BARACK OBAMA EVENT SOLD OUT

barack-obama3.jpg

The Barack Obama event at the Target Center, Minneapolis on Saturday is effectively sold out, but there is a waiting list for those still interested in attending. There are also a very limited number of paper tickets still available at ticket distribution locations across the state. People can add their name to a waiting list, however, there is no guarantee that anyone from the wait list will be able to attend the event, though. If you cannot get tickets to the rally, the entire event will be carried LIVE on kare11.com Saturday. The free event sold out in less than 24 hours after tickets became available. In meetings I’ve attended lately, Minnesotans are talking about taking an active part in the upcoming Super Tuesday Caucus in the state. This is an intersting time in which we live. For the first time a female or a black male has a strong shot at occupying the White House. Where do you stand on the issue? Will you be a part of of shaping history?

RAP ALBUM FOR COSBY

bill-cosby2.jpg

Bill Cosby – a staunch critic of some rap music – is set to release a Hip-Hop album called State of Emergency, which will be a sanitized, issue-oriented CD. Sources told AllHipHop.com that the actor, comedian and philanthropist will address issues like proper parenting, teen pregnancy, drug abuse, Black-on-Black crime and the dropout rate in America’s high schools. Cosby’s album will not contain any profane language, nor will it offer any denigrating comments towards women. State of Emergency would be the 35th album for the legendary comedian, actor, who released his first album Bill Cosby is a Very Funny Fellow in 1963.

KANYE WEST PUTTING TOGETHER ‘GLOW IN THE DARK’ TOUR LINE-UP

kanye-in-shades.jpg

Grammy Award winner Kanye West is gearing up for his Glow In The Dark tour and he announced on his blog that Rihanna, Lupe Fiasco and N.E.R.D. will be joining him as opening acts. West has consistently been a success on the road and he explained why he appears to be the exception when it comes to hip hop acts. West told Billboard.com, “A lot of people want to be too cool onstage. I do an hour-and-a-half with no hype man, running around onstage. The touring can only get better because the longer a song’s out, the more people get into it.”

With West, Fiasco, and Pharrell Williams on board for the tour, it shouldn’t come as a surprise if they perform as their super group, Child Rebel Soldier (CRS). The trio has only released one song so far, “Us Placers.”

No tour dates have been announced for the Glow In the Dark tour.

In related news, N.E.R.D. is working on a new album, N.3.R.D. The group plans to put it out later this year.

diddyjan.jpg

Sean “Diddy” Combs may already have two reality shows on MTV. He stars in Making The Band and serves as an executive producer of Run’s House. Now the mogul is getting his own Apprentice-like show on VH-1, to find a new personal assistant, according to SOHH.com. The untitled show will follow 20 contestants as they do whatever it takes to land the job.

Open casting calls are scheduled for New York City, Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles, Boston and Miami. To find out more information and to apply please visit workfordiddy.com.

In related news, so far Diddy has not launched a new Vote or Die campaign but the mogul strongly believes that the youth culture will play a strong role in deciding who the next president will be. In the past, the mogul explained: “We are the true leaders of the youth culture and we’re trying to make sure that voting is a necessity this year because ironically we will make the decision, the forgotten ones, the 40 million minorities and youth voters will make the decision on who the next President of the United States is. Mark my words.”

MICHAEL JACKSON TO PERFORM AT GRAMMYS? PEPSI COMMERCIAL?

michael-jackson1.jpg

Fox.com columnist Roger Friedman is reporting that Michael Jackson has severed ties with his rep Raymone Bain, and has temporarily removed his nanny Grace Rwaramba from his house because she’s germy. “She’s sick, she’s got something, and Michael hates germs,” a source is quoted as saying. “So Grace is out. She’s over at her luxury condo in Las Vegas while Michael and his kids remain at the Palms casino.” As for Jackson’s longtime publicist/manager Bain, Friedman says she has also left the building, but she’ll deny it “to anyone who asks.” Friedman says Jackson’s sudden lack of management puts serious doubt on new reports that he will join Kanye West, Akon, Fergie and will.i.am to perform songs from his upcoming “Thriller” remix album on the Grammy telecast. Meanwhile, the New York Post is reporting that Jackson will promote the Feb. 12 release of his “Thriller” remix album in a Pepsi commercial that will air during the Super Bowl on Sunday. The spot will be followed by a “major TV, radio, online and outdoor advertising campaign,” according to the Post.

EDWARDS ENDS PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN

john-edwards.jpg

Democrat John Edwards bowed out of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination on Wednesday, saying it was time to step aside “so that history can blaze its path” in a campaign now left to Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama. “With our convictions and a little backbone we will take back the White House in November,” said Edwards, ending his second campaign in a hurricane-ravaged section of New Orleans where he began it more than a year ago. Edwards said Clinton and Obama had both pledged that “they will make ending poverty central to their campaign for the presidency.” “This is the cause of my life and I now have their commitment to engage in this cause,” he said before a small group of supporters. He was joined by his wife Elizabeth and his three children, Cate, Emma Claire and Jack. It was the second time Edwards sought the Democratic presidential nomination. Four years ago he was the vice presidential running mate on a ticket headed by John Kerry.

