OPRAH FINISHES 21-DAY CLEANSE

Oprah Winfrey has made it through a 21-day cleanse that she was inspired to undertake after interviewing author Kathy Freston about her book, Quantum Wellness. Three weeks ago, the talk show host said she wanted to “jump-start an inner makeover,” by following Freston’s suggestion of giving up caffeine, sugar, alcohol, gluten or animal products for 21 days. Winfrey kept a blog about her experience on the cleanse. She admitted to nearly giving in at one point, saying: “I want some wine. Bordeaux 82. Just one glass at sunset, almost broke down and had a glass. I didn’t.” On the cleanse’s final day, she ate a large baked potato and fresh green salad. “All ingredients except the olive oil came from my garden,” noted Winfrey. “I got a real kick out of that. I was raised by a grandmother who grew and harvested everything.”
In the end, the TV titan accomplished what she set out to do. “This has been exactly what we intended: enlightening,” wrote Winfrey. “I will forever be a more cautious and conscious eater. That’s my commitment for now. To stay awakened.”

IDOL STAR TO MARRY?

Ruben Studdard, 29, took a step closer to the altar Monday by obtaining a marriage license with his fiancée Surata Zuri McCants, 30. The couple arrived at the Shelby County Probate Office in Studdard’s native Birmingham, Ala. just before noon, according to People.com. “They looked really happy,” an eyewitness told the magazine. There’s no word on the wedding date, but Alabama law requires that couples tie the knot within 30 days of getting their license.

TYSON ESCAPES HITMAN

Mike Tyson was at one time the target of a murder plot by members of the notorious gang Cash Money Brothers, it was revealed Monday at the racketeering trial of CMB associate Abubakr Raheem. According to the New York Daily News, CMB leader Damion “World” Hardy put a hit out on the former heavyweight champ in 2000 after learning that he placed a $50,000 bounty on their heads for the murder of his assistant. Shelby Henderson, an associate of the crack-dealing crew, recalled Monday the discussion about whacking Tyson at a party hosted by Hardy’s mother. She was celebrating the murder of a man who killed another son of hers in drug wars at Lafayette Gardens in Bed-Stuy.

SHAQ RAPS ON KOBE

Shaquille O’Neal apparently is not over his rift with former Los Angeles Lakers teammate Kobe Bryant. The Phoenix Suns center jumped on stage at a club in New York Sunday night and spat an anti-Kobe freestyle that ridiculed his team’s loss to the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals, and blamed the league MVP for ruining his marriage. “I’m a horse, Kobe ratted me out, that’s why I’m getting divorced,” rapped Shaq, likely referring to Bryant’s words during his 2003 rape case, when he told Colorado police that he “should have done what Shaq does … Shaq would pay his women not to say anything.” O’Neal went on to rap about Kobe’s inability to help the Lakers win another championship without him. He spat: “Check it/You know how I be/Last week Kobe couldn’t do without me.” The chorus stated: “Kobe…Tell me how my a** tastes.” Later Monday, Shaq told ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith that he meant no harm by the rhyme. “I was freestyling. That’s all. It was all done in fun. Nothing serious whatsoever. That is what MCs do. They freestyle when called upon. I’m totally cool with Kobe. No issue at all. And by the way, don’t forget, six albums, two platinum, two gold. Anybody who knows me knows I’m a funny freestyler. Check the NBA DVD when I was rapping about Vlade Divac during my first championship run. Please tell everybody don’t make something out of nothing.”

BET AWARDS HOT TICKET TONIGHT

Rihanna, Ne-Yo, Keyshia Cole, Usher, Lil Wayne, Alicia Keys, Chris Brown, Kanye West, Nelly, Marvin Sapp, and Young Jeezy are all on board to perform at BET AWARDS ’08. In addition, LL Cool J, Samuel L. Jackson, Ice Cube, Terrence Howard, Jennifer Hudson, Gabrielle Union, Mary Mary, Lauren London and Kevin Hart will be on hand as presenters, and Jill Scott will perform a special tribute to legendary R&B icon Al Green, who is receiving BET’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Quincy Jones, celebrated producer/arranger/composer, is also being honored this year with BET’s prestigious Humanitarian Award for his outreach to young African-Americans through the Listen Up Foundation. Hosted by actor and comedian D.L. Hughley, BET AWARDS ’08 premieres live from Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium on Tuesday, June 24 at 8:00 p.m.est. Tagged as “the hottest ticket on television,” BET AWARDS ’08 brings together the biggest stars in music, sports and entertainment for an electrifying evening.

