JOHN LEGEND TO APPEAR ON ALICIA KEYS’ NEW SET

Singer John Legend is one of the artists slated to appear on the forthcoming studio album by Alicia Keys, according to MTV.com. No word yet on what songs the two will work on together.

Meanwhile, Legend continues his international tour to promote his sophomore set, Once Again. He also recently received three NAACP Image Award nominations for Outstanding Male Artist, Outstanding Album, and Outstanding Song for the single “Save Room.”

The song contains a sample of the ’60s tune “Stormy,” whose writers have been compensated. But Legend explained that when he initially worked on “Save Room” with producer Will.I.Am, he wasn’t aware of where the musical sample had come from: “When I was with Will.I.Am, we did six songs in six days that week, and ‘Save Room’ was the first one that we did. It started with a beat and the sample that Will pulled from the old ‘Stormy’ song. I wasn’t aware of where he pulled it from when I was coming up with ideas for it lyrically, but eventually I found out later that that’s what it was from. I just thought the organ sound was cool, and it felt like the vibe of a song I would want to write to.”

KELLY ROWLAND SET TO RELEASE SECOND SOLO SET

Former Destiny’s Child singer Kelly Rowland has been busy putting the finishing touches on her sophomore solo set, due this spring. The album — originally titled My Story — was initially due last summer, but she decided to push back the set after getting some critical feedback. It was also likely that her management company, Music World Entertainment, rescheduled to avoid competing with former groupmate Beyonce ’s sophomore set B’Day, which was released last September.

Rowland’s follow-up to 2002’s Simply Deep is tentatively titled Miss Kelly, and will feature production by Rich Harrison, Sean Garrett, Polow Da Don, Tank, and others. The possible first single is a tune called “Woo (Bump Like This),” according to UrbanBridgez.com.

Rowland’s last album featured the singles “Dilemma” with Nelly, and “Stole.”

BRIAN McKNIGHT HAPPY TO FINALLY WORK WITH TIM & BOB

Singer and songwriter Brian McKnight continues to have two singles on the urban adult airplay chart this week, with his most recent, “Used To Be My Girl,” in third place. The tune is from his brand-new Warner Bros. album, Ten.

He also maintains a presence with the single “Find Myself In You,” from the Madea’s Family Reunion soundtrack. That tune turns up at Number Eight this week.

McKnight got help on the sultry “Used To Be My Girl” from production team Tim & Bob, whose credits include singles with Tamia, Sisqo, Lionel Richie, Joe, and many others. McKnight said he had known the duo for a while but only got to collaborate with them for this project: “Tim and Bob, we’ve known each other forever. This is the first opportunity we’ve had to work together. But they’re musicians, they get both sides of the fence, how to manipulate the computers stuff but to also play on top of the things to make it musical. We all grew up doing the same types of stuff, but when we got in the studio it was just natural for us to … I thought about doing it before just never had the opportunity.”

McKnight’s album most recently reached Number 25 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

TEMPTATIONS LEADER WOULDN’T MIND THE GROUP’S STORY ENDING UP ON BROADWAY

Otis Williams of the Temptations says that considering the recent success of Jersey Boys, the Broadway hit detailing the Four Seasons’ career, he’d be interested in a similar production about the Temps. Williams, who’s the sole surviving member from the group’s ’60s heyday, told the Honolulu Advertiser that, “I would definitely be agreeable if there were a show on our group; our life is just as interesting, and we also started out as a street-corner band.”

Williams explained the group’s NBC mini-series The Temptations, which was based on his 1998 autobiography, Temptation, has already earned the group a new legion of fans: “Everywhere we go, the people receive us well; they pass on (their support) to the family members, making it a shared thing. I think what has helped us is the miniseries we did that was shown over and over.”

The Temptations will next perform on February 17th in Providence, Rhode Island at the Providence Performing Arts Center.

GAME BEEFS WITH EVERYONE

Last week, one of the world’s most well known soccer players signed a contract to play for Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Galaxy. This was said to be a move that would further appreciation for soccer in the US.

