND BIG BOI WEIGH IN ON HIP HOP IS DEAD DEBATE

Ludacris and OutKast’s Big Boi are the two latest rappers to weigh in on the debate sparked by the title of Nas’ latest album, Hip Hop Is Dead…The N. Ludacris told MTV.com, “I don’t feel that hip-hop is dead. I feel like the South is keeping it alive. What we do is hip-hop. Some people may not feel that way. You gotta respect some people’s opinion, but hey. You gotta stay to your opinion in the game.”

Ludacris added, “Because the South is dominating it right now. Saying that hip-hop is dead is like saying the South is dead too. They may not like some of the music going on in the South. But everybody in the South is saying, ‘We are keeping it alive.’ … At the end of the day, hip-hop is what you make it. What we do in the South isn’t hip-hop — that’s what some people think. We think it is. Some people say it’s country-rap tunes. Hip-hop is what you make it.”

Big Boi also shared his thoughts on the state of the game. He said, “Everybody is entitled to their opinion, but if it’s dead, why is the South boomin’? We got the ball right now. … But nobody better never come out their mouth wrong about me or my homeboy [Andre 3000] ever. Ever! Tell them. We don’t even play. I’ll slap the s**t out of you. That’s why you never hear about OutKast getting into nothing.”

ANDRE 3000 CATCHES THE RAP BUG

OutKast’s Andre 3000 has been busy pursuing an acting career. The rapper recently wrapped production on Battle In Seattle and he scheduled to shoot Semi-Pro with Will Ferrell next. But Andre 3000 is experiencing a lyrical resurgence of sorts that’s led to his return to rapping after primarily singing the past couple of years. The rapper is featured on remixes to Lloyd’s “You” with Nas, DJ Unk’s “Walk It Out” with Jim Jones and Big Boi, and Rich Boy’s “Throw Some D’s” with Jim Jones, The Game, and others.

Andre 3000 told MTV.com, “I’m just trying to find a mood. What’s the next mood to be in? It’s not just about recording songs and putting them out. I have to do them if I have something to say. In the meantime, I’ve been doing a lot of remixes.”

The rapper added, “I’ve been getting in the studio with some of these new people that’s out. I’ve just been showing up at the studio and people been asking, ‘Yo, would you get on this remix?’ Just asking — they never think it could happen. I’ve been like, ‘Yeah, yeah. Cool.’ New fans that only hear ‘Hey Ya!’ or ‘The Way You Move’ forget I started out rappin’.”

Big Boi is excited about his partner’s return to form. He said, “Our homeboys produced those songs and asked us to be on these songs. If you got the urge to rap, you never lose it. Just when everybody thought it was safe … I’m telling you, we’re not to be f**ked with. We just doing what we doing. We just having fun living. My man is back out here rhyming. You know what that is.”

YOUNG DRO AND YUNG JOC SHOPPING A SCRIPT

Atlanta-based rappers Young Dro and Yung Joc are looking to make the transition to big screen and the two have come up with a script, titled Young & Yunger. Young Dro told Allhiphop.com, “We’re shopping the movie around, talking to [Ice] Cube, Charlie Mack, Will Smith’s people and stuff like that.”

Mack and Smith served as executive producer’s of ATL which was T.I.’s springboard into more lucrative acting roles, including a co-starring slot in American Gangster with Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe.

Yung Joc explained that in addition to penning his own scripts, he’s been receiving some offers. The rapper said: “Acting, you know what I’m sayin’, I just picked up a script the other day. Actually it’s crazy how fast this stuff is coming ’cause you know always think you have to work it to that spot.”

Joc added: “But I got some big name producers and film, screenwriters right now who just gave me some scripts or whatever. Well something to look over to kinda see if it’s something I would be interested in.”

BABY AND B.G. COME TOGETHER FOLLOWING A TRAGIC DEATH

Cash Money Records co-CEO Bryan “Baby” Williams and former Cash Money Millionaire B.G. recently ended their beef following the tragic death of Baby’s sister Tamara Williams last week. Williams was killed in an automobile accident last week when a driver went the wrong way on a one-way street and collided with her 2006 Toyota Camry. She was 26 years old and the mother of three.

Baby and B.G. have been at odds since B.G. left Cash Money Records in 2001 over a money dispute, but SOHH.com reports that the two men recently spoke while calling in to New Orleans Q93 and the conversation was aired.

B.G. said, “I just wanted to say I’m sorry despite what you and me been through. I knew Tamara personally, we grew up together, we go back. I just wanted you to know that my heart goes out to you and the whole Williams family.”

Baby responded, “I can respect that. I’ll put everything on the side for that.”

B.G. added, “I’m not on your side like I used to be, but for something like this to happen, I can still feel like your pain. I feel like I’m right there with you.”

The other driver, Jason Williams, remains in critical condition, so authorities have been unable to question him.

RICH BOY GETS HELP FROM HIP HOP HEAVYWEIGHTS ON ‘THROW SOME D’S’ REMIX

Alabama-based rapper Rich Boy recently released his debut single, “Throw Some D’s,” from his forthcoming album, Product of the Hustle, which hits stores in March. The rapper has recruited some rap heavyweights for the song’s remix, including Andre 3000, The Game, Jim Jones, Fat Joe, and Busta Rhymes.

Rich Boy told MTV.com, “Busta killed it. He’s talking about a Cadillac I never even heard of before.”