KILPATRICK HIRES NEW CHIEF OF STAFF

kandia_milton008-headshot-med.jpgchristine_beattykwame_kilpatrick2006-med-wide.jpg

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick named a new chief of staff Tuesday, a day after the woman who previously held the post resigned amid allegations that she and the mayor lied under oath about an affair. Kandia Milton, who has served as deputy chief of staff and liaison to Detroit’s City Council, was appointed to Christine Beatty’s job, Kilpatrick announced in a written statement released Tuesday. In a letter to Kilpatrick that was released by his office on Monday, Beatty said she could no longer effectively carry out her duties. A prosecutor launched an investigation last week into the allegations, which surfaced when the Detroit Free Press detailed sexally-tinged text messages between Kilpatrick and Beatty. Both Kilpatrick and Beatty testified in a trial last summer that they did not have a physical relationship in 2002 and 2003, when the messages were reportedly sent. The 14,000 messages examined by the newspaper reveal the two carried on a flirty dialogue about where to rendezvous and how to hide their various hookups. A conviction of lying under oath can bring up to 15 years’ imprisonment. Meanwhile, Kilpatrick, who hasn’t been seen or heard publicly since last week, will break his silence on the unfolding scandal, in a speech this evening at 7:30pm from his church, Greater Emanuel Institutional Church. It was also announced that Detroit public radio station, WDET, will carry the address live. “There will be no audience. There will be no reporters allowed inside. There will be no still photography allowed inside. The mayor will not do any interviews,” according to James Canning, the mayor’s spokesman.

WHO LEFT THE GATE OPEN!

diddy.jpg

Just when Cheri Dennis started to receive the long over due attention over at Bad Boy via the release of In and Out of Love on February 26th, Diddy pulls a fast one. Yup, you guessed it. He signed yet another R&B chanteuse to his label.
To the surprise of many– including Cheri herself– Jonelle Monae, a former Purple Ribbon Allstar is now Bad Boy’s newest princess. What a slap in the face.
“I’m still under the bus. I’m sorry I can’t come up for that question,” says Cheri facetiously when asked about her new label mate. “But, I think she’s phenomenal. She used to be signed to Big Boi [of Outkast]. And that’s all I’ll say about that.”

MY DRINK AND MY TWO STEP!

karrine-superhead-steffans.jpg

It appears Karrine “Superhead” Steffans is still earning her reputation as a beauty known for her brains. The video vixen turned business woman put her skills to work on ex-boyfriend Bobby Brown– this time there was no happy ending.
Steffans not only took Brown in after his ex-wife Whitney Houston kicked the King of R&B to the curb, but she also upgraded him with a new wardrobe and let him style her new Benz.
However their brief, public affair ended when Brown allegedly blew off a very important business meeting brokered by Steffans.
“I got Harper Collins interested in a book deal for him… (but) he got too drunk to go to the meeting. I was trying to help him put his life back together. He drank a whole bottle of Patron (tequila) the day before and missed the meeting, and made me look like an idiot. I was doing more than anybody else was doing.”
Soulman says… No harm, no foul! The longer he waits to pen a book, the more money he can collect. This incident just re-ups his bad boy image.

FAST AND FURIOUS!

keyshia-cole.jpg

The pressure is on for Keyshia Cole. No, not because the final season of her hit BET reality TV show, “The Way It Is,” will reveal if she and her once dysfunctional family was worth the bullet.
It seems that Geffen has requested that Keyshia get the ball rolling on her third album, even though she just released her highly acclaimed sophomore CD less than four months ago.
“I’m writing down ideas now, just what I feel like the album should be about,” Keyshia tells SOHH exclusively. “This is the first time I’ve actually done that so that should be fun. They want it out by Christmas.”

COME OUT, COME OUT WHEREVER YOU ARE!

mariah-carey.jpg

It’s official, Mariah Carey is carrying on. After Island Def Jam staged dual listening sessions for Mimi’s highly anticipated follow up to the Emancipation and label mate Janet Jackson’s Discipline, fans of Dupri’s favorite diva were sent into a tizzy at the notion that new music would hit the airwaves shortly thereafter.

TERRELL MUST PAY

terrell-owens.jpg

Terrell Owens should set aside part of his roster bonus from Dallas to pay his old team a debt. An arbitrator ruled in favor of the Philadelphia Eagles last Friday on a grievance that was filed by the NFL players’ union on Owens’ behalf in 2005. A team spokesman said the Eagles would not comment. Owens’ agent, Drew Rosenhaus, did not return a phone message. The union disputed the Eagles’ effort to recover $1.725 million of the $2.3 million signing bonus the team paid the wide receiver when it signed him to a seven-year, $48.97 million deal in 2004. Owens was kicked off the team seven games into the 2005 season for a series of infractions, including repeated criticism of quarterback Donovan McNabb and lashing out against management. He was suspended four games without pay and the team withheld his final five paychecks, totaling $955,880. That means Owens still owes the Eagles $769,120. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said this month he plans to pay Owens a $3 million roster bonus, so the All-Pro should have some extra cash to pay the Eagles. The Philadelphia Inquirer, citing a league source, first reported arbitrator Shyam Das ruled against Owens. An NFL spokesman confirmed the report to The Associated Press.

CHRIS BROWN DATING RIHANNA?

chris_brown.jpg

Singer and budding actor Chris Brown is reportedly dating fellow teen singer Rihanna. The two have been spotted out and about in public a few times by the media and have appeared in photos together. The New York Daily News reported that Brown and the “Umbrella” singer were seen together visiting Barneys in New York City following Brown’s performance last Wednesday (January 23rd) night at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Brown was previously quoted as having a crush on the Barbados beauty, while Rihanna has been linked with several celebrities over the past year, including actors Shia LeBouef and Josh Hartnett. Brown, who is continuing a national tour, is promoting his sophomore set Exclusive, featuring the single “With You.” He is also featured in the February issue of Men’s Health to discuss men’s fashion. Rihanna was recently named among Us Magazine’s list of Ten Most Powerful Girls in Hollywood as a “hitmaker.” She has a number of Grammy Award nominations this year, with three for her tune “Umbrella” and one for her duet with Ne-Yo, “Hate That I Love You.”

