KEVIN GARNETT TRADED TO BOSTON
Kevin Garnett is leaving Minnesota after the Boston Celtics agreed to acquire the All-Star forward in a multiplayer trade with the Timberwolves, a Celtics official told The Associated Press. Among the players who could be headed to Minnesota are forward Al Jefferson, guard Sebastian Telfair, swingman Gerald Green and center Theo Ratliff, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been completed. The official also said the Timberwolves would get at least one draft choice.
The teams still had some things to clarify with the players’ contracts, but the official said that would not keep the Celtics from acquiring Garnett, although there could be a change in the players ticketed for the Timberwolves. There was a chance that a conference call announcing the trade — the possibility of which was first reported by FOXSports.com’s Jeff Goodman late Sunday — would be held Monday, the official said. Garnett, 31, has spent all of his 12 NBA seasons with Minnesota. He would get an extension of his contract, which has one year plus an option year remaining, the official said. The Celtics had tried to get Garnett late last month, but his agent said he didn’t want to go to Boston.
Since then, Boston acquired seven-time All-Star guard Ray Allen from Seattle in a draft day deal. Already with Paul Pierce, the Celtics would become instant contenders in the mediocre Atlantic Division with Garnett, even without promising forward Jefferson.
The Celtics obtained Allen and the 35th pick of the draft for guards Delonte West and Wally Szczerbiak, and forward Jeff Green of Georgetown, whom they drafted with the fifth pick. The Celtics have won just three playoff series during Pierce’s nine years with them. They still have an NBA-record 16 championships, but none since 1986. “They have no excuses, this team out there,” Danny Ainge, the executive director of basketball operations, said after Allen was acquired. Pierce, 29, led the Celtics in scoring last season but played only 47 games because of injury. Allen, who turns 32 next month, averaged a career-high 26.4 points last season, his 11th, but underwent surgery to remove bone spurs on both ankles that required him to wear protective boots. He is expected to be ready for training camp.
MINNESOTA TAILBACK PETERSON GETS PAID
Tailback Adrian Peterson ended his two-day absence from the Minnesota Vikings’ training camp on Sunday afternoon, reaching agreement on a five-year contract with a maximum value of $40.5 million and including $17 million in guarantees.
Expected to share the load in the Minnesota backfield, where he will split time with veteran Chester Taylor, who rushed for 1,214 yards in 2006, Peterson was the seventh overall player selected in the draft. While there were some concerns about his durability, and specifically about a fractured left collarbone that sidelined him for seven games last season, the Vikings felt he was too good to pass on. Minnesota did extensive background work on Peterson’s collarbone injury and determined that he would be able to rehabilitate without surgery, which turned out to be the case. The gamble on Peterson, one of the most celebrated high school backs in the past decade when he decided to enroll at Oklahoma, could pay off handsomely for coach Brad Childress. With a first-year starter at quarterback, in Tarvaris Jackson, the Vikings are likely to rely heavily on the run in 2007, and the combination of Taylor and Peterson should provide them a very solid tandem. Peterson, 22, carried 747 times for 4,045 yards and 41 touchdowns for the Sooners, and had 24 catches for 198 yards and one score. He rushed for 1,000 or more yards in each of his three college seasons, but his best performance came as a freshman in 2004, when he had 1,925 yards despite starting only eight games. Blessed with a thick upper body, Peterson possesses a rare combination of size (6-feet-1½, 217 pounds), speed and strength. He was clocked at a blistering 4.40 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the combine, and showed superb athleticism with a 38½-inch vertical jump and a long jump of 10-feet, 3-inches. Most of the concerns about Peterson revolve around his upright running style, which means he absorbs a lot of hits, and could be susceptible to injury. In 2004, he suffered a left shoulder injury that subsequently required surgery the following spring. He had right thigh and ankle injuries which slowed him in 2005, then the fractured collarbone last season.
ANGIE STONE SAYS ‘CELEBRITY FIT CLUB’ WAS A CHALLENGE
Singer and songwriter Angie Stone is preparing for the release of her first album for Stax Records, to be titled The Art Of Love And War. In gearing up to write, record, and promote the new title, Stone spent some time getting in shape. Last year her weight loss journey was featured on VH1’s popular reality show Celebrity Fit Club.
During the show, Stone was recovering from severe heart problems, which sometimes impeded her progress. But asked recently about the experience, Stone said: “I decided for myself to do Celebrity Fit Club. It was a way of challenging me because any other time it was coming time to diet I would give myself an excuse not to do it. So I figured if I went on nationwide TV then I would have to do it. And you know obviously what came out of it is I lost a little bit of weight, I’m feeling a little better — a lot better about myself and I think I’ve been an inspiration to a lot of women who dared to go there.”
The Art Of Love And War is due on October 16th. Stone’s first single is “Baby” featuring Betty Wright.
JILL SCOTT TO HIT BIG SCREEN, RELEASE NEW CD
Grammy-winning singer Jill Scott boosts her big-screen career this fall with a starring role in Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married, also starring Janet Jackson, Richard T. Jones, Malik Yoba, and Michael Jai White. In addition, she will be releasing her long-awaited studio album follow-up to Words & Sounds Volume II: Beautifully Human.
In Why Did I Get Married, another adaptation of one of Perry’s successful stage plays, Scott portrays an obese woman in an unhappy marriage. She wears a fat suit in the flick, and Perry says he was stunned by her performance. “It’s like she’s born to do this,” Perry said in a statement. “Her acting is so natural, I was shocked. When this woman smiles, she lights up a room.”
Why Did I Get Married, about a group of vacationing couples whose trip is marred by a flirtatious single female, opens in theaters October 16th.
