The New York Post reported yesterday that Jermaine Dupri threw up into the lap of his girlfriend Janet Jackson while they were celebrating his 36th birthday in New York. According to Page Six, the couple were popping bottles of Jay-Z’s Ace of Spades Champagne and Patrón tequila at Tenjune with fellow celebs Ne-Yo, Busta Rhymes and Ice-T when Dupri became ill.
“Ms. Jackson bolted out of the scene and sped off in her chauffeured Maybach,” a witness was quoted as saying in Page Six.

JANET HOSPITALIZED! WHAT WERE THEY DRINKING?

Janet On Stage

Janet On Stage

We don’t know the exact cause, but a representative for Janet Jackson says the singer has been hospitalized after falling ill shortly before a concert. The news comes on the heels of Jackson’s boyfriend, Jermaine Dupri, getting ill at this birthday party last week and throwing up on her. See the previous story! Was it something in the bottle? According to statement released by W&W Public Relations, the singer, 42, canceled her concert in Montreal on Monday after she “got suddenly ill” during her sound check and had to be rushed to the hospital just before show time. The statement says Jackson is being monitored at the hospital and hopes to reschedule the show. No further information was given about Jackson’s condition. A phone call placed to W&W after hours went unanswered, and a representative did not immediately return an e-mail seeking more information. Jackson is on a North American tour.

PRINCE CAUSING A STIR

Prince

Prince

Part of being a Jehovah’s Witness requires that members go from door to door spreading the religion’s philosophies, which can be a little dangerous if the person toting “The Watchtower” literature is a world-famous music icon. “Sometimes fans freak out. It might be a shock to see me, but that’s no reason for people to act crazy, and it doesn’t give them license to chase me down the street,” says rock star Prince, who converted to the religion in 2001 and says he makes personal visits to strangers’ homes. He tells USA Today that he also carries a Bible with him to business meetings before making any deals. “There are all kinds of possible deals artists aren’t privy to,” he tells the newspaper. “I love to bring the Bible to the table. I start by asking if they believe in God, then: ‘What kind of business do you want to conduct: Transparent or hide the ball?’ I’ll do tours and albums if the deal is clean.”

Rapper/actor Bow Wow has teamed with Walk Across America to encourage voter registration and youth participation in the upcoming presidential elections. Starting on October 1, Bow Wow and Walk Across America will travel to various cities across the United States, including major markets like Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and New York City. Bow Wow and company will travel by foot and bus at several of the stops, which includes local radio stations, colleges and universities, where Declare Yourself and Black Youth Vote will assisting with the voter registration process. “It’s important for the youth to participate because we’re tomorrow’s leaders,” Bow Wow told AllHipHop.com in a statement. “We need to make sure that our voices are heard and have a say in the decisions that will affect our lives and our country for years to come.”

BAILOUT MEASURE FAILS…STOCK PLUMMETS

Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill immediately blamed each other for the failure of a $700 billion bailout package in the House on Monday. Republican leaders speak to reporters on Monday after the bailout bill failed to pass. House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, said there would be no revote on the bill on Monday because members had left the Capitol.
It was unclear in what form the congressional leadership would bring the bill back to the House floor. The stock market immediately dipped hundreds of points after it became apparent that the bill would fail. The Dow closed down 777 points at the end of trading Monday.
The package, which was backed by both the Democratic and Republican congressional leadership as well as President Bush, failed in the House by a vote of 228-205.
A majority of Democrats voted for the bill. A majority of Republicans voted against it. The Republican vote was more than 2-1 against the bill.
After the vote, President Bush was “disappointed” that the House failed to pass the bailout, saying, “We put forward a plan that was big because we got a big problem.”

After just three episodes, FOX has decided to end its freshman sitcom “Do Not Disturb,” which starred Niecy Nash as the head of human resources at a hip New York Hotel. The show averaged slightly over 4 million viewers in its three airings and a disappointing 1.6 rating among adults 18-49. According to Zap2it.com, FOX had initially said the show was being pulled temporarily, but the network has since confirmed it will not return. The comedy will be replaced in the network’s Wednesday-night lineup by repeats of its lead-in, “‘Til Death,” for the time being.

