BEYONCE APPEARANCE ADDS TO ISSUES IN ETHIOPIA
Beyonce has caused turmoil among students at a top religious college in Ethiopia after she met with the school’s patriarch in advance of her two-hour concert last month in Addis Ababa, reports the Associated Press. The 26-year-old singer’s visit with Ethiopian patriarch Abune Paulos has been added to a list or reasons why students at Theological College of the Holy Trinity began a hunger strike on Sunday. Daniel Techale, a 28-year-old alumnus who still lives at the school, said students were also protesting the close ties between the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and the government, alleged restrictions on their speech and food in the cafeteria. But Techale says students were also upset over the Beyonce-Paulos meeting.
STAR JONES TALKS ABOUT LATEST SCANDAL
The drama between Star Jones and the Detroit nonprofit Full and Fabulous snowballed Monday with the TV host addressing the situation on her Court TV show. Jones explained her reasons for pulling out of the scheduled speaking engagement to about 1500 overweight teen girls in Fat and Fabulous. Meanwhile, some of the girls vented their frustration with Jones on the group’s Web site.
As previously reported, the group’s director Sharon Dumas-Pugh is planning a breach of contract lawsuit against Jones, claiming the Court TV host took their $17,000 deposit on a $25,000 speaking fee, got first class upgrades for two airline tickets to Detroit that were provided by the group, and stayed in a five-star hotel – but refused to show up at the speaking engagement when Full and Fabulous was unable to pay the balance of her fee. According to the New York Daily News, Star instead went to the Super Bowl, a fashion show and arranged her own book-signing at a nearby Borders. TMZ.com has aired video of Jones defending her decisions. The former member of “The View” said she gave Full and Fabulous until a day before the scheduled event to make good on the balance. When they couldn’t come up with the money, she decided not to participate, Jones said. On her Court TV show Monday, Jones continued to accuse Full and Fabulous of orchestrating “a nasty shakedown.” Jones said she received $10,000 from the group before her scheduled appearance, but never got the $15,000 balance she was owed. Jones also claims that she didn’t get “the level” hotel that she requested for her stay in Detroit, nor was any ground transportation provided.
HOW CLOSE IS MICHAEL TO LOOSING NEVERLAND
Fox411 columnist Roger Friedman wrote Tuesday of a reported January 19 deadline for Michael Jackson to pay back a $23 million loan before he loses his Neverland Ranch. Friedman says Jackson is close to securing a deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing to refinance his loan with Fortress Investment Group, which totals over $300 million. However, Sony “will not be getting involved in a separate loan Fortress made to Jackson for Neverland,” says Friedman. “That loan, under a Fortress entity called DBGC, is secured by Neverland for $23 million. On Oct. 22, as I first reported, Jackson defaulted on that loan. If a deal can be worked out, Barclay’s Bank would buy the loan from Fortress,” Friedman added.” If Jackson doesn’t pay Fortress, Neverland would be sold at auction to the highest bidder.”
TEMPTATIONS GOING BACK TO FRONT
With 2006’s Grammy-nominated Reflections, The Temptations performed the Motown classics they always loved but never had the chance to previously record. Now, with Back To Front (New Door Records/UMe), released October 23, 2007, you’ll find these Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees and one of the most popular and enduring singing groups of all time performing some of the biggest Pop and R&B songs in history. For Back To Front, their 48th album of new recordings, and second for New Door Records/UMe, The Temptations put their incomparable stamp on such classics as “Never Never Gonna Give Ya Up” (the ageless Barry White smash), Sam and Dave’s seminal “Hold On, I’m Comin’,” the Staple Singers’ self-assuring “Respect Yourself,” the Bee Gees’ monumental “How Deep Is Your Love” and the timeless standard “Let It Be Me” as well as “(Every Time I Turn Around) Back In Love Again” (popularized by L.T.D. with Jeffrey Osborne). Also featured are “Wake Up Everybody” (the crossover giant from Philly soul legends Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes featuring Teddy Pendergrass), “I’m In Love,” “Minute By Minute” (the Doobie Brothers’ hit), “Don’t Ask My Neighbors” and “Love Ballad,” (made popular by jazz giant George Benson).
