KWAME GOES TO JAIL

Kwame Kilpatrick

Kwame Kilpatrick

Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was sentenced to four months in jail Tuesday for the so-called “sex-and-text scandal.” Wayne County Circuit Judge David Groner called him “arrogant and defiant” and questioned the sincerity of a guilty plea that ended his career at City Hall. Kilpatrick declined to speak in court, but his lawyers urged the judge to look at his entire career, not just the crimes that threw local government into disarray for months. Kilpatrick admitted lying while testifying last year in a civil lawsuit filed by former police officers who accused him of illegally demoting or firing them. He and chief of staff Christine Beatty, both 38, were accused of having an affair and denied it, but text messages obtained by a lawyer in the case — and later the Detroit Free Press — clearly contradicted them. The jail sentence was part of a plea agreement reached last month. Groner followed that deal but said Kilpatrick would not get time off for good behavior, potentially up to 20 days in this case.

LIFT EVERY VOICE AND VOTE

The Minnesota State Baptist Convention, The Black Ministers Alliance of the Twin Cities and The Church of God In Christ, will hold a “Get Out The Vote” Rally this Sunday, November 2, 2008 at New Salem Baptist Church, 2519 Lyndale Avenue North, Minneapolis at 5:00 PM. At the same time on Sunday, another MSBC Church, New Hope Baptist Church, 712 Burr Avenue, St. Paul, MN will also hold a rally, linking the Black Communities of Minneapolis and St. Paul to encourage voters to get to the polls on Tuesday, November 4th, for this historic election. The rally will be a musical star studded event featuring artists Jevetta Steele, Sounds of Blackness, James Grear, Excelsior Choir, Darnell Davis & Remnants and New Salem Baptist Church choir among the many groups scheduled to perform. In addition, local Politicians both Democrat and Republican have been invited to attend the bi-partisan Rally and most have accepted. The purpose of the rally is to get information to the communities on where to vote, how to get transportation to the polls if needed and to answer any voting questions people may have. The event is free and open to the public.

THE DO’S AND DON’TS OF VOTING
by Jean Fountain

Do vote on November 4. It is a privilege and your right and one of the easiest ways to effect change. Do be an informed voter. Get to know the candidates, and vote the issues. Do know your polling place. Check your registration card, call your local election office, or call 866-OUR-VOTE if you do not know your location. Do make-sure you are on the list of registered voters before November 4. You may verify your status by checking the Web-site or calling the election office or board of elections for your county, city, or state. Do make sure you know the voter identification rules for your state. To be safe, bring your driver’s license or another photo ID. If your state allows same day registration, you may need at least two pieces of identification.
Do be prepared for long lines at the polling places. A record turnout is expected. Vote early if you can. Don’t wear campaign paraphernalia, such as T-shirts, buttons, or hats to the polling places. This will be considered campaigning, and you may be turned away. Don’t leave the polling place without voting. Poll workers are there to help you with the process of voting. If you encounter a problem that cannot be resolved, call 866-OUR-VOTE for assistance. Barack Obama pulled a huge audience last night. Nielsen just reported that 33.5 million people watched Sen. Barack Obama’s infomercial last night. The simulcast aired on CBS, FOX, NBC, Univision, BET, MSNBC, and TV One between 8pm and 8:30pm EST. On an average Wednesday night, these networks draw a combined average of 30.3 million average viewers during that half-hour daypart. In 1996, Ross Perot ran a similar infomercial on three networks and drew almost 22.7 million viewers.

BEYONCE CRASHES JAY Z’s CONCERT, AGAIN

Beyonce

Beyonce

While Lil Wayne, Jay-Z and Ne-Yo rocked the crowd at Power 105′s Powerhouse concert Tuesday night in New Jersey, all three were upstaged by a surprise appearance from Beyonce.
The singer entered the stage during her husband Jay-Z’s set and with two background dancers performed the choreography from her new song, “Single Ladies.” Without saying or singing one word, she performed the dance routine from the video in black stretch pants and a black turtleneck, then ended the set by flashing her huge wedding ring before walking off.
The other headline of the night was an anticipated joint performance that never happened. Many fans thought that Jay-Z would join Wayne for their duet “Mr. Carter,” but Weezy rapped alone on the track. Jay-Z was the evening’s last performer and ended his set by reminding the crowd to vote on Nov. 4. “This is the most important election ever,” he said. “Rosa sat so Martin could walk, Martin walked so Obama could run and Obama is running so we all could fly.”