MULTIPLE POLLS INDICATE OBAMA WON DEBATE

Sen. Barack Obama

Sen. Barack Obama

A new USA Today/Gallup Poll shows 46% of people who watched Friday night’s presidential debate say Democrat Barack Obama fared better than Republican John McCain, who received 34% of the vote. Obama won 52%-35% when viewers were asked which candidate offered the best proposals for change to solve the country’s problems. Three in 10 said their opinion of Obama became more favorable after seeing the debate, compared to 14% who said less favorable and 54% who said it didn’t make much difference. More than one-third of viewers, or 37%, said they had less confidence in McCain to fix economic problems after seeing the debate; 23% said more. For Obama, the survey results were 34% more confidence, 26% less.
The CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey showed that 51 % of those polled thought Obama did the better job in Friday night’s debate, while 38 percent said McCain did better.

LUDACRIS PREMIERES TRACKS…TOUR ON THE WAY

Ludacris

Ludacris

Fans of rap star Ludacris were on hand at New York’s Tribeca Cinemas Thursday night to hear the unveiling of four new tracks from his Def Jam album “Theater of the Mind” ahead of its Oct. 21 release. The songs played were “MVP,” produced by DJ Premier and enhanced by the producer’s trademark strong drums, notes Billboard; the Clinton Sparks-produced “Call Up the Homies,” featuring the Game and Willy Northpole; “Last of a Dying Breed” featuring Lil’ Wayne, and the T-Pain-assisted “One More Drink.” “I did this song because when you’re at a club, the more drinks you have the better them mutherf**kers look,” Ludacris said of the latter.
After the listening session, the audience was ushered into a screening room to view a behind-the-scenes video of Ludacris’ current single and video, “What Them Girls Like” featuring Chris Brown and Sean Garrett. It was followed by the video for another track, “Undisputed,” which features boxer Floyd Mayweather as Ludacris’ coach.

CIARRA’S CLOTHES!

R&B singer Ciara claims she was wearing underwear during the photo shoot for Vibe’s October cover, even though it looks as if she’s completely naked. It’s “very, very upsetting and somewhat misleading,” she told MTV News of the photo. However, Vibe Editor-in-Chief Danyel Smith says not only was Ciara indeed fully naked for the shoot, but the whole thing was her idea. “I have so much respect for Ciara, and Ciara was so happy when she pitched this idea to us, and the photos are actually striking and beautiful,” Smith said during an interview with New York’s KISS-FM. “It was pitched to me in a way that it was time [for her] to grow up and be beautiful and be free and be all the things she wanted to be.” Ciara says the intent of the photo shoot – as far as she was concerned – was to celebrate the human form. At the end of the session, she walked away believing everything had gone great. It wasn’t until she saw the photos weeks later that she realized something was missing.

O.J. Simpson and co-defendant Clarence Stewart face 12 charges that include kidnapping, armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and coercion. Simpson has repeatedly insisted he was unaware any members of his gang were armed prior to the alleged robbery in Las Vegas on Sept. 13, 2007. Four other involved men have pleaded guilty to lesser charges with the agreement to testify. One of them, Simpson’s former friend Walter Alexander, told the court Wednesday that Simpson asked them to carry weapons for their own protection and to “look tough” by displaying the guns in their waistband, reports the Associated Press.

The New York Giants on Wednesday suspended wide receiver Plaxico Burress for one game after announcing he had violated unspecified team rules. General manager Jerry Reese and coach Tom Coughlin informed Burress of the suspension Wednesday morning before the team held a bye-week practice, according to the Associated Press. The suspension will keep Burress on the sidelines while his 3-0 team battles the Seattle Seahawks on Oct. 5. While the Giants did not specify why Burress was suspended, FoxSports.com said that he failed to show up for work on Monday and did not call in or answer phone messages to explain his absence.