He appeared to be most pleased with Andre 3000’s verse, saying, “I think right now Andre is trying to prove a point. He’s trying to keep the hip-hop thing moving. He’s just doing what he can and trying to make the best out of the game right now. If he hears something he really f**ks with, he jumps on it.”

The rapper added, “Andre showed major love and put his verse down. You know Andre — you have to read between the lines. He’s rapping about people doing stupid s**t — in the streets and trying to make sense of the situation. He’s trying to make you open your eyes as far as selling dope and things like that. His verse is deep. He touches on how the police kicks down your door and you have to flush the dope down the toilet. But you definitely have to read between the lines.”

CIARA FLATTERED BUT MYSTIFIED BY COMPARISONS TO THE LATE AALIYAH

Singer Ciara’s light soprano, hip-hop-inspired music, midriff-baring styles, and hot dance moves have caused some to draw comparisons between her and the style of the late singer Aaliyah. But Ciara, whose sophomore album Ciara: The Evolution debuted at the top of the pop chart last week, says she’s mystified by the comparisons.

Asked about Aaliyah, Ciara says she’s not sure why fans want to compare her to the late singer, who died in a plane crash in the Bahamas in 2001. While she feels they have unique sounds, she says it’s an honor to be seen in the same light.

She told me: “I will start by saying that I take it as a compliment when people say that I remind them of Aaliyah. And more than anything I think it is — the compliment I really, really take in is — the people that were personally attached to her tell me that I remind them of her as far as how her personality was and I hear them say a lot of great things about how she was as a person. Like, they talk very highly of her. So that’s what means a lot to me.”

Ciara’s current single “Promise” stands in the Top 10 on the national urban airplay charts.

WHITNEY, CISSY & DIONNE UNITE ON TYLER PERRY SOUNDTRACK SONG

Atlanta-based rappers Young Dro and Yung Joc are looking to make the transition to big screen and the two have come up with a script, titled Young & Yu.

The upcoming soundtrack to the new Tyler Perry film, Daddy’s Little Girls, will feature a who’s who of R&B, pop and gospel artists. But one of the highlights is a song that unites all the performing members of the Houston clan: Whitney, her mother Cissy, and her cousin Dionne Warwick. The soundtrack, due in stores and online on January 16th, also features performances by R. Kelly, Beyonce, Brian McKnight, Yolanda Adams, Governor, Anthony Hamilton, and others.

Whitney, Cissy, and Dionne appear together on the album’s tune “Family First,” which features other members of the Houston clan.

Another multiple-artist effort is a remix of the track “Struggle No More–The Main Event” featuring Hamilton with Jaheim and Musiq Soulchild.

Daddy’s Little Girls stars Gabrielle Union and Idris Elba of HBO’s The Wire in a story about a single father who struggles to make ends meet as a garage mechanic while he raises his three young daughters on his own. When the courts award custody of his daughters to his unfit ex-wife, Monty tries to win them back with the help of a tough attorney, with whom he forms an unlikely relationship.

The film is Perry’s follow-up to his box-office champs Madea’s Family Reunion and Diary Of A Mad Black Woman. It opens nationwide on Valentine’s Day on February 14th.

PATTI LABELLE CANCELS GOSPEL TOUR

Patti LaBelle has cancelled the rest of her tour. LaBelle says she cancelled The Gospel According to Patti tour due to differences with the tour’s promoter and hoped to restart the tour at some point because she had a good relationship with sponsors. “I really had hoped to continue to reach the gospel audience as we had originally planned,” LaBelle said in a statement released by her publicist.

JOHNTA AUSTIN LOOKING FORWARD TO MORE GRAMMYS

Singer and songwriter Johnta Austin is in the running for several Grammy Awards at the ceremonies coming up this February in Los Angeles. He’s been nominated for Song Of The Year and Best R&B Song for co-writing Mary J. Blige’s “Be Without You” and Best R&B Song for Mariah Carey’s “Don’t Forget About Us.”

Though just 25 years old, the Atlanta-based Austin is already a Grammy winner. He earned his first golden gramophone earlier this year, for co-writing Carey’s “We Belong Together” with Jermaine Dupri, Manuel Seal, and Carey herself.

Asked about that whether he’d already earned Grammy honors this year, Austin said: “I did, I did for best R&B song, for ‘We Belong Together.’ And yeah, that was fun. That was great. The Grammys are the Super Bowl of music, if you will, and we won. We have a championship, we have a ring (laughs).”

Austin’s first solo album, Ocean Drive, is due on December 26th. The first single was “Turn It Up.”

ANGIE STONE, ISAAC HAYES, MAURICE WHITE AT REACTIVATED STAX LABEL

Beverly Hills-based Concord Records announced Monday (December 18th) that it will be reactivating the Stax Records label, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The renewed label has signed on singer-songwriter Angie Stone, veteran Stax music maker Isaac Hayes, and a project from Earth Wind & Fire’s Maurice White. The history-making label was part of soul music’s forefront in the ’60s and ’70s, with hits by Booker T. & the MGs, Otis Redding, the Staple Singers, Sam & Dave, the Bar- Kays, Rufus and Carla Thomas, Hayes himself, and many others.

“Stax always has been and always will be Soul Music, I was a part of that,” said Hayes in a statement. “I am coming back to Stax because there is still so much to do. It’s like coming home.”