Lopez is pictured as Princess Jasmine, and her husband, Marc Anthony, is Aladdin. They are seen soaring through the Arabian night with Whoopi Goldberg playing the Genie who pushes them among the stars. The scene from Aladdin is called “Where a whole new world awaits.” Lopez loved taking part in the shoot. She said, “It’s unbelievable…a modern princess and the guy with the flying carpet…and the idea of maybe in the future my children seeing me and Marc as Jasmine and Aladdin…I think that would be pretty cool.” Since January 2007, Leibovitz has featured several celebrities in the portrait series, including Beyonce, David Beckham, Scarlett Johansson and Rachel Weisz in scenes playing out their Disney fantasies. Lopez and Anthony are expecting their first baby together this year.

LIL WAYNE SAYS HE ISN’T GOING TO REHAB

lil_wayne1.jpg

Rapper Lil Wayne was arrested last week in Yuma, Arizona, and charged with felony possession of a narcotic for sale, possession of dangerous drugs, and possession of drug paraphernalia. The charges stem from an arrest on January 22nd at a U.S. border patrol checkpoint. A canine unit helped to discover three ounces of marijuana, over an ounce of cocaine and over an ounce of Ecstasy on the rapper’s tour bus. The rapper was later released on $10,185 bail. Lil Wayne was right back on the road touring after his arrest and over the weekend he told a Virginia crowd that going to rehab is out of the question.

PAULA ABDUL DANCES HER BUTT OFF

paula-abdul-108.jpg

Paula Abdul received mixed reviews after taping a performance set to air during the upcoming Super Bowl. Fans told PerezHilton.com that the American Idol judge made them wait up to six hours to catch a glimpse of her dance moves after reportedly suffering a routine “meltdown.” Although some praised the routine, others were so peeved by the unnecessary delay that they swore off American Idol forever. Fans were in agreement that Abdul lip synched the premiere performance of “Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow,” her new single off fellow Idol judge Randy Jackson’s upcoming album. Despite the absence of live vocals, one fan said the former Laker Girl “danced her little ass off” after being lifted and flung into the air by five men. She opened with a clip of her 1990’s hit “Forever Your Girl” before launching into a “fabulous” performance of the new single. Fans who stayed long enough to witness Paula in action assured PerezHilton.com that Abdul’s comeback is definitely going to be a success.
Ryan Seacrest, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson will take part in the first-ever Super Bowl red carpet pregame. They’ll get things going on Sunday (February 3rd), at 2 p.m. ET, interviewing celebrities attending the big game in Glendale, Arizona. Abdul is expected to give a rare musical performance, singing her new song “Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow.” Her fellow American Idol judge, Jackson, is expected to dance along to the single as part of a pre-taped segment.

The 26-year-old was delighted to announce a solo tour in autumn last year – because she could finally keep the tour bus as organized as she pleased.
She says, “They were both slobs! They would come on to the tour bus and take their shoes off, and I was the one who would say, ‘Put your shoes in the corner!’ I have OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) tendencies, so I drove them totally nuts.”

BERNICE KING TURNED RAPPER

bernice-king.jpg

Some say when they saw Bernice King, daughter of slain civil right leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., at the King Center in Atlanta, she’d added something a little different to her normal presentation. It seems Dr. King has added rap to her talk when she invited a young rapper on stage to rap to the song, I Am King. Witnessess say after a short time, Dr. King joined in the rap and was acutally pretty good. The event was held to honor her father during King Day activities.

DETROIT MAYOR’S AIDE TO STEP DOWN

kwame-kilpatrick-detroit-mayor.jpgchristine-beatty.jpg

Christine Beatty, Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s chief of staff, said Monday she is resigning amid allegations that she and the mayor lied under oath about an affair. In a letter to Kilpatrick that was released by his office, Beatty said she believes she can no longer effectively carry out her duties. Her resignation takes effect Feb. 8. “I painfully regret the devastation that the recent reports have caused to the citizens of Detroit, to my co workers, to the Mayor’s family and to my family and friends,” Beatty wrote in the letter. Kilpatrick spokesman James Canning said the mayor’s office had no comment. A prosecutor launched an investigation last week into the allegations, which came to light when the Detroit Free Press reported details of steamy text messages between Beatty and Kilpatrick. Both Kilpatrick and Beatty testified in a trial last summer that they did not have a physical relationship in 2002 and 2003, when the messages were reportedly sent. The 14,000 messages examined by the newspaper reveal the two carried on a flirty, sometimes sexually explicit dialogue about where to meet and how to conceal their numerous trysts. “I’m madly in love with you,” Kilpatrick wrote on Oct. 3, 2002. “I hope you feel that way for a long time,” Beatty replied. “In case you haven’t noticed, I am madly in love with you, too!” On Oct. 16, 2002, Kilpatrick wrote Beatty: “I’ve been dreaming all day about having you all to myself for 3 days. Relaxing, laughing, talking, sleeping and making love.” The pair testified in a case involving a lawsuit filed by two police officers who alleged they were fired for investigating claims that the mayor used his security unit to cover up extramarital affairs. The lawsuit ended with the jury awarding $6.5 million to the two officers. The payout eventually grew to more than $8.5 million.

