WHO’S TIRED OF REV. WRIGHT?

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama’s former pastor Jeremiah Wright spoke at an NAACP dinner Sunday and at the National Press Club on Monday – with both events covered heavily by the national media. In Sunday’s speech before thousands at the NAACP’s Freedom Fund dinner in Detroit, Rev. Wright said that his sermons – deemed controversial among some circles – have been “descriptive” but “not divisive.” “I describe the conditions in this country,” he said during his lively keynote address. “Conditions divide, not my descriptions.” “I am sorry your local political analysts and your neighboring county executives think my being here is polarizing and my sermons are divisive, but I’m not here to address an analyst’s opinion,” he said. “I am here to address your 2008 theme … (of) change is going to come.”

Yesterday, Wright delivered a speech about the black religious experience to an audience of 300 at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. He said the theology of the black church is a “theology of liberation, it is a theology of transformation and it is ultimately a theology of reconciliation.” He also said the black religious tradition, despite its long history, is in some ways “invisible to the dominant culture.” Wright seemed to enjoy his chance to finally take questions from the press. Rejecting those who have labeled him unpatriotic, he said: “I served six years in the military. Does that make me patriotic? How many years did (Vice President Dick) Cheney serve?” Later, he added: “My goddaughter’s unit just arrived in Iraq this week while those who call me unpatriotic have used their positions of privilege to avoid military service while sending over 4,000 American boys and girls to die over a lie.” In a sermon days after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Wright said “America’s chickens are coming home to roost.” Asked Monday what he meant by “suggesting that the United States brought the terrorist attacks on itself,” Wright challenged the reporter questioning him. “Have you heard the whole sermon?” he responded. “No. You haven’t heard the whole sermon. That nullifies that question.”

OBAMA EXPRESSES OUTRAGE

Sen. Barack Obama said he is “outraged” by comments his former minister, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, made Monday at the National Press Club and is “saddened by the spectacle.” Sen. Barack Obama on Tuesday denounced comments made by the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.
“I have been a member of Trinity Church since 1992. I have known Rev. Wright for almost 20 years,” he said at a news conference in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. “The person I saw yesterday is not the person I met 20 years ago.” Obama said he is outraged by Wright’s remarks that seemed to suggest the U.S. government might be responsible for the spread of AIDS in the black community and his equation of some American wartime efforts with terrorism.

“What particularly angered me was his suggestion somehow that my previous denunciation of his remarks were somehow political posturing,” Obama said, adding that Wright had shown “little regard for me” and seemed more concerned with “taking center stage.” Obama said Wright’s comments were not only “divisive and destructive,” but they “end up giving comfort to those who prey on hate.” Obama said he did not think Wright’s comments accurately portrayed the perspective of the black church and said they “certainly do not portray accurately” his own values and beliefs. Throughout his campaign, Obama has said he wants to be a uniter, said Bill Schneider, a CNN senior political analyst. “Now Rev. Wright comes forward and says many intensely divisive things, particularly along racial lines. That’s exactly the opposite of what Barack Obama is trying to achieve in his life and in his campaign, so he made a very powerful effort today to distance himself and denounce Rev. Wright’s comments,” Schneider said.

ANGELA BASSETT ON ER

Angela Bassett will become a regular cast member on NBC’s “ER” next year during its 15th and final season. The role will be her first full-time gig on a television series. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the actress will play a tough attending physician with a troubled past who returns to Chicago from Indonesia, where she was involved in tsunami relief. Her arrival in the second episode next season promises to shake up the staff at County General. “Angela is a wonderfully talented actress whom I’ve long hoped to work with,” said “ER” exec producer John Wells. In addition to Bassett, original cast member Noah Wyle will join “ER” next season in at least four of the show’s planned 19 episodes.

CHAKA MUST PAY

Los Angeles newspaper Daily Breeze is reporting that Chaka Khan and her son Damien Holland have been ordered to pay more than $1.3 million to the family of a teen who was killed in their home following a dispute in 2004. According to court records, Superior Court Judge Bob Hight approved a default judgment against them in November for more than $1.3 million, plus interest, after Khan and Holland failed to respond to the lawsuit. Khan’s manager, Tammy McCrary, said Friday that the singer never received the lawsuit and knew nothing about the judgment. The family of 17-year-old Christopher Bailey filed a wrongful death and negligence lawsuit against Khan and Holland, 29, after a jury acquitted Holland of Bailey’s murder in May 2006. Holland shot Bailey in the face with an M-16 assault rifle on Sept. 24, 2004. During the trial, Holland admitted he had a friend punch him in the face and initially lied to the police to make it seem as if Bailey attacked him. He also testified he was upset because Bailey was having an affair with his girlfriend, but that the gun went off accidentally. Bailey, in pursuit of a rap career, moved in with Khan and her family to work with Holland in their studio. Bailey’s parents filed the wrongful death and negligence suit in September 2006 against Khan, Holland, Khan’s mother and Khan’s company. While Khan and Holland never responded to the lawsuit, Khan’s mother, Sandra Coleman, settled with Bailey’s family for $500,000, court records show. However, the family contends that was only half of what they agreed to.

