PRINCE ENGAGED IN A BATTLE

prince-stylin.jpg

One Prince fan is fighting back against the pop star’s attempts to eradicate all un-authorized postings of his music and image on various websites. One YouTube.com user, whose 29-second video of her infant dancing to “Let’s Go Crazy” was removed from the site, was later allowed to re-post the footage, reports ABC News. As Prince moved ahead with his copyright infringement crackdown, Stephanie Lenz reportedly received an e-mail from YouTube saying that her clip was removed at the request of Universal Music Publishing Group, and that her YouTube account could be canceled in the event of any future copyright infringements. But the woman filed a counter notice with the popular file-sharing site and was allowed to re-post the footage six weeks after its removal. YouTube officials told ABC News that the site is bound by provisions in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act to honor all takedown and counter-notices. As previously reported, Prince hired a British firm called Web Sheriff to help police the Internet and threatened to take legal action against websites that post his copyrighted material.

WHERE ARE O.J. ‘S FRIENDS?

oj-simpson.jpg

A third accomplice in the O.J. Simpson memorabilia heist case agreed to testify against him on Monday (October 29th). Michael McClinton has agreed to plead guilty to robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery in return for a reduced sentence. McClinton, a 49-year-old security guard, provides what may be the most damaging testimony yet against Simpson in the September 13th incident in Las Vegas. McClinton says he impersonated a police officer and wielded a gun, at Simpson’s request, in the confrontation with two sports memorabilia dealers at the Palace Station hotel.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, OTIS WILLIAMS!!!

otis-williams-on-stage.jpgotis-williams.jpg

Happy Birthday to Temptations’ co-founder Otis Williams, who turns 66 . Williams, who was present at the birth of Motown, alongside founder Berry Gordy Jr., Smokey Robinson, and a host of others, is the sole surviving original member of the Temptations still performing with the group.

Williams has outlived all of the other members of the Temps’ classic lineup: Paul Williams, David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks and Melvin Franklin.

Last week the Temps released their latest album, Back To Front. The set, which has been getting positive reviews, features the group’s versions of some of their own personal favorites, including Sam & Dave’s “Hold On! I’m Comin’,” Barry White’s “Never Never Gonna Give Ya Up,” the Bee Gees’ “How Deep Is Your Love,” the Staple Singers’ “Respect Yourself,” L.T.D. with Jeffrey Osborne’s “(Every Time I Turn Around) Back In Love Again,” and the Doobie Brothers’ “Minute By Minute,” among others.

Williams recalled after years of struggling with no success, how the Temps found out about scoring their first hit in 1964: “We recorded ‘The Way You Do The Things You Do’ and went to upstate Michigan and was up there for a number of weeks and came back, and Berry (Gordy) had been trying to find us. They told us ‘You guys finally got a hit.’ Somebody got the Billboard and the Cash Box and showed us we were in the charts, and David Ruffin and myself sat down and we cried because we had tried so many years of getting there. And we were off and running.”

The Temptations are on tour with the Four Tops in Europe, and perform in Frankfurt, Germany.

The Temps’ next U.S. show will be on December 10th in Brookings, South Dakota at the Swiftel Center.

DENZEL WASHINGTON STARS IN & DIRECTS NEXT FILM FOR HARPO

denzel-washington.jpg

Actor Denzel Washington, on screens this week as legendary New York outlaw Frank Lucas in American Gangster, will have another film in theaters this December. The Great Debaters not only features the Oscar winner as its star, but he directed the project as well.

The Great Debaters tells the true story of a small-town, African-American college debate team in 1935 that went all the way to the national championships against Harvard. Washington plays a professor at the college.

The cast also features Forest Whitaker, Kimberly Elise, Jurnee Smollet, and Jermaine Williams, among others.

“I’m very happy with the film,” Washington told Jam! Showbiz. “It’s a completely different film than (American Gangster). It’s a great movie for these young actors.”

The film is being produced by Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Productions.

NEVERLAND COULD BE NEVERMORE

Michael Jackson stands to lose his Neverland Ranch in California unless he pays back a $23 million loan in the next 90 days. Jackson’s attorneys filed papers titled “Notice of Default and Election to Sell” in Santa Barbara county in California on October 22nd. The loan default comes as the Prince of Bahrain is suing Jackson for $7 million, and although he has settled several other lawsuits, they have yet to be paid off. Fox News speculates that Jackson could file for bankruptcy within the next 90 days to prevent future disasters.

Oprah Winfrey begged for forgiveness from South African parents on Sunday after a slew of physical and sexual abuse claims at her all-girls school in South Africa emerged. The New York Daily News reports that in recent weeks, several allegations made by students at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls claim that school matrons fondled and beat the female students. One incident claims a matron allegedly grabbed a girl by the throat and tossed her into a wall. The allegations came to light after a student ran away from the school’s dorms, reportedly because the abuse had become overwhelming.

ANGIE STONE HAS THE JUICE

angie-stone.jpg

Singer and songwriter Angie Stone’s latest CD, The Art Of Love And War, leaps onto the Billboard 200 chart at Number 11, her highest chart position to date. The debut also signals a high for Concord Records’ relaunched Stax label, which had been dormant for 34 years. Interest in Stone’s latest album is spurred by the single “Baby” featuring soul veteran Betty Wright. The tune is Number One on the urban adult chart. Recently, Stone explained her songwriting process: “When I go into my writing mode it happens spontaneously. It has to be something that drives me to do it, either I’m walking down the street and something I see gets me going, or if I’m listening to music I just instinctively start writing. And what comes to mind is crazy. People think I just write about everyday life situations, but I’m a character in itself, so it’s so many other things going on that I could write about. “

SNOOP DOGG PROCLAMATION RETRACTED

snoop-dogg.jpg

Rapper Snoop Dogg and Exotic Erotic Ball founder Perry Mann were scheduled to receive proclamations from San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom on Friday (October 26th) in recognition of the 28th Annual Exotic Erotic Ball. Instead, the Mayor’s office has withdrawn the proclamation.

Allhiphop.com reports that the Mayor’s office was forced to withdraw the proclamations due to stricter rules on the issuing process, after Mayor Newsom unwittingly proclaimed February 23 “Colt Studio Day,” in honor of the 40th anniversary of a local gay porno studio.

A representative of Mayor’s office told The San Francisco Chronicle, “In the wake of the Colt Studios controversy, procedures were put in place to prevent this from becoming a chronic problem. In this case, the procedures worked and there was no proclamation issued.”