Grammy winner Stone, whose music has been hailed for its connection to the old school sound, was also ecstatic. “The thrill of putting out music on the label that brought the world Otis, Booker T, the Staples and so many other artists who made me want to sing in the first place is simply indescribable,” she said. “I simply can’t believe that I will be a Stax artist — and I’ll be label mates with Isaac Hayes. The staff at Stax share my belief that soul has to stay in touch with its origins. We’re going to make beautiful music together.”

The first new release on Stax will be Interpretations, an all-star tribute to the songs of EWF mastermind Maurice White. Due in the first quarter of 2007, the disc will feature performances by Chaka Khan, Musiq Soulchild, Me’Shell NdegeOcello, Bilal, Dwele, Kirk Franklin, Angie Stone and others.

Also on the Stax schedule for 2007 is Stax 50: A 50th Anniversary Celebration, a two-CD, 50- track anthology featuring the most enduring Stax hits, including Sam & Dave’s “Soul Man” and “Hold On, I’m Comin’”; Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay,” Booker T. & the MGs’ “Green Onions,” Isaac Hayes’ “Theme from Shaft” and “Never Can Say Goodbye”; The Staples Singers’ “Respect Yourself” and “”I’ll Take You There,” Jean Knight’s “Mister Big Stuff,” and many others. The unique package will include extensive liner notes.

The Stax 50th anniversary release schedule for the year will include other definitive collections, rare performances, unreleased tracks and more from the Memphis R&B imprint in new, deluxe packages.

Release dates for the new projects will be announced later.

TAYE DIGGS’ ‘DAYBREAK’ YANKED BY ABC

The sun has set on the deja-vu drama Daybreak. ABC has yanked the serial thriller, which starred Taye Diggs, from the Wednesday night lineup where it had premiered as a mid-season replacement for ratings champ Lost. The series was scheduled to finish out its weekly run through December 27th, but ratings were so poor that the network let the axe fall on it after last week’s airing.

Daybreak had earned early critical acclaim with its story of Los Angeles detective Brett Hopper, played by Diggs, who is forced to relive the same day over and over until he can figure out how and why he was framed for the murder of an assistant district attorney.

This is the second attempt at TV stardom for film and Broadway stage performer Diggs, who appeared in one season of TV’s Kevin Hill between 2004 and 2005. His film credits include The Best Man, Rent, Brown Sugar, The Wood, and How Stella Got Her Groove Back.

According to Variety, Wednesday nights on the network will now be filled with comedy repeats.

HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON, BARACK OBAMA PROSPECTS WEIGHED IN NEWSWEEK

The cover of the new issue of Newsweek magazine features possible presidential candidates Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama. The inside story, titled The Race Is On, explores whether America is ready for a historic first in the White House in 2008: the first woman president or the first black president.

Asked about his potential Democratic rival for the nomination, Obama told the magazine, “I’m not going to go there. I have tremendous respect for Hillary Clinton. She’s an outstanding leader in the Democratic Party. She’s earned her stripes.”

When asked if America was ready for a black or female president, Obama added, “I absolutely think America is ready for either … what I’ve found is that the American people — once they get to know you — are going to judge you on your individual character. Whatever the flaws in the process, people get a fairly accurate read by the end of the campaign.”

According to the story, the odds historically favor a woman over an African-American; but psychologically and generationally, they may favor Obama over Hillary. Both are now expected to launch their campaigns early in the new year.

The December 25th double issue of Newsweek is on newsstands now.

KATIE COURIC GOODBYE TOPS TiVo POLL

Katie Couric’s tearful departure from the Today Show has been voted the year’s most memorable TV moment. According to viewers polled by the digital recording company TiVo, Couric’s goodbye in May was far more exciting than her first days on the CBS Evening News, which didn’t even register on the survey.

Second on the TiVo list was Mel Gibson’s sweaty, post-DUI interview with Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America. Number Three went to Oprah Winfrey for her on-air scolding of A Million Little Pieces author James Frey, followed at Number Four by CSI characters Sara and Grissom finally getting together. Number Five was Faith Hill’s gasp when losing in the vocalist of the year category to Carrie Underwood at the CMA Awards.

Matt Lauer gave Katie Couric a touching sendoff: (Matt Lauer) “I hope you know that we’re all going to be wishing you well, even if quietly. And we wish you the best in every single aspect of your life. We love you and we’re going to miss you. Cheers!” (Katie Couric) “Thank you so much everyone. I couldn’t ask for a nicer, more wonderful send-off, so, I’m going to be kissing you all all day long so, I hope I didn’t get make-up on everyone, thank you. And to everyone in TV land, thanks so much.”

SNOOP YOUTH FOOTBALL LEAGUE PLAYER IS HONORED

The Snoop Youth Football League (SYFL) honored one of its own Saturday (Dec. 16) at its All- Conference game at Citrus College in Glendora, CA. Cenyon Usher, a Lawndale, CA seventh grader, received the first It’s In Your Hands achievement award from league sponsor Cutter Gloves. The award, given to a player each year, is based on academic progress, sportsmanship and character. Usher, a tight-end for the Woodcrest Giants Pee-Wee Division, was awarded with a $1,500 scholarship fund and an all-expenses-paid trip to the Snooper Bowl, which is set to take place Feb. 3, 2007 in Miami. The Rogers Middle School student, who has never received anything lower than a B in school, cited his mother Imani Westbrooks as his motivation for aiming high.”My mom is my hero … I know my mom is proud of me, but I want to make her even prouder,” said Usher, who said he aspires to “become first a good and honest man” when he gets older.