EARTH WIND AND FIRE WOW THE MINNEAPOLIS CROWD

Like Earth, Wind & Fire cofounder Verdine White, the usually staid crowd at the 26th annual PACER Center gala let its hair down on Saturday night.
The cocktail-dress and coat-and-tie crowd rushed the stage during EWF’s second number, “Sing a Song,” and danced in the aisles at the sold-out Minneapolis Convention Center auditorium. The dressed-up folks — and the dressed-down ones in jeans and casual tops, too — were having as much fun as the hyperactive and colorful White, EWF’s bassist, with a high forehead, hair down to the middle of his back and flaming-red fringe on his black slacks.
This revelry was in stark contrast to the previous polite sit-down performances by Aretha Franklin, Jennifer Hudson and Michael Bolton for PACER, a Twin Cities organization that helps children with disabilities. Eventually, the security guards cleared the main aisles on Saturday and the dancing was relegated to the side aisles, but the celebratory mood never abated.
EWF was in good form. With three original members from its 1969 lineup and a strong supporting cast, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers provided a highly entertaining mix of party jams, ballads and sophisticated jazz-soul musicianship. Singer Philip Bailey may have grown paunchy, but his voice was in fine shape as he hit those piercing falsetto notes on “Reasons” and “Fantasy.” Energetic singer David Whitworth did a commendable job in the role of leader Maurice White, who has Parkinson’s disease and no longer tours with the band.
In the 1970s and ’80s, EWF was known for elaborate stage spectacles. On Saturday, the showmanship was limited to a little ensemble choreography, incense burning onstage, colorful tops and glorious appliquéd pants on the three original members and, of course, White’s manic moves.
The party-hearty PACER patrons were begging for more after the lone encore number, “That’s the Way of the World.” It’s too bad that EWF’s set was so short, at 70 minutes. But that’s the way of the benefit-gala world,

PRINCE AT COACHELLA

By the end of Coachella, over 100 bands had fanned out across five stages, more than 150,000 people had sweltered through the desert heat and at least as many bottles of water had been guzzled. But there was one who rose above all others. Prince, in his Saturday evening headlining performance, firmly established himself in Coachella lore among famous concerts from years past, including the Pixies and Rage Against the Machine. Prince, for certain, didn’t plan to share the mantle. “From now on, this is Prince’s house!” he declared at the end of his set, which went well beyond midnight. Few seemed inclined to argue after Prince put on a funky, rollicking show that featured passionate performances of classics like “Let’s Go Crazy” and “Purple Rain,” as well as unexpected and creative covers of Radiohead (“Creep”) and the Beatles (“Come Together”).

SLY CONTINUES BEING A NO-SHOW

The skeptics were right about Friday’s scheduled performance by Sly Stone at First Avenue: It’s not happening. Officially blaming “scheduling conflicts” — never mind that the guy has been mostly inactive for three decades — Jam Productions announced the cancellation earlier today. Refunds are being given out at point of purchase. The reclusive rock legend is still scheduled to perform at the Vic Theatre in Chicago on Saturday, and played two club shows in southern Californian this weekend. The word from promoters is that two members of Stone’s band had a previous commitment he didn’t know about and that they couldn’t make the Minneapolis performance. Jam Productions tried to reschedule the show but that didn’t work out.

Back in the 1970s, Stone was notorious for canceling concerts or taking the stage very late. On Friday in Anaheim, his set started more than an hour late but he did appear. After two decades in hibernation, Sly emerged for a surprise cameo appearance at the Grammy Awards in 2006 and he performed a handful of concerts in Europe and the United States last year. These four gigs, including the one in Minneapolis, are his only shows of 2008 announced thus far.

In other concert news, Neil Diamond has added a second show at the Xcel Energy Center on July 20. Tickets to the new date are already on sale through Ticketmaster for $55-$120. Seats also still remain for his July 19 date.

DON’T PASS GO

Hours before he was to be sentenced Thursday for failing to file income taxes, Wesley Snipes cut the federal government three checks for $5 million and delivered them in court, according to reports. The actor and the IRS still must determine how much he owes – plus interest and penalties – after he was found guilty on three counts of willfully failing to file tax returns. He was sentenced Thursday to three years in prison. Snipes’ $15 million payment took prosecutors by surprise. They initially declined to accept the cash, then had changed their mind by day’s end. Reading from a prepared apology, Snipes told the court that he made “costly mistakes” and was the victim of crooked advisers, a liability of wealth and celebrity that attracts “wolves and jackals like flies are attracted to meat.” “I am an idealistic, naive, passionate, truth-seeking, spiritually motivated artist, unschooled in the science of law and finance,” Snipes said. He remains free for the time being and will be notified when it’s time to surrender to authorities. Defense attorney Carmen Hernandez signaled in court that Snipes would pursue an appeal. You might remember this piece of news from 2004.