NATALIE COLE RETURNS TO THE STAGE

Natalie Cole

Natalie Cole

Natalie Cole has resumed her tour schedule following a break to address problems with her kidney. The singer, however, must undergo dialysis three times a week, for three hours a day while traveling. “The dialysis is to wash my blood, to keep my kidneys functioning,” she told People magazine. “When they put me in the hospital, [my kidneys were] only about 8 percent [functioning].” The kidney problem was in addition to her ongoing battle with hepatitis C. She is currently virus negative and says of her return to the road, “It feels great to be back.”
“I feel sturdy and strong,” the 58-year-old Grammy-winner told People Tuesday at a CD signing for her new album, “Still Unforgettable,” in L.A. “And my voice is still here! It’s almost like a miracle because [the treatment] didn’t affect my [singing].” Cole, who was hospitalized in September after suffering a setback in her treatment, described battling the liver disease as her “biggest challenge” ever.

EL DEBARGE IS SENTENCED

El Debarge Mug Shot

El Debarge Mug Shot

El DeBarge was sentenced to two years in state prison Tuesday for violating his probation on a 2007 drug case in which the singer was found in possession of crack cocaine. The former R&B crooner, best known as the former lead singer of the ‘80s group DeBarge, was immediately taken to California State Prison in Lancaster to begin his sentence, reports TMZ.com. The ruling follows DeBarge’s arrest on Monday in Los Angeles. In that case, he was charged with possession of a controlled substance.

ABC/CNN WILL NOT AIR OBAMA SPECIAL

Sen. Barack Obama

Sen. Barack Obama

At 8 p.m., EDT tonight, ABC and the CW will be the lone broadcast networks not running the half-hour ad from Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. CNN also has opted out, deciding to air its normal programming at that time. Instead, ABC will air its struggling series “Pushing Daisies,” while the CW will counter program with its usual show in the time period, “America’s Next Top Model.” The Obama campaign bought a half-hour of airtime on NBC, Fox and CBS on October 9, spending about $1 million per network, according to the Hollywood Reporter. But, ABC was absent from the list, and the network refused to explain its programming intentions. One source said ABC offered the airtime, but the Obama campaign, for whatever reason, declined to buy an ad. Cable networks airing Obam’s 30-minute special on the economy include BET, TV One, MSNBC and Spanish-language network Univision.
Meanwhile, Obama’s half-hour program had yet to be delivered to networks as of last night. Sources said the ad is almost certainly taped, rather than a live telecast, and can be submitted as late as this morning. I’ve heard that Obama will do a live segment at the end from a campaign rally.

POSSIBLE MOTIVES IN HUDSON CASE

Julia Hudson

Julia Hudson

The Chicago Tribune quotes a police source who said the motive in the killings of Jennifer Hudson’s mother, brother and nephew could be related to ongoing disputes between the suspect and his estranged wife, Julia Hudson, and her family. One of the arguments centered on missed car payments, sources said. William Balfour, 27, remains the focus of the triple-homicide investigation. Hudson’s mother and brother had kicked him out of their Englewood home in the past, sources said. Julia Hudson also told police that Balfour had threatened the family. A source said Balfour told Julia Hudson he would kill her if he found out she had a boyfriend, despite the fact that he had other girlfriends. Officers said Balfour was cooperative during questioning on Friday night, but he stopped talking when police suggested he take a lie detector test.

LL NOT COOL WITH JANET TOUR

LL Cool J

LL Cool J

Just as Janet Jackson’s traveling Rock Witchu show was getting back on its feet following postponed dates, opening act LL Cool J announced he has quit the tour due to unnamed “scheduling conflicts.” Reps for LL made the announcement late Monday, reports the Associated Press. His exit comes after Jackson, 42, was forced to cancel a string of earlier concerts because of a bout of migraine-associated vertigo. She recently resumed while being treated for the illness, which is characterized by dizziness, imbalance and other symptoms. No replacment has been named.

COMMON RELEASES NEW CD

Common

Common

Five months after Common’s new album “Universal Mind Control” was scheduled to arrive in stores, Geffen will finally release the disc on Dec. 9, Billboard reported Tuesday. Two songs, “Announcement” and “Universal Mind Control” both of which feature Pharrell Williams, have already been released. The album also includes two fresh songs, “Gladiator” and “Inhale.” Among other changes to the album since its original release date, “Punch Drunk Love” now features Kanye West rapping the catchy chorus “Am I crazy, or was you giving me the eye?” Also, “Sex 4 Sugar,” which Common previously described as a conversation with a dancer, now has faster drums. “Everywhere,” which was formerly called “Runaway” and set to feature Santogold, now sports a dreamy layered chorus, sans Santogold, over a guitar riff similar to Pat Benatar’s “Love Is a Battlefield.”

