Asked whether he has concerns about the process, 50 confided that he still gets a touch of stage fright before any performance: “I get butterflies. People don’t know I get nervous. When I’m on — like right before going on stage for like the first 45 seconds, you can look at me and say, ‘He’s scared right now, he’s nervous.’ I know that, but you know, after that 45 seconds I get into something that feels almost mechanical and it’s just cool. Like everything is just … it’s smooth from there.”

The ‘07 BET Awards aired live on the BET network on June 22nd at 8 p.m. ET/PT. A number of encore presentations are also scheduled through July.

EDDIE MURPHY’S A MATCH FOR MEL B.’S BABY
spice-and-murphy.png

The DNA test results are in, and Eddie Murphy has indeed been shown to be the father of Spice Girl Mel. B.’s two-month-old baby, Angel Iris. The singer known as Scary Spice has insisted all along that the baby was fathered by Murphy, who publicly disputed the paternity.

Murphy and Brown dated for a number of months in 2006 and were rumored to be headed for the altar. However, the couple broke up before Brown officially announced she was pregnant. In December Murphy said on Dutch television that he was not certain the child was his, and said he would demand a paternity test.

After giving birth on April 3rd, Brown put Murphy’s name on the baby’s birth certificate. She then petitioned the Los Angeles court to compel Murphy to submit to a DNA test, which he did on Monday (June 11th) at a Beverly Hills clinic.

“Eddie is the father and the rumors are true,” said Murphy publicity rep Liza Anderson soon after test results were revealed to both parties on Thursday (June 14th).

This is the second child for Brown, and the sixth for Murphy, who had five children with his ex-wife Nicole Mitchell. Murphy has been dating film and TV executive Tracey Edmonds, ex-wife of Grammy- winning songwriter-producer Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds.

Meanwhile, Brown looks to be on the comeback trail. An announcement about future plans for the reunited Spice Girls, one of the best-selling girl groups in pop music, is expected at a press conference on June 28th.

SUGE KNIGHT’S MANSION UP FOR SALE
suge-knight.jpg

Marion “Suge” Knight’s 8,272 square foot Malibu mansion was recently put up for sale for $6.2 million. The Associated Press reports that seven-bed, nine-bath home is on the market because Knight filed for bankruptcy protection last year to avoid a personal $107 million judgment. His record label, Death Row Records, was also placed in receivership by a federal judge.

The $107 million judgment against Knight stems from a lawsuit brought by Lydia Harris, the ex-wife of convicted drug kingpin Michael “Harry O” Harris. Michael Harris allegedly provided $1.5 million in start-up cash for Death Row Records but was cheated out of his share of the label by Knight. Lydia Harris filed suit against Knight and in March 2005 a judge ordered Knight to pay her $107 million after ruling that Harris was entitled to half of the mogul’s Death Row Records empire.

In related news, Knight is currently working on a reality show, titled Unfinished Business, and he continues to live lavishly. The mogul, who was interviewed at five star Beverly Hills hotel with his assistant and a personal Brazilian masseuse, explained how he was able to maintain his lifestyle to the Washington Post. He said, “Y’know, I’m a guy that did Chapter 11. I haven’t been working, so people feel sorry for me.”

Knight also finally opened up about the night in September 1996 when Tupac Shakur was shot while riding in his car. Knight said that Shakur was joking on his way to the hospital. According to Knight, Shakur, who had been shot in the chest and upper body, said, “Me? I mighta got shot here and I can feel it…..And I mighta got shot here and I can feel it. But you’re bleeding out of your (expletive) head.”

Knight’s skull was grazed by a bullet and he made a complete recovery. Shakur died from his wounds six days later.

KEM GOES TO THE WHITE HOUSE FOR BLACK MUSIC MONTH CELEBRATION
kem.jpg

Detroit singer-songwriter Kem was in attendance at the White House on Friday (June 22nd) for a special Black Music Month celebration presided over by President Bush. In fact, the President singled out the “Can’t Stop Loving You” singer in his remarks to an audience that included prominent African Americans from the entertainment and business worlds.

“We’re also going to welcome KEM Owens, who learned to love music growing up in Detroit listening to R&B greats,” said Bush. “He listened to them on his mom and dad’s radio. He taught himself to play piano at the home of his Baptist minister grandfather. But as a teenager, this good man lost his way. He became addicted to drugs and alcohol, and eventually he became homeless. Today he finds a home, a warm home to welcome him. He was sleeping on the ground near a building on the Detroit River, and he said this: God found him, and inspired him to set his life straight. With the help of the Almighty, he overcame his addictions, and he rediscovered his passion for music”

Bush continued with a laugh: “In 2001, he used a credit card to finance the production of an independent CD he called KEMistry. Get it, KEM Owens? KEMistry?”

Kem, who also spent time waiting tables in Detroit and securing financing to release Kemistry independently before the project was picked up for national distribution by Motown Records, admits that his road to success was atypical: “Instead of trying to start from the top with the record deal and trickle down, we started at the bottom and worked our way up because people were falling in love with the project man, the music, and they drove the radio here locally.”

Kem is currently working on the album follow-up to his smash 2006 CD KEM Album II.

He is set to perform July 22nd at the new JazzFest West — formerly the Old Pasadena JazzFest — in San Dimas, California. For more information, go to omegaevents.com.