KELIS, FUNKMASTER FLEX FEATURED IN NEW FORD EDGE CAMPAIGN

Kelis has been tapped to star in a new urban marketing campaign promoting the 2007 Ford Edge crossover utility vehicle (CUV) with an ad campaign featuring a new song titled “Push it to the Edge.” The radio spot, which also features a cameo appearance by Hot 97’s Funkmaster Flex, starts airing Wednesday (Dec. 20) on various national and syndicated radio shows, including The Steve Harvey Morning Show and The Tom Joyner Morning Show. Tonight in New York, Kelis will kick off the new relationship with Ford during Nas’ black and white ball, which is being held to celebrate the release of his new album Hip-Hop is Dead. “I am an informed buyer who likes to shop around for what I like,” Kelis said in a statement. “I prefer bold designs and that’s what I see when I look at the Edge. I believe it was built to defy expectations and change people’s perceptions, two concepts that have helped me define who I am.”

TEMPTATIONS LEADER SAYS BERRY GORDY WAS RIGHT TO RESTRUCTURE THE SUPREMES

Otis Williams says that Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr. was right to replace the late Florence Ballard with Diana Ross as the Supremes’ frontwoman. The new Dreamgirls movie, which is based on the Supremes’ story, chronicles in part Gordy’s choice to showcase Ross over Ballard.

Williams, who grew up with the Supremes in Detroit, told Britain’s Mojo magazine that, “Before they hit, Florence had sung most of the leads, and she certainly had the biggest voice in the group. But you can’t argue with Berry’s decision that Diana’s voice was the commercial one.”

By the mid ’60s, Williams, who was dealing with substance abuse problems in his own group, was also concerned about Ballard’s hard-partying ways, explaining that, “I knew that Florence was drinking too much, and when we talked she’d say everything was under control, but you could feel things starting to unravel for her.”

Ballard was kicked out of the Supremes in 1967 and replaced by Cindy Birdsong. Ballard died in 1976 at the age of 32 from coronary thrombosis, a blood clot in one of her coronary arteries.

Former Temptations lead singer Dennis Edwards told me that it seemed as though Diana Ross’ ambition ultimately forced Ballard into the shadows: “They say Florence actually was the best singer in the group. She didn’t get the opportunity to be the best singer in the group, because Diana was a little bit more energetic. You know Diana was the type — when she wanted something she got it, you know? (laughs)”

MELBA MOORE JOINS NATIONAL TOUR OF ‘CHICAGO’

Tony award-winner Melba Moore will join the national tour of Chicago on December 26th. Playbill.com reported that Moore will play the role of prison matron “Mama” Morton when the show hits Philadelphia’s Merriam Theatre. Moore’s run will last through December 31st.

Moore began her career singing backup for such legends as Aretha Franklin, Liza Minnelli, and Dionne Warwick. Moore was in the original company of Hair, and went on to win a Tony for her role in Purlie.

On February 11th, Moore will appear at the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts in Brooklyn, New York at the On Broadway With Melba Moore retrospective. The show will highlight her “legacy in Broadway, television and radio.”

Melba Moore replaced Diane Keaton in the original Broadway cast of Hair, becoming the first African-American actress ever to replace a white actress on Broadway.

In 1996 Moore took over the role of Fantine in Les Miserables on Broadway, becoming the first the first black actress to play that role.

BEYONCE NOT FEUDING WITH DIANA ROSS OVER ‘DREAMGIRLS’

It seems that Golden Globe nominee Beyonce has to put rumors to rest daily. This time, she is squashing chatter that there is a feud between her and Diana Ross over her character in Dreamgirls. “I actually spoke to her at a Clive Davis party,” said Beyonce of the Motown legend at a press conference to promote the film, according to MTV.com. “She was so nice. And it made me very happy because I respect her and I want her to be happy.”

Beyonce plays the lead singer of the fictional ’60s girl group The Dreams in Dreamgirls, though the musical’s rags to riches story has long been said to be based on the lives of Diana Ross & the Supremes. But Beyonce stressed that no comparisons between her character and Ross should be drawn.

“Deena is not Diana Ross,” the singer clarified. “It was very clear that a lot of the story lines never happened to Diana. I kind of borrowed some of her posture and makeup, but it stops there. She’s definitely stronger and has a different story.”

Recently, reports have surfaced noting that Ross is not pleased by the film and it protesting its release. But Ross has not made any public statements to that effect.

Asked about the rumors that Ross was upset by the new Dreamgirls, Beyonce replied, “I would hope she wasn’t. I love her. I think she’s amazingly talented. I hope she enjoys the movie.”

In other Dreamgirls news: The African- American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) has named “Dreamgirls” as the Best Picture of 2006. Written and directed by Bill Condon, the Dreamworks/Paramount Pictures musical captured a majority vote by the organization, which is comprised of African-American media professionals from across the nation. In addition to Best Picture, “Dreamgirls” captured the most AAFCA honors of 2006, including Eddie Murphy as Best Supporting Actor, Jennifer Hudson as Best Supporting Actress and Bill Condon as Best Director.

JENNIFER HUDSON BOWLED OVER BY GLOBES

Singer and actress Jennifer Hudson is overwhelmed by the Golden Globe nomination and numerous critical accolades for her performance as Effie in Dreamgirls. “I’m just trying to breathe right now, I’m so excited,” Hudson told EURweb.com after being nominated as Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy or Musical.

