‘IDOL’ FINALE NOT AS POPULAR AS EXPECTED

american-idol-logo.jpg

Fewer people watched Wednesday night’s (May 23rd) American Idol finale than last year’s season closer.

Preliminary ratings indicated that an estimated 30.7 million viewers tuned in to catch Jordin Sparks win the title from Blake Lewis, versus the 36 million that watched Taylor Hicks beat Katharine McPhee in Season Five. While that’s a significant drop, the ratings are still enormous — the Number Two show of the night, Lost, attracted just 12 million viewers.

Sparks was the favorite going into the finale, with everyone from Simon Cowell to Las Vegas oddsmakers to her competition rooting for the 17-year- old singer. Runner-up Blake Lewis told reporters after the finale, “I picked Jordin Sparks at the Top 24 as the American Idol winner.” Lewis added that he had planned on wearing a ‘Vote For Jordin Sparks T- Shirt’ on Tuesday night’s (May 22nd) performance episode but Fox wouldn’t let him do it.

The youngest Idol winner ever, Sparks has watched the show since she was 12 and told her mom early on that she wanted to compete in the contest.

Jordin Sparks thanks fans for their support: “That you guys so much. I love you. You’ve been such a great group, you’ve been so encouraging. Thank you so much for everything you’ve done for me and thank you for, you know, just encouraging me when I needed it.”

Jordin Sparks’ mother on her daughter’s win: “I was just in shock. I don’t even remember what I did. I think I screamed and jumped up and down and cried, and it’s just a whole mixture of emotions.”

ISAIAH WASHINGTON’S PRO-TOLERANCE PSA HITS SCREENS

isaiah-washington.jpg

Isaiah Washington’s penance for gay-bashing his Grey’s Anatomy co-star T.R. Knight included rehab, anger management, and recording a public service announcement (PSA). The PSA is now hitting television and the Internet, and it’s designed to combat intolerance based on sexual orientation, race, and gender. The spot stresses the importance of words, which in Washington’s case got him into trouble on the Grey’s Anatomy set and backstage at the Golden Globe awards.

Washington says in the message, “Words have power. When you use words that demean a person because of their sexual orientation, race or gender, you send a message of hate. We have the power to heal and change the world by the words we use.”

Previews of the ad peppered the Internet earlier in the week, and its official debut was during Grey’s Anatomy last night (May 24th).

In related news, the fates of Washington and Knight’s characters on Grey’s Anatomy were left up in the air on the show’s season finale. Washington’s character backed out of his wedding to Sandra Oh’s Dr. Yang and cleaned his stuff out of their apartment. Knight’s character George failed his year-end exam and emptied his hospital locker at show’s end.

Reps for both actors say they expect their clients to return to the Grey’s fold in the new season, but they have not received official word yet from ABC.

BOBBY BROWN HAS NEW/OLD WOMAN

Gossip maven CJ at the Star Tribune in Minneapolis is reporting that Bobby Brown has a new lady in his life.

Music executive Alicia Etheridge has reportedly been friendly with Bobby’s ex-wife Whitney Houston for the past twelve years – that is, until she started dating Bobby B, CJ notes. Word has it that Brown and Etheridge are now shacking up.

CJ said Etheridge recently introduced herself as Bobby’s “manager.” The couple, according to columnist Janet Charlton, dined together at The Palm restaurant in West Hollywood Wednesday night.

According to a witness “He made a big deal out of introducing Alicia as his ‘girlfriend’ to the host, the bartender, and everyone he knew in the restaurant. He also introduced her to photographers outside. He acted very proud of her.”

MICHAEL JACKSON ISN’T BROKE

Despite a stagnant recording career and messy legal situations, Michael Jackson is managing to make a good living. The so-called King of Pop is being paid $10 million to appear — not sing — this weekend at a birthday party for the prince of Brunei. Prince Azim is spending $14 million on his 25th birthday bash, and was sparing no cost to get his all- time idol, Jackson, to attend and mingle with his friends. Big names on the guest list include Pamela Anderson, Naomi Campbell, Jerry Hall, Faye Dunaway, and Kate Moss, who will simply receive party favors of diamonds and electronics for showing up. Britain’s London Mirror also reports the prince will have Dionne Warwick singing at the fete, for the bargain price of $500,000.