According to various reports, The Game recently reacted to this by claiming he would “kick his ass.” Although he did admit Beckham was a “pretty good” player, he also claimed he would end the match quickly.

“I’d kick David Beckham’s ass on any given day. I’d just pick the ball up and kick the s*** out of the stadium, game over,” he reportedly said.

The Game is also facing heat from the WWE. According to ProWrestling.com, the rapper recently claimed he would be willing to fight wrestler Triple H over the rights to the name The Game. “The Game claims he has used the name longer; however Triple H has been associated with the name since the summer of 1999,” the site recently noted.

PAULA HAD TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY

By now you’ve seen the video of Paula Abdul’s wacky appearance on a Seattle morning news show (click here if you haven’t seen it) where she was promoting tomorrow’s premiere of American Idol.Paula’s reps chalked up her odd behavior to “technical problems.” Now Fox has issued a statement standing behind their Laker girl.

“All of us at Fox have tremendous respect and admiration for Paula Abdul,” the statement reads. “She is a consummate professional who always gives 100% to everything she does. Last week, during a satellite press tour there were intermittent technical difficulties, including severe audio issues in which multiple stations were speaking to her at once. Rather than getting angry about these difficulties, or stopping the tour, Paula forged ahead and decided to have fun with the increasingly challenging situation. Unfortunately, because reporters and viewers were unaware of the situation, her humor was misconstrued.”

IS WHITNEY HOUSTON “COUGARING” WITH BRANDY’S LITTLE BROTHER???

Crack may be wack but being a cougas is not. 43- year-old Whitney Houston was out Sunday night with Ray J. He’s Brandy’s 25 year old brother. (He turns 26 tomorrow.)

Nobody’s saying for sure that Whitney’s hittin’ that but she and Ray J got caught by the paparazzi steppin’ out to a place called Maestro’s in Beverly Hills. And in the pictures, they really don’t look like they wanted to be caught. Check ‘em out by clicking here

Meanwhile. . . Beyonce must not have gotten the memo that Whitney is on her way back UP. . . because in an interview with the not-always- reliable British tabloids, Beyoncé talked about how badly she feels for Whitney these days. She said, quote, “I once lined up for Whitney’s autograph when I was a kid. I had her photograph pinned up inside my wall and thought she was the very best around. I don’t want to talk about what’s happened to her since. I think it’s very easy to get yourself into trouble. We live an unrealistic life in a crazy world. The demands are huge and the fallout can be equally big. You can get swept along by events. It is very hard for a woman in the music business to maintain a long term career. There are demands you cannot even begin to imagine.”

THIS WEEK’S NEW RELEASES

I Love You, Diana Ross (A collection of covers: including Queen’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”, The Beatles’ “I Will”, and Harry Nilsson’s “Remember”.)

-The soundtrack to the upcoming Tyler Perry movie Daddy’s Little Girls (With music by:R. Kelly, Brian McKnight, Beyoncé, Jaheim, Chris Brown and the Houston family Whitney Houston, Cissy Houston and Dionne Warwick.)

Sick & Tired, Wanda Sykes (A stand-up comedy disc.)

Definitive Greatest Hits, Al Green

SIMON COWELL COULD’VE ENDED EDDIE MURPHY’S SINGING CAREER A WHILE BACK

With American Idol, Simon Cowell is now in the business of telling wannabe pop singers that they have no talent. But there was a time when he didn’t have the nerve to tell people that they were terrible. And one of those people was Eddie Murphy.

Simon says, quote, “Eddie was interested in making a record, so I flew to the east coast, to his huge house, and I was very intimidated. I thought it would be just the two of us and a hi-fi. But I ended up in a recording studio with about 20 nodders, a nodder is someone who gets paid to agree with the person paying him. Eddie started to play some songs, which I hated, and I just didn’t know what to say. Now I’d find it a lot easier. I would just say, ‘I hate it.’” Here’s Eddie Murphy’s , “Party All The Time”

GUNFIRE FOLLOWS FIGHT OVER JAMES BROWN’S HEIGHT

The children of James Brown are hoping to turn his home in Beech, S.C. into a museum a la Elvis Presley’s Graceland, while gunfire erupted between two friends in Atlanta over an argument about the Godfather of Soul’s height.