The singer, who beat out 782 others to win the coveted role of Effie, was in the dressing room of NBC’s The Today Show in New York, watching the live Golden Globe nominations announcements, when she heard her name.

“All they said was ‘Jen’ and we were screaming and crying and just jumping around excited,” Hudson recalled. “Then I had to run out there on stage and do my interview and hop on stage and sing, and I didn’t even know what I was doing or what was happening because it was so overwhelming. I’ve never experienced that many emotions in one minute … a second … a moment.”

The onetime American Idol finalist added that she can’t quite grasp all the attention, honors, and celebrity. “I’m just grateful that I’m here,” she continued, noting all the many American Idol hopefuls and all of those who auditioned to Effie. “What were the odds of me being here right now and to receive such an honor as to be a Golden Globe nominee? Even if I don’t get it, just to be able to consider that is enough for me, really.”

Dreamgirls netted a nomination as Best Motion Picture-Comedy or Musical, as well as a Best Actress and Best Song nomination for Beyonce, and Best Supporting Actor nomination for Eddie Murphy. The film opens nationally on Christmas Day (December 25th).

And of course there has been some comparision to Jennifer Hudson’s remake of Jennifer Holidays’ classic blockbuster, “And I am Telling You”. You be the judge. Click here in case you’ve never seen or heard Holiday’s rendition.

JAMIE FOXX SHOWS HIS MEAN SIDE IN ‘DREAMGIRL’

Oscar winner Jamie Foxx stars in the upcoming film Dreamgirls along with the star power of Eddie Murphy, Beyonce Knowles, Jennifer Hudson, and Danny Glover. In the film, Foxx plays Curtis Taylor Jr, a shady used- car salesman who becomes the manager of an up- and-coming girl group and grows to be a pretty ruthless record man. “Curtis is the American Dream,” Foxx said of his character. “The capitalistic version; the ‘by any means necessary’ version.”

Some called the portrayal “lecherous” and even Oprah Winfrey remarked that she just didn’t like Foxx being so mean in regard to his portrayal as Curtis. But Foxx said that it was important that he be a strong villain in the film. “I think that it was important to play Curtis unforgiving and relentless so they would have somewhere to go. Everybody has a Curtis in their life. You can think of a person that told you, ‘You ain’t gonna make it or you ain’t gonna do this’ and you wanted to make it because of that,” he said. “That’s what Beyonce, Eddie and Jennifer had to get away from. The persona of Jamie Foxx and the character are different.”

While Foxx was left out of the recent Golden Globe nominations (Murphy, Knowles, and Hudson were nominated), critics are still heralding his performance. The actor agreed that it is newcomer Jennifer Hudson who steals the show and Foxx is more pleased than threatened by the Hudson hub-bub. In fact, he too was moved by the starlet’s performance.

Dreamgirls opens Christmas Day in theaters nationwide. For more on the film, check out www.dreamgirlsmovie.com.

TRICK TRICK FINALIZING DEAL WITH G-UNIT

Detroit-based rapper Trick Trick released his major label debut, The People Vs. Trick Trick, earlier this year on Universal Motown Records to a disappointing 56,000 sales, according to Nielsen Soundscan. The rapper had enjoyed large sales number as an independent artist but he’s isn’t ready to abandon the major label system yet. SOHH.com reports that Trick Trick is close to finalizing a deal with G-Unit Records.

The rapper told the Detroit Free Press, “Out of 50 Cent’s own mouth he told me: ‘Trick, you’re an artist that people gonna listen to because they know that what you say is real. All over the country, they respect you in the streets. So you need that priority at a label to be pushed right to sell 4 and 5 million records.’ So to have a person like 50 Cent who did, what, 11 million, 15 million records, tell me eye to eye something like that, it helped me to know that I will be important instead of just another notch in the belt for a record label. Plus G-Unit Records is like a family. It’s not just a record label.”

The deal isn’t finalized but Trick Trick has been busy recording a new album which he hopes to release in July on G-Unit Records. So far the album features guest appearances by Eminem, Tony Yayo, Young Buck, Ice Cube, WC, Young Jeezy, Kid Rock, and production by Dr. Dre.

Trick Trick has been perfecting his craft through mixtapes and indie albums for over 10 years. The rapper shared how he caught the bug after watching 1985’s Krush Groove. Trick Trick said: “You know what I’mma tell you. Honest to God. One day, it was Thanksgiving Day whatever year Krush Groove came out and I went to the show with my brother-in-law and his homies. And when I seen Run-DMC perform ‘It’s Like That.’”

The rapper continued: “Right then and there I was like, ‘I want to do that. I got to do that right there.’ That was the first day right there. I’ll never forget, man, ’cause that performance of ‘It’s Like That’ on Krush Groove still to this day gives me goose bumps so.”

NEW TWIST TURNS UP IN NOTORIOUS B.I.G. WRONGFUL DEATH CASE

The family of the late Notorious B.I.G. is gearing up for the second trial in their wrongful death lawsuit against the Los Angeles Police Department. The first trial ended in a mistrial and the family was awarded $1.1 million in legal fees. SOHH.com reports that just weeks before the second trial is set to begin, LAPD Sgt. Ya-May Christle has publicly stated that data she entered in reference to the case was destroyed.

