MORNING SHOW UPDATE

MAY 29, 2009

SOLID GOLD SOUL

Hello and Welcome to the Morning Show Update for May 29, 2009

Here’s whats going on today and I invite to join me on Facebook as well!

IS TERRANCE HOWARD GETTING MARRIED

Terrance Howard

Terrance Howard

Earlier it was reported that actor Terrence Howard and actress Zulay Henao had become engaged on the Prauge set of Howard’s movie “Red Tails.” (See that report from WENN below.)

Now, however, a representative for the actor is denying the report.

“Not true,” blog site Just Jared quotes the representative as insisting. “Terrence is not engaged to Zulay.”

In the meantime, Zulay’s representative, brands report of both stars’ engagement as “very fake.”

WENN further claimed that Howard confirmed his engagement to Henao while he was partying at a bar in Prague on Friday night, May 22. He was claimed saying, “I just got engaged.”

Here’s what was reported previously:

*On location in Prague shooting the WWII film “Red Tails,” Terrence Howard took time out to ask for his girlfriend’s hand in marriage.

According to WENN, the actor proposed to Columbian actress Zulay (pronounced: Zu-ly) Henao after she jetted over to the Czech Republic for a visit.

Although he has never confirmed his relationship with Henao, the pair has been spotted together at red carpet events and they were snapped frolicking in the sea together during a December 2007 vacation.

Howard, 40, started dating Henao after splitting with ex-wife Lori McCommas for the second time in 2005. Howard and McCommas ended their 14-year marriage in 2003, but he wooed her back and they remarried, only to split for good soon after.

Last year, the actor revealed how he had bought McCommas her childhood home and stalked her in a bid to win her back. But, after their second split, he moved on and found love with Henao, who helped him recover from the death of his beloved mother Anita to cancer last September.

The couple can be seen together in 2009 movie “Fighting.”

SONIA SOTMAYOR THE MOVIE

Judge Sotomayor

Judge Sotomayor

The Associated Press is already trying to figure out who would play would be Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor in a movie that has yet to be announced – at least not as of press time.

Their short list includes the obvious – Jennifer Lopez and Rosie Perez, both of whom share Sotomayor’s Puerto Rican heritage. But they also threw in African American male actor Tyler Perry, best known for his take-no-prisoners grandma character Madea.

The following is AP’s entire hypothetical list, along with rationales:

• Jennifer Lopez: Jenny From the Block comes from the same part of New York as Sotomayor, and she’s already played a real-life, high-profile figure in “Selena,” the film the made her a star. This take on Sotomayor’s life would likely feature La Lopez in plenty of wardrobe changes, aside from the obligatory black robe, and gratuitous cutaways to her flawless hair and makeup.

• Rosie Perez: Close your eyes and imagine how she would say the following sentence in her distinctively heavy Brooklyn accent: “Thank you, Mr. President, for the most humbling honor of my life.” The intentions would be honorable, but unintentional hilarity factor could be high.

• Penny Marshall: A Bronx native and lifelong Yankees fan like Sotomayor, she’s already made a baseball movie with the 1992 hit “A League of Their Own.” Here, Marshall could streamline the process by directing herself.

BEYONCE ACCOSTED BY LONDON FAN

Beyonce

Beyonce

Bodyguards at Beyonce’s London concert on Monday night dealt swiftly with a man who managed to squeeze past security and come face to face with the singer while she was backstage.

Bey is currently in the U.K. playing several dates as part of her I Am … world tour. While preparing to perform at London’s O2 Arena Monday night, a fan somehow got backstage and accosted her as she was walking between her dressing room and the stage.

A source tells The London Paper, “A man barged through the backstage door just as Beyonce was walking past. He cried out her name with his arms outstretched before security bundled him back out again.”

But the paper reports it was not Beyonce who was the actual target: “He wanted to see (Beyonce’s husband) Jay-Z to give him a demo tape.”

