Karrine “Superhead” Steffans To Release New Book on White Actors
Karrine “Superhead” Steffans is reportedly working on a new tell-all book. According to MediaTakeOut, Superhead will be talking about her intimate encounters with White actors this time. Her previous novel, “Confessions of a Video Vixen” (2005), was an expose’ about her sexual relationships with rappers and athletes, all of which were African-American. The insider told MediaTakeOut.com, “Everyone thinks that [Superhead] only had relationships with African American celebrities, but that’s not true. She’s been in Hollywood for a few years and she’s never discriminated.” “Up until now, she’s only talked about [African-Americans], but in her new book, she’ll open up more,” the insider continued. “And you’ll be surprised at some of the names that come up. There’s even an A-List actor.” “Confessions of a Video Vixen” is now on the New York Times bestseller list.
“THE” QUEEN LASHES OUT
Aretha Franklin has lashed out at Beyoncé Knowles following last Sunday’s Grammy awards ceremony, where both singers appeared. That night, Beyoncé took to the stage with a musical monologue, paying tribute to many of the artists who have preceded her. “When I was a little girl I dreamed of being on this stage,” she speak-sang. “But I knew I needed all the right elements. Like the beat of Donna Summer, the spirit of Mahalia Jackson, the jazz of Ella or Nancy …”
So far, all’s well. But as film-clips appeared behind her and the band played a medley of jazz classics, Beyoncé introduced the woman who would be joining her for a duet: “But there is one legend who has the essence of all of these things. The glamour. The soul. The passion. The strength. The talent. Ladies and gentlemen,” Beyoncé fatefully intoned, “stand on your feet and give it up for the Queen.” Only the “Queen” was not Aretha Franklin. It was Tina Turner. “I am not sure of whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writer and Beyoncé,” Franklin later said to reporters, “however I dismissed it as a cheap shot for controversy.” Aretha Franklin, you see, is the Queen of Soul. This is a consensus title, as with the King of Pop (Michael Jackson) or the King of Rock (Elvis Presley). She was mentioned in Beyoncé’s speech, but only as a “historical figure”, part of a list that included Sarah Vaughn and Chaka Khan. This did not please Franklin one bit. The controversy stems from the fact that Tina Turner is known as the Queen of Rock’n'roll. Presumably all will be smoothed over when a son of the House of Soul marries a daughter from the House of Rock’n'roll and the two lines are joined in one formidable union.
BYNUM NOT GETTING BACK WITH WEEKS
In response to an article on www.articlesofinfo.com, Juanita Bynum would like to make it very clear that she is not in counseling with Bishop Thomas Weeks III, nor are there any talks of reconciliation as stated in the false article written by Doug Campbell.
As Dr Bynum has stated in the past, she feels that reconciliation with her estranged husband could be a tremendous testimony to the body of Christ; however that is not the case at this time. After severing all ties with the Weeks Family, Juanita Bynum Ministries received a request from Bishop Week’s uncle, Bishop Leo Smith to speak at his conference in Barbados this June. She also received an invitation from his grandfather and aunt, Bishop Thomas J. Weeks, and Dr. Gwendolyn Weeks to speak at their 2-Day Prayer Revival in Boston. Dr Bynum has always honored her ministry and has great love and respect for the Weeks family, and after much prayer she accepted both invitations. As Dr. Bynum’s publicist I say this “After all is said and done, Juanita Bynum is an anointed woman of God, and called to be a voice to the nation. She is genuine in her relationship with God and understands it is impossible to maintain bitterness and love in the same heart. She has handled herself with dignity and integrity throughout this unfortunate ordeal, and as she moves forward she will continue to do no less. Dr. Bynum is treating these invitations as she does all others; an opportunity to minister to God’s pe
ISAAC HAYES, JOHN LEGEND JOIN ‘SOUL MEN’
The cast of “Soul Men” expands with the addition of several new actors – including Isaac Hayes, “Will & Grace” vet Sean Hayes, singer John Legend and “American Pie’s” so-called “MILF” Jennifer Coolidge. The film stars Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac respectively as Louis and Floyd, two estranged soul singers who reluctantly take a road trip to a reunion show at the Apollo Theater in honor of their newly-deceased third member, who will be played by John Legend. Isaac Hayes, who voiced the character Chef in Comedy Central’s “South Park,” will play himself in “Soul Men,” while Coolidge has been cast as the love interest of Mac’s character. Sean Hayes plays the band’s obnoxious manager. Jackie Long has also joined the film, along with Affion Crockett, Adam Herschman and Fatso Fasano. As previously reported, Sharon Leal signed on to play Louis’ daughter Cleo, who joins him and Floyd on their road trip and eventually becomes a singer for the band. The film will be directed by Malcolm Lee (”Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins”) and is scheduled for release on Oct. 10 via MGM/Dimension.
