Hip hop mogul Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter earned approximately $83 million last year to land just ahead of Steven Spielberg on the Forbes Celebrity 100. The list was topped by Oprah Winfrey who earned $260 million last year. The Top Ten was rounded out by Tiger Woods at Number Two with $100 million, Madonna at Number Three with $72 million, Rolling Stones at Number Four with $88 million, Brad Pitt at Number Five with $35 million, Johnny Depp at Number Six with $92 million, Elton John at Number Seven with $53 million, Tom Cruise at Number Eight with $31 million and Steven Spielberg at Number Ten with $110 million.

Some of the other rappers who made the list include: 50 Cent at Number 31 with $33 million, Sean “Diddy” Combs at Number 43 with $23 million, and Will Smith at Number 57 with $31 million.

In addition to earnings, the stars were ranked on television, press, and web impressions.

Next year, 50 Cent is expected to make a run for the Top Ten next year after Coca Cola purchased Glaceau for $4.3 billion last month. The star owns a small stake in the company which could have earned him $100 million off of the sale.

Jay-Z’s earning were based on deals with Coca Cola and General Motors. The rapper also sold his stake in Rocawear to Iconix last

year.

MO’NIQUE READY TO HOST THE ‘07 BET AWARDS
mo-nique.jpg

Actress and comedienne Mo’Nique is set to return as the host of this year’s BET Awards, Black Entertainment Television’s celebration of film, music, and sports. When the plus- size diva and best-selling author hosted the 2004, she created one of the most outrageous moments on television with her opening number, in which she performed a song and dance parody of Beyonce’s “Crazy In Love.”

Since 2004, Mo’Nique has become a mother to twins, become a fixture on television’s Mo’Nique’s Fat Chance and Flavor Of Love Charm School, and appeared in films. Though she’s been busy, the wise-cracking star says she still plans to top herself with the opening for the ‘07 BET Awards, set for June 26th at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

“I can’t give it away,” Mo’Nique confided to journalists last week, adding that she did consult Regina Williams, the choreographer who crafted her eye-popping 2004 routine.

“But, I gotta keep my word to Beyonce, my sister friend, ’cause I told her when she came out and did ‘Deja Vu’ last year: ‘You trying my hand,’” she joked. “‘You trying my hand, Beyonce, and you gonna stop it now, I’m 40.’ But every time she dances, I’mma dance. I could be 63. If she dance to a number, baby, at 63. What! Pow. I might be 63, sitting in a chair doing like this . . . Pow. Pow. Pow. Yes, indeed.”

The ‘07 BET Awards will feature performances by Ciara, Ne-Yo, T.I., Yolanda Adams, and 50 Cent.

VIVICA A. FOX REGRETS D.U.I. ARREST

Actress Vivica A. Fox says she intensely regrets her March D.U.I. arrest, noting that she will never do it again. The 42-year-old star was pulled over on the Hollywood Freeway and charged with misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence and driving with a blood-alcohol level above the legal limit. “It was a huge learning lesson. I won’t ever make that mistake again,” Fox said. “Trust me, I’m going to hire a driver next time.”

Appearing backstage at the Daytime Emmy Awards at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles on Friday, Fox was contrite. “It was an unfortunate judgment that I am taking full responsibility in … It is so not worth what you go through for getting a D.U.I,” she said, adding that the arrest will stay on her record for 10 years.

Fox admitted that the experience did give her empathy for embattled celebutante Paris Hilton, currently serving jail time in Los Angeles for reckless driving. “We are not above the law,” Fox said about celebrities. “She’s going to get more coverage when her butt gets out of jail. It’s going to be a special alert and we all are going to watch, right?”

Fox was the star and a producer for the Lifetime series 1-800-Missing, and has appeared on the big screen in Kill Bill Vol. 1, Why Do Fools Fall In Love, and Soul Food among other films.

GERALD LEVERT TRIBUTE SET FOR ESSENCE FESTIVAL

The late Gerald Levert will be remembered with a special tribute at this year’s Essence Music Festival during July 4th weekend in New Orleans. Veteran group the O’Jays, featuring Gerald’s father Eddie Levert, will perform the tribute during their main stage set on July 5th.

Joining the O’Jays for the tribute will be Johnny Gill and Keith Sweat, who recorded two albums with Gerald as LSG. Also, Gerald’s younger brother Sean Levert will be featured to celebrate the work of their trio Levert, in which Gerald first came to fame with songs like “Casanova” and “Pop, Pop, Pop (Goes My Mind).”

Gerald Levert died in November 2006, shortly after returning from a 10-day trip to South Africa with The O’Jays.

Levert is featured on the brand-new CD Something To Talk About, a collection of duets with his father. “We still sound so much alike. It’s uncanny,” Eddie Levert told USA Today. “I listen to Something to Talk About, and there are points where I don’t know whether it’s me or him.” Gerald is also represented on the urban AC charts with two songs from his last solo CD, In My Songs: the title track and the up-tempo “DJ Don’t.”

JIMMY JAM WEIGHS IN ON MICHAEL JACKSON COMEBACK
michael-jackson.jpgjimmy-jam.jpg

Michael Jackson has reportedly been hard at work on a brand new album between travels to Dubai, Las Vegas, and spots in Europe. Fans and industry insiders are wondering whether Jackson’s new material will prove to be the kind of sales blockbuster he’s had in the past, like historic multi-platinum releases Off The Wall and Bad.

Producer Jimmy “Jam” Harris, who with partner Terry Lewis worked on all but two of Janet Jackson’s albums, also produced “Scream,” Janet’s 1995 duet with Michael.

Harris says that Jackson isn’t motivated by breaking sales records when he goes into the studio nowadays. He explained: “I don’t think a successful comeback should be based on statistics, I think making music will be the thing that makes him happy, you can’t put the cart before the horse. You can’t sell records until you make the songs. And I think for him, making the songs at this point is going to be the fun thing for him. And obviously the reward for him selling records is wonderful. I know for a fact, because I know him pretty well, that the statistics, he already has those, I mean, he’s got records that will never be broken again. And now in this point in his life it’s really about making great music. ” There is no word on when Jackson will release a new album, but results of a British poll reported last week shows that the eccentric superstar should command healthy sales figures. PopScores, a monthly quantitative measurement of the emotional connection between artists and consumers, shows that 82 percent of Jackson’s fans are ready to buy the new material he releases.