SNOOP DOGG VOLUNTEERS TO WRITE NEW THEME SONG FOR SOAP OPERA

snoop-dogg.jpg

Rapper and actor Snoop Dogg loves ABC’s soap opera One Life To Live. After hearing that Mary J. Blige taped a two-day performance and appearance on the show, the rapper put a call into the show’s producers and volunteered to come up with a new theme song for the show. The show’s supervising music director, Paul Glass, told the New York Post’s Page Six, “I’m a huge fan of Snoop and I’d love to hear what he’d come up with.” In related news, while Snoop Dogg may be affiliated with Los Angeles’ Crips street gang, the rapper is all about peace. He explained: “I dream about peace in the world, you know what I’m sayin’? Just non-violent, you know no wars, no deaths, no accidents, you know positive stuff like that where it can be happy all the time ’cause that’s how I like to get down.”

HEAVY D IS WORKING ON A REGGAE ALBUM

heavy-d.jpg

Rapper Heavy D performed for the first time in over 10 years on Sunday night (January 27th) at the House of Blues in Los Angeles. The rapper was joined on the bill by Doug E. Fresh and Big Daddy Kane in what may be a warm up for an all out Mic Check Tour featuring all three acts. Heavy D told Allhiphop.com, “Right now it’s still an if. There’s no definite dates, but there’s a lot of offers. We’re just trying to make the right decision, based on everybody’s schedule. But chances are that’s what we’re gonna do.”
Big Daddy Kane added, “I haven’t performed with Heavy D since like 1989. That makes it and the whole vibe that’s been built around it different.” Heavy D, who a few years ago flirted with a comeback through Diddy’s Bad Boy Entertainment label, is currently working on a reggae album. The rapper said, “I’ve always been involved with the Reggae scene, underground; and it was always something I was always involved in.” Heavy D has spent the past decade pursuing an acting career and his credits include: The Cider House Rules, New Jersey Drive, and Life.

BEYONCE TO PLAY ETTA JAMES IN UPCOMING FILM

beyonce_knowles_tight2.jpg

Singer Beyonce, who played a Diana Ross-like girl group lead singer in the 2006 film Dreamgirls, may have lined up a new musical film role. She has reportedly been cast as feisty blues singer Etta James in the new ’50s-era film Cadillac Records. James, known for her ballad “At Last,” also had a string of up-tempo early ’60s hits like “Tell Mama” and “Don’t Cry Baby.” The film, currently in preproduction, stars Oscar winner Adrien Brody as Leonard Chess, the founder of blues label Chess Records, and Jeffrey Wright as blues legend Muddy Waters. Others who have signed on for the project include Cedric the Entertainer, Emmanuelle Chriqui, and Columbus Short. Filming is scheduled for later this year in New Jersey and Mississippi. Meanwhile, Beyonce is scheduled to perform a duet with Tina Turner on the 50th annual Grammy Awards telecast, February 10th from Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Barack Is Back

barack-header.jpg

“After four great contests in every corner of this country, we have the most votes, the most delegates, and the most diverse coalition of Americans that we’ve seen in a long, long time.” — Illinois senator Barack Obama at his victory celebration in Columbia, South Carolina. After his total butt kicking performance in South Carolina on Saturday, it’s pretty safe to say Barack is back. Obama’s impressive win meant all the more given the nature of politics in South Carolina, a state whose history is fraught with race and class, says Time magazine’s Karen Tumulty. Going into Saturday’s election, some observers wondered if the state’s voters were becoming more racially polarized. That speculation was fueled by one late McClatchy/MSNBC survey that suggested Obama could expect to receive no more than 10% of the white vote, half of what the same poll had shown only a week before.
But the article points out that Obama instead won about a quarter of the white vote overall, and around half of young white voters, on his way to a commanding 55% of the total vote (Hillary Clinton finished second with roughly 27% and John Edwards came in third with 18%). Overall, 78 percent of black voters supported Obama, 19 percent backed Clinton and 2 percent went for Edwards. Obama had similarly large advantages among black women and black men and among younger and older African Americans. The Obama campaign also notes that in the mostly black precincts that Bill Clinton visted in Greenville, as much as 80% of the vote went to Obama. (Read on for more about Bill Clinton and the negatives he’s creating with black voters.) It is a powerful message for the Illinois Senator to take into the Super Tuesday round of primaries on February 5. “In nine days-nine short days – nearly half the nation will have the chance to join us in saying that we are tired of business-as-usual in Washington, we are hungry for change, and we are ready to believe again,” Obama declared. And for the moment, the good news continues for Senator Obama. Over the weekend, he received the endorsement of Ted Kennedy and his niece Caroline. Still, as Time’s Tumulty reminds, the sobering reality for the Obama campaign is that Clinton’s massive organization will present a formidable challenge in the 20-plus states that will be voting on February 5. Meanwhile Bill Clinton, continues his attack dog act and at the same time eroding his vaunted “First Black President” image among African Americans. At a rally in Missouri, he compared Obama’s South Carolina victory to that of Jesse Jackson’s in 1984 and 1988. The implication being that Obama is the Jesse jackson of 2008. Once again, it’s the Clinton camp injecting race in the game. Finally, the article pointed out that there was evidence that Obama’s victory was also a repudiation of the brand of hard-knuckled politics that both Clintons had brought to the South Carolina contest. Exit polls indicated that Bill Clinton’s campaigning made a difference to about 6 in 10 South Carolina Democratic primary voters. But of those voters, 47% went for Barack Obama, while only 38% went for Hillary Clinton. Fourteen percent voted for John Edwards.

DIDDY DECIDES TO CHANGE HIS NAME AGAIN

p-diddy.jpg

Hip hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs has decided that it’s time to change his name again. Combs, who previously used Puffy, Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, and Diddy as aliases, has decided he will now go by Sean John. Combs told the New York Post, “I have always evolved and taken a different name each time. It’s nothing unusual where I come from. Right now I want to be Sean John because that’s where I am.”