Wesley Snipes Named As Halle Berry Abuser

“Actor Wesley Snipes has been exposed as the abusive ex-lover of Halle
Berry, who struck the actress so hard, she lost most of the hearing in
her right ear. R&B singer Christopher Williams – who dated Berry in
the early 1990s – has made the startling accusation against the Blade
star after getting upset with the number of people who assume it was
him who dealt the screen beauty the damaging blow. He tells
entertainment news website Eurweb, “The stuff they wrote about (me)
and Halle was totally false. They said something like I busted her
eardrum, and I’m tired of it. I never said it (before) but I’m so
tired of people thinking I’m the guy (who did it). Wesley Snipes
busted her eardrum, not me.”

MICHAEL JACKSON

Fox411 columnist Roger Freidman ways “vultures are circling with cashier’s checks” over the looming May 14th auction of Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch. “Among them: at least some form of the original loan holder, Fortress Investments,” he writes. T.I. says he’ll debut the official first single from his upcoming album tomorrow (April 29) on his Web site http://www.StreetCred.com. “I already know the demand is great, the anticipation is very high, and the wait is almost over man,” the rapper said. “I promise you something special and I will deliver.” A release date has not yet been scheduled for the album, titled “Paper Trail.”
TMZ.com is reporting that the paparazzi have banded together to shun Mariah Carey as payback for her diva behavior while promoting her new CD, “E=MC2.” At a recent event, the singer irked the paps by showing up two hours late, rushing down the red carpet without stopping for pics and wearing sunglasses (apparently a pap pet peeve). TMZ says: “We’re hearing the photogs are planning to ignore the singer as long as it takes to prove their point” that such behavior will not be tolerated.

ACTOR FOUND UNHURT

Family and friends of “That’s So Raven” star Orlando Brown were concerned after losing all contact with the actor for a day, but he has since turned up. The 20-year-old actor and budding musician disappeared Tuesday morning without word. He re-emerged Wednesday and issued the following statement: “It was wrong for me not to inform my manager … about my whereabouts, especially when I am usually so routine and big on communication, but I felt a little lost and needed to get away.” The statement was released Wednesday by his publicist, Elayne Rivers. The actor went on to explain that he was upset at “how we as entertainers are so disrespected at times” after he wasn’t allowed, as expected, to open for the headlining act at a nightclub. “I felt that that was my chance to prove that I was talented and I was really excited,” Brown said. “When I was told that I couldn’t perform… that really hurt. … It got a bit overwhelming and I needed to be alone.” He issued apologizies to his friends and fans and thanked them for their support, ending his statement with “I have no further comments.” Brown has several projects in the works, including a “Raven” spin-off show, tentatively titled The Orlando Brown Show and a second album featuring tracks with top artists Akon and Sean Kingston.

BYNUM ON DIVORCE COURT

In a special two-part episode of “Divorce Court,” televangelist Juanita Bynum will confirm that she is completely through with her marriage to minister Thomas W. Weeks III, who is currently on probation for beating her in a hotel parking lot. In episodes scheduled to air Thursday and Friday, Bynum says she and Weeks are not planning to reconcile, and in fact, she is “done” with the entire relationship. “I can’t speak for him, but I no longer want the marriage,” she told Judge Lynn Toler. Weeks’ divorce attorney, Randy Kessler, said on Tuesday that the divorce is moving forward and a mediation date is scheduled for May 13. “Reconciliation is not in the works and not even being discussed now,” Kessler said, adding that the show appearance could affect the mediation. Bynum also told Toler that she had thoughts of suicide in the wake of her assault.

OJ SIMPSON ON APPRENTICE

Donald Trump is actually thinking about granting a request from Orenthal James Simpson to appear in the next version of his NBC series “The Celebrity Apprentice.” The New York Post’s Page Six reported yesterday that the maligned former football star – famously acquitted of double murder – asked the real estate mogul if he could be a part of the cast when the top-rated show returns next season. “Simpson really wants to do it. Trump and NBC are thinking about it, but are being very cautious,” a source told the column. “There’s a certain amount of heat associated with Simpson.”

NAOMI GOING UGLY

The producers of ABC’s “Ugly Betty” have booked Naomi Campbell to appear as herself on the show’s second season finale, according to actress Becki Newton, who stars as receptionist Amanda Sommers. “She’s going to be in our last episode, which is exciting,” Newton told The Associated Press. “I’ve personally requested that I don’t stand next to her because Amanda would not like to be seen with such a tall, pretty person.” Campbell was originally announced as a guest star last year but didn’t appear in the first season or the beginning of the second season, which was cut short because of the writers’ strike. Meanwhile, the 37-year-old model is now saying that her spitting incident involving a cop at Heathrow Airport – which resulted in her arrest – is uncharacteristic of her usual travel demeanor because she actually finds the friendly skies peaceful. “I travel a lot. I love traveling. It’s peaceful in the air. Nobody can get me there,” she tells WENN, although the incident took place while the plane was parked at the gate. “What has been written about me is out of the hemisphere. Just wrong. I don’t care if they call me a b*tch. A b*tch is someone defending their rights. I’m a fighter.”