CeCe BUILDS CONDOS

CeCe Winans will be in Atlanta on Oct. 2 at 9 a.m. to announce the grand opening of The LIGHT at Brookhaven, a condominium community built on the guiding principles of her life — fellowship, family and the power of personal belief. The 17-story complex offers one-bedroom and two-bedroom condominium homes at the apex of Brookhaven and Buckhead, two of Atlanta’s most sought-after neighborhoods. Against the backdrop of a national housing crisis, Winans says she decided, “I could help people affected by the housing downturn by working to provide them with beautiful, affordable homes in a comfortable, nurturing environment.” The LIGHT at Brookhaven, located at 3833 Peachtree Road, NE, offers an environment for those buyers looking for more — a richer, deeper involvement with their neighbors and in their community, a press release states.

CHRIS ROCKS CALLS OUT BILL CLINTON

Former President Bill Clinton has been making the TV rounds this week to promote his Clinton Global Initiative charity organization, and folks are noticing that he’s spent little time trying to plug his party’s candidate for president, Barack Obama. During Monday’s visit to “The View,” Clinton had very nice things to say about Republican candidate Sen. John McCain, even praising his help in improving relations with Vietnam during the Clinton administration. But, glowing support for Obama was not as forthcoming. Huffington Post blogger Jason Linkins put it this way: “If you happened to catch ‘The View,’ you likely marveled at Bill Clinton’s ability to call the 2008 election for Barack Obama without actually suggesting that Obama, as a candidate, had any particular quality that would enable the win, which would instead come about through a confluence of happy electoral accidents.” It appeared to be more of the same during Clinton’s chat with David Letterman Monday night, as the former president twice referenced his wife Hillary as someone who took an early stand against the mortgage crisis that led to Wall Street’s current collapse. He never once mentioned that Obama was speaking out early and often against subprime mortgages as well. For Obama supporter Chris Rock, also a guest on “The Late Show With David Letterman” Monday night, it was the last straw.
“Is it me or he didn’t want to say the name Barack Obama?” Rock said to laughter by both Letterman and the audience. “Hillary ain’t runnin! …I love Hillary, but she lost! She got a lot of votes, she did. The Patriots got a lot of points, too, but they lost to the Giants!

Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain are locked in a tight political battle for the White House and, as Congress consider a historic trillion dollar Wall Street bailout, it’s the economy that has emerged as a critical issue in the presidential election.

Fifty-three percent of registered voters in this new ABC News/Washington Post poll call the economy the single most important issue in the election, up 12 points in two weeks to an extraordinary level of agreement. The public is cool to the bailout itself, underscoring economic uncertainty. Eight in 10 are worried about the economy’s future, half of them very worried. Personal concern runs high as well; six in 10 are worried about their family’s finances. And 83 percent say the country’s seriously off on the wrong track, back within a point of its record high — set just this June — in polls dating to early 1970s.

All these work for Obama.

OBAMA GETS 11 MILLION DOLLARS AND A BOOST IN THE POLLS

Sen. Barack Obama raised $11 million for his campaign and the Democratic Party at two star-studded fundraising events in Southern California Tuesday night, including one featuring a concert by Barbra Streisand. The presidential nominee’s night began with a reception and dinner at $28,500 per person at the famous Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills, and ended with Streisand’s performance at the nearby Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel, which cost $2,500 per ticket. Before a crowd of some 800 people packed into the hotel’s ballroom, Obama started his speech by addressing the current Wall Street mess, stating: “I am not in a celebratory mood,” before citing a host of problems with falling incomes and joblessness. “A whole lot of Americans have been going through their own quiet storm,” he said. Obama also sought to reassure concerned donors, as polls show him in a dead heat with John McCain.

OBAMA ERASES MCCAIN CONVENTION BUMP

At this snapshot in the race, there is no other issue — not pigs, not sexism, not the surge, not anything, really, that bodes particularly well for Team McCain. It’s 48-43 in the latest New York Times/CBS poll — the Palin bounce bouncing right back to where we were pre-conventions. Ditto Quinnipiac, which gives Obama a 14-point lead among women and a 49 – 45 lead nationwide. “Despite an intense effort to distance himself from the way his party has done business in Washington, Senator John McCain is seen by voters as far less likely to bring change to Washington than Senator Barack Obama,” Robin Toner and Adam Nagourney reports in the Times write-up. “The latest poll indicates ‘the Palin effect’ was, at least so far, a limited burst of interest. . . . The Times/CBS News poll suggested that Ms. Palin’s selection has, to date, helped Mr. McCain only among Republican base voters; there was no evidence of significantly increased support for him among women in general.”