KEITH SWEAT GIVES US SOME ‘SUGA’
Keith Sweat is preparing a return to the music scene with new material set to drop across multiple platforms – including ringtones and digital downloads. His new single, “Suga Suga Suga,” is currently at radio and just became available as a ringtone and digital single earlier this week. The track is the first release from his upcoming album “Just Me,” which is due to hit stores on May 6 via Atco/Rhino. The veteran crooner is promoting the project with a 19-city U.S. tour that launches tonight in the ATL and runs through May. (Scroll down for details.) I’m giving the people what they expect from me,” Sweat says of his new album. “You hear other artists out here who make the mistake of trying to be trendy. They really try to keep up. I know what people want to hear from Keith Sweat. I’m conscious of the people who have followed me the whole time, since day one. I remember that I have a fan base and I’m very careful to give the people what they expect from me.” “Just Me” features guest artists Keyshia Cole and Athena Cage (Keith’s duet partner on the million-selling 1996 hit “Nobody”). Aside from his tour, Sweat also finds time to host his own syndicated radio show “The Keith Sweat Hotel” on Premiere Radio Network, which is heard in 24 markets nationwide. Sweat’s tour includes the following cities: Atlanta, GA (2/14), Chicago, IL (2/15), Las Vegas, NV (2/16), Los Angeles, CA (2/17), Nashville, TN (2/23), Miami, FL (3/7), New Orleans, LA (3/8), Columbia, SC (3/14), Greenville, SC (3/15), Oakland, CA (3/2
and New York, NY (5/17).
JEFFERSON UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR MINNEAPOLIS NIGHTCLUB INCIDENT
New Jersey Nets forward Richard Jefferson is being investigated by authorities in Minneapolis for allegedly choking some man at a club, then threatening to beat up another man who witnessed the incident, TMZ has reported. A police report states Jefferson got in a “minor verbal disagreement” with another patron at the club, which then escalated to a situation in which the NBA star was on top of the man, allegedly choking him. According to the report, Jefferson left the club, and then ran into a witness who asked Jefferson to stay put until the disagreement was cleared up. The witness says Jefferson responded, “Say another word, I will kick your ass.” No charges have been filed, but Minneapolis PD says Jefferson is under investigation for “assault with significant bodily harm.”

OBAMA WAX FIGURE UNVIELED
Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama may be on a quest to become the next Commander in Chief, but a wax figure of the Illinois senator is finding a place with likenesses of rap icons Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. at Madame Tussauds Washington DC. The Obama figure, which sits behind the famed Resolute Desk in Madame Tussauds’ replica of the Oval Office with fellow Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and former President Bill Clinton on one side and John and Jackie Kennedy on the other side, was unveiled to the public for the first time (Feb. 11). “Barack Obama has certainly earned his place among the political icons represented at Madame Tussauds Washington D.C.,” said Janine DiGioacchino, general manager of Madame Tussauds New York and Washington D.C. “Madame Tussaud’s is proud to add the Obama figure to the Spirit of Washington D.C. gallery where he will join other figures that have shaped the history of our nation.” The unveiling comes as Obama and Clinton square off in today’s Potomac Primaries. Obama goes into the primaries with a wave of momentum after sweeping Democratic primaries and caucuses this past weekend in Maine, Louisiana, Nebraska, Washington and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Despite her opponent’s showing, CNN estimates state that Clinton is slightly ahead in amount of delegates she has collected. The former first lady has 1,148 delegates, while Obama currently holds 1,121 delegates. To secure the Democratic presidential nomination, 2,025 delegates are needed. On a lighter note, Obama bested Bill Clinton on Sunday (Feb. 10) by earning a Grammy award for best spoken word album for the audio version of his book The Audacity of Hope. We’ll have the results of the so-called Potomac primaries tomorrow.