In still more Naomi news, paps caught the runway diva attending opening night at the Metropolitan Opera, which presented a new production of “La Fille du Regiment (The Daughter of the Regiment).” The catwalker flew past photographers sporting a high-waisted black pantsuit designed by Yves Saint Laurent, which sponsored Monday night’s gala benefit.

HILLARY GETS MARGINAL VICTORY

We have to give Hilary Rodham Clinton her props. In spite of the odds, she’s found a way to hang in there. In the latest example, the Democratic presidential hopeful got a much-needed win Tuesday by beating front running candidate, Illinois Senator Barack Obama in the Pennsylvania primary. Even though her victory was predicted, the New York senator is still behind the proverbial 8 ball in her efforts to catch and pass Obama in the race to win the most committed delegates for the upcoming Democratic convention this August in Denver. “Some counted me out and said to drop out,” Clinton told cheering supporters who packed a hotel ballroom in downtown Philadelphia. “But the American people don’t quit. And they deserve a president who doesn’t quit either.” Clinton won the state with a 10 percent point margin, adding strength to her argument that she is better placed to win big, populous states that Democrats will need in November’s general election against Republican John McCain.

STAR JONES DIVORCES

It’s been a staple of gossip mags and blogs for months now and it looks like it’s finally happened.
Star Jones Reynolds is divorcing Al Reynolds, her husband of three years. According to Entertainment Tonight, Jones, 46, filed divorce papers March 26 in New York Supreme Court in Manhattan. The papers are reportedly sealed. In a statement to “Entertainment Tonight,” Jones wrote: Several years ago I made an error in judgment by inviting the media into the most intimate area of my life. A month ago I filed for divorce. “The dissolution of a marriage is a difficult time in anyone’s life that requires privacy with one’s thoughts. I have committed myself to handling this situation with dignity and grace and look forward to emerging from this period as a stronger and wiser woman.”

JANET JACKSON GETS GAY AWARDS

Janet Jackson is in the throws of preparing a major world tour to promote her new album “Discipline,” but she’ll take a break on Saturday to receive an honor from one of the biggest gay/lesbian rights groups in the country. Ellen DeGeneres has been tapped by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLADD) to present its Vanguard Award to the 41-year-old star during its 19th Annual Media Awards at Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre. Past recipients include Charlize Theron, Elizabeth Taylor, Jennifer Aniston, Whoopi Goldberg, Antonio Banderas and Liza Minnelli. When asked by E! Online why she feels the organization has chosen her for the award, she replied: “I think it’s because of the work I have done related to AIDS, and also just the support that I’ve given them throughout the years. I’m excited.” Jackson, who will launch her “Discipline” tour on September 11th, discussed all things gay with E! in an extensive interview.

AL WILSON PASSES

Soul singer Al Wilson, best known for his 1973 No. 1 hit “Show and Tell,” died Monday of kidney failure at a hospital in Southern Calif., according to reports. He was 68. Wilson died in a hospital in Fontana, a city about 50 miles east of Los Angeles, said the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin. A native of Meridian, Miss., Wilson was 12 when he began his musical career singing in the church choir and leading his own quartet. In high school, he moved with his family to San Bernardino, Calif., where he worked as a mailman, janitor and office clerk while teaching himself to play drums. After high school, he toured with the group Johnny Harris and the Statesmen before joining the Navy and singing with an enlisted men’s chorus. After two years in the service, Wilson relocated to Los Angeles and began working the local nightclub circuits before joining several R&B vocal groups: first The Jewels, then The Rollers and eventually instrumental combo The Souls. In 1966, Wilson signed to the Soul City label and two years later had his first hit, “The Snake.” Several minor hits followed, including Do What You Gotta Do,” his cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Lodi” and Rivers’ own “Poor Side Of Town.” “Show and Tell” spent one week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hit 100 singles chart in January 1974. The romantic ballad was written and produced by songwriter Jerry Fuller, and first recorded by Johnny Mathis.
Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.

HALLE SIGNS ON FOR NEW FILM PROJECT

The first film project Halle Berry has signed on for since the March birth of her daughter Nahla is the psychological drama “Frankie and Alice,” which follows a woman who has been diagnosed with multiple personality disorder. If that isn’t challenging enough, one of the character’s alter egos is described as a racist caucasian, according to Daily Variety. Berry is also producing the pic with Access Motion Pictures in association with Reality Pictures in Motion. A production date and cast has yet to be announced. Berry has several other films in the pipeline, including the romantic comedy “Nappily Ever After,” for which Berry has proclaimed she will shave her head in real time. She is also due to star opposite her “Monster’s Ball” partner Billy Bob Thornton in “Tulia.” The John Singleton-directed drama was set to roll late last year but was postponed due to Berry’s pregnancy. “Frankie and Alice,” will be the second independent production for Toronto-based Access Motion Pictures, which recently completed “Phantom Punch,” a Sonny Liston biopic starring Ving Rhames and directed by Robert Townsend.