Exotic Erotic Ball producer Howard Mauskopf said, “All we can really do is roll our eyes. What you have here is a Mayor who I think means to do the right thing, but ended up getting fried in the national press. Instead of him standing up for the community, he kowtowed to the Bill O’Reilly’s of the world and instituted a stricter policy. So when it reached a final decision for this proclamation to be reviewed by this new committee, they felt it was too commercial because of the Ball’s sexual nature and Snoop’s past.”

NOTORIOUS B.I.G. STATUE UNVEILED

notorius-big.jpg

On Thursday morning (October 25th), the Notorious B.I.G.’s statue was unveiled at Manhattan’s Madame Tussaud’s wax museum. MTV.com reports that the Brooklyn High School for the Arts choir sang Diddy’s hit “I’ll Be Missing You” while Biggie’s mother, Voletta Wallace, and former manager, Wayne Barrow, posed for photos with the statue.

The life sized statue features the Notorious B.I.G. decked out in a white suit, white fedora topped with a cream ribbon, and matching shoes.

Ms. Wallace said, “Looking at the statue, I have a mixed feeling. A little sad, a little happy. It’s incredibly accurate. (But) I’m a little emotional, ’cause I feel that that statue over there looks very much like my son. I wish it was real; I wish it was breathing. As a mother, I’m extremely emotional. But at the same time I’m happy that Madame Tussaud’s has honored him and made a statue for the world to see.”

In related news, Barrow provided an update on the casting for the Notorious B.I.G. biopic. Sean Kingston and Beanie Sigel both auditioned for the role but according to Barrow the producers are looking for an unknown.

Barrow explained, “The representation of Christopher Wallace is very hard to find. It’s a combination of things. One is the element of the man — his heart condition, his swagger — and beyond that, you have to be able to act. You’re not coming in there to play this man; you’re coming in to portray him. It’s totally different. So you have to bring your own sensibility of who you are to the table and your own sense of swagger and put that on the big screen in the way that Christopher Wallace would.”

DON CHEADLE DRAWS ATTENTION TO DARFUR GENOCIDE

don-cheadle.jpg

Actor Don Cheadle has produced and appears in a documentary, Darfur Now, which focuses on the genocide in that region. Since his highly acclaimed appearance in Hotel Rwanda Cheadle has become active in drawing attention to unrest in Africa. Darfur Now follows Cheadle and other individuals — including locals, activists, and United Nations representatives — who gain exclusive access to the war-torn region in an attempt to bring justice to the people of Darfur who have been victimized by a government-backed militia. The film hits theaters on November 2nd.

Cheadle told MTV.com that rebels groups are fighting with each other, as well as with the government because they haven’t been paid. “It really is chaos, but fortunately the peace talks are scheduled to happen at the end of this month. And there are going to be 30,000 troops that have already been approved by the government of Sudan to come in and protect the people and try to find peace and, eventually, hopefully, justice for them.”

Cheadle noted that the conflict in Darfur is not racially or religiously driven. “I think now it’s sort of been fractured,” he said. “There are so many different factions attempting to amass some sort of power base before these troops move. It’s what leaders do when they want to maintain power. They fuel divisions that were already sort of nascent between peoples that identify with one group or another. They foster these conflicts and they divide them and point them against each other.”

As for media coverage, he says, “The media has often preoccupied itself with the most salacious (stories), but I don’t hear a great outcry for more insightful, introspective reporting on certain issues. So I guess we’re kind of going to get what we get.”

LOST LOOSING ITS’ STARS

daniel-dae-kim-lost.jpg

Lost star Daniel Dae Kim is now the third actor from the show to have been arrested for DUI in Hawaii, where the hit ABC series is filmed. Kim was booked at the Honolulu police station early Thursday (October 25th) morning and released on bail at 5:05 a.m. Kim’s former costars Michelle Rodriguez and Cynthia Watros were both busted for the same offense last year. Additionally, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who had a recurring role on Lost, was arrested for driving without a license in 2006 but the charges were later dropped.

BARACK OBAMA FACING CONTINUED CRITICISM FROM GAY RIGHTS GROUPS

barack-obama.jpg

Presidential candidate and Illinois Senator Barack Obama is being roundly criticized by gay rights groups for scheduling a gospel concert on Sunday featuring gospel star Donnie McClurkin, who has made controversial statements about homosexuality. The Human Rights Campaign urged Obama to cancel McClurkin’s appearance at a special fundraising concert set for October 28th in Columbia, South Carolina.

Gay right activists say that McClurkin counsels followers that homosexuality is a curse that can be cured through prayer, an experience he went through himself. But in a recent Chicago Tribune interview, McClurkin said that his words had been misconstrued.

In the meantime, Obama has not canceled McClurkin’s appearance, but has added an openly gay minister, the Rev. Andy Sidden, to speak on the program.

Outcry against McClurkin’s appearance on Obama’s gospel tour has been going on all week. On Thursday, Obama aides noted that the candidate stands by a statement he made on Monday, which reads: “I have consistently spoken directly to African-American religious leaders about the need to overcome the homophobia that persists in some parts our community so that we can confront issues like HIV/AIDS and broaden the reach of equal rights in this country.”

MAN ARRESTED FOR VANDALIZING TUPAC STATUE

tupac.jpg

Racial tensions have been rising around the country as nooses have turned up on high school and college campuses. Last Saturday (October 20th), a vandal placed a noose around the neck of the statue of Tupac Shakur located in the garden of the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts in Stone Mountain, Georgia. The vandals also allegedly defaced the building.

A second incident occurred at Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts early Monday morning (October 22nd). The statue of Shakur was defaced again as it was plastered with “handbills of garbled rants that include references to 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, as well as vague threats against various record companies and rappers.”

The Associated Press reports that one man has been arrested in relation to the incidents so far.

The late rapper’s mother Afeni Shakur said in a released statement, “We thank everyone for their prayers and support. Although our hearts are temporarily in pain, our spirits have already forgiven the perpetrators. Hate comes in all colors and genders therefore we will use this act of hate and ignorance to bring our community together and to pray for the healing of those who harbor such feelings. With God’s guidance, the work of the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts and Peace Garden will continue to positively impact and transform our community.”

50 CENT, AKON, & OTHERS VOICE SUPPORT FOR T.I.

50-cent.jpg

Rapper T.I. is due back in federal court on Friday (October 26th) and a judge is expected to rule on whether or not the rapper will be released on bail. In the meantime, many of the rapper’s peers have voiced their support. MTV.com reports that David Banner released a new song online, titled “B.A.N. (The Love Song)” a.k.a. “Free T.I.P.,” which addresses the situation.

Banner explained, “For the most part on the song, I’m saying we gotta take responsibility in our own community. Some of our people are messing up, but it ain’t for America to tear them down. People got on me for supporting Mike Vick, but if America don’t support him, don’t mean I gotta turn my back on him.”