NATALIE COLE SAYS WRONG MESSAGE SENT
Natalie Cole can’t understand how the Recording Academy can award a leading five Grammys to Amy Winehouse when the troubled singer has spent years abusing drugs and alcohol and only recently entered rehab to address her addiction. “I don’t think she should have won,” Cole told People magazine at Sunday’s Warner Music Group post-Grammy party. “I think it sends a bad message to our young people who are trying to get into this business, the ones who are trying to do it right and really trying to keep themselves together. We have to stop rewarding bad behavior.” “I’m sorry. I think the girl is talented, gifted, but it’s not right for her to be able to have her cake and eat it too,” Cole continued. “She needs to get herself together.” Cole, who has had her share of substance abuse battles in the past, said she fears Winehouse may carry on her destructive ways if the industry continues to look past it and reward her talent. “I mean, she could die. This isn’t something that’s cute and fun just to throw around in the press,” said Cole. “The girl really has a problem, and I think for those of us who have been in the business long enough, we know the sacrifice it takes. This is about discipline and hard work, and you don’t get to just do your drugs and go onstage and get rewarded.”
CW CANCELLS GIRLFRIENDS
We hear from a source within the “Girlfriends” writing camp that the CW has decided to cancel the series immediately instead of bringing it back for a ninth season. While no official announcement had been made as of press time, we were told the CW will not even film this season’s remaining nine episodes that were suspended during the writer’s strike. Ironically, news of the show’s cancellation comes just as the strike has ended and the writing staff was preparing to return to work. We were informed by one of the writers yesterday that Monday night’s one-hour block of new episodes served as the show’s last. “Girlfriends” became the longest-running live-action comedy series currently on network television with the debut of its current season in October 2007. The writers strike suspended production after only 13 of 22 ordered episodes were completed. The series, created by Mara Brock-Akil, was consistently the No. 1 show in black households since its Sept. 11, 2000 debut. Original cast members Tracee Ellis Ross, Golden Brooks, Persia White and Jill Marie Jones starred as a group of close friends dealing with life and love in Los Angeles. Jones left the series in at the end of Season 6.
JACKSON THANKS FANS FOR THRILLER SUCCESS
Along with today’s release of Michael Jackson’s 25th anniversary edition of “Thriller” comes a video just released by the King of Pop in which he thanks fans for the album’s original success following its November 1982 release. “It’s hard to believe that 25 years ago Quincy Jones and I embarked on an album named `Thriller,’” Jackson said in the video message released Monday by his record company, Sony-BMG. With Black Eyed Peas producer will.i.am working on a new studio album from Jackson, the singer dropped hints that his recording career is far from over. “There is still much to come for Michael Jackson,” he said. “My passion for music has never stopped. … It’s my hope that `Thriller’ continues to live on for each new generation to discover.”
VINCE GILL, JUST KIDDING
Sunday’s Grammy ceremony had a little impromptu moment involving country star Vince Gill and rapper Kanye West. Gill and West were album of the year nominees along with Amy Winehouse, Foo Fighters and eventual winner, Herbie Hancock. During West’s acceptance speech for rap album of the year, he looked at Winehouse’s producer Mark Ronson in the audience and said that Ronson and the British singer deserve the top album award for their collaborative effort “Back to Black,” but only if the rapper fails to get the win himself for his album, “Graduation.” Cut to Vince Gill accepting his country album of the year award from presenter Ringo Starr. Gill looked at Kanye in the audience and said: “I just got an award given to me by a Beatle. Have you had that happen yet, Kanye?” Reporters were quick to jump on the comment during Gill’s visit with the press backstage. He told reporters that the comment was all in good fun and that he has not triggered a new music beef. “No, he was laughing,” Gill said. “I’m a smartass. You know, I can’t help it. He seemed to think that he and Amy were the only ones worthy of the album of the year tonight. And I was just having some fun. He laughed, so it was all in good spirit.”
Feb. 12, 1900: For a Lincoln birthday celebration, James Weldon Johnson writes the lyrics for “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” With music by his brother, J. Rosamond, the song is first sung by 500 children in Jacksonville, Fla. It will become known as the “Negro National Anthem.”