Brown’s children say they have spoken with several close friends and the singer’s trustees to open a museum for tourists at their father’s home, as well as a mausoleum to hold his body, said Debri Opri, an attorney for Brown. The group hopes to consult with the family of Elvis Presley to discuss how they developed Graceland, Opri said.

Meanwhile, in Atlanta, a dispute between two men over how tall Brown stood resulted in one of the men being shot twice and the other charged with assault. Dan Gulley Jr. was charged with allegedly shooting David James Brooks Jr. in the abdomen. Brooks was rushed to the hospital following the shootout, where his condition is not thought to be serious.

Gully, who reportedly confessed to the crime, is said to be in custody at Escambia County Jail.

James Brown, who died on Christmas Day of heart failure, was reportedly 5′6” tall, although he regularly wore heels.

ENTERTAINMENT QUICKIES

Former heavyweight boxing champion MIKE TYSON has been indicted for drug possession and driving under the influence of drugs by an Arizona grand jury, authorities said on Friday. The 40- year-old faces two counts each of felony drug possession and misdemeanor driving under the influence following a Dec. 29 arrest in Scottsdale, Arizona. As previously reported, Thomas wants prison time for the former boxer, who has a long record of legal troubles. If convicted, Tyson faces more than seven years behind bars.

New York Giants football player MICHAEL STRAHAN was ordered to pay $15.3 million to his ex-wife JEAN STRAHAN as part of their prenuptial agreement, reports AP. The agreement stated that Jean was entitled to half of their joint marital assets and 20 percent of his yearly income from each year they were married. MICHAEL STRAHAN claimed that he wasn’t responsible for the 20 percent because his wife failed to ask for it every year. State Superior Court Judge JAMES CONVERY disagreed, ruling that “the plaintiff is not credible in his claim that the defendant never asked for her separate funds.” In addition to the $15.3 million, Convery awarded JEAN STRAHAN hundreds of thousands of dollars in child support.

The wife of New Jersey Nets star JASON KIDD has filed a domestic-violence restraining order against her husband on the heels of his accusations that she had physically and emotionally abused him. “There was a lot, a lot of physical violence,” JOUMANA KIDD’S attorney, RAOUL FELDER, said in Saturday’s New York Post. On Monday night, police served JOUMANA KIDD with a restraining order obtained by her husband. On Tuesday, the 33-year-old NBA star filed for divorce from his wife of 10 years, citing “extreme cruelty” and saying that he was an abused spouse.

Here we go. O.J. SIMPSON now wants to write a “REAL” book about his life with ex-wife NICOLE BROWN SIMPSON. Earlier this week, O.J. claimed that the chapter in his never-published book, If I Did It, that dealt with the murders of Nicole and her friend RON GOLDMAN, was Ghost-written, and that he hated the idea of it being included in the book. O.J.’s attorney, YALE GALANTER, says this new book would not talk about the murders. Instead, it would be, quote, “basically a very descriptive compilation of his life with Nicole.” Galanter added that, above all, it would be tasteful. He says there’s tons of interest out there for this book.

Former NFL superstars JERRY RICE and EMMITT SMITH will be making separate guest-appearances on back-to-back CBS shows on February 5th. Emmitt will be on How I Met Your Mother and Jerry will be on The Class.
Interestingly enough, Jerry and Emmitt have both competed on Dancing with the Stars(on the second and third seasons, respectively.) But Dancing with the Stars airs on ABC so, it appears that CBS now wants a piece of them. (???)

And just for fun, here is COMMON performing his new song Play Your Cards Right on JAY LENO, with help from BILAL and JEREMY PIVEN (yes, ARI GOLD).

We recently heard that DENZEL WASHINGTON refused to make sweet, taboo interracial love to JULIA ROBERTS in The Pelican Brief, because he didn’t want to upset his black female fan base. Now, MSNBC says WILL SMITH had always wanted to do a romantic comedy with CAMERON DIAZ but he was afraid audiences wouldn’t accept it. So he never pursued the idea.