50 Cent, who filled in for T.I. at the Philadelphia Powerhouse concert, also weighed in on the situation. According to the G-Unit general, T.I. may be better off copping a plea since he was set up.

50 Cent said, “I hope he can make the best out of that situation. If he gets 10 years, that ain’t bad. If the security person is already telling, it’s obvious that’s their witness. They got tapes, they got all this. … (If it was me,) I would have to tell the people I did it and sit down for a minute. Nobody wants to hear that you have to stay 10 years nowhere. It’s not a good thing, period. It’s unfortunate, but he got himself in that space. I don’t know the real facts. Maybe he didn’t do it; let’s keep our fingers crossed.”

KEYSHIA COLE LAUNCHING SECOND SEASON OF REALITY SHOW

keyshia-cole.jpg

Singer Keyshia Cole returns to TV in a second season of the BET reality show Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is, which premieres October 30th at 10:30 p.m. The new season documents Cole’s struggle to balance a difficult family life with her career as she records her sophomore CD Just Like You.

According to BET, the new season follows Cole as she invites several family members to live in her multi-million dollar Atlanta mansion. Among them are her mother, recently released from prison after serving three years for drug-related charges, and her sister, Neffie, who suffers from alcoholism. Cole’s “house rules” — including no men in the house — lead to so much discord that Cole eventually seeks professional help.

Cole’s reality show has received critical praise, mostly for the down-to-earth personality and true talent demonstrated by the multi-platinum star. Recently Cole explained that while she was always determined to be a successful recording artist, she had just one prayer: “One of the first things I asked God for when I got into the business — because I understand that it’s a blessing and He’s guided my career from the first day I left Oakland — the first thing I asked for was that it don’t change me. Because if it does, I’d rather just not be here, I’d rather be back home in the ‘hood just chillin’. I mean, it’s good to be here but it ain’t that serious.”

Meanwhile, Cole’s CD Just Like You regains the Number One spot on the Billboard Hot R&B Albums chart this week. The Oakland-born artist is boosted by the popularity of her current single “Let It Go” featuring Missy Elliott.

SEAL TO PERFORM AT VICTORIA’S SECRET SPECIAL WITH HEIDI KLUM

seal.jpg

International singing star Seal is set to perform at the upcoming Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show where his wife Heidi Klum will be strutting the catwalk. In fact, US magazine is reporting that the German-born supermodel will join her husband to perform “Wedding Day,” a duet from the album that they recently recorded together. Kanye West and the Spice Girls will also perform on the telecast, which will air December 4th on CBS.

Seal had a Grammy-winning hit in 1995 with “Kiss From A Rose,” the track from Batman Forever that thrust him into stardom. He says he is fortunate to have lucked into the tie-in: No one in the record company believed in ‘Kiss From a Rose.’ I was just really lucky. Everyone has that stroke of luck. I had Batman Forever. It’s a stroke of luck. It’s a numbers game, and now admittedly you create your own luck because the one thing that doesn’t change — the one constant — is your focus.

Seal will release the new CD System on November 13th.

In related news, Klum appears on today’s Oprah Winfrey Show devoted to “Superstar Couples.”

On the show, Klum reveals that when she first met Seal it was lust at first sight. “I met him in a hotel lobby in New York City,” she said, “and he came in just from the gym and was sitting there and I was, like, wow.” The singer was wearing his form-fitting bicycle shorts, which inspired Klum. “I pretty much saw everything,” she said of his outfit, “the whole package.”

The couple have two children together and are also raising Klum’s child from a previous relationship.

FOXY BROWN IN SOLITARY CONFINEMENT

foxy-brown1.jpg

Rapper Foxy Brown, who is currently serving a one year prison sentence for violating the terms of her probation, was sentenced to 76 days in the hole on October 16th for allegedly breaking prison rules three times. The New York Post reports that Brown’s first infraction occurred on October 3rd when Brown and another female inmate began shoving each other on their way to the dining hall in the Rose M. Singer facility at Riker’s Island prison. The two inmates were separated before the incident escalated. The next day, October 4th, Brown got two more strikes when she was verbally abusive toward correction officers and refused to take a random drug test.

After the three incidents, the Department of Correction sentenced Brown to 76 days in “punitive segregation” where she can spend up to 23 hours alone in her cell. The rapper will only be allowed out for one hour a day to see visitors, meet with an attorney, go to the library or exercise in an isolated recreation area.

Brown could receive additional time in solitary confinement after prison officials review another incident in which the rapper refused three times to board the prison bus to go to court.

Brown was on probation for assaulting two manicurists in 2004.

Brown will release an indie project, Brooklyn Diva, on November 20th. The album is her first since 2001′s Broken Silence.

CELEBRITIES AFFECTED BY WILDFIRES

tom-hanks.jpg

Tori Spelling, Mel Gibson and Kelsey Grammer are among the celebrities being greatly affected by the raging wildfires in California. Spelling and her husband Dean McDermott were forced to evacuate Chateau La Rue, their bed & breakfast in Fallbrook, California, which is featured in their reality show, Tori and Dean: Inn Love. McDermott told People magazine, “We don’t know the extent of it. There were guests on their way (to the B&B), but they were notified and sent back. The whole town of Fallbrook was evacuated.”

Grammer and Gibson were forced to evacuate their Malibu homes over the weekend, and houses belonging to Jennifer Aniston, Sean Penn, Tom Hanks and Sting are also in the line of fire. Variety reported that DreamWorks studio executive Jeffrey Katzenberg had covered his home with fire-retardant foam to protect it while his studio partner David Geffen is letting firefighters and rescue workers stay for free at a small luxury hotel he owns close by.

Additionally, filming on several TV shows had to be halted because the flames and smoke were looming too close to the location sets and many of the actors and personnel couldn’t reach the locations due to closed off roads. According to CNN.com, FOX’s 24 was shooting at a Marine Corps air station in Irvine, about 40 miles southeast of Los Angeles, and was forced to cancel filming due to smoke from the Santiago fire. CBS’ Cold Case and ABC’s Big Shots either canceled shoots or moved locations. Cold Case’s Simi Valley sets were blown over by the strong Santa Ana winds.

ALICIA KEYS ADDRESSES LESBIAN RUMORS AS SINGLE TOPS AIRPLAY CHART

alicia-keyes-oct07.jpg

Grammy-winner Alicia Keys is embracing a more glamorous look these days, in advance of the November 11th release of her new studio CD, As I Am. The singer, who once wore only corn-rowed hairstyles and pants, recently said she understands why she was rumored to be a lesbian after the 2001 release of her debut CD, Songs In A Minor.