OBAMA MAKES CLEAN SWEEP AS DELIEVERY RETURNS
Obama won an upset victory in Maine, a state where internal and external polls had Clinton leading in the days leading up to the caucuses. Obama is projected to win 15 delegates to Clinton’s 9, capping off an Obama sweep of this weekend’s contests. Barack Obama has won nearly twice as many states as Hillary Clinton. He won a Red State, Purple State, and Blue States this weekend – showing he has broad national appeal and can win in every corner of this country. Obama has now won 20 contests to Clinton’s 11; he’s won a larger share of the popular vote; and he’s projected to more than triple his current pledged delegate lead since Super Tuesday from 27 pledged delegates to 84, a net gain of 57 pledged delegates. This weekend’s net gain of 57 pledged delegates represents more than the 42 delegate net gain that Clinton won in Massachusetts, New Jersey, Tennessee and Arizona – combined. While Obama’s victories demonstrate his broad national appeal, he still faces an uphill battle in every upcoming contest because the Clintons are far better known and have a political machine that’s been honed over two decades. But the more voters get to know Obama and his message of change, the more they support him, which bodes well for the upcoming primaries.
Obama’s victories reflect what a recent Time poll confirmed the other day – that he is the candidate best suited to win Independents, play well in Red States, and beat John McCain in November. As the nominee, Obama will also help down-ballot Democrats get elected to Congress across the country, especially in those Red States where Democrats haven’t fared well for decades. So Obama won’t just win an election, he’ll win a new majority for change, so we can finally solve the problems we’ve been talking about for decades.
Sen. Barack Obama swept the Louisiana primary and caucuses in Nebraska and Washington state Saturday night, slicing into Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s slender delegate lead in their historic race for the Democratic presidential nomination. The Illinois senator also won caucuses in the Virgin Islands, completing his best night of the campaign. …”Today, voters from the West Coast to the Gulf Coast to the heart of America stood up to say ‘yes we can”’ Obama told a cheering audience of Democrats at a party dinner in Richmond, Va. [He said] the election was a choice between debating the Republican nominee-in-waiting ”about who has the most experience in Washington, or debating him about who’s most likely to change Washington. Because that’s a debate we can win.” …Obama’s winning margins ranged from substantial to crushing. He won roughly two-thirds of the vote in Washington state and Nebraska, and almost 90 percent in the Virgin Islands.
It also appears that after an early decision to cease playing Stevie Wonder’s Signed, Sealed, Delivered at campaign rallies has been reversed, at least at the Jefferson Jackson dinner in West Virginia Saturday night.
Both Hillary Clinton and Obama spoke at the dinner this past weekend. Hillary was first to address the audience and before she could exit the hall, no doubt she heard the chants of “Obama, Obama!” from the capacity crowd. Greeted by those boisterous cheers, an obviously pleased Obama began his remarks shortly after news services had declared him the victor in the Nebraska, Washington and Louisiana primaries and caucuses. Obama’s address, largely his stump speech, was punctuated with local references, jabs at both Clinton and republican candidate John McCain as well as an appeal for support in the Maine primary on Tuesday. Now that the campaign has regained its swagger, the Stevie Wonder single, Signed, Sealed, Delivered surprisingly surfaced following a notable absence during a stop in Minnesota before a rally totaling 20,000 people. The Obama campaign temporarily suspended use of the song after finishing second to Senator Clinton in the New Hampshire primary last month.
WILL KANYE WEST HIT THE STAGE AT THE GRAMMY AWARDS?
Multiple Grammy Award winner Kanye West is back for more this year, as he’s been nominated for eight Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and Best Rap Album — but the jury is still out on whether or not the Louis Vuitton Don will hit the stage for a performance at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards this Sunday, February 10th in Los Angeles. According to an inside source, West will indeed perform and he’s planning something very special. Some of the other artists slated to perform are Fergie, John Legend, Beyonce, Herbie Hancock, Alicia Keys, Aretha Franklin, and Mary J. Blige. Chris Brown, Solange Knowles, and Ludacris are all slated to present awards during the show. The King of Pop, Michael Jackson, is also slated to make an appearance during a special tribute.
Pop star Rihanna will perform her Grammy-nominated international hit “Umbrella” onstage during the 50th Annual Grammy Awards presentation in a brand-new way. The Barbados-born singer will sing the hit in a unique mash-up version with ’80s band The Time, which is reuniting with its original members for the first time in more than two decades.