The allegations are included in Christle’s sexual harassment lawsuit against the Los Angeles Police Department and Michael Berkow, former LAPD deputy chief in charge of internal affairs. According to Christle, Berkow gave preferential treatment and promotions to several female officers in exchange for sex. Additionally, Christle alleges that computer data she entered while investigating the murder of the Notorious B.I.G. was destroyed. Once Christle accused Berkow and others of confiscation her computer, she was retaliated against. The computer allegedly contained information critical to the internal affairs investigation of the Wallace murder.

The presence of an internal affairs investigation into the case lends some credence to the Wallace family argument that two rogue officers were involved in the March 1997 murder.

Christle’s lawyer, Bradley Gage, is also part of the Wallace family’s legal team. Gage would not reveal the exact details of what was contained on the confiscated computer.

Last July, the Los Angeles Police Department formed a new task force to investigate the Notorious B.I.G. murder.

DIGGIN IN THE CRATES WORKING ON NEW ALBUM

The Diggin In The Crates crew made a name for themselves in the mid-’90s as solo artists and through group projects. The collective released a self-titled album on Tommy Boy Records in 2000 but now they’re back together and working on a new album. Allhiphop.com reports that group, which consists of Fat Joe, OC, Showbiz, AG, Diamond D, Lord Finesse, the late Big L, and Buckwild, will be releasing some new material this year.

In addition to the group project, producer Diamond D is working on a new solo album that will feature guest appearances by Sy Scott, the Beatnuts, and Q-Tip.

Diamond D was recently nominated for a Grammy Award for producing the hit single “Day Dreamin’” for Natalie Cole. The song was included on Cole’s 2006 jazz release, Leavin’.

Diamond, who won a Grammy in 1996 for his work on the Fugees’ Score album, said, “I’m glad just to be a part of this whole thing for Natalie. Dallas Austin was working with her. He asked for me to come through and play some joints for Natalie. She picked about four joints from me, but one she really, really liked. That’s the one that wound up being used for ‘Day Dreaming.’”

PASTOR TROY ARRESTED AFTER RADIO INTERVIEW

Atlanta-based rapper Pastor Troy was arrested early Friday morning, December 15th, after completing a radio interview on Atlanta’s Hot 107.9. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that while the rapper was on-air, the police received a tip that he had an outstanding warrant in Fayette County. After confirming that there was a warrant, officers arrested Troy, whose real name is Micah Lever Troy, outside the radio station at 9 a.m.

The 29 year-old rapper is on probation for driving without insurance and with a suspended license.

Troy’s last release was By Choice Or By Force, which he released in July on Koch Records.

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE TO PERFORM WITH ‘MY GRAMMY MOMENT’ WINNER

Aspiring singers have a chance to earn a performance slot on the upcoming Grammy Awards telecast alongside Grammy nominee Justin Timberlake. The Recording Academy, the organization that hands out the Grammys, has just announced the My Grammy Moment program, its own American Idol-like competition that will put a lucky unsigned artist in the spotlight during the 49th annual Grammy Awards show, being presented February 11th at Staples Center in Los Angeles. The top three finalists will be chose by fans online at Yahoo! Music.

Singers who are at least 18 years old and are U.S. residents can enter by submitting a 60-second video of themselves performing a cappella — with no musical background — one of the following Grammy winning songs: Alicia Keys’ “If I Ain’t Got You,” Faith Hill’s “Breathe,” Melissa Etheridge’s “Come To My Window,” Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got To Do With It,” Luther Vandross’ “Dance With My Father,” Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me A River,” Aretha Franklin’s “Respect,” Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” or Mariah Carey’s “Vision Of Love.”

“I’m happy to participate in this unique approach to discovering unsigned talent, but I’m only a piece of the puzzle,” said Timberlake in a statement. “All of you contestants out there should look at this as more than just a chance to duet with me, because it’s really an opportunity to begin your career as a superstar. And I’ll be there to help coach you along.”

The contest began Friday, December 15th. Contestants have until January 3rd to submit and upload their entry video to music.yahoo.com/mygrammymoment/rules.asp . They will be judged by a Blue Ribbon committee of singers, songwriters, producers and industry executives.

Fans and viewers can begin viewing video submissions online at CBS.com beginning December 18th. The top 12 artists will be announced January 8th, when viewers and fans can vote for their favorites online. The top five will be announced January 16th, with voting to continue. The top three will be announced during Super Bowl Weekend, and they will each rehearse with Timberlake leading up to the Grammys.

Viewers will vote for the final performer during the actual Grammy telecast, with the winner announced moments before joining Timberlake on stage for their Grammy performance.

GNARLS BARKLEY’S ‘CRAZY’ TOPS ROLLING STONE’S FAVORITE SONGS LIST

Gnarls Barkley’s summer smash “Crazy” has been named the Best Song of the Year by Rolling Stone in the magazine’s list of the best 100 tracks of 2006. The magazine wrote, “(Gnarls members) Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse stepped up with an instant classic, winning this year’s ‘Hey Ya!’ award for the song nobody even pretended not to like. Everybody tried to cover it…but nobody can hit the chorus like Cee-Lo, and nobody ever will.” Cee- Lo told me that the track struck him the first time he heard it: “I found the track — Danger usually, you know, plays me 15 to 20 different things and I may like six and may love three, you know what I mean? So this was one I definitely fell in love with immediately.”

Placing in the Top Ten are Chamillionaire’s “Ridin’” at Number Three and T.I.’s “What You Know” at Number Four. Gnarls Barkley appears again on the list at Number 29 with “Smiley Faces.”