JILL SCOTT ANNOUNCES ENGAGEMENT

Jill Scott is apparently hearing wedding bells again. According to ParlourMagazine.com, the songstress was performing at Carnegie Hall over the weekend when she announced her engagement to Jon Roberts, the drummer in her band. According to Parlour, Scott had performed several encore songs when Roberts presented her with a bouquet of flowers and a kiss. She told the crowd about their engagement and was met with wild cheers and applause. Afterward, she gave the audience another encore. This time last year, Scott was in the midst of divorce proceedings with her husband of five years, Lyzel Williams, a DJ and graphic artist. They dated for seven years before exchanging vows in the fall of 2001 in Hawaii. Williams was the source of inspiration for many of Scott’s songs, including “He Loves Me.”

ALFRE WOODARD MOVING

Alfre Woodard, last seen on the small screen in ABC’s “Desperate Housewives,” returns to television opposite Christian Slater in NBC’s new Jekyll and Hyde-themed drama series “My Own Worst Enemy.” According to the Hollywood Reporter, Slater plays a mild-mannered suburban dad, named Henry, whose alter ego, Edward, is a suave spy. Woodard will play Edward’s tough and astute boss at Janus HQ. She also has an alter ego, who gets to interact with Henry.
Woodard is the last major cast addition to “Enemy,” joining Slater, Mike O’Malley, Yara Martinez and Saffron Burrows. The project is slated to air Mondays in the fall at 10 p.m. Woodard received two Emmy nominations in 2006, for her yearlong stint on “Desperate Housewives” and for the miniseries “The Water Is Wide.”

OBAMAS TOPS IN FASHION

Barack Obama’s fashion sense is apparently all the rage at Milan’s fashion week, while the designer of a dress worn by his wife, Michelle, is still trying to deal with the item’s sudden demand. In Milan, Donatella Versace used the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee as inspiration for her Spring-Summer 2009 collection presented Saturday evening. Calling Obama “the man of the moment,” Versace said the new line was designed for “a relaxed man who doesn’t need to flex muscles to show he has power.” Meanwhile, in New York, designer Donna Ricco said she had no idea that Michelle Obama would be wearing her black-and-white leaf-print dress, which is available for $99 on her Web site http://www.donnaricco.com, but was picked up by Mrs. Obama at the White House Black Market store for $148. Apparently she just bought it off the rack,” Ricco tells the New York Daily News. “I didn’t realize until people started calling me, and then I watched the show on YouTube.” Many White House Black Market stores across the country sold out of the dress. In New York, shipments were arriving just in time for next-day demand. Ricco is frantically trying to make 3,000 more for a late-summer delivery.
“She is so classy and so put together,” Ricco says of Michelle Obama. “I try to design dresses that can flatter every woman and every shape, and of course Michelle is in great shape, but for her to just grab that off the rack and have it look so great on her, that’s a real compliment.”

THE TIME IS HERE

Like Tina Turner, the Time is using a performance on February’s Grammy Awards to help launch a concert comeback. All the original members of the 1980s hitmaking Minneapolis R&B ensemble — Morris Day, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Jesse Johnson, Jellybean Johnson, Monte Moir and Jerome Benton – will reunite for 15 shows in Las Vegas at the Flamingo from June 24 to Aug. 2. While Day has performed with a revamped Time for years, the original lineup last worked together in 1990. Both groups are still performing. Ticket information is available at www.harrahs.com.