Singer and songwriter Raheem DeVaughn says he’s looking forward to attending Sunday’s (February 10th) 50th anniversary Grammy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles, where he’s a nominee in the best R&B male vocal performance category for his single “Woman.” The nominated tune is from his sophomore CD, Love Behind The Melody. Said DeVaughn: “I didn’t expect it so early in my career, you know, an accolade so huge but I accept it, you know, it’s humbling, you know, ultimately it’s a blessing. And I’m looking forward to going to the Grammys this year as a nominee. I’ve been in the past, in the last two or three years as a spectator and now I’m going as a nominee. And you know, it’s an honor.”
British singer Amy Winehouse will not attend the Grammy Awards on Sunday (February 10th), after being denied a visa to enter the United States — but she might perform on the show via satellite. On Thursday (February 7th), Winehouse’s publicist released the following statement, “Amy Winehouse will not be performing at this year’s Grammy Awards ceremony. The singer has been invited to appear at the event on Sunday (February 10th) after receiving an amazing six nominations for the prestigious awards. Unfortunately, her application for a visa to enter the United States of America has been rejected at this time by the American Embassy in London.”
The 50th Annual Grammy Awards will air live from Los Angeles Sunday (February 10th) on CBS, beginning at 8 p.m. ET. Kanye West leads the field with eight Grammy nominations. Amy Winehouse follows him with six nominations. Foo Fighters, Jay-Z, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, and T-Pain each have five nods, and Akon, Dierks Bentley, Daughtry, Feist, Tim McGraw, John Newton, Ne-Yo, Rihanna, and Bruce Springsteen all have four.

In other Jay-Z news: has only been out of work for a month since leaving his post as president of Def Jam Records but it appears the rapper is ready to get back in the mix. In addition to rumors that he’s launching a digital label with Apple, new reports have surfaced that Jay-Z may be re-uniting with Lyor Cohen and launching a new label through the Warner Music Group. The new label would be called the Carter Music Group. An insider told New York’s Daily News, “The reason Jay left Def Jam was less about money than about freedom. He didn’t want to come to the office every day. And he had so many outside projects — his chain of 40/40 clubs and the hotel he’s building in Chelsea. But he wouldn’t mind having a small label for the talent he discovers. He might just put out three or four records a year. He’d let somebody else do the heavy lifting.” Jay-Z still owes Def Jam Records one album and a greatest hits set.

IT’S OVER FOR MITT ROMNEY
Mitt Romney suspended his faltering presidential campaign on Thursday, effectively sealing the Republican presidential nomination for John McCain. “I must now stand aside, for our party and our country,” Romney told conservatives. “If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror,” Romney told the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington. Romney’s decision leaves McCain as the top man standing in the GOP race, with Mike Huckabee and Texas Rep. Ron Paul far behind in the delegate hunt. It was a remarkable turnaround for McCain, who some seven months ago was barely viable, out of cash and losing staff. The four-term Arizona senator, denied his party’s nomination in 2000, was poised to succeed George W. Bush as the GOP standard-bearer. McCain and Romney spoke by phone after Romney’s speech, though no endorsement was requested nor offered, according to a Republican official with knowledge of the conversation. Romney launched his campaign almost a year ago in his native Michigan. The former Massachusetts governor and venture capitalist invested more than $40 million of his own money into the race, counted on early wins in Iowa and New Hampshire that never materialized and won just seven states on Super Tuesday, mostly small caucus states.
McCain took the big prizes of New York and California. “This is not an easy decision for me. I hate to lose. My family, my friends and our supporters … many of you right here in this room … have given a great deal to get me where I have a shot at becoming president. If this were only about me, I would go on. But I entered this race because I love America,” Romney said. There were shouts of astonishment, with some moans and others yelling, “No, No.” Romney responded, “You guys are great.” McCain prevailed in most of the Super Tuesday states, moving closer to the numbers needed to officially win the nomination. Overall, McCain led with 707 delegates, to 294 for Romney and 195 for Huckabee. It takes 1,191 to win the nomination at this summer’s convention in St. Paul, Minn. By suspending his campaign, Romney holds onto his delegates, at least until the party convention this summer. Romney claimed he was the true conservative in the race while McCain has been criticized by some on the right. McCain acknowledged the rocky relationship.