Next month Combs will be hitting the small screen in Raisin In the Sun, which airs on ABC on February 25th. In a Youtube posting, Combs said, “Ya’ll know me for a lot of different things, whether it’s music, fashion or films, television, but you don’t really know me as an actor. I would like to introduce my actor to you. Is my gift to you. It’s free, I’m not asking you to go pay to see the movie.”

On the musical front, Combs has no plans of hitting the studio anytime soon but that may change depending on whether or not he feels the need to fill a void. He explained: “Not a lot of hip-hop records that are out there right now, it’s not a whole lot. As far as vibe wise, you know, I’m not afraid to have fun. As a rap artist, I’m not afraid to smile, I’m not afraid to dance. That’s the void I fill, is just having a good time. And with hip-hop you need balance, and so during a time when there’s not like a lot of records that give you a great, good, good feeling — not saying there’s not a lot of hits, there’s definitely hits, but there are some things that are darker than others — and this is more of an upbeat type of album.”

KWAME TEXT MESSAGES ARE HOT!

kwame-kilpatrick-detroit-mayor.jpgchristine-beatty.jpg
KWAME KILPATRICK CHRISTINE BEATTY

Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick bristled in the witness chair last year when asked whether he had an affair with a top aide. No, the mayor confidently told jurors, the two were never romantically involved. But a trove of 14,000 text messages that emerged this week tell a different story: The mayor and his chief of staff carried on a flirty, sometimes sexually explicit dialogue about where to meet and how to conceal their numerous trysts. Now the mayor’s indiscretion has landed him in a Clinton-style scandal that could cost him his job and his law license and even bring perjury charges. “I think the mayor needs to take responsibility for the situation,” City Councilwoman Sheila Cockrel said Thursday. In politics, she said, “you operate in a fishbowl.” The Detroit Free Press did not explain exactly how it obtained the messages, which were sent or received in 2002-03 from Chief of Staff Christine Beatty’s city-issued pager. The newspaper said it cross-referenced the messages with the mayor’s private calendar and credit card records to verify events in some of the notes.

The mayor’s denial came last summer during testimony in a lawsuit filed by two police officers who alleged they were fired for investigating claims from two former bodyguards that the mayor used his security unit to cover up extramarital affairs. Mike Stefani, a lawyer for the officers, asked Beatty if she and Kilpatrick were “either romantically or intimately involved” during the period covered by the case. “No,” she replied, rolling her eyes. While still on the witness stand, the mayor later went on the offensive about the allegations, defending his reputation and that of Beatty. “I think it was pretty demoralizing to her — you have to know her — but it’s demoralizing to me as well,” he testified. “My mother is a congresswoman. There have always been strong women around me. My aunt is a state legislator. I think it’s absurd to assert that every woman that works with a man is a whore.” Late Wednesday, Kilpatrick issued a statement about the messages that was more subdued. “These five- and six-year-old text messages reflect a very difficult period in my personal life,” he said. “It is profoundly embarrassing to have these extremely private messages now displayed in such a public manner.” Last summer’s lawsuit ended with the jury awarding $6.5 million to the two officers. The mayor seemed flabbergasted at the verdict and denied the allegations against him. I’m absolutely blown away at this decision. I know Detroiters are, too,” he said at the time. The text messages published by the Free Press revealed a romantic discourse that at times became sexually explicit. “I’m madly in love with you,” Kilpatrick wrote on Oct. 3, 2002. “I hope you feel that way for a long time,” Beatty replied. “In case you haven’t noticed, I am madly in love with you, too!”

On Oct. 16, 2002, Kilpatrick wrote Beatty: “I’ve been dreaming all day about having you all to myself for 3 days. Relaxing, laughing, talking, sleeping and making love.” Kilpatrick is married with three children. Beatty was married at the time and has two children. The two, both 37, have been friends since they attended the same Detroit high school. Kilpatrick also appointed Beatty as his chief of staff when he became state House minority leader in 1999. She was his campaign manager during his campaigns for state House and the mayor’s office. The content of the text messages “astounded” Judge Michael Callahan, who presided over the lawsuit. He said the messages would have been admitted into evidence, if they had been presented during the trial. “I’ve done other whistle-blower cases, but I don’t think I’ve ever had a trial as tense as the one involving the mayor and the city,” he said. Callahan said it would be up to local prosecutors to decide whether to seek perjury charges against the mayor. The county prosecutor’s office declined to comment on Thursday, but scheduled a news conference for Friday morning.

A conviction of lying under oath is punishable by up to 15 years’ imprisonment.

SAMMY DAVIS JR.’S WIDOW SUES PARTNERS IN PRODUCTION COMPANY

sammy-davis-jr.jpg

Altovise Davis, the widow of Sammy Davis Jr., is suing two former business partners over the rights to the entertainer’s life story and management of his legacy. Davis filed suit in federal court Friday (January 18th), accusing Barrett LaRoda and Anthony Francis of padding their show biz expertise and defrauding her into signing away some of the rights to her husband’s estate.

In a 2004 contract, Davis formed Sammy Davis Jr. Enterprises Inc. with the two men and gave them some of her intellectual rights in return for a third of the business.

The company was formed to begin production of a Sammy Davis biopic, to be based on his autobiography Yes I Can as well as Why Me, which Davis wrote with friends Judy and Burt Boyar. Altovise Davis and the Boyars held copyright interest in the books.