NAOMI LANDS HUGE DEAL

Just before Naomi Campbell pleaded guilty Friday to assault, French fashion house Yves Saint Laurent issued a statement announcing that the supermodel will front its new autumn-winter 2008-2009 advertising campaign. Photos for the effort, headed by YSL designer Stefano Pilati, were taken in March, about a month before her incident at London’s Heathrow airport. The 38-year-old is also part of Italian Vogue’s all-black July issue, joining models Iman, Alek Wek, Mounia and other black models in the publication’s stand against racial discrimination in the fashion world. Campbell was sentenced to community service in London on Friday for assaulting police on board a British Airways plane. She was also ordered to complete 200 hours of community service and pay over $5,000 in fines.

WATSON BRISTLES AT OBAMA REMARK

Rep. Diane Watson, D-Calif., a longtime supporter of Hillary Clinton, reportedly took offense to a comment made by presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama during his recent meeting with members of the Congressional Black Caucus. Sources told ABC News that during the pow wow on Thursday afternoon, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, a Clinton supporter, suggested that Obama and his campaign reach out to the millions of women still upset and disappointed that Clinton lost in the primaries. Obama agreed that the Democratic Party has a ways to go before it can completely heal, and expressed hoped that the Clinton supporters in the room would help as much as possible. According to Rep. Yvette Clarke, D-N.Y., Obama then said, “However, I need to make a decision in the next few months as to how I manage that since I’m running against John McCain, which takes a lot of time. If women take a moment to realize that on every issue important to women, John McCain is not in their corner, that would help them get over it.” Rep. Watson, reportedly, bristled at his use of the term “get over it,” finding the phrase dismissive and off-putting. “Don’t use that terminology,” Watson told Obama. But, not everyone in the room absorbed the comment in the same manner. “I, personally, as a Hillary supporter, did not take that as something distasteful,” Clarke said. “Nothing like that.” But, Watson “latched on to those three words,” Clarke said.

KISS TYRA’S ASS?

The 35th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards on Friday started off with a win for Tyra Banks in the category of Outstanding Informative Talk Show, which offered one of the more memorable acceptance speeches of the evening. “They said that ‘The Tyra Banks Show’ would last two weeks and we are entering our fourth season this September,” she told the crowd gathered at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood. “I just have a message for everybody out there: When you have a dream, there are going to be so many people out there who tell you you cannot do it, that you are not good enough. And I want you to tell them to kiss your dimply, flat, juicy, bootylicious, skinny, jiggly, saggy, fat ass!” Kristoff St. John of CBS’s “The Young and the Restless” won for Outstanding Supporting Actor, giving the daytime drama three wins overall and the soap star his first Emmy in the adult category. His 1992 win was for Outstanding Younger Actor. The night’s big winners were Ellen DeGeneres, who won her fourth consecutive Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show Host; and Rachel Ray, whose Oprah Winfrey-produced program upset “Ellen” to take the Outstanding Talk Show prize. Although Winfrey has taken herself out of the running since 1999, her presence at the Daytime Emmys was felt in various forms throughout the ceremony. Banks also said in her acceptance speech: “I want to thank Oprah Winfrey for her inspiration. She is the queen. She will always be the queen.” Also, DeGeneres addressed talk that she should follow in Oprah’s footsteps and withdraw her name from contention after winning best talk show host four years in a row. “I’m not going to take my name out,” DeGeneres told reporters backstage. “Oprah has made so many bad choices. Look at her career.” Regis Philbin, a lifetime achievement award recipient Friday, began his acceptance speech by saying: “What a night. Tyra Banks told me to kiss her big beautiful, and I found out that I’m older than the ‘Guiding Light.'” Sherri Shepherd and Cameron Mathison served as co-hosts for the evening. The complete list of winners is listed below.

STEVIE WONDER LOVES PERFORMING

After the first stop of his 14-city North American tour Wednesday, Stevie Wonder told reporters that it was “nice” to be on the road again, and he’s loving the fact that his jaunt takes place during the summer months. “Performing in the summer is always fun, there’s something magical about the summer,” he said during a conference call Wednesday from Long Island. The trek ends July 12 in Canada, and comes on the heels of his successful road show in 2007 that was his first series of concerts in more than a decade. Other stops on the current tour include Chicago, Detroit and Los Angeles. Wonder, 58, says the overall theme of his tour is unity. “I think that we have to really come together for the common ground and be about the perpetuation of life,” Wonder said. “No matter what religion or color or ethnicity that we are, we have to be about the perpetuation of life.”