LABELLE IS BACK!!

LaBelle, the female trio that offered up funk/soul/pop music that laced the airwaves in the ‘60s and ‘70s has returned with a new album called “Back to Now.” The group’s sound, melding the famed R&B/gospel poeticism of Patti LaBelle, rock antics of Nona Hendryx, and the soul sensibilities of Sarah Dash, is just as we left it 30 years ago, but reignited and retrofitted for the now. The dynamic vocalists’ powerful songs and harmonies mirror the energized multi-genre sound they brought to music three decades ago, but similarly, their lyrics echo the past and are quite relevant today. “The music that we did then was political, and now – it wasn’t intentional – but we have four songs that are very political,” group member Patti LaBelle described. “We’re almost at the place we were years ago. When you hear some of the song, you’ll thing that we wrote them purposely to go along with what is happening now. So it’s back and it’s now. It’s very timely.” For more on LaBelle and their triumphant return, check out www.labelleisback.com.

OBAMA ASSASSINATION PLOT STOPPED

Sen. Barack Obama

Sen. Barack Obama

ATF agents said Monday that they have broken up a plot by two neo-Nazi skinheads to assassinate Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and shoot or decapitate 88 black people. In court records unsealed Monday in U.S. District Court in Jackson, Tenn., agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives said the duo planned to rob a gun store and target a predominantly African-American high school in a murder spree that was to begin in Tennessee, reports the Associated Press. The skinheads did not reveal the name of the high school, but said they wanted to kill 88 African-Americans, including 14 by beheading. The numbers 88 and 14 are symbolic in the white supremacist community, referring to a 14-word phrase attributed to an imprisoned white supremacist: “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children” and to the eighth letter of the alphabet, H. Two “8″s or “H”s stand for “Heil Hitler.” The men also sought to go on a national killing spree after the Tennessee murders, leading up to an assassination of Obama as their final deed, Cavanaugh told The Associated Press.

Chicago police have confirmed that the body of a young boy found Monday morning in an SUV was the missing nephew of Jennifer Hudson, police Supt. Jody Weis said Monday afternoon.
Authorities found 7-year-old Julian King inside of a white Chevrolet Suburban on Chicago’s West Side Monday morning. His body was on the floor in front of the SUV’s middle row of seats, covered up with heavy plastic and other items to conceal the body, a police source told NBC Chicago. The boy appeared to have been shot in the back of the head, the source said. An autopsy has been scheduled for today.

El DeBarge, the former lead singer of his family group DeBarge, is back in jail without bail due to two outstanding warrants at the time of his arrest earlier this month for possession of a controlled substance. According to TMZ.com, the singer, born Patrick Eldra DeBarge, was arrested last year on charges including vandalism, drugs and domestic violence. He’s due back in court today, the Web site reported. El DeBarge is the fifth of eight brothers and sixth of ten DeBarge family members. He formed the singing group, DeBarge, in 1978 with his siblings Mark, Randy, James and Bunny.

Hundreds of mourners gathered at Greater Grace Temple in Detroit Monday for the funeral of Four Tops front man Levi Stubbs, the Motown great who died in his sleep Oct. 17 at his Detroit home. He was 72. “He will always be here,” said Smokey Robinson, one of several Motown artists in attendance, according to the Associated Press. “You’re going to turn on the radio and hear him tomorrow. He made his mark on the world. All of the world, you’ll be able to hear Levi Stubbs forever.” Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr., also on hand, told mourners: “He made us walk in his shoes, felt what he felt and loved what he loved. He not only sang the song, he was the song.”

JACKSON JR. WOULD BE HUMBLED

Jesse Jackson Jr.

Jesse Jackson Jr.

Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.) says he’s ready to take the place of Barack Obama in the U.S. Senate should voters send the Democratic senator to the White House on Nov. 4. The choice, however, is up to Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who is in charge of appointing a successor to the state’s U.S. Senate seat if Obama wins the presidential election. “If Senator Obama wins — and I’m optimistic that he will — I indeed would be honored and humbled to succeed him in the U.S. Senate. But, in the end, the decision rests with Gov. Blagojevich, and I’m confident that he’ll make an appointment in the best interest of the state as well as the nation,” Jackson said in a statement. Jackson Jr. is currently the co-chairman of Obama’s presidential campaign. He also came to Obama’s defense when his father, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, famously suggested doing symbolic bodily harm to him.