NEWS YOU CAN USE

For the first time in history, more American women are living without a husband than with one

Here’s some good news for all you single women out there who get daily piles of grief from your married friends: If you and all the other single ladies in America teamed up right now, you’d have the numbers to beat down those catty, cocky married skanks.

Because, for the first time in history, there are now more American women living without a husband than with one.

The New York Times analyzed census results from 2005, and founds that 51% of women are living without a spouse. That’s up from 49% in 2000 and 35% in 1950.

Totaled up, there are about 117.4 million American women who are old enough to legally be married. 59.9 million are single, legally separated, or not living with their husband; 57.5 million ARE living with their husband.

Black women are the most likely to be single only about 30% are living with a spouse. That’s compared to 49% of Hispanic women, 55% of white women and more than 60% of Asian women.

It’s different for men a larger share of men are married and living with their spouse, about 53%. How’s that possible??? Since women live longer, it’s more common for women to be widowed, and, therefore, living without their husband.

‘STOMP THE YARD’ KICKS ASIDE BOX OFFICE COMPETITION

More good news for the fraternity stepping film Stomp The Yard which landed at Number One at the box office this weekend, kicking aside previous three-week champ Night At The Museum. The dance-heavy drama earned $22 million since its Friday opening, according to distributor Columbia Pictures. Stomp The Yard cost about $14 million to make, said Columbia, which estimated that 65 percent of the audience was black, though the film played strongly among all demographics.

The film stars dancer-turned-actor Columbus Short and actress Meagan Good, with appearances by R&B stars Ne-Yo and Chris Brown.

Meanwhile, the Will Smith vehicle The Pursuit of Happyness slipped to Number Three this weekend, earning $9.1 million. The five-week total for the critically acclaimed Columbia release stands at $136.5 million.

The star-studded Dreamgirls climbed back up to Number Four this weekend, jumping over the South Central-set drama Freedom Writers. Both are Paramount releases.
‘AMERICAN IDOL’ KICKS OFF TONIGHT WITH AUDITION ROUNDS

The sixth season of American Idol kicks off tonight (January 16th) at 8 on Fox with two hours of the show’s popular audition phase. Wannabes from all over the country descended on Los Angeles, San Antonio, Birmingham, Memphis, New York City, Minneapolis, and Seattle for their shot at Idol stardom and, as usual, the results were good, bad, and very bad.

The Minneapolis auditions are first up, and in this clip from the season opener, a woman named Brenna isn’t happy with what Simon Cowell has to say about her performance: (Simon Cowell) “Brenna, I don’t want to hear anything more from you.” (Brenna) “Why?” (Cowell) “Because I just hated the audition.” (Brenna) “Why?” (Cowell) “Because it’s pointless. You’re not going to go through to the next round.” (Brenna) “I don’t understand why you won’t give me a chance…” (Cowell) “I’ll tell you why, ’cause I just heard you sing.” (Brenna) “But I have 10 years of training so I don’t understand why they didn’t tell me 10 years ago that it wasn’t good.” (Paula Abdul) “Somebody took your money.” (Cowell) “I’ll tell you why Brenna, because I wasn’t your teacher.”

Another would-be Idol, Jesse, takes the judges’ criticism even more personally, and rants about the ineptitude of Simon and company: (Jesse) “He don’t know what it’s like to be nervous in front of somebody so he’s right there running his mouth, not giving nobody the utmost respect that they deserve with singing. Randy’s up there laughing – - he needs to wipe up off the damn make-up he got on his face. When’s the last time Paula made a record? When’s the last time you seen her dancing around somewhere? They’re going to tell somebody you can’t sing. They made me upset, and I think justice needs to be served. Why don’t they go out there and they stand and audition for somebody and tell them how they sing?”

Part Two of the Idol season opener airs Wednesday (January 17th) at 8.

Ryan Seacrest returns as host, as do judges Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson.

American Idol’s Tuesday night and Wednesday night editions were the most watched television programs in all of 2006.