R. KELLEY WANTS ONLY THE LEGAL

In his first interview since being acquitted of child pornography charges, R. Kelly says he was betrayed by those closest to him, but hopes he can put the case behind him for good and move forward. “I can’t keep answering these questions,” he told BET’s Toure in a special that aired Tuesday night. “If you were charged with something and found innocent, then you can’t be found guilty for being found innocent.” The 41-year-old singer was arrested in 2002 for allegedly videotaping himself having sex with a 13-year-old girl. At his trial, prosecutors were unable to verify the authenticity of the tape, or the identity of the female seen in the footage. Kelly was cleared of all 14 charges. When asked by Toure if he is attracted to teenage girls, Kelly replied: “When you say teenage, how old do you mean?” He added: “I have some 19-year-old friends, but I don’t like anybody illegal if that’s what we’re talking about, underage.”

KANYE RESPONDS TO FAN COMPLAINTS

Kanye West says he has re-recorded his new song “Love Lockdown” after people posting feedback on his Web site complained about the original version. “Your prayers have been answered!! There’s a new version of ‘Love Lockdown’ coming,” he wrote. “We used new taiko drums, and I re-sung it. … It’s being mastered now.” The artist used the recent MTV VMA awards to debut the song, which features him crooning in a heavily Auto-Toned singing voice. A number of fans on Ye’s blog felt the Auto-Tone was too much.

Charles Rangel

The Congressional Black Caucus says it offers its “100 percent support” to Democratic congressman Charlie Rangel despite Republican calls for him to step down as House Ways and Means Chairman pending an Ethics Committee investigation into his taxes. The Caucus support came one day after Monday’s inconclusive 90-minute meeting between Rangel and Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, who also announced her support for Rangel. The Harlem Representative admitted last week that in recent years he has underpaid his taxes by about $10,000. His lawyer says Rangel flubbed his tax return by failing to record some $75,000 of rental income he received from a beach house he owns at a posh Dominican Republic resort. Rangel says it was an honest mistake, explaining that he didn’t know how much income he received from the property because his Dominican business partners would “start speaking Spanish.”

Hip-Hop star Pharrell a cast of celebrities in a new $300 million dollar advertising campaign being launched by technology behemoth, Microsoft. On September 4, Microsoft debuted two spots featuring comedian and spokesman Jerry Seinfeld and company founder Bill Gates, as part of the biggest ad spend in the company’s history. One advertisement features Seinfeld and Gates shoe shopping while engaging in idle chatter and the second features Seinfeld and Gates engaged in conversation at a blue collar family’s dinner table. Despite being on the air for less than two weeks, the company is pulling the ads, in favor of a new campaign featuring Williams, Deepak Chopra and actress Eva Longoria. A Microsoft spokesman said the ad campaign was “completely in accordance” with the company’s plans and denied that a lukewarm response from consumers was to blame for the change. The “second phase” of Microsoft’s ad campaign featuring Pharrell has the tagline: “Windows. Life without walls.”

TEMPTATIONS HITMAKER PASSES

Norman Whitfield

Norman Whitfield

The man who wrote some of Motown’s biggest hits, Norman Whitfield, has died in Los Angeles. Published reports say the prolific producer passed away yesterday September, 16 from complications of diabetes. He was 65.

According to Wikipedia, Whitfield began writing for Motown when he was 19 years old. He is credited as being one of the creators of the Motown Sound, as well as one of the major instrumental figures in the late-60s sub-genre of psychedelic soul.

Whitfield began hanging around at Motown’s Hitsville U.S.A. offices, trying to get a chance at working for the growing label. Berry Gordy recognized Whitfield’s persistence and hired him in the quality control department that determined which songs would or would not be released by the label.