Keys has denied that she is a lesbian, but says her style and manner probably led to the rumors. “I was definitely rough around the edges. I look back at certain interviews and I’m like, ‘Damn! Did I have to look that hard? Did I have to do my hair that way?’” said Keys, according to ContactMusic.com. “I could see why people couldn’t see the diamond in the rough. I didn’t take it to heart. I know what I am. I know it’s not true.”

Keys, who was one of the performers at the Heineken Red Star Soul Finale last night (October 23rd) in New York, has been tapped to perform at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo, Norway, in December.

The singer’s film career is also continuing. After appearing in last year’s Smokin’ Aces and this year’s The Nanny Diaries, Keys is set to star in Compositions In Black And White, a musical biography being produced by Halle Berry. Production has not yet begun, but Keys feels the story is compelling. She said: “It’s called Compositions In Black And White. And it’s about a woman named Phillippa Schuyler who was actually half black and half white, this classical pianist in the ’40s in Harlem. It’s an incredible story about the ways that … you know, she had to try to find ways to totally almost change who she was just to be able to play classical music at that time.”

Meanwhile, Key’s song “No One,” the first single from As I Am, has reached the Number One spot on the national pop airplay chart this week.

BEYONCE CONCERT CANCELED AFTER TURKISH TRAGEDY

beyonce-new-oct.jpg

Beyonce’s Turkish concert, originally set for tonight (October 24th), has been canceled. Organizers called off the Istanbul show out of respect for 12 Turkish soldiers who were killed in a Kurdish rebel ambush attack on Sunday (October 21st).

Beyonce’s performance was to be part of the 100th anniversary celebration for the Turkish soccer club Fenerbahce. But in a statement issued Tuesday (October 23rd), the team noted: “Following recent unsettling events in Turkey, Fenerbahce Sports Club has cancelled its centenary celebratory event which was planned as a stadium concert to be performed by the worldwide star Beyonce in Istanbul on Wednesday. The Club expresses our condolences to the country.”

Fenerbahce also sent a message to the star, saying, “We also express our gratitude to Beyonce Knowles for her understanding that we are left with no alternative but to reschedule the concert to a more appropriate time.”

Beyonce’s next stop on her international tour is Mumbai, India, on Saturday (October 27th).

SEXUAL, PHYSICAL ABUSE ALLEGATIONS AT OPRAH’S SCHOOL

oprah-on-stage.jpg

More details of the alleged misconduct by a dorm parent at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa have surfaced. According to Fox News, an Afrikaans-language newspaper reported that the female employee is accused of various incidents of physical and sexual abuse against the students.

The woman, who has since been removed from the campus, allegedly grabbed a girl by the throat and threw her against a wall. Other alleged charges were that she swore and screamed at the girls, assaulted them and had sexually fondled at least one of them, according to Rapport newspaper. The alleged incidents went public after one of the pupils ran away from the school because the abuse had become intolerable, according to Rapport. Her parents immediately notified the school. Winfrey, herself the victim of childhood sexual abuse, immediately caught a flight to South Africa to check on the allegations. She is said to have arrived just over a week ago, missing an important Hollywood engagement. She then returned unexpectedly on Friday and left again on Sunday, reports Fox News. The TV mogul met with the school’s executive and private investigators and held a two-hour meeting with the parents of her students, who were flown to Johannesburg from all over the country. A report by a private investigator flown in from the United States to conduct an inquiry with a South African counterpart has been turned over to the local police. In her only public comment about the incident, Winfrey issued a statement saying: “Nothing is more serious or devastating to me than an allegation of misconduct by an adult against any girl at the academy.”

HALLE APOLOGETIC FOLLOWING VERBAL SLIP

halle-on-tonight.jpg

Halle Berry is apologetic after accidentally making an anti-Semitic joke during a recent taping for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Although the comment was edited out for the NBC broadcast, at her request, last Friday (October 19th), audience members told The New York Post that while showing Leno pictures of herself taken with a photo booth program, the actress said, “Here’s one where I look like my Jewish cousin.”

Mac’s photo booth, which distorts images like a carnival fun-house mirror, had in this case produced a blown-up image of her nose. Berry was reportedly near tears when the Post confronted her with the story. She told the paper on Monday (October 22nd) “I so didn’t mean to offend anybody — and after the show I realized it could be seen as offensive, so I asked Jay to take it out, and he did.”

MARIAH CAREY LOVES NEW CD, NEW PERFUME

mariah-carey.jpg

Singer Mariah Carey is thrilled with the progress made on her forthcoming CD, the still untitled follow-up to her 2005 smash The Emancipation Of Mimi, which earned her three Grammy Awards.

“It’s hard for me to sit here and talk about it without sounding like I’m bragging if I’m in love with it, but I’m in love with this album,” Carey told Billboard.com about the new set, due in early 2008. “I think that having the success with the last record allowed me to have more freedom and just make records that I like. It’s kind of a really fun record.”

Carey is also in love with her new fragrance, M by Mariah Carey. The world of perfume is new to Carey, particularly because she wasn’t known to wear any in the past, but she says she was intrigued when she was approached by the Elizabeth Arden cosmetics company about creating a signature scent.

Carey wanted the perfume to incorporate her favorite scents, including Moroccan incense; a flower called the Living Tahitian Tiare; and the smell of toasted marshmallows, a memory from her childhood. “It’s blended in there — it’s not like you’re gonna walk around smelling like marshmallows,” Carey added.

TYSON BECKFORD TEAMS WITH NIKI TAYLOR FOR REALITY MODELING SHOW

tyson-beckford.jpg

Top male model Tyson Beckford will team with fellow model Niki Taylor to host the new reality TV competition, Make Me a Supermodel, scheduled to premiere early next year on Bravo. Based on a British series of the same name, Make Me A Supermodel will give 14 male and female hopefuls a chance a modeling contract and $100,000 while living in a New York City Loft.

Unlike Tyra Banks’ successful America’s Next Top Model, the finalists of the new series will be determined by viewer voting.

Beckford broke into modeling in 1994 via a Polo Sport campaign. He subsequently landed a multiyear contract with Ralph Lauren and has served as a spokesmodel for Polo Fragrances and Polo Sport.

He’s also developed a film career, appearing in Zoolander, Into the Blue and Biker Boyz.

Taylor, who’s been modeling since she was 14, is still the youngest model to appear on the cover of Vogue. She is now the mother of two, the owner of a Nashville boutique, and founder of Begin Foundation for the Advancement of Women in Business.