TYSON’S DAUGHTER DIES

Mike Tyson

Mike Tyson

The 4-year-old daughter of former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson was pronounced dead just before noon on Tuesday due to injuries from an accident at her family’s central Phoenix home.
According to Phoenix police spokesman Andy Hill, Exodus Tyson was playing on a treadmill Monday when her head apparently slipped inside a cord hanging under the console.

Exodus’ 7-year-old brother found his sister tangled up in the cable and called for his mother, who quickly removed the cord from her neck, called 911, then began administering CPR.

Police officers, who arrived at the home minutes later, found the little girl unconscious and continued performing CPR. She was rushed to St. Joseph Hospital and Medical Center.

Tyson, 42, was in Las Vegas at the time of the accident and flew to Phoenix on Monday. As she remained in critical condition Tuesday morning, he released a statement thanking folks for their prayers.

“There are no words to describe the tragic loss of our beloved Exodus,” the family said in a statement. “We ask you now to please respect our need at this very difficult time for privacy to grieve and try to help each other heal.”

NATALIE COLE RELEASED FROM HOSPITAL

Natalie Cole

Natalie Cole

Natalie Cole was discharged from the hospital on Sunday following her kidney transplant surgery that took place five days earlier.
The Grammy winner, 59, was scheduled to attend a private family memorial service yesterday for her sister Carol “Cookie” Cole, who passed away following a battle with lung cancer the same day Natalie received her life-saving organ transplant.

“Natalie is continuing to do well under the circumstances,” says her rep, according to People.com.

Cole, who had been receiving dialysis three times a week to treat her hepatitis C (now in remission), was holding vigil at her ailing sister’s bedside when she got the call that a donor organ was available.

The artist is expected to spend the next three to four months recuperating and will reschedule her summer tour dates in support of her album “Still Unforgettable.”

“I love the richness and thickness of Whoop Ash,” says actress Tisha Campbell-Martin. “We live in a windy climate and I gots’ta whoop some ash on my son’s knees, ankles, and elbows every morning.”

“We love it,” adds fellow actress Holly Robinson-Peete. “Smells so good and works. I swear I have the ashiest kids ever. Great product.”

No word on casting yet, but the series that has followed wealthy housewives in Orange County, Calif., New York City, Atlanta and currently New Jersey will now trot around after elite women in Washington D.C.

“We’re tapping personalities who are among Washington, D.C.’s influential players, cultural connoisseurs, fashion sophisticates and philanthropic leaders—the people who rub elbows with the most prominent people in the country and easily move in the city’s diverse political and social circles,” Frances Berwick, the cable net’s executive VP, announced Tuesday morning.

AMAZING AMERICAN IDOL END

Kris Wins!

Kris Wins!

Kris Allen beamed with disbelief, shook his head as if to reject that this was really happening and doubled over in shock. The fact that he’d just beaten rollicking vocal powerhouse Adam Lambert for the “American Idol” title wasn’t going to sink in quickly for the unassuming underdog from Arkansas. The only downside to this stunning victory: He was going to have to sing “No Boundaries” one more time.

“I’m sorry, I don’t even know what to feel right now. This is crazy,” said the 23-year-old from Conway, Ark., as he leaned on host Ryan Seacrest to keep from staggering.

Allen’s smooth vocals and boy-next-door image gave him the edge after nearly 100 million viewer votes were cast, turning the theatrical Lambert into the most unlikely of also-rans. When the season started, Allen seemed unsure he had a right to take center stage, let alone stand there and snatch victory from such a formidable rival.

During his “Idol” audition last summer, Allen, hands in his pockets and a newsboy cap pulled down around his eyes, was asked by the judges if he was the best singer around.

“You know, there’s probably people who are better than me,” was Allen’s response, offered in the quiet, low-key spirit he retained despite his growing profile.