Other urban pop and hip-hop tracks placing on the top 100 list include Cham’s “Ghetto Story” at Number 14; Justin Timberlake with both “Sexyback” at Number 21 and “My Love” at Number 50; and Cherish with “Do It To It” at Number 32.

INSURANCE COMPANY SAYS IT’S NOT LIABLE IN $10 MILLION DOLLAR LAWSUT AGAINST 50 CENT

An insurance company claims it is not liable for a $10 million lawsuit against 50 Cent, claiming the rapper took more than a year to report the assault of Richard “DJ Xzulu The Big Lipped Bandit” Dunkerson at 93.9 WKYS-FM in Lanham, Maryland. According to The New York Post, National Fire claims 50 Cent, born Curtis Jackson, waited more than 12 months to report the assault, which effectively nullified the rapper’s coverage. The lawsuit was filed after former G- Unit member The Game and an entourage appeared on Xzulu’s show in Jan. of 2005, weeks before the release of his chart-topping G- Unit/Aftermath debut The Documentary hit stores. During the interview, Xzulu allegedly made an off- color remark about a cell-phone ear piece being worn by The Game’s manager, Jimmy “Henchmen” Rosemond. Shortly after the interview was over, police said a group of men confronted the DJ and punched and kicked Xzulu, causing serious internal injuries. In April 2005, another man named Kwasi Jones came forward and claimed that he was beat by the pack of men the same evening as well. Jones filed a $280 million dollar civil-assault case against The Game, G-Unit, Shady Records, and Aftermath Entertainment.

WILL.I.AM SAYS HIS MUSICAL DIVERSITY CAME FROM HIP-HOP

Will.I.Am, the hip-hop powerhouse behind the sound of the Black Eyed Peas and several other pop, jazz, and rap success stories, says that he likes to create music from scratch rather than sample to capture a unique sound in the studio.

Nominated for production, performance, and songwriting Grammys this year for his work with the Peas, front woman Fergie, and Sergio Mendes’ all-star Timeless album, Will.I.Am says he learned how to capture a mood from studying how recordings were done in the ’60s and ’70s.

Commenting on his musical diversity, he told me: “Just being brought up and raised by hip-hop, that spectrum is a natural thing. It’s just that a lot of producers stop and just sample. I’m not saying — there’s nothing wrong with sampling, but if you can recreate it, that’s even greater. If you can create songs that feel like the thing that you were sampling from the 60s and the 70s, you mike the instrument and give the right room and figure out what kind of mikes they used. They’re all just like two mikes. Nowadays they got like a billion mikes on a drum kit.”

JOE DELIVERS NEW ‘WHERE YOU AT?’ SINGLE

R&B singer and songwriter Joe has been missing in action since 2003’s album And Then …, which featured the singles “More And More” and “Ride Wit U.” But in 2007, he roars back into action with the release of the single “Where You At?” featuring Papoose.

A video for the dramatic love song is already gaining spins at TV outlets, and can be viewed at Yahoo Music.

The tune is a preview to his upcoming Jive/Zomba album, which will feature guest appearances by Nas, Chamillionaire, Fabolous, and Young Buck, with the production of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Brian Michael Cox, Sean Garrett, Cool & Dre, and Tim & Bob. The title of the album has not been announced.

CHURCH RAP VIDEO STIRRING CONTROVERSY

The Ridge Stone Church in Canton, Ohio decided on a new way to get the message out about their Christmas Eve services. The video, they say was meant in good natured holiday spirit, but the YouTube community as always has their own views on it.

The pastor and members of Ridge Stone Church cut the video to alert members that Christmas Eve services will actually be on Sunday morning, not Sunday evening. The church meets in a movie theater and it will be unavailable on Christmas Eve. So Pastor Gary Lamb donned a “pimped” out Santa outfit, started rapping and put the whole thing on video. He’s joined by a crew of elves you wouldn’t see in any other rap video.

Lamb loaded the video onto YouTube.com and it began to spread like wildfire. But not all the response has been positive. Some internet viewers think the video is racist. Others say it just isn’t in the holiday spirit.

STEVE HARVEY ON TOM JOYNER ABSENCE IN L.A

Steve Harvey, host of the Premiere Radio Network’s syndicated Steve Harvey Morning Show, spoke to EUR’s Lee Bailey over the weekend about the removal of The Tom Joyner Morning Show from Los Angeles radio station KKBT-FM (100.3 The Beat).

That’s really sad. That’s really a sad thing that’s happened over there to The Beat,” says Harvey, who hosted mornings at the Radio One station from 2000 to 2005 before leaving and eventually being replaced by Joyner. Harvey parted ways with Radio One after attempts to syndicate his program nationwide fell short of expectations. Radio One soon partnered with Harvey’s main competitor Joyner to syndicate the Tom Joyner Morning Show on KKBT - until news last week that Joyner’s program would be dropped in yet another format change at the station.

“I don’t gloat and revel in stuff like that,” Harvey continues. “It’s just really sad what has happened to that station. The Beat was once a heritage station, and for it to be happening like this right now, it’s a sad day. I wish [Radio One CEO and Owner] Alfred Liggins and Cathy Hughes the absolute best and I hope they can turn that situation around. They’re a black-owned business and I always want that to be a success for them. I would’ve loved to have remained a part of [Radio One] because we had plans of growing it in a great way,” Harvey added. “But it wasn’t in everybody’s plan. So now we’re on our own and doing it differently. But we’re not gloating. We’re surprised at it.”