HOWARD HEWETT SINGLE CLIMBS THE CHARTS

howard-hewitt.jpg

R&B singer Howard Hewett has a bona fide R&B adult hit with his latest single “Can U Feel Me?” from his new CD If Only. The single was Number 27 on the national urban AC radio chart last week, and ranks at Number 25 on Billboard’s Adult Airplay chart.

Hewett, who once sang with the pop group Shalamar, has long been known for his romantic ballads. The singer and songwriter says that many people think he writes songs from his own experience.

He explained: “Well a lot of people always ask me — you know I do a lot of romantic songs — ‘Are you that way?’ And when I think about it, in some ways I am that way. In some ways. Some things are things that I observe in other people’s relationships or other things going on in the world. And some things are ways that I wish I was, you know what I mean? You know, I wish I was that type of romantic person.”

HALLE WANTS HER STORY TOLD…SO SHE TELLS IT.

halley-pregnant-photo.jpg

She the video here!!!

Two days after she had announced she was pregnant, Halle Berry was chased by paparazzi and smashed her car into a wall.

She spoke to Tavis Smiley in an exclusive interview to be broadcast on PBS Friday night (tonight, Oct. 19). “This is something I want to say on your show because I know you and nobody else wants to tell the story,” Halle said. Obviously she was concerned about her unborn child. “I thought, ‘Oh my God, I hope this jolt and this bang hasn’t done anything to me internally.’ That’s immediately what I thought. When I got out of my car, of course, they had scattered. Everybody left. Those people don’t have license plates on their cars… There’s nothing there for you to get and write down and even report. “So, there I was stuck with this crashed up car wondering if this somehow impacted my pregnancy and feeling totally helpless and violated and I had nothing—no recourse against anyone.” To add insult to injury, Berry told Tavis that the paparazzi photographed the undamaged viewpoint of her car being towed from her house and reported that it was being impounded for being parked illegally. “These are the stories you don’t hear about and that’s the frightening part of it for me,” she told Smiley. “Tavis’ airs late-night on PBS. Check local listings or: http://www.pbs.org/kcet/tavissmiley/
You can see the interview in my BELLSHOTS on this page.

‘THINGS WE LOST IN THE FIRE’

things-we-lost.jpg

See the trailer here in Bellshots.

Following the death of her husband, a recent widow — played by Academy Award winning actress Halle Berry — invites her husband’s troubled best friend — Benicio Del Toro — to live with her and her two children. As he gradually turns his life around, he helps the family cope and confront their loss.

Halle Berry sets up the story of Things We Lost In The Fire: “The movie starts off and Audrey is living with the love of her life, her husband. They have two beautiful little children and, you know, they’re in a marriage of 11 years and sort of going about the business of married life. Not a perfect marriage but a wonderful life, no marriage is perfect. And all of a sudden one day, he goes out to get ice cream and never comes back.” See the trailer here in Bellshots!

TUPAC SHAKUR’S FORMER BODYGUARD SAYS HE WAS UNDERCOVER FBI AGENT

tupac.jpg

Former Death Row Records bodyguard Kevin Hackie made a startling admission during a Q&A following a screening of the new movie, Tupac: Assassination – Conspiracy or Revenge? Hackie, who worked as security for Death Row and Tupac Shakur from 1992 to 1996, admitted during the panel discussion in Los Angeles on Tuesday (October 16th) that he was actually an undercover FBI agent and not an informant as had been previously reported.
Hackie made the comment in response to a comment by a Los Angeles Police Department officer who defended the LAPD’s investigation of Shakur’s murder. While the rapper was shot in Las Vegas after a Mike Tyson fight, many believe the murder was actually set in motion in Los Angeles.

Shakur was shot on September 6th, 1996 in a drive-by shooting and he died seven days later on September 13th.

According to Hackie, arrests will be made for Shakur’s murder as well as for that of the Notorious B.I.G.,who was shot and killed in Los Angeles in March of 1997.

During various court proceedings, Hackie has testified that he had “personal knowledge” about B.I.G.’s murder and that people within Death Row offered $25,000 dollars to a law enforcement officer to carry out the slaying.

Hackie has also testified that former officer David Mack and several other LAPD officers worked for Death Row Records. According to Hackie, Shakur was murdered because Marion “Suge” Knight allegedly owed him millions in unpaid royalties.

Hackie has denied some of the statements attributed to him. He points a finger at the legal team of the Notorious B.I.G.’s family because they’re currently involved in a wrongful death lawsuit against the Los Angeles Police Department. Hackie said, “My statements were taken out of context. Some things in there I never even said. They added them in.”

Tupac: Assassination – Conspiracy or Revenge? will be available on DVD on October 23rd

MICHAEL JACKSON’S THRILLER BEING RELEASED

michael-jackson1.jpg

Kanye West, Akon and will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas will lend their vocals to Michael Jackson for the singer’s 25th anniversary edition of his best-selling album, Thriller. Peter Lopez, the former King of Pop’s music attorney, told Fox News that the younger stars are remixing original Thriller tracks “Billie Jean,” “The Girl Is Mine,” “Wanna Be Starting Something” and “Pretty Young Thing” for the CD package. Jackson is currently being sued by the Prince of Bahrain for breach of contract and on Monday (October 15th), a judge ordered him to ante up $175,000 in unpaid lawyer’s fees stemming from his own law firm’s 2006 lawsuit.

BEYONCE DOING CHURCH WORK

beyonce_knowles_tight2.jpg

Singer and actress Beyonce is teaming up with her local church organization in Houston to help the hungry worldwide. The Grammy winner announced that she has teamed with her friend Pastor Rudy Rasmus along with the Global FoodBanking Network and Aidmatrix to launch an international virtual food drive initiative. “I want to encourage people to get involved in the fight against world hunger, in Pastor Rudy’s ongoing mission to help the least among us, and in the work of The Global FoodBanking Network,” said Beyonce in her announcement. “Any help — by donating even a small amount — can make an enormous difference.” Those who wish to participate in the virtual food drive can do so through her website, beyonce.com. Fans can select from a shopping list that is appropriate for each country. Then the Global FoodBanking Network can leverage each donation to acquire more food than you would be able to buy in a grocery store with your donation.

HOLD UP, WAIT A MINUTE!

Mariah Carey’s new album has been delayed. The follow-up to her Grammy-winning The Emancipation of Mimi was originally due out December 4th, but PerezHilton.com is reporting that the release date has been pushed back until February. Jermaine Dupri and Randy Jackson have been working with Carey. E! reports that Carey was spotted with Vanessa Williams’ ex, former basketball player Rick Fox, this week at a Hollywood night spot. A source said, “They sat on top of the banquettes in a corner booth. Then the deejay played Mariah’s ‘Fantasy,’ and the two ‘sat danced’ at the table.” Reps deny that they’re dating.