Conversely, Lambert’s commanding vocal range and stage presence — and the judges’ lavish adoration — at times turned “Idol” into “The Adam Lambert Show,” with the other contestants mere guests. But it turned out that “Idol” viewers could embrace a gifted performer like Lambert, one who sported black nail polish and bold self-assurance, only to a point.

Cowell tipped his hat to both contestants Wednesday night, who shared a moment of musical camaraderie when they joined with Queen on the rock anthem “We Are the Champions.”

“To both of you, and I don’t normally mean this, I thought you were both brilliant … the future’s all yours,” the judge said.

MAN CONVICTED IN HUMAN BODY PARTS SCAM

Ernest Nelson

Ernest Nelson

A man was convicted Thursday of carving up cadavers donated to UCLA’s medical school and selling the parts to unsuspecting medical research companies in a $1.5 million scheme.
Jurors found Ernest Nelson, 51, guilty of eight counts, including grand theft and tax evasion. Prosecutors said Nelson could face a maximum of 12 years in prison and they want him to repay $1.5 million to UCLA.

Nelson “was willing to go into a willed body program and cut up body parts for his own personal financial gain,” prosecutor Marisa Zarate said after the verdict.

Defense attorney Sean McDonald said he was disappointed by the verdict and left court without further comment.

Prosecutors said Nelson and Henry Reid, the former director of UCLA’s Willed Body Program, devised the scam in 1999.

Nelson, who ran a business transporting body parts to hospitals and medical research firms, has said he thought the sales were authorized by the university.

Prosecutors said he bought the donated torsos, cut them up and kept them frozen in a rented warehouse until they were sold to companies that didn’t know they had been improperly obtained.

Nelson, of Rancho Cucamonga, used cashier’s checks to pay Reid a total of $43,000 in 1999, Zarate said. Other payments were made in cash and weren’t documented, she said.

The plan unraveled after a state health investigator became concerned about a sale in 2003 and contacted UCLA.

Reid has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit grand theft and was sentenced to more than four years in prison.

PRESIDENT DEFENDS PLANS TO CLOSE GITMO

President Defends Gitmo Stand

President Defends Gitmo Stand

President Obama on Thursday defended his decision to shutter the military detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, saying the prison has made the United States less safe and set back the country’s “moral authority.”

President Obama wants to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility, but Congress wants a detailed plan.

1 of 2 “The record is clear: Rather than keep us safer, the prison at Guantanamo has weakened American national security,” Obama said during an address on national security at the National Archives in Washington.

“It is a rallying cry for our enemies. It sets back the willingness of our allies to work with us in fighting an enemy that operates in scores of countries. By any measure, the costs of keeping it open far exceed the complications involved in closing it.”

He said that the facility resulted in the creation of more terrorists than it detained, and he said that over the last seven years, the system of military commissions at Guantanamo succeeded in convicting “a grand total of three suspected terrorists.”

KING MOVIE IN LIMBO AS SIBLINGS FUSS

King Children

King Children

DreamWorks Studios will back out of plans to produce a movie about the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. unless King’s three surviving children settle their differences over the deal, the studio said Wednesday.

From left, Dexter, Bernice, Martin and Yolanda King. The three surviving siblings have had several public rifts.

A longtime friend of the three Kings predicted peace may be at hand for the squabbling siblings and that all of them want Steven Spielberg’s studio to portray their father’s life on the big screen.

The latest public rift between Dexter King, the chief executive of the King estate, and his brother and sister — Martin Luther King III and Bernice King — erupted Tuesday after it was made public that Dexter King, 48, had finalized the deal with DreamWorks.

Martin King, 51, and Bernice King, 46, learned that a deal had been struck when Dexter sent them an e-mail Tuesday morning, just as the news media was being told by the studio, a source close to the family told CNN.

Yolanda King, the eldest of the Kings’ four children, died two years ago at age 51.

Martin King and Bernice King, who live in Atlanta, Georgia, had known that Dexter King, who lives in California, was negotiating with Spielberg on a possible movie deal, the source said.