THE GAME COPS A PLEA IN ASSAULT CASE
The Game, whose real name is Jayceon Taylor, has decided to accept a plea deal instead of fighting his assault case. He was charged with making criminal threats, possessing a firearm in a school zone, and exhibiting a firearm in the presence of a police officer, and was facing five years behind bars if found guilty. He has allegedly agreed to serve a four month sentence.
The rapper told MONTSA magazine, “The crazy part about this is that I’ve had guns before in my life. But this time I didn’t have a gun. And because one person said I had a gun and coaxed his homies into saying that I had a gun, I’m in a predicament where I’m asking ‘do I want to spend another million dollars to fight this trial so who knows what jury’s gonna come in and say I’m guilty? Or do I want to save my money, go sit down for four months and accept this felony they’re trying to give me for no reason?”
The rapper eventually chose the latter. The Game’s charges stem from an incident which occurred last year. The rapper and Rodrick Shannon allegedly got into a beef at Los Angeles’ Rita Walters Educational Learning Complex on February 24th. Shannon testified at a preliminary hearing that he and the rapper, who was playing for the opposing team, exchanged words. Game allegedly called Shannon’s team garbage before punching him in the left cheek. According to the victim, when he went into a fighting stance people from The Game’s crew restrained him while the rapper left the court. Later when Shannon went to look for his son in the parking lot, The Game allegedly went into his Cadillac Escalade and brandished a firearm. Shannon explained during his testimony, “He started proceeding towards me. The gun was still in his hand. He yelled that I’m a … fool. I turned around and ran because I feared for my life.” The Game is currently working on his third album, LAX, which he plans to release later this year.
DIDDY URGES THE YOUTH TO VOTE
Hip hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs launched the Vote or Die campaign four years ago to get the younger generation involved with the voting process. While he hasn’t revamped Vote or Die, he is calling for everyone to “Go Vote.” The mogul told Associated Press, “If we want to stop the war, if we want to get the economy better, I think that young people need to understand they have to take matters into their own hands. It is really like waking up a sleeping giant.” Combs added, “The seeds that we planted in ‘04 are now coming to fruition. A lot of young people have decided that this is their future. This president is going to decide their future.” As far as this year’s Democratic candidates, Combs said, “To have an African-American man and a woman in, it’s going to go down in history as the most historical election. And I think that young people will have a hand in the result.”
In related news, Diddy has named quintet from his show, Making The Band 4, Day26. The group’s name comes from the day — August 26th — that Combs selected Brian Andrews, Mike McCluney, Qwanell Mosley, Willie Taylor, and Robert Curry to be in the band. The group is currently working on their debut.
JAY-Z’S NEWEST 40/40 ALREADY TAKING HEAT
Hip hop mogul Jay-Z was able to open up his newest 40/40 sports bar in Las Vegas in time for New Years’ Eve but, according to several former employees of the establishment, the workplace leaves a lot to be desired. The Las Vegas Weekly reports that since the club was opened on December 30th over 100 staff members have been let go. Several former employees have lodged complaints about on-the-spot, mid-shift terminations without investigations, threats, degrading treatment, use of the n-word by management, and a complete lack of preparedness. Operating partner Desiree Perez (aka Desiree Gonzalez) — wife of co-owner Juan Perez — is said to be responsible for the firings. Perez would not comment but club manager Ramon Mata said, “As with all new businesses, you find out in your first few days of operations what staffing levels are needed. We adjusted accordingly and followed all rules and regulations in terms of employees that were let go.” The original 40/40 sports bar in New York City has been dogged by several incidents, including a stabbing last September and lawsuit by former waitress Celeste Williams, who alleges that 40/40 refused to pay employees the legally required amounts for work performed. According to Williams, 40/40 kept a cut of workers’ tips and didn’t pay the legal minimum wage rate for working or for overtime.