WOMAN SAYS SHE DOESN’T HAVE A CRUSH ON OBAMA

Actress Scarlett Johansson, who made headlines last week after it was revealed that she and Sen. Barack Obama exchange e-mails on a regular basis, is reportedly upset with media reports that call her support for his campaign a “crush.” “She is a surrogate. They’re not exchanging love letters,” her rep told the New York Daily News. “Everyone seems to be forgetting that she’s engaged [to actor Ryan Reynolds]. Kal Penn is also a surrogate, and no one says he has a crush on Obama.” The actress’ twin brother, Hunter, just so happens to work for Obama’s campaign. The position he holds is not clear. The whole media uproar was sparked by Johansson’s interview last week with Politico.com, where she spoke of offering Obama advice by e-mail and admitted being “amazed” that he finds the time to reply to her. “Someone like the senator, who is constantly traveling and constantly ‘on,’ how can he return these personal e-mails?” she said to Politico.

SHARPTON INVOLVED IN SHAKEDOWNS?

The New York Post is reporting that Al Sharpton and his National Action Network group squeeze money out of corporations by threatening to march on their businesses and boycott their services if they don’t pay up. A rep for General Motors said it had been turning down NAN’s repeated requests for contributions for the past six years, beginning in August 2000. Then, in December 2006, Sharpton threatened to call a boycott of the carmaker over the closing of an African-American-owned GM dealership in The Bronx, and he picketed outside GM headquarters on Fifth Avenue. Last year, General Motors gave NAN a $5,000 donation. It gave $5,000 more this year, a spokesman said, calling NAN a “worthy” organization. In November 2003, Sharpton marched on DaimlerChrysler’s Chicago car show and threatened a boycott over alleged racial bias in car loans. “This is institutional racism,” he said at the time. In May 2004, Chrysler began supporting NAN’s conferences, which include panels on corporate responsibility and civil rights and a black-tie awards dinner to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Last year, Sharpton gave Chrysler an award for corporate excellence. Also in 2003, Sharpton targeted American Honda for not hiring enough African-Americans in management. “We support those that support us,” wrote Sharpton and the Rev. Horace Sheffield III, president of NAN’s Michigan chapter, in a letter to American Honda. “We cannot be silent while African-Americans spend hard-earned dollars with a company that does not hire, promote or do business with us in a statistically significant manner.” Two months after American Honda execs met with Sharpton, the carmaker began to sponsor NAN’s events – and continues to pay “a modest amount” each year, a spokesman said. Almost 50 companies – including PepsiCo, General Motors, Wal-Mart, FedEx, Continental Airlines, Johnson & Johnson and Chase – and some labor unions sponsored Sharpton’s National Action Network annual conference in April, according to the Post. Sharpton says none of them were pressured for cash. “That’s the old shakedown theory that the anti-civil-rights forces have used against us forever,” he told The Post Sunday. “Why can’t they come up with one company that says that? No one has criticized me.” “His way of doing things was, ‘If we’re going to support you and you’re not going to support us, then we have to focus on telling the African-American community not to spend their money,'” said La-Van Hawkins, a partner in Hawkins Food Group, which owns and operates fast-food franchises nationwide. After Hawkins lost an attempt to sue Burger King in 2000 for denying him franchises, he sent Sharpton, attorney Johnnie Cochran and a Miami lawyer to meet with the company’s top execs. BK ended up settling with Hawkins for $31 million. Sharpton did not get a cut, but Hawkins Food Group paid him an annual $25,000 fee, Hawkins said. He said he has donated “over $1 million” to NAN.
Within months of threatening to boycott Pepsi in June 1998 because the company’s ads did not portray African-Americans, the company hired him as a $25,000-a-year adviser until 2007.
Sharpton made the same complaint against Macy’s in 1998. The company appointed Sharpton an unpaid adviser on diversity, but also funds NAN’s annual conference. Last week, Macy’s Senior Vice President Ed Goldberg praised Sharpton as “the kind of guy you can sit down and talk to.”