BOY’S BODY FOUND

Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer Hudson

The body of a young boy was discovered by police following a search for Jennifer Hudson’s 7-year-old nephew, who has been missing since Hudson’s mother and brother were found shot to death in their home on Friday. Police did not immediately release the boy’s identity but local media reports said a vehicle in which the body was found belonged to Hudson’s slain brother, Jason, 29, reports the Associated Press. Police had issued an alert on Friday saying the boy may have been abducted in that vehicle. The boy, Julian King, has been missing since Hudson’s mother, Darnell Donerson, 57, and Jason Hudson were found slain in Donerson’s South Side Chicago home. Police believe the killings appeared to be part of a domestic disturbance.
Police have taken 27-year-old William Balfour into custody as a suspect in the double homicide investigation. Balfour had a relationship with Hudson’s sister Julia but is not the father of Julian King.

TERRANCE HOWARD SUED

Terrance Howard

Terrance Howard

When it rains, it pours for Terrence Howard. One week after learning through the trades that his “Iron Man 2″ role was given to Don Cheadle, the Oscar-nominated actor has been sued for alleged assault. Composer Andrew “Tex” Allen claims he was beaten up by Howard last winter while working together in Broadway’s Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, reports the New York Post.
The jazz pianist and brother of “Tin Roof” director, Debbie Allen, seeks $5 million in damages, according to the lawsuit. He claims Howard stepped to him on Jan. 24 at about 2:30 p.m. as he was sitting at the piano inside of Walter Kerr Theatre. He said Howard punched him repeatedly in the face and head. The lawsuit does not state the reason for the alleged confrontation.

ALASKAN NEWSPAPER ENDORSES OBAMA

Barack Obama

Barack Obama

The hometown newspaper of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin says thanks, but no thanks by announcing its endorsement of her rival, Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, for president. “Gov. Palin’s nomination clearly alters the landscape for Alaskans as we survey this race for the presidency — but it does not overwhelm all other judgment,” the paper stated Saturday. “The election, after all is said and done, is not about Sarah Palin, and our sober view is that her running mate, Sen. John McCain, is the wrong choice for president at this critical time for our nation.” “Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee, brings far more promise to the office,” the paper continues. “In a time of grave economic crisis, he displays thoughtful analysis, enlists wise counsel and operates with a cool, steady hand. The same cannot be said of Sen. McCain.”

VOTING AND PERSON’S WITH DISABILITIES

by Jean Fountain

Historically, voter participation has been lower among people with disabilities than in the general population. More than 30 million Americans with disabilities are of voting age. Yet, a National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation study shows that people with disabilities are 20 percentage points less likely than non-disabled people to vote. A major contributing factor is inaccessibility. According to the Federal Election Commission, more than 20,000 polling places across the nation fail to meet the minimal requirements of accessibility. Citizens with disabilities have a constitutionally protected right to vote, just like the rest of us. Additionally, these Federal laws protect the rights of people with disabilities:
Voting Rights Act of 1965. In addition to providing protections for minority rights, this law allows those with various disabilities to receive assistance “by a person of the voter’s choice,” as long as that person is not the disabled voter’s boss or union agent. Voting Accessibility for Elderly and Handicapped Act of 1984. This law mandates handicapped and elderly access to polling places and provides for the creation of permanent disabled registration sites.
Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. This law prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities and requires accommodations be made for disabled persons at places of employment
and public service. National VoterRegistration Act of 1993. This law requires states with disabled service agencies to act as disabled voter registration agencies as well.
Compliance with these laws is not optional, it is required. If you have trouble exercising your right to vote, call 866-OUR-VOTE. Legal action is also an option.

Police were called to Thomas’s house in Harrison, New York, just after midnight for a report of a possible overdose of a 46- year-old male, WABC-TV reported, citing police sources. The former NBA basketball player and coach is 47, the network said. The incident is being treated as an overdose and not a suicide attempt, WABC-TV said, citing police. Officials with the Knicks would tell the network only that Thomas is fine.

STUDENT VOTING HELP

by Jean Fountain

Students on campuses across the country have created unprecendented excitement and enegy in this year’s presidential election. While a record number of students are expected to vote November 4, confusion about residency and absentee voting requirements may discourage or deter many from actually voting.

In most states, students who leave home to attend college have a choice as to where they will vote. However, the laws governing voting eligibility can be tricky, confusing, or, in some cases, restrictive. Additionally, students may be unfairly targeted by election officials or partisan challengers at the polls.

The Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law recently released a student voting guide to address students’ concerns. The guide explains the basic residency, registration, identification, and absentee voting requirements for student voters in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The guide also addresses the most frequently asked questions by student voters regarding financial aid, car insurance, driver’s licenses, car registration, tuition, dependent status, taxes, and health insurance.

You may find the guide at www.brennancenter.org/studentvoting.

If you have additional questions or if you have problems at the polls on Election Day, call 866-OUR-VOTE.