PRINCE MIGHT BE IN COURT

princefragrance.jpg

Prince is being sued by a man who loaned the singer tech equipment that was never returned. Ian Lewis filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday (October 16th) alleging that Prince took 12 AVID hard drives from him without paying for them, as well as returning a $25,000 computer in “a broken and un-fixable condition.” Lewis is seeking damages to be determined at trial and damages of $1 million.

JOEL OSTEEN SUPPORTER SPEAKS OUT

joel-osteen.jpg

As critics and bloggers take shots at Joel Osteen and his new book this week, Richard Young, who wrote “The Rise of Lakewood Church and Joel Osteen,” came to his defense on Wednesday. “Critics say Osteen lacks biblical references in his books and claim that he preaches prosperity gospel,” said Young. “However, I found nearly 130 scriptural references in ‘Become a Better You,’ Osteen’s newest book.”

NOBEL PRIZE WINNER SAYS BLACKS NOT AS INTELLIGENT AS WHITES

Geneticist James Watson, who shared in the 1962 Nobel Prize in medicine for his work with the team that discovered the structure of DNA, has caused outrage by saying that blacks aren’t as smart as whites. A British museum canceled Friday’s (October 19th) lecture by the 79-year-old American researcher for remarks made to the The Sunday Times ahead of his arrival in England Wednesday (October 17th) to publicize his new book, Avoid Boring People: Lessons from a Life in Science.

Watson told the Times that he’s pessimistic about the future of Africa because, quote, “all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours — whereas all the testing says not really.”

He also said that although there is a natural desire for all human beings to be equal, quote, “people who have to deal with black employees find this is not true.”

This view appears in Watson’s new book as well, in which he writes, “Our wanting to reserve equal powers of reason as some universal heritage of humanity will not be enough to make it so.”

British newspaper The Independent reported that Watson has sparked controversy before, saying in 1997 that a woman should have the right to have an abortion if tests could determine her child would be gay, and suggesting a link between skin color and sex drive, theorizing that black people have higher libidos.

The British government’s skills minister, David Lammy, who is black, told CNN, “It is a shame that a man with a record of scientific distinction should see his work overshadowed by his own irrational prejudices.”

TALL TALENTED ONES RELEASE NEW CD

otis-williams.jpg

The Temptations say that their new album of R&B covers isn’t trying to top the originals, but merely serve as a tribute to their favorite songs. The new set called Back To Front will be released on October 23rd, and already the album’s lead single, a cover of the Bee Gees’ Number One hit “How Deep Is Your Love,” is receiving positive notices.

Plus, Stevie Wonder will head back on the road for a series of dates starting on October 25th in Montreal.

DAMON WAYONS HEADED BACK TO ABC

daymon-wayans.jpg

Damon Wayans, who starred for five seasons on the ABC comedy series “My Wife & Kids,” will return to the network as the lead actor in another family sitcom. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the as-yet-untitled show will be a bit edgier than “Wife” and star the comic as a recent widower who has to take in the 19-year-old stepson he never knew. The project is ABC’s second family comedy in development starring a black comedian after the sitcom deal with Cedric the Entertainer, who begins production on his show next week. Wayans’ project attracted interest from several networks before landing at ABC with a script commitment. Like “Wife,” it will be written and executive produced by Wayans and Don Reo. Both had been looking to collaborate on a new project since “Wife” was cancelled in April 2005.

SHERRI SHEPARD GETTING BUSY

sherri-shepard-view.jpg

Comic actress Sherri Shepherd, recently confirmed as a co-host of The View, is in talks to develop a half-hour comedy for The CW that’s loosely based on her own life experiences. The untitled series will revolve around a married woman who discovers her husband has been cheating on her and has an illegitimate child. She agrees to let the child and her mother move in with the family, according to Variety. The scenario is taken from Shepherd’s own marital difficulties, which included discovering that her husband had fathered a child out of wedlock. Shepherd has spoken openly about the situation on The View. Shepherd will star and produce the sitcom with ABC Studios-based producers Nina Wass and Gene Stein. Will & Grace writer Dave Flebotte is set to script the project.

WHITNEY HOUSTON BIOGRAPHY AIRS ON BIO CHANNEL

whitney-houston.jpg

Singer Whitney Houston is profiled in a new special edition of Biography, on the Bio Channel. The program looks at the life of the internationally renowned pop star, including her success via recordings, concerts, and film, and her private life and struggles. The program looks at her marriage to entertainer Bobby Brown in 1992, their tumultuous relationship and rampant rumors of drug abuse, and her subsequent divorce and road to a revived image and career.

In this clip from Biography: Whitney Houston, Entertainment Weekly staff writer Margeaux Watson discusses Whitney Houston’s famous pedigree: “I think Whitney Houston grew up with a lot of pressure to follow in the footsteps of her mom, Cissy, who was a hugely famous gospel singer. Dionne Warwick was her cousin and then Aretha Franklin was her godmother. It’s like, with that pedigree you kind of have to stand up and deliver.”

In another clip, Whitney’s infamous denial of being a crack user is examined:(narrator) “In 2002, Whitney appeared on Primetime with Diane Sawyer and discussed alcohol, drug, and marital issues. She basically admitted to taking an assortment of drugs, including cocaine and pills.” (Julie Dam of People magazine) “This is famously when she told Diane Sawyer that ‘crack is wack,’ and she would never take crack cocaine ’cause she’s too wealthy for that.”

C-MURDER RETRIAL SET FOR FEBRUARY

c-murder.jpg

Rapper C-Murder, whose real name is Corey Miller, will get a second chance to prove his innocence in February. Allhiphop.com reports that Judge Martha Sassone set a trial date of February 11th for the rapper’s second degree murder trial. If found guilty, C-Murder faces a mandatory life sentence.

C-Murder is facing murder charges for allegedly shooting and killing 16-year-old Steve Thomas at a nightclub in 2002. The rapper was initially found guilty and sentenced to life but the verdict was overturned after it was discovered that prosecutors withheld information about the criminal background of some of their witnesses.

The rapper was freed in 2006 and placed under house arrest as he prepared for the retrial. Even if C-Murder is found innocent, he’s still facing two attempted murder charges for an unrelated incident in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The rapper allegedly attempted to shoot a club owner and bouncer after they wouldn’t let him into their club. His gun jammed twice before he fled the scene.

The rapper’s brother, Master P, shared his thoughts on his brother getting a second chance after C-Murder’s original conviction was overturned. He said: “Yeah, he’s out of jail and, you know, man, that just goes to show you, man, sometimes you got to have faith. You know, we got a lot of innocent people in jail right now. So, you know, this is definitely a great opportunity for our family and C to prove his innocence there.”

