CHARGES CONSIDERED AGAINST AKON FOR THROWING FAN

After throwing a 15-year-old fan from the stage last Sunday (June 3rd), Akon is drawing attention from Fishkill, New York police, who are considering whether any charges will be filed. The incident occurred after a male teenager was identified by the audience as having thrown what looked like a pretzel at the stage, and Akon invited him up onstage, only to then hoist him on his shoulders and throw him off into the crowd. In the footage, captured by a cell phone, Akon then said, “Now we can start the show, y’all ready,” adding, “He’s okay, he’s all right.” When the audience didn’t rally, he said, “See, now you got me feeling by myself. I thought I had fans and support.”

The boy’s mother contacted authorities, but has not filed any criminal charges against the singer. The boy was uninjured and refused medical treatment, leaving right after the incident. However, audience member Abby Rosa suffered a concussion when the boy landed on her. She has reportedly hired a lawyer and spoken to police, and now wants an apology from Akon.

Verizon withdrew its sponsorship of Akon’s tour with Gwen Stefani after a video footage surfaced of an April concert in Trinidad, during which the 34-year-old singer simulated sex with what turned out to be a 14-year-old girl on stage. Akon later apologized, saying he didn’t know that the girl — who turned out to be a pastor’s daughter — was underage. His current album, Konvicted, has sold more than 1 million copies in the U.S.

NOT IN MY FAMILY: AIDS IN THE AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY
Noted Journalist/Author Arrive In Minneapolis for discussion on the HIV/AIDS Epidemic in the Black Community

Minneapolis – The state of HIV/AIDS in Minnesota will be discussed this week when journalist, Gil Robertson IV arrives in town to present a community workshop based on his bestselling book, “Not in My Family: AIDS in the African American Community,”. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, June 19, 2007, Reception at 5 p.m., Program at 6 p.m. at Sabathani Community Center, 310 E 38th St, Minneapolis. Following Mr. Robertson’s presentation, a panel discussion of Twin Cities community leaders and professionals will focus on the impact of HIV in Minnesota’s African-American community; available programs and resources in HIV prevention, treatment, and advocacy; as well as barriers that prevent many African Americans from utilizing them. There will also be ample opportunity for questions from audience members.

Historically, about 90% of new HIV infections diagnosed in Minnesota have occurred in Minneapolis, St. Paul and the surrounding seven-county metropolitan area, according to the Minnesota Dept. of Health 2006 Survillence Report on HIV/AIDS. The most recent data illustrate that men and women of color continue to be disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS.

Edited by Robertson, this landmark collection of 58 personal essays, stories, brief memoirs and polemics from a broad swath of black Americans—whether prominent figures from the worlds of politics, entertainment, or sports, or just ordinary folks with extraordinary -stories whose lives have been touched by HIV/AIDS. Nominated for a NAACP Image Award and a featured title with the US Department of Health and Human Services, Not in My Family features essays from Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., former US Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders, Al Sharpton, Patti LaBelle, Mo’Nique, Jasmine Guy, Hill Harper, and Sheryl Lee Ralph, Randall Robinson, Omar Tyree and others.

MICHAEL JACKSON TO PERFORM ON CHRIS BROWN TRACK?

R&B singer Chris Brown wore a sparkly white glove and red jacket similar during his set at Hot 97’s Summer Jam on Sunday (June 3rd), in homage to Michael Jackson, but his dreams to work with his idol may soon become reality. The 18-year-old singer now hopes to get Jackson to sing on a Will.i.am-produced track on his second album, Exclusive, which is scheduled to hit stores on August 28th.

Brown told MTV.com, “He called me for my birthday, and I told him we should do a song. He was way up for it… Man, it was crazy. He actually spoke to me like a regular person, and he was like, ‘I like your music.’ He said his favorite song was ‘Shorty Like Mine’ that me and Bow Wow did. I appreciated talking to him.”

There are some definite collaborations on the album, however, including Mary Mary, Bryan-Michael Cox, Tank and T-Pain. Brown hopes the album will reveal a more mature voice, and for inspiration he’s listened to lots of gospel, including the Clark Sisters, Kiki Sheard, and Kim Burrell. “The freedom making this album is just me being able to write a lot more,” he said. “I wrote almost every song. I think I’m writing about the same topics (as the last album), but just a little older. I’m not leaving my kid audience, but I’m being who I am and just going in and having fun.”

Brown added, “I’m trying to be the R&B Tupac. I’m trying to make as many records as I can so when I’m out of this world, y’all can still have music from me nobody has heard yet.”

RIHANNA, ROBIN THICKE APPEAR ON NETWORK MORNING SHOW

Rihanna performed Friday (June 8th) on NBC’s Today Show, live from New York City. They performed at Rockefeller Center.
At the same time, R&B star Robin Thicke, performed on the Good Morning America Summer Concert Series, in Bryant Park in midtown Manhattan. Robin Thicke is the son of Canadian actor Alan Thicke and soap actress and singer Gloria Loring. He says their musical interests, combined with his love for hip-hop, gave him his musical sensibility: “My dad listens to mostly rock n roll which I’m a huge rock n roll fan, I just happen to love singing soulfully, and my mom would listen to soul singers in the house because my mom is a singer, so she’d listen to singers. And I’m listening to hip-hop, so somewhere in between you know I ended up somewhere in the middle of all three of those.”

ISAIAH WASHINGTON WILL NOT RETURN TO ‘GREY’S ANATOMY’ THIS FALL

Actor Isaiah Washington will not be returning to Grey’s Anatomy this fall, ABC News reports. One source who confirmed that his contract was not being renewed said, “It was a difficult year and this should come as no surprise to anyone.”

ABC Television has not made any comment. Washington’s agent had recently said he expected him to be back this fall.

Washington has been in hot water ever since calling co-star T.R. Knight a derogatory term for gay men last year and bringing up the slur again at the Golden Globe awards in January. He has since apologized and entered counseling, and has recently taped a public service announcement designed to combat intolerance based on sexual orientation, race, and gender, which has aired during Grey’s Anatomy and elsewhere.

The fates of Washington and Knight’s characters on Grey’s Anatomy were left up in the air on the show’s season finale. Washington’s character backed out of his wedding to Sandra Oh’s Dr. Yang, and cleaned his stuff out of their apartment. Knight’s character George failed his year-end exam and emptied his hospital locker at show’s end.

DR. IAN SMITH HAS ‘FAITH’ IN NEW SHOW

Dr. Ian Smith, best known for his health advice to celebrity fatties on MTV’s Celebrity Fit Club, is now hosting the second season of BET’s Meet The Faith. The season’s premiere episode runs this Sunday (June 10th) at 11 a.m. in a newly expanded one-hour format. The episode deals with African American perceptions of beauty and will feature broadcast personality Wendy Williams.

Dr. Smith told us that the expanded show will deal with issues of interest to the African American audience: “It’s the second season of the show, it used to be a half hour last season , we’ve now moved it to an hour. It’s my first season of hosting the show. And the show basically is about our issues, African American issues, and it’s about provocative, intelligent conversation — and debate — but also engaging and entertaining.”

Dr. Smith is the author of The Fat Smash Diet, a 90-day program that focuses on “smashing” bad eating and exercise habits and replacing them with new ones.