PRINCE ADD “AUTHOR” TO LIST OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Prince

Prince

Prince recently sat down with The Associated Press to discuss his new coffee-table book “21 Nights,” as well as the Internet’s influence on pirated music and turning the big 5-0 in June of this year. “How old are we really?” the music superstar asked. “It’s about ascension. It’s not the other way. There’s nothing down about it. Everything is better.” As an example, he brings up his groundbreaking 21-night stand at London’s O2 Arena last year. “I couldn’t have sold out 21 nights in London in the peak of my career; it would have been an impossibility,” he says. “I look forward to these years where everything is just open sky. I wish this for every artist: freedom.” The 21 London concerts inspired his new coffee table book “21 Nights,” from publisher Simon & Schuster. The glossy not only steals glimpses of his onstage performances, but also behind-the-scenes moments of the star and his band during the unprecedented concert stint. “No one had ever sold out 21 nights in a row,” said photographer Randee St. Nicholas. “So I thought, ‘We should do a book surrounding this point in his life, because this is a great point in his life.’” “This was a landmark event,” adds Prince. “No one believed that it would do what it did. … Everyone tried to talk me out of it.” There’s a reason why the CD that comes with the book contains only Prince’s classic hits and songs from one of his signature jam sessions – and not any new material.

SPIKE LEE MOVES ON

Spike Lee, Director

Spike Lee, Director

Spike Lee has ended his 15-year relationship with the William Morris Agency in the wake of disappointing box office receipts for his latest film “Miracle at St. Anna.” According to the trades, the filmmaker has signed with Endeavor for representation. The move comes three weeks after his WWII film opened to just $3.5 million, and has grossed just $7.5 million to date.
Before “Anna,” Lee directed the largest-grossing film of his career, the heist thriller “Inside Man,” which drew $176 million worldwide in 2006. A sequel is one of several upcoming projects set up by William Morris.

Toni Braxton

Toni Braxton says she considers her “Dancing with the Stars” run a complete success because she overcame her heart condition to master the demanding ballroom routines each week.
“My goal was reached,” Braxton, who has coronary microvascular angina, told The Associated Press after being voted off Tuesday night. “I wanted to do better. I wanted to breathe better. And I was definitely breathing better. I’ve come a long way from Week One to Week Now.”
Braxton and her professional partner, Alec Mazo, received a score of 22 out of 30 from the show’s judges during Monday’s performance after a respectable West Coast swing routine. The “Unbreak My Heart” crooner was booted after that score was combined with viewer votes.

WAS JANET REALLY ILL?

Janet

Janet

Janet Jackson may have announced that a bout of vertigo caused her to cancel a handful of tour dates this month, but some people just aren’t buying it. Fox411 columnist Roger Friedman suggests that “Jackson watchers” believe the singer may have faked the illness as a way to cancel shows that hadn’t sold a respectable amount of tickets.
Friedman wrote:
Jackson watchers speculated that she’d picked up an old trick from brother Michael. When ticket sales are off, or you just feel blue, claim illness. Michael has made more unnecessary hospital visits than any other celebrity besides his own mentor, Liz Taylor. Still, it seemed so unlike Janet. She’s always had a strong work ethic, and always seemed above her family’s shenanigans. But the truth is, tickets were not moving. Yesterday afternoon you could have bought 8 floor seats for the show at Houston’s Toyota Center

DIDDY TAKES OVER

Diddy

Diddy

Diddy’s fashion line, Sean John Clothing Inc., is the new owner of urban lifestyle brand Enyce, reports the Wall Street Journal. The rap mogul purchased the line from Liz Claiborne Inc. as the 32-year-old company shifts its focus to bigger businesses amid a decline in consumer spending.
A person familiar with the deal said that Enyce — which Claiborne bought for $114 million in 2003 — was valued at about $20 million. Enyce’s sales were as high as $100 million at their peak, but have since dwindled to about half that amount as retailers have consolidated.
Diddy said he plans to retool the brand, expand its distribution and use his entertainment industry contacts to promote it. “In music, people know me as the ‘King of the Remix,’” Diddy said. “Now I am remixing this brand and making it a hit.” The artist said he will ensure Enyce’s brand identity is distinct from the core Sean John brand, which sells higher-priced apparel. “We are going to take the next month to get in there and come up with a new strategy, and make sure there aren’t any conflicts,” he said.