Scott will also release her new studio album, titled The Real Thing, on September 18th. Her last release was the compilation Collaborations, a set of her duets with other artists.
Scott was also recently cast as the lead of The Number One Ladies Detective Agency, shooting in Botswana. According to SOHH.com, Scott’s character of Precious Ramotswe opens an agency after the death of her father. With the help of her assistant, played by Anika Noni Rose, Ramotswe takes on a cheating husband, insurance fraud, witchcraft and a kidnapper. The film is due next year.
EDDIE MURPHY ENGAGED TO TRACEY EDMONDS
Eddie Murphy and girlfriend Tracey Edmonds got engaged on Wednesday, July 25th. OK! magazine first reported the news after spotting an engagement ring on Edmonds’ finger at the premiere of Who’s Your Caddy last week. A representative of Edmonds then confirmed for People magazine that, “Tracey and Eddie are both very much in love and are excited about spending the rest of their lives together.” No date has been set for the nuptials.
Murphy began dating Edmonds in October of 2006 following a months-long relationship with Mel B. of the Spice Girls. Murphy left Mel in October prior to her announcement that she was pregnant. At first Murphy denied paternity, but a court- ordered DNA test conducted last month proved him to be the father.
Murphy was married to first wife Nicole Mitchell for 12 years. The two were divorced in 2006.
Tracey Edmonds was married to music producer Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds for 13 years. Their divorce was finalized last month.
PEABO GETS NEW DEAL

Grammy winning singer Peabo Bryson has signed to Peak Records, the label co- founded by smooth jazz guitarist and producer Russ Freeman and artist manager Andi Howard. Bryson’s debut release for the label, Missing You, is set for release on October 2nd. Missing You will be the veteran pop/R&B vocalist’s first studio recording in eight years, and the 20th album of his career. Bryson’s first single from the set is titled “Count On Me.”
Anticipation is high for the next album from soul veteran Al Green, who has been collaborating with Philadelphia hip-hop crew the Roots and their producing member Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson.on an album of duets with contemporary singers. Green, whose 2006 album Everything’s OK was the second to reunite him with his earlier hit making collaborator Willie Mitchell, is also excited about the upcoming project.
Green said that working with The Roots was refreshing, as they created new material quickly. He said: “We already wrote the songs, these first songs right out the — this is like fresh milk from the cow. We wrote songs right on the floor. And when you give these other young artists a shot at it it’s interesting to see what art they make. And it’s beautiful. “
Currently, the list of guest artists and songs for the new project have not been confirmed.
MICHAEL VICK PLEADS INNOCENT, LOSES ENDORSEMENT DEALS
NFL player Michael Vick pleaded innocent in a Richmond court last Thursday (July 26th) to federal charges that he and three friends were operating an illegal dogfighting ring at his home in Virginia. The Atlanta Falcons quarterback was released without bond and is due back in court November 26th for trial.
While the player maintains that he is innocent of the charges, he and his co-defendants were forced to surrender his passport and warned not to use or sell drugs.
The federal charges also scared off two of Vick’s corporate sponsors. Nike suspended its contract with the football player on Friday (July 27th) while Reebok, the official supplier of NFL uniforms, took the unprecedented step of pulling his Number 7 jersey from its retail outlets.
In addition, top trading card company Donruss announced it was pulling Vick’s likeness from any new packs.
Vick has also been suspended from the Falcons’ training camp while brass decide how to handle the situation.
NO MORE GLOOM AND DOOM FOR ‘GREY’S ANATOMY’
Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes has good news for fans — the show’s upcoming fourth season will be devoid of the doom and gloom that pervaded the past season’s storylines. Death and infidelity were big topics in Season Three, and those themes added to the backlash against the series from people already turned off by the program’s behind-the- scenes drama with Isaiah Washington and T.R. Knight.
Rhimes acknowledged that Grey’s “darker journey” was oftentimes testing for viewers, and she said in a press conference that the same won’t happen in Season Four: “I think that the thing that I sort of came back to the season sort of mandating was that I wanted us to have a lot of fun. Like I felt like Season Three is a darker season, it just is. I mean, Meredith’s mother died, George’s father died, Meredith’s step-mother died — it was like a bloodbath. It was a necessary one but I want to feel, I want to get back to us enjoying it and having fun.”

NICK CANNON WANTS TO SHOW OFF HIS DRAMATIC SIDE
Actor, singer, and funnyman Nick Cannon wants to get serious. Which is why he took a role in the big screen drama American Son, due in 2008. Cannon will play the lead in a story about a new recruit fresh from Camp Pendleton who faces a wide range of issues while on leave with his family over the Thanksgiving holiday.
“It’s something that’s extremely dramatic,” Cannon told syndicated columnist Marilyn Beck. “It’s about a young Marine and what he goes through during the 100 hours before his deployment. I was excited about doing something few people have seen me do.”
Cannon went through boot camp to prepare for the role, but he said that wasn’t the hardest part of making the film. “We actually shot this full scene with me naked. I didn’t expect to have to do that. That was interesting. I mean, I had nothing on at all. But I’m kind of an exhibitionist anyway, so I kind of got over it,” he explained.
Cannon is known for his comic turns on his production Wild N Out and Short Circuitz, as well as films like The Underclassmen and Roll Bounce. But he has also been branching into dramas, like his role in the ensemble drama Bobby.
Cannon also hosts Nick Cannon’s Star Camp, a reality series about a youth group known as The Giggle Club who learn how to be stars. It streams every Sunday on Nickelodeon’s broadband video player, TurboNick.