COSBY GIRL TO PLAY HOOKER

Actress Keshia Knight Pulliam, best known as little Rudy Huxtable from the sitcom “The Cosby Show,” will play an imprisoned prostitute in the upcoming film “Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail.”
Lionsgate’s big-screen adaptation of Perry’s popular stage play will also star Derek Luke and is due to begin filming next month in Atlanta for an early 2009 release. The 29-year-old Spelman College grad will play Candy, a prisoner who comes to learn valuable life lessons from new inmate Madea, the gun-toting grandma played by Perry himself. Madea arrives on Candy’s cell block after her arrest for stealing gas and leading police on a freeway chase. During her incarceration, Candy convinces Madea to take custody of her wayward daughter Toni once she is set free. Luke will play an attorney who has a past with Candy. Pulliam recently appeared in Perry’s TBS series “House of Payne” and is launching an Atlanta-based production company for film and television projects that she has in development.

In the first few hours of freedom for Foxy Brown Friday, the rapper reportedly went on a shopping spree in Harlem, ate some soul food and stopped by her childhood home in Brooklyn’s Prospect Heights. It was all captured by cameras for an upcoming VH1 reality show that will chronicle her adjustment to civilian life after serving eight months of a one-year sentence at New York’s Rikers’ Island prison, including 40 days in solitary confinement. The 29-year-old artist, whose real name is Inga Marchand, was sentenced in September 2007 for violating the terms of her probation after she was accused of hitting a woman with a cell phone. At the time, she was on three years’ probation for an August 2004 attack on two manicurists at a Manhattan nail salon. She pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault in the 2004 incident. Foxy has always thought her sentence extra harsh because she is a celebrity.

BEYONCE JAY-Z SPAT NEVER HAPPENED

Reports of newlyweds Beyonce and Jay-Z in a marital tiff hit the Internet late last week sparked by rumors that the rapper told a DJ to stop playing her hit “Crazy in Love” during a Los Angeles tour stop. But TMZ.com claims the reports are false. As the story goes, Jay-Z was performing to a sold-out crowd Wednesday at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles when he decided to rap over some popular songs. When the DJ threw on the couple’s 2003 duet “Crazy in Love,” Jigga reportedly said: “F*** that. Sorry B but f*** that — let’s play something else.” Bey, who was reportedly watching from the side of the stage, was said to have stormed off just before Jay-Z began apologizing. Then later that evening, word has it that the couple had smoothed things out and were cuddling at a private dinner for 40 friends and family – including Michelle Williams, Bey’s mother Tina and sister Solange, Jay-Z’s touring partner Mary J. Blige and new mom Christina Aguilera – at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel’s Tropicana Bar. TMZ, however, says it has spoken to Beyonce’s rep and the singer wasn’t even in Los Angeles at the time. The Web site also cited sources at the concert who said Jay-Z never dissed “Crazy in Love,” and furthermore, never mentioned his wife’s name during the concert.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

If you missed the Democratic presidential debate on ABC Wednesday night, Editor & Publisher called it “perhaps the most embarrassing performance by the media in a major presidential debate in years.” Moderators George Stephanopoulos and Charlie Gibson spent the first 50 minutes obsessed with distractions that only political insiders care about–gaffes, polling numbers, the stale Rev. Wright story, and the old-news Bosnia story. And, channeling Karl Rove, they directed a video question to Barack Obama asking if he loves the American flag or not. Seriously!

People across the country are signing a petition to ABC and other media that says: “Debate moderators abuse the public trust every time they ask trivial questions about gaffes and ‘gotchas’ that only political insiders care about. Enough with the distractions–ABC and other networks must focus on issues that affect people’s daily lives.”
Want to sign it too? We need a bunch of signers for ABC to take this concern seriously.

SINGERS AND ACTRESSES STRIP TO PROVE A POINT

Gabrielle Union and Jill Scott are among the five celebrities chosen by Allure magazine to go completely naked for a pictorial in its May issue. The point of the photo spread, which also includes Zoe McLellan, Ana Ortiz and Angie Harmon, is to celebrate various shapes of the female body. “Here I am, naked in a magazine at size 16 … We are all beautiful, each and every one of us,” said Scott, according to People magazine. Harmon reaffirms that the photos are not about selling sex. “It’s about showing the female body in a positive, beautiful way,” says the actress.

ALICIA KEYS SET WEDDING DATE

Star magazine is claiming that Alicia Keys and her rumored boyfriend Kerry “Krucial” Brothers have made plans to tie the knot on Independence Day in New York. The tabloid says execs at the Oheka Castle – a 32-bedroom French-style chateau on Long Island – have confirmed that a wedding will take place during the July 4th weekend, but have refused to reveal the identity of the bride and groom. Keys and Brothers have long been rumored to be a couple, but neither has spoken in public about their relationship. The songwriting partners are co-owners of the production company KrucialKeys and New York’s Oven Recording Studios. A representative for the R&B star has yet to confirm or deny the wedding reports.