“TOOTS” HAS BROKEN HIP

Barack Obama’s 85-year-old grandmother Madelyn Payne Dunham broke her hip recently and is “gravely ill,” her brother told the Associated Press Tuesday. Dunham, who goes by the nickname Toot, “has not been well for a long time. Then she fell and broke her hip fairly recently,” Charles Payne said in a telephone interview from his home in Chicago. “She’s unhappy with the condition that she’s in, I can tell you that.” Obama said he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday and Friday to visit his grandmother, and Payne, Obama’s great-uncle, is planning to fly there for her 86th birthday, which is Sunday.

NOTE: By the way, the Wall Street Journal reports today that Senator Barack Obama has opened a double-digit nation wide lead over his Republican chanllenger, Senator John McCain.

AGE WAS A FACTOR, AT FIRST

Age ain’t nothing but a number to Mariah Carey. She was 20 years younger than her first husband, music mogul Tommy Mottola, and is a decade older than her current spouse Nick Cannon. Carey, 38, married the entertainer in April following a six-week whirlwind romance. But the decision was not entirely without consideration of the age difference. When asked if she ever had second thoughts about Cannon being 10 years younger, she told WENN: “You know what, I did. But he doesn’t act like it (younger) — he’s really very intelligent. He’s a very business-minded person, but he’s also a lot of fun so you don’t really think about those things. It is what it is. “I’ve been with someone older and that could be a disaster or maybe you have to throw that side away and don’t think about it — think about who’s right for you.”
Carey and Mottola split in 1998 after five years of marriage.

Also, three top executives have left the organization. But the founder of Black Entertainment Television said he has no intention of unloading the team, and will spend whatever it takes to get the Bobcats to the playoffs for the first time.

OBAMA’S APPEAL RISES

Things continue to look rosy for Democratic presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama and his VP running mate, Senator Joseph Biden, according to the results of a recent New York Times/CBS poll. The key highpoint for Obama: His favorability “is the highest for a presidential candidate running for a first term in the last 28 years.”
On the other hand, Sarah Palin’s negative rating is the highest for a vice-presidential candidate, even exceeding the infamous former VP, Dan Quayle, who was also viewed negatively in 1988. Read more of the NY Times’ report:
As voters have gotten to know Senator Barack Obama, they have warmed up to him, with more than half, 53 percent, now saying they have a favorable impression of him and 33 percent saying they have an unfavorable view. But as voters have gotten to know Senator John McCain, they have not warmed, with only 36 percent of voters saying they view him favorably while 45 percent view him unfavorably. Even voters who are planning to vote for Mr. McCain say their enthusiasm has waned. In New York Times and CBS News polls conducted with the same respondents before the first presidential debate and again after the last debate, McCain made no progress in appealing to voters on a personal level, and he and his running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin, had alienated some voters. Personal appeal is an intangible element in voters’ decisions. Each voter has a personal reason for connecting with a candidate or not. But the percentage of those who hold a favorable opinion of Mr. Obama is up 10 points since last month. Opinion of Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., Mr. Obama’s running mate, is also up, to 50 percent last weekend from 36 percent in September.

In contrast, favorable opinion of Mr. McCain remained stable, and unfavorable opinion rose to 45 percent now from 35 percent in September. Mrs. Palin’s negatives are up, to 41 percent now from 29 percent in September.

Mr. Obama’s favorability is the highest for a presidential candidate running for a first term in the last 28 years of Times/CBS polls. Mrs. Palin’s negative rating is the highest for a vice-presidential candidate as measured by The Times and CBS News. Even Dan Quayle, with whom Mrs. Palin is often compared because of her age and inexperience on the national scene, was not viewed as negatively in the 1988 campaign.

OBAMA TO LOOK AFTER GRANDMOTHER

Obama With Grandparents

Obama With Grandparents

Sen. Barack Obama has made the very personal decision to leave the campaign trail for two days to visit his ailing 85-year-old grandmother in Hawaii. But with 14 days left in the campaign, observers say, even the personal becomes political.
Although a candidate has never before stopped campaigning this close to Election Day, Obama’s running mate and surrogates will remain on the trail, and more important, his ads will continue to run. Obama decided Monday night to cancel campaign stops on Thursday and Friday and fly to Hawaii to see his grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, the woman he affectionately calls “Toot,” short for the Hawaiian word “tutu” for grandparent. Dunham, who pretty much raised Obama, has been ailing lately and her brother, Charles Payne, told The Associated Press, she recently fell and broke her hip.

Obama will skip scheduled rallies in Wisconsin and Iowa. His weekend rallies have been monster events. Last weekend Obama drew 75,000 at a Kansas City rally and 100,000 at St. Louis rally later on the same day. Obama returns to the campaign trail Saturday.