NAS FEELS THE HEAT AFTER ANNOUNCING NEW ALBUM TITLE

nas.jpg

Rapper Nas is taking some heat after announcing that he plans to title his new album N***a. The rapper wanted to use the title for his last album but he decided to title it Hip Hop Is Dead, instead. SOHH.com reports that Nas’ label Def Jam Records isn’t pleased with the rapper’s decision. A source close to Island Def Jam president Antonio “LA” Reid told FOX News, “There is no album released by Nas on the release schedule at this point. And they would be unlikely to release an album with that title. How would that look at Wal-Mart?”

Reverend Jesse Jackson shared his thoughts on the proposed album title. He said, “The title using the ‘N’ word is morally offensive and socially distasteful. Nas has the right to degrade and denigrate in the name of free speech, but there is no honor in it. Radio and television stations have no obligation to play it and self-respecting people have no obligation to buy it. I wish he would use his talents to lift up and inspire, not degrade, making a mockery of racism.”

NAACP spokesman Richard McIntire also chimed in. He said, “We will not support and we will not continually be assailed by other individuals who want to use that type of term in our presence. This has gone on long enough.”

Interestingly enough, Don Imus’ camp also offered an opinion on the album title. Imus’ lawyer, Martin Garbus, wrote in an email, “It’s a good thing. Words like that should be deprived of their meanings, and then they can’t hurt.”

In related news, Nas will release a Greatest Hits album on November 6th.

OPRAH WINFREY REVEALS THYROID STRUGGLE

oprah.jpg

Media mogul Oprah Winfrey reveals that she has been struggling with a thyroid condition since the spring that has caused fatigue and weight gain. The 53-year-old talk show host comes clean about her health problems in the October issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, and also mentioned the condition on Monday’s (October 15th) broadcast.

Winfrey explained that she was feeling sluggish at the end of her talk show season back in May. The diagnosis: an out-of-balance thyroid. “My body was turning on me,” she says in O. “First hyperthyroidism, which sped up my metabolism and left me unable to sleep for days. (Most people lose weight. I didn’t.)”

“Then hypothyroidism, which slowed down my metabolism and made me want to sleep all the time. (Most people gain weight. I did! Twenty pounds!)” she added.

While hyperthyroidism can cause a fast heartbeat, among other symptoms, hypothyroidism, the opposite condition, can result in fatigue and weakness. Winfrey says she was so exhausted and stressed that she took a month off to regain her health in Hawaii.

Winfrey also referenced the thyroid condition on Monday’s program on women’s health issues featuring physician and author Dr. Christiane Northrup. “It’s an issue we all share in common,” she noted.

JOHN LEGEND SET TO HOMESCHOOL HIS FIRST ARTIST

john-legend.jpg

Singer, songwriter, and producer John Legend is sharing the wealth. The multiple Grammy winner plans to launch his HomeSchool label through Atlantic with the February 12th release of the debut CD by signee Estelle. The singer’s album will be titled Shine, and will feature the production talents of Wyclef Jean, Swizz Beats, Mark Ronson, and Will.I.Am. as well as Legend himself. The project also features guest appearances by Kanye West and Cee-Lo.

Estelle, a British singer, rapper, and songwriter, will release a first single titled “Wait A Minute (Just A Touch).”

Legend is currently working on songs for his next solo CD. Recently, he noted that many of the songs on his current set Once Again explore indecision and uncertainty, including the tune “Heaven Only Knows.” He explained: “The lyrics are about a couple that are just trying to recapture the magic, you know, that they had originally, but kinda reconciling and getting through a rough patch they’re going through as a couple, and they don’t know how they’re going to do it exactly, they’re still uncertain about it. Which a lot of my songs are about kinda that uncertainty, whatever, whether it’s dating relationships or your relationship with God. A lot of my songs are about uncertainty.”

FOXY STILL DIVALICIOUS

foxy-brown1.jpg

Rapper Foxy Brown may be behind bars but she’s still a diva. The Associated Press reports that the rapper twice refused to board a corrections’ department bus on Friday (October 12th). Assistant District Attorney Robert Isdith told New York’s Daily News, “The first time she wanted to change her clothes, put on some makeup and make herself prettier.” The rapper, who is serving a year behind bars for violating the terms of her probation, was due in Brooklyn Supreme Court for her arraignment stemming from a July 31st incident in which she allegedly hit her neighbor with a Blackberry cell phone during an argument. The rapper’s court appearance has been rescheduled for Tuesday (October 16th). Brown will be handcuffed and forced on the bus if she refuses to board again.

In addition to talking about the creation of her brand-new CD, As I Am, in the article, Keys opens up about confronting her estranged father and her personal struggle with depression. Her issues led her on a journey of self-discovery in Africa, where she also served as a humanitarian ambassador. “I had to learn to let go,” says Keys, adding that she had to “pray at least three times a day” during her search for self.

CHILD NUMBER FIVE ON THE WAY FOR LAURYN HILL

lauryn-hill.jpg

Singer Lauryn Hill, who has puzzled fans and the media with inconsistent behavior and head-scratching performances over the past year, is reportedly pregnant once again. The online blog Young, Black And Fabulous is reporting that the tyke will be baby number five for L-Boogie with her on-again-off-again partner, Rohan Marley. Though the couple had split after their fourth child, Hill reportedly sought solace with the Bob Marley scion after getting all the bad concert reviews earlier this year. Rohan — who has two other children from a previous marriage — is said to have moved to Ethiopia and is not in Hill’s life. Both Wyclef Jean and Prazrakiel “Pras” Michel blame Hill’s behavior for the failed Fugees reunion project that was originally slated for this year.

BUDDIES TURNING ON O.J.

oj-simpson.jpg

Charles Cashmore, one of the five men accused of joining O.J. Simpson in a September 13th hotel room raid of two sports memorabilia dealers, will plead guilty to a reduced charge and testify that guns were involved in the theft of sports collectibles. Cashmore’s attorney, Edward Miley, said Friday (October 12th) that Cashmore — a Las Vegas bartender and DJ — will testify that Walter Alexander and Michael McClinton had guns when they entered the room with the former football star. He will plead guilty to being an accessory to robbery, a felony that could get him up to five years in prison. Simpson and the others are charged with kidnapping, armed robbery, assault, burglary and conspiracy. Simpson also faces a felony charge of coercion.