JANET JACKSON TALKS ABOUT HER FAITH, HER MARRIAGES & MORE
In the new issue of Parade magazine, Janet Jackson talks candidly about her father’s many affairs, one of which produced a child, and how they nearly broke up his parents’ marriage. “Besides my mother’s beauty and her smarts, what I always wanted was her strength,” she said of her 77-year-old mother, Katherine. “It’s a very cold world, and to have gone through what she has had to experience, from having polio as a child to those things with my brother Michael, and then for my father to have had another child! I’ve been cheated on a lot. I know what that feels like and how that hurts the heart. But, I mean, to give us a half-sister. I can’t even fathom what that’s like for Mother. For her to stay with my father all these years and never abandon her kids, that’s true love.” The 41-year-old singer has also had her share of troubled love relationships, which could be the reason she has yet to wed her longtime boyfriend, producer Jermaine Dupri. Of her two marriages, both of which were kept secret until they ended, she said, “I wanted to keep something for myself and not have it be public,” the singer said. “But after two divorces, I thought I was jinxed. Maybe marriage isn’t for me? Maybe it’s my fault it never works. I was always faithful. I always tried to give of myself. I was very loyal… It was awful, and I was so tired of being hurt. When it was over, I put shields up to protect myself from being hurt again.” Jackson also discusses life as a Jehovah’s Witness, admitting that she often fell asleep during services. “I know that’s awful. I was so tired, so busy, so knocked out,” she said, explaining, “Being a Jehovah’s Witness, you grow up in a very religious world.” Janet’s album Discipline was made available on Tuesday (February 5th) to pre-order on the iTunes Music Store.
USHER TRACKS BEING HEARD
Two new Usher songs have surfaced, and by the sound of it, a new album could be announced very soon. His long-time collaborator and producer, Jermaine Dupri, told MTV News that Usher plans to start officially releasing singles “soon.” But two tracks — “In This Club” and “Moving Mountains” — have already leaked.” The first was produced by Polow Da Don and features Young Jeezy. The second is a ballad about relationships that was reportedly produced by Timbaland. There’s no word on whether the singles will end up on the CD. Also contributing to the as-yet-untitled set are Philadelphia producers Dre & Vidal, as well as Lil Jon, who’s trying to come up with a remix for tracks.
ARETHA GOING LIGHT
Aretha Franklin says that after dropping some weight, she’s feeling the best she’s felt in years. Franklin told The Associated Press, “I’ve got a new trainer, and she’s giving me a lot of good things, really educating me about nutrition and weight loss and how to do it, and cooking stuff for you. I’m not on a diet. It’s a lifestyle change. I’m going to be doing it for the long run. And eventually I’ll reach my goal.” Although Franklin didn’t go into details about her diet, she did reveal that she’s steered clear of red meat: “I feel lighter. I’m not as heavy, what you get with the red meat. You dragging yourself along when you have all that red meat. Much lighter. I feel a lot lighter, and a lot better.” On Friday night Franklin will be honored in Los Angeles as the 2008 Person of the Year for MusiCares. Franklin is thrilled with the honor which benefits musicians in need: “It truly is an honor and it is so very, very special to be honored by MusiCare and to be the 2008 recipient of the MusiCare Person of the Year Award. I am delighted, concerned and a contributor — and have been — to the significant work that MusiCare has done.” The MusiCares gala will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center just ahead of the 50th Annual Grammy Awards presentation on February 10th.
Franklin is nominated for best gospel performance for a duet with Mary J. Blige for the duet “Never Gonna Break My Faith” from the soundtrack of the film Bobby. Among the artists set to honor Franklin at the MusiCares tribute will be Patti Austin, Blues Brothers Dan Aykroyd & Jim Belushi, Shirley Caesar, Anthony Hamilton, Herbie Hancock, Roy Hargrove, Faith Hill, Fantasia, Ledisi, Lil’ Mama, John Legend, Jamia Simone Nash, Robin Thicke, and Bebe & CeCe Winans. Franklin herself is also expected to take the stage. Past MusiCares Person of the Year honorees include Tony Bennett, Bono, Natalie Cole, Phil Collins, David Crosby, Gloria Estefan, Don Henley, Billy Joel, Elton John, Quincy Jones, Luciano Pavarotti, Bonnie Raitt, Paul Simon, Sting, James Taylor, Brian Wilson, and Stevie Wonder. Franklin is gearing up to release her debut album on her own Aretha Records, called Aretha: A Woman Falling Out Of Love. RAPPERS GET READY FOR SUPER TUESDAY ELECTIONS
Voters in twenty-four states across America will head to the polls tomorrow (February 5) in what is labeled “Super Tuesday,” the biggest day in the process to choose candidates for the Nov. presidential election. The energy of Election 2008 has increased exponentially after the Iowa caucus kicked off on January 3, which saw Illinois Senator Barack Obama defeat the popular New York Senator Hillary Clinton. Although Obama also won the state contest in South Carolina, Clinton still maintains a narrow lead in nationwide polls. “I have been struggling,” Hip-Hop mogul Russell Simmons admitted to AllHipHop.com. “There are some real hard issues. My brain has been with Hillary Clinton a long time and I’m trying to get my heart…I met with Barack once.” Q-Tip, of legendary Hip-Hop group A Tribe Called Quest, has firmly endorsed Barack Obama. “I am endorsing Barack Obama because I feel that we can benefit greatly from a leader that offers sound judgment and experience rooted in the lives of real people,” Q-Tip said.