POWELL WILL BE ADVISOR

Colin Powell

Colin Powell

In an interview with NBC’s “Today,” Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama said former Secretary of State Colin Powell will have a role as a top presidential adviser in his administration.
“Whether he wants to take a formal role, whether that’s a good fit for him, is something we’d have to discuss,” Obama said Monday, a day after Powell, a four-star general and President Bush’s former secretary of state, endorsed him.
Powell, a Republican, did not inform Obama of his endorsement before announcing it on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Obama told “Today.” Powell called Obama a “transformational figure” in the nation’s history and expressed disappointment in some of McCain’s campaign tactics. But, Powell said, he didn’t plan to hit the campaign trail with Obama before the Nov. 4 election.
“I won’t lie to you.

DEE DEE WARWICK DIES

Dee Dee Warwick

Dee Dee Warwick

Soul singer Dee Dee Warwick, the older sister of R&B veteran Dionne Warwick, died Saturday at a nursing home in South Orange, NJ, reports the Associated Press. She was 63.
Family spokesman Kevin Sasaki said she had been in failing health in recent months, and her sister was by her side when she died. Warwick was best known for her string of hits in the 1960s and 70s, including “Foolish Fool,” “She Didn’t Know (She Kept on Talking)” and a version of “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me” that was later covered by Diana Ross and The Supremes.
Warwick was twice nominated for a Grammy Award and sang backup for Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett and others before launching a solo career. She was the niece of gospel singer Cissy Houston and a cousin of Whitney Houston.

The Newark-born talent was a teen when she began singing with her older sister in the late 1950s. The two performed as The Gospelaires and also collaborated and sang with the Drinkard Singers, a long-running gospel group that also featured some of the Warwicks’ aunts and uncles and was managed by their mother.

Most recently, Warwick provided background vocals for her sister’s one-woman autobiographical show, “My Music & Me,” which played to sold-out crowds in Europe this year. She also performed on the title song from Dionne Warwick’s gospel album, “Why We Sing,” released January 2008.

BRANDY STILL UPSET OVER CAR CRASH

Brandy

Brandy

Brandy says she continues to deal with the pain of knowing that her role in a freeway car accident took the life of another human being in December 2006. “It was just a tough situation to go through,” she told Los Angeles DJ Ryan Seacrest Monday. “I can’t really talk about it in any great detail because of legal matters but it was just something that I don’t like to think about often.” The singer escaped vehicular manslaughter charges over the collision, which killed Awatef Aboudihaj, but almost two years on, Brady admits she’s still haunted by the incident. “You have to understand that you don’t intend for things like that to happen; it’s an accident… and that’s how you get through things like that.

FORMER SOUL TRAIN HOST ARRESTED

Don Cornelius

Don Cornelius

Don Cornelius, the former host of the television show “Soul Train,” was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence, police said Saturday. Police were called to his Hollywood Hills home late Friday after someone reported a domestic dispute, Officer Sam Park said. The 72-year-old producer was taken to jail, where he was booked for investigation of felony domestic violence, Park said. He was released on $50,000 bail and ordered to appear in court next month.
Park said he did not know whom Cornelius was suspected of assaulting. A call to Cornelius’ production office was not immediately returned. Cornelius started “Soul Train” in 1970 to showcase black music and culture, introducing television audiences to such legendary artists as Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and Barry White. The series spawned a franchise that includes the Soul Train Music Awards, the Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards and the Soul Train Christmas Starfest. Cornelius stepped down as “Soul Train” host in 1993.

COLIN POWELL ENDORSES OBAMA

Colin Powell (Ret)

Colin Powell (Ret)