MURPHY DATING EDMONDS LOOK-ALIKE

Folks who spot Eddie Murphy with his new girlfriend may think he’s gotten back together with Tracey Edmonds, but the woman is actually Lara LaRue, the sister of “CSI: Miami” star Eva LaRue. Lara, who some folks think is a splitting image of Tracey, is rumored to be the latest of several women romantically linked with Eddie since his wedding debacle with Tracey in January. I don’t they resemble each other at all. The two met recently at Japanese restaurant Sushiya in Los Angeles, where Lara works as a waitress. Aand they’ve “become inseparable of late,” according to In Touch magazine. They even share the same April 3 birthday. A pal tells In Touch: “He is already telling his friends that he is in love… He’s been sending Lara huge floral arrangements practically every day.”

WHO’S STALKING TYLER PERRY?

In his latest letter to fans, filmmaker/playwright Tyler Perry shared news that he has spent a considerable amount of time dealing with a stalker. “I’m trying to be careful how I say this without inciting this person, but I have a stalker,” he begins. “This person sends several hundred emails a day to my office and has planned our wedding and bought rings and such. She has showed up at my house several times. What’s crazy is I’ve never met this woman nor have I even responded to her emails. I’ve had to increase the guards at my house as well as travel with body guards and I hate that. I hate to have big guys following me around.” Perry’s letter goes on to thank fans for supporting his latest film “Meet the Browns.” He writes: “The great thing about it for me was all of the e-mails that I got from single mothers who needed to see it. I know this movie wasn’t for everybody, but for the people that it spoke to you let me know how it touched you and that lets me know that I’m still on the right track.” He closes the letter by asking fans to do him a favor. “Time magazine is having their top 100 people issue and my name is on the list. Don’t ask me why (smile). And I was just told that YOU have to vote for the person that you like the most,” he writes. “You can vote as many times as you want. I don’t know what this means or why they selected me for this list but since they did, I’d sure like for you to have a voice in this contest.” Perry provides the voting link and warns: “Please read the instructions before submitting your vote.”

LUTHER’S MOM PASSES

Mary Ida Vandross, the mother of late R&B legend Luther Vandross, died last week of natural causes. She was 82. Mrs. Vandross outlived her husband, all four of her children, as well as her only grandson. All died as a result of stroke or diabetes. Per a bio posted on the American Stroke Association website, Mary Ida Vandross was born in Cheraw, South Carolina, as the second child of three.

BRANDY MAKES EPIC MOVE

Singer-actress Brandy, last heard musically through Atlantic Records, has joined the roster of Epic and is expected to drop a new album later this year, according to Billboard. The signing is her first major move since at least December, when she was cleared of all charges stemming from a fatal car crash in 2006, including a recommended misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charge, which carries a penalty of up to a year in jail. But she isn’t completely clear of legal trouble. In March, Brandy was sued by a landscaping company that claimed she owed over $3,576 in expenses for work done between July 2007 and February 2008. Brandy’s publicist claimed the bills were sent to the wrong address. Brandy’s last musical outing, 2004’s “Afrodisiac” via Atlantic, has sold 416,000 copies to date in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

TIGER UNDER THE KNIFE

Tiger Woods followed up his second-place showing at The Masters with arthroscopic surgery on his left knee to repair cartilage damage, his second operation in five years on the same knee, reports the AP. The procedure, which took place Tuesday in Park City, Utah, will sideline him for at least a month while he recovers. “I made the decision to deal with the pain and schedule the surgery for after the Masters,” Woods said. “The upside is that I have been through this process before and know how to handle it. I look forward to working through the rehabilitation process and getting back to action as quickly as I can.” First announced on his Web site, the surgery came two days after Woods finished three shots behind Trevor Immelman in the Masters. He most likely will miss The Players Championship, but should return in time to play the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines on June 12.

FEDS WANT SNIPES IN THE POKEY

U.S. prosecutors have recommended that Wesley Snipes serve a maximum three-year prison sentence and pay a $5 million fine for failing to file his income taxes, according to a tax-season court filing. U.S. Attorney Robert O’Neill of Florida says his goal is to deter other potential tax dodgers by making an example of Snipes, who after years of “brazen defiance” of U.S. tax laws cheated the government of $41 million. “This case cries out for the statutory maximum term of imprisonment, as well as a substantial fine, because of the seriousness of defendant Snipes’ crimes and because of the singular opportunity this case presents to deter tax crime nationwide,” O’Neill wrote. Snipes was convicted in February on three misdemeanor counts of willfully failing to file federal tax returns for 1999-2001. Each count comes with a maximum sentence of one year. The actor was acquitted on two felony charges of filing false claims and fraud in seeking millions of dollars of refunds in other tax years.