BENJAMIN CHAVIS LEAVES HSAN ORGANIZATION TO HEAD HIPHOPSODASHOP CHAIN
ben-chavis.jpg

Benjamin F. Chavis, former head of the NAACP and a longtime social activist, has exited from his post at the head of the Hip- Hop Summit Action Network to take over as CEO of H3 Enterprises. As such, Chavis will oversee the development of worldwide eatery chain HipHopSodaShop, which plans to open its first store in St. Petersburg, Florida later this year.

The new restaurants will bring together hip-hop music, gaming, and healthy food with a community investment component. Chavis said several hundred thousand dollars will be invested in the first location, according to TargetMarketNews.com.

H3 is also looking to use HipHopSodaShop to promote sound business techniques, teach investment principles to hip-hop youth and incorporate social responsibility.

A second location will likely be in Harlem, with plans for more locations in South Africa, Jamaica, and the U.K.

H3 was founded two years ago by 25-year-old Brian Peters and a partner.

Chavis and hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons co-founded the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network, the non-profit organization that used hip- hop’s popularity to rally young people for positive social change, empowerment, and education.

MORGAN FREEMAN TAPPED TO PLAY NELSON MANDELA

Oscar winner Morgan Freeman has been tapped to play South African leader Nelson Mandela in the film adaptation, The Human Factor. The motion picture will be based on an upcoming book, titled The Human Factor: Nelson Mandela and the Game that Changed the World, by journalist John Carlin. The book examines Mandela’s public and private life in the first year of his presidency, when South Africa was just emerging from years of apartheid and Mandela was putting his 27 years of imprisonment behind him.

Freeman’s production company, Revelations Entertainment, is expected to begin production on the movie in early 2008, according to Reuters. No release date or co-stars have been announced for the film.

“I have known Nelson Mandela personally for quite some time, and am continually in awe of his enormous presence in the world. The opportunity to portray him in this film is a great honor,” Freeman said in a statement.

Freeman earned an Oscar for his role as Clint Eastwood’s buddy in the 2004 film, Million Dollar Baby.

Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and Carlos Santana will be on hand for an upcoming concert to raise funds for a memorial on the National Mall for the Reverend Martin Luther King. The Associated Press reported that the show, which is being organized by Quincy Jones, Russell Simmons and Tommy Hilfiger, will be held on September 18th at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall.

Among the performers already announced for the benefit are Robin Thicke, Bebe Winans, Cece Winans and Jessye Norman.

The Today show’s Al Roker is on board as a presenter with various celebrities, including Ben Affleck and Shaquille O’Neal, having signed on to be part of the concert host’s committee.

So far the committee working to build the monument has raised $79.5 million of the $100 million need to create and maintain the monument to King. The King Monument will be completed in 2008 and will sit between the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials and include a sculpture of the civil rights leader and 14 famous quotations from him.

LARRY KING NABS PARIS HILTON INTERVIEW
paris-hilton.jpg

Suspender-wearing broadcaster Larry King has nabbed Paris Hilton’s first post- prison interview. Hilton will appear on Larry King Live Wednesday night (June 27th) in an hour-long session previously set aside for filmmaker Michael Moore. Producers said they didn’t pay The Simple Life star anything to appear on the program but they will shell out money for the use of exclusive photos and other items provided by the Hilton family.

King got the Hilton interview after a week of negotiations between the Hilton family and various media outlets. NBC and ABC had both been vying for the Paris tell-all, but those plans were cancelled when word leaked out that they were going to pay up to a million dollars for the chance to sit down with Hilton.

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said it will release Hilton sometime on Tuesday (June 26th). She was sent to jail for violating probation on an alcohol- related driving charge.

Hilton said she’s being treated well in custody. Comedian Robin Williams seconded that opinion in a bit as one of her jail friends: “Yo, I saw Paris last night. I was sending stuff like tapping messages and mirroring her and stuff. And I was giving her a prison tattoo. I put in P-U-R-I-S. But then I realized if I changed the S to an M it would be Purim and that would be cool.”

MARLA MAPLES, SHAR JACKSON FULFILLED BY ‘EX-WIVES CLUB’
shar-jackson.jpg

ABC’s low-rated reality series, Ex-Wives Club, wraps its inaugural season tonight (June 25th) in what could very likely be its last outing. The idea of the show is for famous exes Marla Maples (Donald Trump’s second wife), Shar Jackson (Kevin Federline’s former squeeze), and Angie Everheart (ex-girlfriend of Sylvester Stallone) to council “real” women on their failed relationships.

The series didn’t prove very popular with the public, but Maples and Jackson said they both got a lot out of it. Maples said the program was her dream come true because she was able to help people in need: “The show to me is a dream come true. I’m doing what I’ve always wanted to do and what I’ve done for the past ten years one on one with people going through break-ups and heartaches. I love to help share my pain and how I got through it with other people.”

Jackson said she was wary of the show before warming up to it: “When I heard the title I was like, ‘Oh, God. A bunch of bitter women bashing men.’ It’s not about that. I just got excited. It helps me release all of the stuff that I was feeling, all of the stuff that I have been through and share my experiences with people and actually help them.”

Ex-Wives Club airs at 9/8 Central, on ABC.