But the entertainer’s widow says the two men held up production by hiding the company’s financials from her and demanded more money and credit as producers of the film. She is seeking unspecified damages. The Boyars are also involved in suing LaRoda and Francis.

Davis was memorable for his stage, screen, and record performances but was immortalized as the only black member of the Rat Pack alongside Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Joey Bishop. He died of throat cancer in 1990 at age 64. He owed more than $5 million to the IRS, forcing his widow to auction many of his personal belongings.

EDDIE MURPHY & TRACEY EDMONDS: OVER ALREADY

eddie_murphytracey_edmonds008-med.jpg

What a mess! Why didn’t they continue living together?!?! The marriage between actor Eddie Murphy and entertainment executive Tracey Edmonds is reportedly over. The couple, wed on New Year’s Day on the beach in Bora Bora, have separated without plans for a reconciliation, according to a People.com report Wednesday (January 16th). The couple released a joint statement late in the day, confirming the split.

“After much consideration and discussion, we have jointly decided that we will forego having a legal ceremony as it is not necessary to define our relationship further. While the recent symbolic union in Bora Bora was representative of our deep love, friendship and respect that we have for one another on a spiritual level, we have decided to remain friends,” the statement said.

According to the magazine, the pair canceled their union just 14 days after trading vows on the picturesque French Polynesian isle in front of 25 family members and close friends. The breakup came after a less-than-idyllic honeymoon, in which the two engaged in “screaming matches and arguments that lasted the entire week.”

Rumors of the Murphy-Edmonds split surfaced as early as last week.

Immediately after the private ceremony, media watchers noted that the wedding was not legally binding, as neither the 46-year-old funnyman nor his 40-year-old bride were residents of Bora Bora. Reps had promised that Murphy and Edmonds would follow-up with a legal stateside vow swap. That event is now scrapped.

Murphy and Edmonds became engaged in July 2007, and the hook-up was the second time to the altar for both.

Murphy was married to Nicole Mitchell for 12 years and had five children with her before their split in 2006. He was briefly engaged to Spice Girl Melanie Brown, who gave birth to a baby proven to be his child last April.

Edmonds was married to Grammy winning singer and songwriter Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, with whom she had two sons and launched Edmonds Entertainment, which she still heads. The pair announced their divorce in late 2006 after 13 years of marriage.

FOXY BROWN MAKES PLEA FOR EARLY RELEASE

foxy-brown-jan08.jpg

Rapper Foxy Brown has been behind bars since last August after violating the terms of her probation. The rapper is now seeking an early release and has written a letter as part of an appeal to the New York State Supreme Court. Reuters reports that Brown alluded to an ear condition in the letter (the rapper suffered some hearing loss in 2005 and went under knife in 2006 to rectify the problem).

In the handwritten four page letter, Brown said, “I ask you to please take into consideration that my health is in jeopardy. Yes, I’ve made some bad choices and stupid mistakes. But please understand that sitting in a prison with murderers and criminals is not rehabilitating or what I need to deal with my inner issues.”

The rapper added, “Up until now, you’ve only heard about Foxy Brown the artist. I’d like to show you Inga Marchand the beautiful person that my mom raised me to be. Jail has shaken me to my core, and my time away has impacted me greatly.”

Brown’s lawyer, Laura Dilimetin, also pointed to the rapper’s hearing condition and the electronic device that was inserted into her right ear. Dilimetin explained, “If her hearing is damaged any further, it will affect the way she hears and it will affect the way she sings. It will have dire consequences on her ability to maintain her profession and livelihood.”

Brown was jailed after violating the terms of her probation several times. The rapper was found guilty of assaulting two manicurists in 2004.

BEYONCE LAUNCHES FASHION DIVA PHONE & MOBILE GAME

beyonce-sports-illustrated.jpg

Beyonce has made yet another strategic merchandise deal to highlight her music as well as her House Of Dereon clothing line. The singer has partnered with Starwave Mobile to launch a mobile phone called Beyonce Fashion Diva. In addition to making calls with it, owners can play a mobile game with an online social networking component “which immerses players in a world of self-expression, confidence and style.”

The phone allows players to create a personal video Diva utilizing clothes, shoes, and accessories from the Dereon line, as well as hairstyles and facial features. The Diva can then enter virtual photo shoots and participate in other online activities in competition with other online players and earn virtual currency and other online perks.

Owners of the phone can also get clips of popular Beyonce songs from her B’Day CD.

“I love fashion and used to spend hours playing ‘dress up’ when I was a young girl,” Beyonce explained of the phone’s fashion twist. “As an adult, I still enjoy getting dressed up for my appearances. I believe our customers truly enjoy fashion as well and this mobile game is so much fun to play; it allows everyone to be a Fashion Diva.”

Beyonce is one of this year’s Grammy Award nominees whose film career may prevent her from showing up at next month’s ceremonies if the striking Hollywood writers fail to grant a pass to the Recording Academy. The writers’ strike has already affected the Golden Globes and other televised awards presentations.

IN OTHER BEYONCE NEWS; DAD SAYS SHE WON’T MISS THE GRAMMYS

beyonce_knowles_tight.jpg

As concerns mount about whether the Recording Academy can secure a waiver from the striking Writers Guild of America to stage their 50th anniversary Grammy Awards telecast, some recording artists who also have film and television careers are faced with the prospect of staying home. But Mathew Knowles, manager and father of superstar nominee Beyonce, says his clients will be there front and center.

In a message to the Recording Academy on Thursday, the Music World Entertainment mogul wrote: “The work of The Recording Academy is vital to the music industry, and we have every intention of being with the entire music community to celebrate the Grammys’ 50th birthday in February.