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell announced Sunday that he will be voting for Sen. Barack Obama, citing the Democrat’s “ability to inspire” and the “inclusive nature of his campaign.” “I think he is a transformational figure, he is a new generation coming onto the world stage, onto the American stage, and for that reason I’ll be voting for Sen. Barack Obama,” Powell said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” Powell said he was concerned about what he characterized as a recent negative turn of Republican candidate Sen. John McCain’s campaign, such as the campaign’s attempts to tie Obama to former 1960s radical Bill Ayers. “I think that’s inappropriate. I understand what politics is about — I know how you can go after one another, and that’s good. But I think this goes too far, and I think it has made the McCain campaign look a little narrow. It’s not what the American people are looking for,” he said. Powell, a retired U.S. general and a Republican, was once seen as a possible presidential candidate himself. Powell said he has some concerns about the direction of the Republican Party, adding that it has “moved more to the right than I would like to see it.” Read a transcript of Powell’s remarks. In regard to the financial crisis, which Powell called the candidates’ “final exam,” Powell said McCain appeared unsteady in dealing with it, while Obama had excelled in handling the situation.
“Obama displayed a steadiness, an intellectual curiosity, a depth of knowledge,” Powell said. “He has met the standard of being a successful president, being an exceptional president,” he said. During the campaign, Powell has met with both candidates and said he has a lot of respect for McCain. He said Sunday that he thinks both candidates are qualified to be president. “It isn’t easy for me to disappoint Sen. McCain in the way that I have this morning, and I regret that,” Powell said. Speaking on Fox News Sunday, McCain said he respects and admires Powell, and the announcement “doesn’t come as a surprise.” “I’m also very pleased to have the endorsement of four former secretaries of state — Secretaries [Henry] Kissinger, [James] Baker, [Lawrence] Eagleburger, and [Alexander] Haig — and I’m proud to have the endorsement of well over 200 retired Army generals and admirals,” McCain said. Obama called Powell on Sunday and thanked him for his endorsement, communications director Robert Gibbs said. In their 10-minute conversation, Obama said he looked forward to taking advantage of Powell’s advice in the next two weeks and hopefully over the next four years, Gibbs said.
Powell served as Secretary of State under President Bush from 2001 to 2005.
The possibility of a Powell endorsement has been rumored for several months.
On August 13, Powell’s office denied a report on Fox News by commentator Bill Kristol that Powell had decided to publicly back Obama at the Democratic National Convention.
Powell himself brushed off queries on any potential presidential nod but told ABC News in August that he would not be going to Denver, Colorado, for the convention.
Back in February, Powell told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that he was weighing an endorsement of a Democratic or independent candidate. Powell has offered praise for Obama, calling him an “exciting person on the political stage.” “He has energized a lot of people in America,” said Powell. “He has energized a lot of people around the world. And so I think he is worth listening to and seeing what he stands for.” The former general, who has largely steered clear of politics since leaving the Bush administration, noted that the next president will need to work to restore America’s standing in the world. Powell gave the keynote address at the Republican National Convention in support of George W. Bush in 2000. Powell said Sunday that he has no plans to campaign for Obama.

JANET ROCKS WITCHA

Janet jackson

Janet jackson

The Janet Jackson ‘Rock Witchu’ tour came through the ATL’s (her new hometown) Phillips Arena Sunday night with Jackson in full regalia and with plenty of energy to spare.

She had been dogged by numerous show cancellations, causing much speculation, reportedly due to a temporary medical condition that caused her to experience vertigo. she silenced the ‘crazy talk’ by playing a full 2+ hour set, breezing through her arsenal of hits and signature dance moves like the seasoned pro she is.

There was no show opener, which some had thought would be LL Cool J, but a DJ set the mood right before Janet took the stage. The modestly full arena gave her a very warm welcome home, to which she responded, “It’s so good to be home…I LOVE Atlanta!” She was nearly brought to tears.

Janet’s three most recent albums have been sales disappointments, but based on her repertoire of hits, it’s easy to forget that fact. She took full advantage of all she had at her disposal by lip synching (you did realize that, right…?) her way through everything from ‘Rhythm Nation,’ ‘That’s The Way Love Goes,’ ‘Black Cat,’ ‘Escapade,’ ‘When I Think of You,’ ‘Funny How Time Flies,’ ‘So Much Betta,’ and the list goes on, but she stopped to perform ‘Never Letchu Go’ (Discipline album) live. She even threw in rare tracks “You’ll Never Find (A Love Like Mine)” and “Young Love” from very early in her career.

The bulk of the show was pretty much standard Janet and her troupe of dancers (with heart stopping pyrotechnic additions here and there), but the temperature rose pretty quickly in Phillips when she naughtily performed ‘Discipline’ to a dominatrix style set, using an unsuspecting — and ulitmately very happy — audience member as a prop. Black leather, whips, suspension apparatus…you get the picture. If THAT’s what Jermaine gets at home, I’m sure there will be much pushback from him on those splitsville rumors; stay tuned…

Janet delivered a performance that certainly met fan’s expectations and she showed no signs of trouble in paradise.

Dawn Richard of Danity Kane continues to deny rumors that she is on the verge of leaving the group to become a solo act for label head Sean “Diddy” Combs. During Tuesday’s live finale of “Making the Band 4,” Diddy fired Aubrey O’Day and D. Woods from the group, leaving speculation over the fate of remaining members Richard, Shannon Bex and Aundrea Fimbres.
She told Essence magazine: “It’s so interesting how the media chooses to interpret or report things. I have never said that I was pursuing a solo deal. I told someone that I have waited so long for my dream, and singing is my dream and has been for so long. I have done nothing on the side as far as solo projects. I’m not sidestepping.”