Super Tuesday Primaries And Caucuses Today
Voters in some two dozen states across the country will either go to the polls or caucus on Super Tuesday today (February 5th) in what’s the closest to a national presidential primary that we have. For the Republicans, 1,023 delegates will be at stake in primaries in 15 states, caucuses in five and the West Virginia state convention. On the Democratic side, 1,681 delegates are up for grabs in 15 primaries, and caucuses in seven states and American Samoa. As the candidates continued to crisscross the country on the campaign trail yesterday, Republican frontrunners John McCain and Mitt Romney continued to battle over who is the true conservative, while the Democratic candidates were spending unprecedented amounts of money on TV advertising, with both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton spending in excess of $1 million a day on spots.
MICHAEL VICK STILL RICH
Michael Vick has been ordered to repay only $3.75 million of the $20 million sought by the Atlanta Falcons in its attempt to recover bonus money lost when the suspended quarterback was convicted on dogfighting-related charges. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Monday’s ruling overturns an arbitrator’s earlier decision that called for Vick to repay the Falcons $20 million in bonuses since he could not earn them due to his 23-month federal prison sentence and indefinite suspension by the NFL.
Vick’s attorney, Lawrence Woodward Jr., said his client was pleased with the ruling, but understands there could be appeals. “He’s grateful for some good news but he realizes he needs to keep doing all the right things to get back to playing football,” Woodward said. The Falcons issued the following statement from President Rich McKay: “While we are disappointed by Judge Doty’s decision, this ruling does not affect our salary cap management for the 2008 season. Any potential recovery would have only affected our 2009 salary cap. As to our future legal strategies, we will meet with our legal representatives to more fully understand our options before making that determination.”
Funnyman D.L. Hughley has been tapped as the host of the 39th annual NAACP Image Awards, set for February 14th at the Shrine in Los Angeles. One of the original Kings Of Comedy, Hughley recently starred in the HBO special Unapologetic, and is the new host of Def Comedy Jam.

Singer and actress Vanessa Williams will be honored this month by the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization. Williams will be presented with the organization’s Ally for Equality award for her contributions to the GLBT community and her role as Wilhelmina Slater on ABC’s hit show Ugly Betty.
Actor Eddie Murphy has sold the Granite Bay, California house he used to share with ex-wife Nicole Murphy. The property, which features a home theater, arcade, tennis court, pool, spa, 10 bathrooms and a detached guest house, went for $6.1 million.
Lenny Kravitz releases his new album, It Is Time For A Love Revolution, today (February 5th). His last set, 2004’s Baptism, maintained his custom blend of ’70s funk and hard rock rhythms, but represented a difficult time for the musician. After touring behind that album, he withdrew from the public eye, emerging only last July at the Live Earth concert in Brazil, where he remained for four months to renew his energy.
‘Sexual Healing’ Gets A Little Bada Bing
James Gandolfini has been cast in the forthcoming indie feature “Sexual Healing, which stars Jesse L. Martin in a story that follows the last years of famed singer Marvin Gaye. Based loosely on Steven Turner’s book “Trouble Man,” the story follows Gaye (Martin) as he parts ways with Motown and begins a self-imposed exile in Europe. Gandolfini will play Freddy Cousaert, the promoter who guided Gaye through the recording of his biggest-selling album, “Midnight Love.” Gandolfini, whose iconic role of Tony Soprano in HBO’s “The Sopranos” ended last year, is also producing “Sexual Healing” under his Attaboy Films banner. Gary Hamilton’s Arclight Films will executive produce and handle international sales for the $15 million project, while Lauren Goodman will direct from her own screenplay. Shooting is scheduled to begin April 15 in Massachusetts; Ostend, Belgium; and Los Angeles. Arclight will introduce the film to distributors at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin, reports Variety.