Knowles continued: “Beyonce, as well as my other artists Solange and Trinitee 5:7, have been asked to participate and will do so. We have an incredible Beyonce performance that will be announced soon. We wish the Grammys the best.”

Rock group the Foo Fighters, whose Grammy performance will include an appearance by an unknown artist voted onto the stage through the online My Grammy Moment contest, also pledged to attend the awards.

The 50th annual Grammy Awards are scheduled for February 10th at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

BARACK OBAMA DITCHES STEVIE WONDER CLASSIC AS CAMPAIGN SONG

barack-obama2.jpg

Senator Barack Obama has quickly ditched Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)” as his main campaign theme. The New Musical Express reported that after Obama’s recent defeat bySenator Hillary Clinton in the New Hampshire Democratic primary, Obama has changed his theme to Bill Withers’ “Lovely Day.”

Clinton has been alternating several songs at her public appearances, using both Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ “American Girl” and KT Tunstall’s “Suddenly I See,” with Senator John Edwards using Bruce Springsteen’s “The Rising” as his own campaign theme.

THE TEMPTATIONS AND THE FOUR TOPS CONSIDERING JOINT LAS VEGAS RESIDENCY

temptations-front-to-back.jpgfour_tops2007-med-wide.jpg

Temptations co-founder Otis Williams says that the group enjoys their joint dates with the Four Tops so much, that there’s a good chance that a double bill Las Vegas residency might be in the cards for this year: “Our agency has been trying to get that for us and the (Four) Tops in Las Vegas. So if it’s in Vegas and the money’s right, ‘Yeah.’ See, it cuts down on the one nighters, ’cause the one nighters will take the starch out your booty. You know, you have to get that rest because we had to be up at four to leave at six.”

The two legendary Motown groups perform dozens of dual shows together each year, with the groups alternating who opens and closes the shows.

The Temps recently released their latest album, Back To Front. Among the R&B classics on the new set are the Temps’ versions of Barry White’s “Never Never Gonna Give Ya Up,” the Bee Gees’ “How Deep Is Your Love,” the Staple Singers’ “Respect Yourself,” L.T.D. with Jeffrey Osborne’s “(Every Time I Turn Around) Back In Love Again,” and the Doobie Brothers’ “Minute By Minute,” among others.

The Temptations kick off their next set of shows on February 2nd in Trenton, New Jersey at the Patriots Theater at War Memorial.

The Temps will next perform with the Four Tops on February 17th in Nashville, at the Ryman Auditorium.

Roy Jones Jr. and Felix Trinidad are slated to square off on Saturday (January 19th) in Madison Square Garden. Allhiphop.com reports that Rick Ross’ camp announced on Wednesday (January 16th), that he would walk Jones into the ring while performing “Boss” from his upcoming album, Trilla, due out on March 11th. But according to representatives for Pastor Troy, he wrote an original theme song for the boxer following a personal request from Jones over a month ago.

OPRAH WINFREY PACTS FOR HER OWN TELEVISION NETWORK

oprah-powerful.jpg

Media mogul Oprah Winfrey is expanding her empire. The talk show multi-millionaire has pacted with Discovery Communications to launch her own television network. The Oprah Winfrey Network, or OWN, will debut in 2009 in more than 70 million homes, on what is currently the Discovery Health Channel. The network will encompass the online destination Oprah.com.

“Fifteen years ago, I wrote in my journal that one day I would create a television network, as I always felt my show was just the beginning of what the future could hold,” said Oprah Winfrey, who will serve as chairman of OWN. “For me, the launch of The Oprah Winfrey Network is the evolution of the work I’ve been doing on television all these years and a natural extension of my show.”

Winfrey will serve as chairman for the network, and an executive search is on to find a CEO to manage day-to-day operations.

BOW WOW DENIES RUMORS THAT HE SPIT IN CHRIS BROWN’S FACE

bow-wow.jpgchris-brown.jpg

The rumor mill has been in hyper drive since a story broke early Tuesday (January 15th) morning that Bow Wow threw a tantrum after a performance in Dallas on Saturday (January 12th). The rumor has him allegedly spitting in Chris Brown’s face during a heated backstage conversation and being subsequently restrained.

Bow Wow and Chris Brown are both on the Exclusive Tour. That’s about where the truth stops in regards to the rumor that has been circulating. While shopping in Tampa, Bow Wow told MTV.com, “Man, listen, I just got off the phone with Chris. My mom called me and told me about the rumor. I called him and told him, and he started laughing. We was dying (with laughter).”

The rapper added, “Anybody who knows me or anybody who’s been around me knows I’m not that kind of person. I (felt bad) for New York (reality-TV star Tiffany Pollard) when she got spit on during Flavor of Love. A wise man once taught me, the most vicious thing you can do is spit on somebody. It’s just a rumor. It’s a big rumor. I would never do that. That’s not being a man, that’s a sissy act.”

Bow Wow also clarified that he did experience some technical difficulties in Dallas and was upset that he had to end his show early. He said, “In the business we’re in, we are professionals. We don’t get paid big money for nothing. I was in front of 20,000 people in Dallas. I said, ‘Hey y’all, we got a blown speaker, and I’m not gonna let that stop me.’ Me going crazy and spitting on Chris, that’s absurd. Chris is like my brother. He has the utmost respect for me. He looks up to me. That’s my dude to the end.”

The rapper, who just purchased a condo in Las Vegas, added, “We’re selling out every major arena. (Jealous) people want to see me and Chris bump heads, but it’s not gonna happen. I only got five friends in the industry. Chris is definitely one of them. I would never spit in somebody’s face who I let sleep at my house when he comes to Atlanta or Miami. That’s just not in my character. That’s so far-fetched, it’s stupid. Me and Chris have been on tour since the last week of November. We’ve never fought. What are they gonna say next?”