Whitfield eventually joined Motown’s in-house songwriting staff. Initially he had a few minor successes, but he found his place at Motown when he began producing the recordings of his songs. His big break came when he took over Smokey Robinson’s role as the main producer for The Temptations in 1966, after his “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” performed better than Robinson’s “Get Ready” on the pop charts.

Between 1966 and 1974, Whitfield produced nearly every song by The Temptations.

Highlights of the hits of Norman Whitfield are:

OBAMA’S NEW TV AD SCORING POINTS

The Obama campaign has released a new TV ad that appears to making points with voters and pundits alike. In the ad, which runs 2 minutes, the Illinois senator and Democratic presidential contender lays out his economic agenda and positions himself as an above-partisanship leader.

Read the script of the ad:

In the past few weeks, Wall Street’s been rocked as banks closed and markets tumbled. But for many of you — the people I’ve met in town halls, backyards and diners across America — our troubled economy isn’t news.

600,000 Americans have lost their jobs since January. Paychecks are flat and home values are falling. It’s hard to pay for gas and groceries and if you put it on a credit card they’ve probably raised your rates.

You’re paying more than ever for health insurance that covers less and less. This isn’t just a string of bad luck. The truth is that while you’ve been living up to your responsibilities, Washington has not.

That’s why we need change. Real change. This is no ordinary time and it shouldn’t be an ordinary election. But much of this campaign has been consumed by petty attacks and distractions that have nothing to do with you or how we get America back on track.

Here’s what I believe we need to do.

Reform our tax system to give a $1,000 tax break to the middle class instead of showering more on oil companies and corporations that outsource our jobs. End the “anything goes” culture on Wall Street with real regulation that protects your investments and pensions. Fast track a plan for energy ‘made-in-America’ that will free us from our dependence on mid-east oil in 10 years and put millions of Americans to work. Crack down on lobbyists – once and for all — so their back-room deal-making no longer drowns out the voices of the middle class and undermines our common interests as Americans. And yes, bring a responsible end to this war in Iraq so we stop spending billions each month rebuilding their country when we should be rebuilding ours. Doing these things won’t be easy. But we’re Americans. We’ve met tough challenges before. And we can again. I’m Barack Obama. I hope you’ll read my economic plan. I approved this message because bitter, partisan fights and outworn ideas of the left and the right won’t solve the problems we face today. But a new spirit of unity and shared responsibility will.

NICOLE RICHIE LOST IT

The New York Post is reporting that Nicole Richie went ballistic outside a New York nightclub when a tourist attempted to take her picture. According to Page Six, the socialite grew irritated with the young fan who was standing outside of an afterparty held at Country Club, hosted by Mark Ronson’s fashion designer sister Charlotte as part of New York Fashion Week.
A source tells the publication: “A young, Swedish tourist was trying to take her photo. Richie shouted, ‘I’m not an animal’ then jumped over the velvet rope, ripped the camera out of the girl’s hand, and smashed it to the ground.”

POITIER AND CARROLL AFFAIR

In her new book “The Legs are the Last to Go,” veteran actress Diahann Carroll writes candidly about her courtship with screen legend Sidney Poitier, alleging that he double-crossed her during their affair. Carroll claims that the actor persuaded her to divorce her husband Monte Kay, and that Poitier also said he would leave his wife to be with her. But when Carroll got her divorce, the Oscar winner didn’t keep up his end of the bargain. Carroll said she dated another man out of frustration, which didn’t sit well with Poitier. “Sidney called me at my hotel . . . ‘You b*tch, whore, tramp,’ he yelled. ‘I know he just left your bed. I won’t have you running around with other men. You belong to me!'” the New York Post quoted her as writing in the book.