THE SALT AND PEPA SHOW RETURNS TO VH1

salt-and-pepa.jpg

Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandy “Pepa” Denton reunite for VH1′s new reality program The Salt-N-Pepa Show. The show follows the current relationship between the two pioneering rap stars, who retired the group in 2002. While the “Push It” duo have agreed to give the music biz one more shot, they have some serious baggage. According to VH1′s notes, Salt is a devout Christian living a quiet married life. Pepa is still a party girl, still in love with the glory days. Salt is angry because she thinks she did all the work in the group and was never appreciated. Pep’s still angry that Salt broke up the group — and that she did it by calling Pep in the middle of a pedicure! The ladies have never before spoken to each other about why they broke up in the first place and their feelings about it. The show will follow the pair to see if they can overcome their lifestyle differences and put the past behind them.

AMERICAN IDOL VIOLATES CHILD LABOR LAWS?

american-idol-logo.jpg

The company that runs the national American Idol tour has reportedly violated child labor laws in New York State, by not securing the permits necessary for underage singers Jordin Sparks and Sanjaya Malakar to perform. The company, 19 Touring LLC, must pay $5,000 in fines after the New York State Labor Department cited them with 16 different violations. Both Sparks and Malakar were both 17 years old during the tour’s five New York concert dates in August and September. New York law requires employers who use child performers to register with the state so they can be properly monitored. In related news, ex-Idol contestant Corey Clark pleaded guilty to felony harassment after placing phone calls to his father-in-law, which was a violation of a court order prohibiting the singer from contacting him and other members of his family. He faces up to two years in jail and a maximum fine of $150,000.

CHAKA KHAN LOVED RECORDING DUET WITH MARY J. BLIGE

HEAR AND SEE AN EXCERPT ON “BELLSHOT VIDEOS” ON THIS PAGE

chaka-kahn.jpg

Veteran singer Chaka Khan says she really enjoyed recording a duet titled “Disrespectful” with fellow Grammy winner Mary J. Blige. The tune is the urban radio single from Khan’s brand new album, Funk This!, which she recorded with producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis.

Khan says it’s the first successful duet she’s recorded with Blige after several tries. She explained: “Well, Mary J. started writing this song with Jam and Lewis before I came into the studio and they played it for me and I was floored by it, I said, ‘Oh this is great.’ And Mary have been and I were working on some duets, in fact we recorded a duet that never went anywhere, and we weren’t thrilled with it. So this song, she loved it, I loved it, and so … it’s just as simple as that.”

In addition to the Blige duet, Funk This includes other original tunes as well as Khan’s versions of some favorites, including Joni Mitchell’s “Ladies Man,” Jimi Hendrix’s “Castles Made Of Sand,” Prince’s “Sign O’ The Times,” and a tune recorded by Dee Dee Bridgewater, “Foolish Fool.”

Khan is on a national concert tour. Next January, she will also join the cast of the Broadway musical The Color Purple as Sofia.

COMMON AND KANYE WINNERS AT BET AWARDS

common.jpg

The second annual BET Hip Hop Awards went off without a hitch on Saturday (October 13th), despite the fact that leading nominee T.I. was unable to attend following a weapons arrest earlier in the day. T.I., who was nominated for nine awards, was arrested in an Atlanta area parking lot as he allegedly waited to purchase machine guns.

T.I. won two awards, including CD of the Year, which he shared with Common. The Associated Press reports that while accepting the award, Common said, “I salute my guy T.I., who also won, wherever he is.”

In addition to T.I., Common also took home two awards including CD of the year and lyricist of the year. Kanye West was the evening’s other big winner. The rapper won best live performance and best hip-hop video.

Interestingly, when West took the stage to accept the best hip hop video award, he said that UGK should have won for their video, “International Players Anthem” featuring OutKast. West said, “I didn’t deserve this award above them. They do instead of me.” OutKast’s Big Boi was quick to set West straight. He said, “You worked too hard for this. No, you deserve it.”

In T.I.’s absence, comedian and show host Katt Williams took the stage with Wyclef Jean to perform T.I.’s “You Know What It Is.” Busta Rhymes and Alfamega took the stage to perform T.I.’s “Hurt.”

The BET Hip Hop Awards will air on Wednesday (October 17th) at 8 pm ET.

DIDDY INVOLVED IN SCUFFLE

diddy.jpg

Sean “Diddy” Combs has gotten into his share of trouble over the years and it looks like the mogul may be in some hot water again after getting into a physical confrontation at a New York City nightclub early Saturday morning (October 13th). The New York Post’s Page Six reports that Diddy allegedly got into a physical altercation with an acquaintance, Steven Acevedo, over a woman at New York City’s Kiosk.

According to Acevedo, he and Diddy exchanged words and went their separate ways in the nightclub but when he ran back into the mogul, Diddy hit him with a two punch combination while yelling, “I’ll kill you, punk.”

Acevedo, who ended up with a bloody nose and a fat lip, says one of the mogul’s bodyguards flashed a gun when he attempted to get Combs back.

Combs hasn’t been arrested or charged. Authorities are hoping to get a statement from him soon.

In related news, Combs is still promoting his Press Play album. He recently released the song and video “Through The Pain (Dear Kim)” featuring Mario Winans. Combs explained his musical development and growth. He said: “As far as all the stuff about the bling and the money, all of that stuff it was a little tired and cliche and a little corny if I was to go back to that, you know what I’m sayin’? It would be almost like a caricature of myself. It would be almost me making a mockery of myself if I just went down that lane and didn’t show like my growth.”

USHER AND TAMEKA SPEAK OUT IN ‘ESSENCE’

usher-and-fiance.jpg

Singer Usher and his pregnant wife Tameka Foster appear on the cover of the November issue of Essence magazine. In the feature article, the couple discuss how they fell in love, their hopes for the future, and dealing with the media and fan reaction. “It was like, wow. (Getting married) and having a child is something that everyone should celebrate,” Usher tells Essence about the backlash response to his nuptials. “What’s happened to us as a culture and a people? I’m not ignorant, so I’m not going to go out there and lash out.” He added, “Ours is not a typical love story, but it is a true one.”

Meanwhile, the newlyweds were spotted on a shopping trip in Miami Beach late last week. According to the Miami Herald, the couple spent more than an hour at Atrium boutique on Collins Avenue on Thursday (October 11th).

According to the Herald’s source, ”The couple was adorable, and Usher held her hand the entire time they were in the store.”

Foster did display her discriminating side. Her R&B singer husband had reportedly visited the store a day earlier to buy presents for his wife, but when he returned the next day with Foster, she exchanged the items for a Kritik sweat suit, bathing suits and flip-flops.

There is no word on when Usher will deliver the long-awaited follow-up to his smash 2004 Confessions CD.