NE-YO: ‘R. KELLY SHOWED ME BLATANT DISRESPECT’

neyo.jpg

Singer and songwriter Ne-Yo and his management company have filed suit against the promoter of the current R. Kelly Double Up tour, charging breach of contract after the “Because Of You” singer was booted from the tour after just two shows. Ne-Yo himself told the media that he thought he was asked to leave because he got strong reviews and Kelly didn’t.

While the case prevents Ne-Yo from discussing specifics, he did vent about his feelings in an interview with Essence.com. “As a man he showed me blatant disrespect,” said Ne-Yo of Kelly’s lack of direct communication. “He never tried to come and speak to me, but he wouldn’t even have to come to me, I would have been willing to talk to him about it, but that never happened. If you have issues with me, then be man enough to come to me personally,” he continued. “But instead he had his people do it and then they said it wasn’t him but that the promoters asked me to be removed from the tour and that’s b—sh–.”

Ne-Yo added that he’s still willing to talk to the singer. “I don’t hate R. Kelly. There won’t be no diss records — we don’t do that in R&B,” he joked.

MOSS DENIES BATTERY ALLEGATIONS

randy-moss.jpg

Randy Moss said Wednesday that allegations he committed battery against a woman are false and that she made the claim to get money from him. “I want to make something clear,” the Patriots wide receiver said while surrounded by reporters and cameras at his locker. “In my whole entire life of living 30 years, I’ve never put my hand on one woman, physically or in an angry manner.” Florida radio station WDBO reported that a woman filed for an order of protection against Moss, alleging he committed battery against her. The report said a temporary injunction was issued, barring Moss from coming within 500 feet of the woman and from using or possessing firearms. Moss gave no details of the alleged incident, saying he was restricted by the legal case.
He said the woman was a friend of 11 years and that she asked for “six figures” for what Moss said was an accident in which she was hurt. “They’re false allegations, something I’ve been battling for like the last couple of days of threats going public if I didn’t pay X amount of dollars,” Moss said. “So before people rush quick to judgment I think you need to find out the facts about, really, what’s going on. “This young lady by no means is hurt. I didn’t hurt her.” New England plays the San Diego Chargers in the AFC championship game in Foxborough on Sunday.

The 29 city tour will start in Evansville, Indiana on January 25 and will wrap up in Toledo, Ohio on March 22nd. MARION JONES TO APPEAR ON ‘OPRAH’ TOMORROW

marion-jones.jpg

Disgraced Olympic athlete Marion Jones, who was sentenced to prison Friday (January 11th) for perjury and fraud, will appear on The Oprah Winfrey Show tomorrow (January 16th) in an exclusive interview.

At a court appearance Friday in White Plains, New York, the former track star was sentenced to six months in jail for lying to federal investigators about using steroids and for her role in a check fraud scheme. U.S. District Court Judge Kenneth Karas also sentenced Jones to two years of supervised release and 400 hours of community service.

Jones had publicly apologized after being charged with using the substance known in athletic circles as “the clear.” On Friday, the former gold medalist begged the judge not to send her to prison, thus separating her from her two young sons with husband, Olympic sprinter Obadele Thompson.

But Karas noted that while the children were victims, Jones has to face the consequences for her actions. “We wouldn’t be here today talking about the possibility of incarceration if Ms. Jones-Thompson had told the truth,” he said.

Later in the same session, Karas also sentenced Jones’ former coach Steve Riddick to 5 years and 3 months in prison for his role in the check-fraud scam.

DID OBAMA USE JAY-Z VICTORY SONG AS A JAB?

jay-z.jpgbarack-obama2.jpg

Presidential hopeful Barack Obama is a big fan of hip hop and he played Jay-Z’s hit, “99 Problems,” as his victory song after winning the Iowa Caucus. Now some people are taking exception because on the song, Jay-Z raps, “I got 99 problems, but a b**ch ain’t one.” Some believe it may have been a veiled hit at Hillary Clinton.

A spokesperson for Clinton told New York Post’s Page Six, “We didn’t know he used that.”

Obama didn’t address the incident but in the past he’s shared his appreciation for hip hop. He told CNN.com, “I tell you what, I can tell you the kinds of stuff I love dancing to. I’m sort of the generation of Stevie Wonder and Earth, Wind and Fire. But I’m sort of hip to the younger stuff. You know, like Beyonce’s ‘Crazy in Love.’ That’s a good song to dance to. Eminem, although he curses sometimes.”

In related news, when Hillary Clinton won the New Hampshire Primary she played “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell.

MARIAH CAREY DENIES BEEF WITH JENNIFER LOPEZ

mariah-carey.jpg

Multi-platinum star Mariah Carey is denying that she made disparaging comments about fellow New York pop vocalist Jennifer Lopez. She had reportedly said that she would rather “be on stage with a pig” than perform a duet with Jenny From The Block.

Carey told People magazine, “This is just some Internet gossip and it’s pathetic that people actually entertain the thought that this could be real. This is another sad example of two strong women being pitted against each other.”

The “We Belong Together” songbird is finishing up her new CD, the follow-up to her 2005 smash, The Emancipation of Mimi. The set is due this spring. Carey will also be seen in the film Tennessee, slated for release this summer.

Lopez had a dismal sales showing for her 2007 CD, Brave. She is expecting a baby with husband, Latin music and film star Marc Anthony. Unconfirmed reports have the singer pregnant with twins.