She wrote that Poitier later told her he’d finally left his wife, Juanita Hardy. He even bought Carroll a ring and made her decorate a 10-room Riverside Drive apartment he’d bought. “I was only home a few days when he called to say his wife was having second thoughts. Our wedding plans would have to be postponed,” wrote Carroll.
She added: “When the apartment was ready and I was about to move my daughter in with me, Sidney told me he didn’t want her there . . . He changed the locks so I couldn’t get in. Then he made me write him a check to offset his purchase and decorating costs. I did as I was told, submissive and desperate.”
Despite her decision to detail their relationship drama, Carroll says Poitier, who did not comment on the book, continues to be her friend.
“Sidney and I are now friends. That’s a lovely thing that comes as you age – forgiveness and perhaps a relaxing of standards,” wrote Carroll.
The book, from Amistad, will be released next week.

NATE DOGG SUFFERS SECOND STROKE

Singer Nate Dogg is reportedly hospitalized in serious condition after suffering another stroke, his second since December 20 of last year, AllHipHop.com reported Monday afternoon. The Web site is quoting sources who say the artist, born Nathanial Hale, is unable to breathe on his own. The crooner was already partially paralyzed on the left side of his body as a result of the first stroke, although it didn’t leave him with any major brain damage. In June, Nate Dogg was arrested for allegedly making threats against his former girlfriend as he followed her in another car on the 405 Freeway in Los Angeles.

ALICIA KEYS NAMED IN DIVORCE SUIT

Alicia Keys continues to deny that she has anything to do with the split of producer Swizz Beatz and his estranged wife Mashonda, but, there are new reports that the Grammy winner could be named as “the other woman’ in divorce papers. The New York Daily News is reporting that the producer’s wife of almost five years and mother of his 1-year-old son, Kasseem Dean Jr., got upset when she heard about a supposed birthday party Keys threw for her husband at midtown’s Louis Vuitton store, where guests included Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony and Robin Thicke.
“Alicia introduced Swizz as ‘The man of the hour and my boo,'” the Daily News quote of an insider. “Mashonda has had enough. She put her career on hold to be a wife and mother. She’s tired of pretending she’s deaf, dumb and blind to what’s going on. She can’t believe how disrespectful Alicia is being.”
Mashonda is said to have also gone off when she found a flirtatious e-mail from Keys on Swizz’s BlackBerry. According to sources, she fired back a reply, reminding the singer he was still her husband.

OBAMA SAYS NO COMMENT

Barack Obama’s campaign has declined to comment about the racist overtones of the iniquitous “Obama Waffles” that were being sold at a conservative political forum Saturday in Washington. Mark Whitlock and Bob DeMoss, two writers from Franklin, Tenn, rented a booth to sell their “Obama Waffles” waffle mix that came in a box depicting the Democratic presidential candidate as a racial stereotype on its front and wearing Arab-like headdress on its top flap.

Obama is portrayed with bulging eyes and big lips as he stares at a plate of waffles and smiles broadly. On the back of the box, Obama is depicted in stereotypical Mexican dress, including a sombrero, above a recipe for “Open Border Fiesta Waffles” that says it can serve “4 or more illegal aliens.” The recipe includes a tip: “While waiting for these zesty treats to invade your home, why not learn a foreign language?” Whitlock and DeMoss said the “Obama Waffles,” offered at $10 per box, were meant as political satire. But Values Voter Summit organizers cut off sales of the boxes on Saturday, saying they had not realized the boxes displayed “offensive material,” reports the Associated Press.
David Nammo, executive director of the lobbying group FRC Action, said summit organizers were told the boxes were a parody of Obama’s policy positions but had not examined them closely.

HUDSON TO WED PUNK

After a courtship of less than a year, Jennifer Hudson is engaged to marry her boyfriend David Otunga, better known to VH1 viewers as “Punk” from the second season of “I Love New York.” The 27-year-old Harvard Law School grad was in Los Angeles with J-Hud Friday night to celebrate her 28th birthday when he popped the question with a Neil Lane diamond ring, according to reports. The VH1 reality star Tiffany “New York” Pollard christened Otunga with the nickname Punk during her show’s second season in late 2007. He was a finalist on the show, but lost his chance at love with Pollard to winner Ezra “Buddha” Masters. Otunga has worked with the Rev. Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow PUSH Coalition. He and Hudson are both from Chicago.