ROSARIO DAWSON’S DATE RAPE FILM TO HIT THEATERS

Rosario Dawson, last seen starring in Clerks II and the big screen adaptation of Broadway’s Rent, is producing and starring in a violent date-rate drama that has just been acquired by City Lights Pictures for domestic release in the spring. Titled Descent, the actress plays a college student slowly recovering from a brutal date rape. While trying to rebuild her life, she decides to take revenge on her attacker (Chad Faust) in a manner described as “equally shocking, controversial and graphic” by City Lights CEO Danny Fisher, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Fisher said he was ready to distribute the film unrated or with a commercially damaging NC-17 rating because he was unwilling to make edits that would diminish the power of the material. “This is not a revenge thriller, and we’re not planning to market it as such,” Fisher told the Hollywood Reporter. He plans to network with rape and women’s organizations to spread awareness of the film’s subject matter, and launch a strong Internet campaign, including a presence in online support groups. The script for Descent was written especially for Dawson by its director Talia Lugacy, a longtime friend of the New York actress. Two of Dawson’s Rent co-stars, Tracie Thoms and Wilson Jermaine Heredia, appear in supporting roles.

OPRAH WINFREY PACTS WITH ABC FOR TWO REALITY SHOWS

Oprah Winfrey is further expanding her media reach. Her Harpo Productions company has pacted with ABC Networks to develop two prime-time reality shows, tentatively titled Oprah Winfrey’s The Big Give and Your Money Or Your Life. The deal with the network was struck just three months after Harpo developed a new TV development division for alternative programming.

In The Big Give, 10 people would receive money and other resources in a challenge to help others in a way that tests their ingenuity and passion. The winner gets to realize their “wildest” dream, a concept Winfrey first developed on her popular daily talk show.

Your Money or Your Life, currently in development, features families who are confronted by a crisis and must change or risk being “consumed by disaster,” according to the ABC-Harpo announcement, released Friday.

No air dates have yet been announced for either project.

BREAST CANCER FIGURES DOWN AFTER WOMEN SPURN HORMONE THERAPY

A new federal study of U.S. breast cancer rates found that the figure fell more than 7 percent in 2003, and that the reason is due to less hormone use. “It’s a big deal … amazing, really,” said Dr. Rowan Chlebowski, of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, who helped research the study. “It’s better than a cure,” he told AP, because these are cases that never occurred.

The study showed that about 14,000 fewer women were diagnosed with the disease than had been expected. The results were presented by researchers last Thursday at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium in Texas.

Doctors noted that the biggest decline was among women aged 50 and older, a group most likely to take hormone replacement therapy to stave off the effects of menopause. The decline was biggest for tumors whose growth is fueled by estrogen, the type most affected by hormone use.

New warning labels appeared on estrogen-progestin drugs in 2002, after they were found to lead to a higher incidence of breast cancer and heart problems. Doctors also urged women to use the lowest dose for short periods to relieve hot flashes and other menopause symptoms. Consequently, the number of prescriptions for the hormones fell by 50 percent, from about 22 million each quarter to just 12.7 million in the last quarter of 2003.

Breast cancer is the most common major cancer in American women and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women. About 213,000 new cases are expected to occur in the United States this year. While black women have a lower incidence of breast cancer than white women, scientists have found that black women who develop the disease are more likely to die from it than their white counterparts.

MUHAMMAD ALI, THE FIRST RAPPER?

A new book on the verbal prowess of Muhammad Ali, titled Ali Rap: Muhammad Ali the First Heavyweight Champion of Rap, contains nearly 300 pages of quotes from the boxer, compiled by editor, George Lois.

Lois told the Associated Press he has always wanted to condense Ali’s many sayings and memorable utterances into a “small, fat book - like a Bible or a Quran.” Presented chronologically, Ali Rap takes the reader from the boxer’s Kentucky childhood, through his historic fights against Sonny Liston, Joe Lewis and George Foreman - and finally to his current struggles with Parkinson’s disease.

Chuck D of the rap group Public Enemy recently hosted an Ali Rap special on ESPN, which also included Rakim, Ludacris, Doug E. Fresh, Fab 5 Freddy, Jermaine Dupri and MC Lyte. “He was able to engage his social surroundings into his whole persona. That’s what hip-hop was able to do - to be an antenna for social reflection,” Chuck told AP. “He’s one of the few black people to get on TV in the ’60s and speak their minds - thank God - and also back up what he talked about.”

KATT WILLIAMS GETS THREE YEARS PROBATION

Comedian and aspiring rapper Katt Williams almost blew his gig hosting the BET Awards last month when he was arrested just days before the show, on November 6th, when police found a gun in his luggage at Los Angeles International Airport. SOHH.com reports that Williams pleaded no contest to the misdemeanor charge of carrying a concealed weapon and was sentenced to three years probation and time served.

Williams, who spent three days behind bars after the arrest, was also charged with other undisclosed offenses and ordered to pay restitution. According to Jane Robinson, a spokesperson for the district attorney’s office, the case has been resolved.

Williams is still facing weapons charges in Michigan for the two taser guns that were discovered in his checked luggage as he left an airport in Kalamazoo in 2005. Authorities are still trying to decide whether to charge him with a felony.

The comedian is currently working on his debut rap album and a new stand-up DVD. The rap album will be released through Cam’ron’s Diplomat Records next year.