COS RELEASES RAP CD

Bill Cosby officially enters the rap game next month with the release of his long-promised album “Cosby Narratives Vol. 1: State of Emergency.” According to the Associated Press, the 70-year-old outspoken opponent of profanity-laced, misogynistic rap has put together an effort that blends his concepts and stories with a hip-hop, pop and jazz soundtrack. His album is “the opposite of what I think is the profanity for no particular reason, the misogyny for no particular reason,” he told the Associated Press. “It really looks at the frustration and the anger that a young man may have.” Assembled by Cosby’s longtime musical collaborator Bill “Spaceman” Patterson, “Narratives” contains rhymes that are provided solely by guest rappers. “I do not rap on any of these things. I wouldn’t know how to fix my mouth to say some of the words,” Cosby said. The subject matter? “The value of an education. The value of respecting one’s self and … giving (listeners) a chance to raise their self-esteem and confidence,” he said. Cosby made the album as a companion to his 2007 best-selling book, “Come on, People: On the Path from Victims to Victors.” And though he doesn’t expect the CD to be a huge hit, it won’t be his last hip-hop venture. “We can do even better,” he said. “The next one will be even more cheerleading.”

THREE 6 MAFIA PROJECT ON THE WAY

Hypnotize Minds/Columbia Records announce the upcoming release of Last 2 Walk, the first new full-length album from Three 6 Mafia since 2006, when the record-breaking history-making Memphis hip-hop ensemble became the first African-American rap group ever to win the Best Original Song Oscar. One of the year’s most heavily anticipated album releases in any genre, Three 6 Mafia’s Last 2 Walk will be available in stores and online Tuesday, June 24. The brainchild of Three 6 Mafia founding members DJ Paul and Juicy J, Last 2 Walk premieres the future club anthem, “Lolli Lolli (Pop That Body)” featuring hardcore rapper Project Pat (Juicy J’s brother and longtime member of the Hypnotize Minds’ hip-hop collective), the rising Three 6 Mafia protégé Young D, and Superpower. The album includes the salacious new single “I’d Rather” featuring Unk, “That’s Right” featuring Akon, and the long-awaited “My Own Way” collaboration with Good Charlotte.

WRIGHT SAYS HANNITY STUCK ON STUPID

The embattled former minister of Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama fired back at the news media during a Chicago funeral service. The Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s remarks were reported in the Chicago Sun-Times. Rev. Wright didn’t mention church member Obama, who has denounced Wright’s inflammatory comments circulated in video excerpts of his past sermons.
But in his eulogy at Saturday’s funeral for the late R. Eugene Pincham, a retired judge, Wright has some choice words for some of his critics, including Fox News commentators Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity. Wright said Pincham befriended “Jews, Muslims, rabbis, imams, fathers in the Catholic church and (Louis) Farrakhan in the Islamic faith.” “Fox News can’t understand that,” Wright intoned. “O’Reilly will never get that. Sean Hannity’s stupid fantasy will keep him forever stuck on stupid when it comes to comprehending how you can love a brother who does not believe what you believe.” Wright’s comments drew a standing ovation from the mega church’s 2,500-seats filled with mourners. Wright also spoke of patriotism and the history of America’s treatment of blacks. He said the country’s founding fathers “planted slavery and white supremacy in the DNA of this republic,” and said that Thomas Jefferson wrote, “God would punish America for the sin of slavery. I guess that makes Thomas Jefferson unpatriotic.”

TAVIS EXITS MORNING SHOW UNDER FIRE

Well, you did it. This isn’t the way you wanted it to happen, but it happened anyway. Just like I knew it would,” begins an open letter from veteran radio personality Tom Joyner to Tavis Smiley. It’s the latest in ongoing drama that followed Joyner’s announcement Friday that Smiley will end his twice-a-week commentaries on the syndicated morning show. When the news broke, folks speculated that he couldn’t handle the backlash he’s been getting from blacks over his criticism of Barack Obama. Although Smiley released a statement saying he was leaving to focus on future projects under his company, The Smiley Group, Inc., Joyner isn’t buying it. “We all know that isn’t the real reason he’s leaving the show,” Joyner writes in the open letter, posted on the radio industry blog Urbansite.com. “The real reason is that he can’t take the hate he’s been getting regarding the Barack issue — hate from the black people that he loves so much. He needed to feel the love. We all do, whether it’s from our radio audience or from people we know personally. He wasn’t feeling any love, so he quit.” As previously reported, Smiley sent a letter to EUR and other media outlets stating that he did not “quit” the Tom Joyner Morning Show effective immediately. “In July I will celebrate my 12th anniversary with the show, and as I discussed with Tom, it is my intention to take on the issues of the day in my commentary twice every week with the same energy, passion and commitment until the end of June,” Smiley wrote. Still, Joyner claims Smiley is leaving because the black community has put him on blast. The cold shoulder was sparked after one of his TJMS commentaries urged listeners not to buy into the hype of Obama. It reached a peak after Smiley called out the senator for choosing to stay on the campaign trail instead of attending his recent State of the Black Union conference in New Orleans. “I’ll also admit that I wanted Tavis to show a little more love to Barack Obama, and I was frustrated over his failure to do so,” Joyner wrote before ultimately suggesting that listeners at least attempt to respect Smiley’s different perspective.
“What Tavis was saying made us think. It had us talking, it had us listening to a different point of view, and it was damn good radio,” Joyner continued. “Tavis on the radio not saying everything that we want him to say is a lot better than not having Tavis on the radio at all. ‘The Tom Joyner Morning Show’ without Tavis gives our listeners one less reason to tune in, and in case you don’t know, all of us in radio — and in black radio especially — are in a battle for our lives. We need good, controversial, compelling radio, and Tavis brought that.” “But because Tavis has not come out and said, ‘I am for Barack Obama,’ everybody has started hating on him and threatening him and clowning him, and he can’t take it,” Joyner continued. “Those of us who know him well know that. If you read his autobiography, ‘What I Know for Sure,’ you know that no matter how deep his love is, if he feels that he’s right or that you’re wrong, he doesn’t back down. Meanwhile, the Tavis Smiley Group has just announced a three-year partnership with Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company that will include exclusive sponsorship of Smiley’s PBS television program, national sponsorship of the 2009 State of the Black Union event to be held next February in Los Angeles and sponsorship of an exclusive five-city tour in which Smiley and Nationwide will join forces to promote economic empowerment and financial literacy. Tour stops will include Columbus, Ohio on May 17; Raleigh, North Carolina on May 31; Richmond, Virginia on June 14; Atlanta, Georgia on June 28; and Dallas, Texas on Nov. 8.

