STEVE HARVEY GETTING MARRIED FOR THIRD TIME

Comedian Steve Harvey has asked Marjorie Bridges to marry him, according to Essence.com, although the King of Comedy’s publicist has not yet issued a statement. The newly engaged couple were together at the Harlem reception for Eddie Levert’s book I Got Your Back: A Father And Son Keep It Real About Love, Fatherhood, Family And Friendship, and Harvey introduced Bridges — who was wearing a hefty canary yellow marquis diamond — as his fiancee. Harvey’s previous marriage lasted a decade, ending in a divorce that was finalized in 2005. He has one child from that marriage. He also has three children from his first marriage.

HUGE RATINGS FOR HOUSE OF PAYNE

The premiere of Tyler Perry’s new TV series “House of Payne” on Wednesday wreaked havoc by becoming TBS’ highest-rated sitcom of all time among key adult demos and viewers, as well as basic cable’s No. 1 scripted series telecast for the year-to-date among 18-49 and 25-54. After the final number crunching on Friday, it was announced that the series’ second episode has become basic cable’s No. 1 sitcom telecast of all time. “We weren’t expecting the best of all time,” said Turner Entertainment Networks president Steve Koonin. “We had high hopes, but even our highest hopes were exceeded.” Despite harsh criticism by critics, (Variety wrote: “How he got the cabler to pony up for 100 episodes of such an uncharacteristically unfunny sitcom as ‘House of Payne’ is worthy of a sitcom on its own), viewers turned out in droves to support the two-part premiere from 9-10 p.m., with an average of 5.2 million total viewers tuning in to the 9 p.m. episode and 5.8 million watching at 9:30 p.m., according to Nielsen Media Research. That’s good enough to give the 9:30 p.m. episode the ranking as basic cable’s most-watched sitcom telecast ever. Over the hour, “Payne” even trumped broadcast competition in its 9-10 timeslot, outperforming a new episode of the CW Network’s “One Tree Hill” (2.2 million viewers). Created, directed and produced by Perry, “Payne” revolves around the lives of three generations of a black family living under one roof. Allen Payne stars as a fireman who is forced to move in with his parents, played by LaVan Davis and Cassi Davis, when his crack-addled wife burns down the house. (At least this was where the storyline headed during an initial run of shows last summer.) Although Perry made an appearance in Wednesday’s premiere episode as his alter ego Madea, the filmmaker says the character’s appearance on future episodes will be few and far between.

BIG DAY FOR PUERTO RICANS IN NEW YORK

Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez caused a frenzy when they showed up at the annual New York City Puerto Rican Day parade last year, and AOL reports that the stars, both of Puerto Rican descent, will likely turn up at this year’s parade, set for Sunday (June 10th). Anthony is public about his admiration for the event: “The Puerto Rican Day parade has been a long-standing tradition in my life. It was always an event that I looked forward to every single year.”

JERMAINE DUPRI SURVIVES ACCIDENT

Island Records executive and producer Jermaine Dupri was involved in an accident early Thursday morning (June 7th). The producer’s Cadillac Escalade was hit by a vehicle just after midnight at the intersection of 49th Street and Park Avenue in New York City. Allhiphop.com reports that a woman plowed into Dupri’s vehicle after running a stoplight. The producer wasn’t injured but his driver was taken to the hospital and treated for a broken arm. Dupri’s SUV was totaled. In related news, Dupri plans to open his new nightclub, Club 72, in Atlanta on June 16th. He allegedly invested over $1 million to renovate the club which is being billed as a “modern day Studio 54.”