BRYANT GUMBEL LEAVES NFL NETWORK

Bryant Gumbel and the NFL Network have agreed to part ways, the cable channel announced late Friday. After two years of calling games, Gumbel will not return for a third season following a decision that appears to have been mutual. “We’ve agreed that we’d all be better served going in different directions,” Gumbel said in a statement without giving any further details.
The NFL Network declined to comment about possible reasons for Gumbel’s departure, but the channel’s President/CEO Steve Bornstein said in a statement: “We appreciate everything Bryant did in helping us launch our NFL Network game telecasts. Bryant helped create interest in our first foray into televising NFL regular-season games.” The choice of Gumbel as the network’s first play-by-play announcer didn’t go over too well in 2006, when the channel tapped him and analyst Cris Collinsworth as their broadcast team for the Thursday night and Saturday night games late in the season. Although the former “Today” host is a veteran in the broadcasting field, Gumbel had zero experience doing football play-by-play. Gumbel will continue hosting the Emmy-winning “Real Sports” on HBO, while Collinsworth will remain in his analyst chair for the NFL Network. The search for a new play-by-play announcer is scheduled to begin before the channel’s eight-game package starts in November.

TEEN SUES 50 CENT

The 14-year-old boy who was allegedly assaulted by associates of 50 Cent has joined his mother in a lawsuit against the rapper and his label, Universal, for promoting a “gangsta lifestyle.” Filed Wednesday by James Rosemond and his mother Cynthia Reed, the lawsuit claims Universal Music Group and its labels Interscope Records, G-Unit Records and Shady Records are ultimately responsible for the assault because they encourage artists to pursue violent, criminal lifestyles. Rosemond says he was assaulted on a Manhattan sidewalk in March 2007 by four men, including G-Unit rapper Tony Yayo and his employee Lowell Fletcher. The lawsuit claims Rosemond was targeted because he was wearing a T-shirt bearing the name of Czar Entertainment, a management company owned by his father. Czar represents The Game, a former G-Unit rapper who fell out with the group and had become a rival.

IS JAY Z PULLING OUT

Organizers for the annual Glastonbury Festival (June 27-29) are denying reports in London’s Sun newspaper that headliner Jay-Z is planning to cancel his appearance because of low ticket sales.
While tickets for the festival usually sell out in hours, more than 30,000 of the 137,500 tickets available remained unsold as of Sunday afternoon. Critics are blaming sluggish sales on the decision to book Jay-Z alongside more traditional rock/alternative acts Muse and The Verve.
The Sun reported that Jigga wanted to pull out because he’s angered by critics who feel he’s the wrong choice for the legendary festival. There was also talk that organizers were scrambling to book Prince as a replacement since he made such a big splash last year during his 21-night residency at London’s O2 Arena. The rumor picked up steam when it was announced that Jay-Z would also be playing London’s 02 Wireless Music Festival the following week, on July 3.

BEYONCE SHOWING OFF WEDDING RING

Jay-Z may have gone without his wedding ring in the days following his April 4 nuptials, but People magazine reports of Beyonce not only sporting her ring, but waving it for all to see during her husband’s tour stop in the A.T.L. The singer was in the VIP area of Atlanta’s Phillips Arena with Usher when Jay-Z began his hit “PSA,” which has the lyrics: “I got the hottest chick in the game wearing my chain.” According to People, “Usher threw up the diamond Roc sign, while Beyoncé showed off a telltale diamond rock of her own and waved her arms to the beat.”
On Monday night, Jay-Z was at his 40/40 club in Manhattan – without his wife or a wedding ring – cheering on Memphis during the NCAA men’s basketball championship game with friends including rapper Tru Life.