Bernice King and Martin King said they knew nothing about the DreamWorks project. They said they embraced the idea of a film about their father but told CNN’s “Larry King Live” they were concerned about the deal.

NATALIE COLE HAS NEW KIDNEY, SUSPENDS TOUR

Natalie Cole

Natalie Cole

Natalie Cole is the recipient of a brand new kidney, according to an announcement Wednesday from her reps.

The 59-year-old singer underwent successful kidney transplant surgery, her camp stated without any further details at press time.

Cole will reportedly postpone her summer tour as she recovers.

The daughter of the late Nat King Cole has been receiving dialysis three times a week since September. She still continued her concert tour in support of her latest album, “Still Unforgettable.”

The Grammy-winner announced she was diagnosed with hepatitis C in February 2008. Her kidneys failed after treatment and she had since been seeking a donor.

JACKSON CONCERT CANCELLATIONS

Michael

Michael

Reps for Michael Jackson’s upcoming string of London concerts have announced that several will be postponed, prompting more speculation that the singer’s health is not as good as his camp is claiming.

The opening night at the 02 Arena had been set for July 8 but will be pushed back to July 13, promoters stated. In addition, shows scheduled for July 10, July 12 and July 14 will instead be held in March 2010.

Jackson’s rep, Dr. Tohme Tohme, denied earlier reports that the King of Pop is suffering from skin cancer. The singer’s collaborator, Kenny Ortega, said the postponements were made not for health reasons, but to ensure the delivery of a flawless production.

“We apologize to all disappointed Michael Jackson fans and remain extremely dedicated and focused on creating an exceptional live music experience,” said Ortega, according to the Associated Press.

Promoters said anyone who chooses not to attend the rescheduled shows will be entitled to a full refund.

OBAMA FACES HECKLERS AT NOTRE DAME

The President at Notre Dame

The President at Notre Dame

Confronting the nation’s deep schism over abortion, President Obama on Sunday called for greater understanding on all sides and “open hearts, open minds, fair-minded words” on the issue as he spoke to graduates at one of America’s premier Catholic universities.

Obama emphasized the importance of common ground as opponents of abortion rights protested his appearance and the honorary degree he received from the University of Notre Dame.

“I do not suggest that the debate surrounding abortion can or should go away,” he said. “At some level, the views of the two camps are irreconcilable. Each side will continue to make its case to the public with passion and conviction. But surely we can do so without reducing those with differing views to caricature.”

Speaking before about 12,000 people inside the university’s basketball arena, Obama borrowed a page from former President Clinton, who supported abortion rights but spoke often of the need to reduce unwanted pregnancies and encourage adoptions — language that both sides can generally agree with.

The Pope’s Stand in Obama’s Notre Dame Controversy

*At the rate things are going, Pope Benedict XVI may find his next trip to the U.S. dogged by airplanes overhead trailing banners with images of aborted fetuses. O.K., that’s a bit of hyperbole.

But while several prominent conservative Catholics in this country are apoplectic over the University of Notre Dame’s invitation of the pro-choice Barack Obama to give the school’s commencement address on May 17, the Vatican has stayed completely silent on the matter.

The two very different reactions to the question of whether a Catholic institution should honor anyone who disagrees with the Church’s teaching on abortion are just the latest examples of the strikingly divergent responses American Catholic leaders and the Vatican have had to the Obama Administration.

LIL KIM TO WRITE ABOUT JAIL TIME

Lil Kim

Lil Kim

Lil Kim will reflect upon her 10-month federal prison stint in a new tell-all book to be titled “The Price of Loyalty.”

According to the Post Chronicle, the rapper and recent “Dancing With the Stars” standout will write about her experience behind bars at the Federal Detention Center in Philadelphia.

She was accused of lying about her former Junior M.A.F.I.A. group member and co-manager’s involvement in a 2001 shooting in Manhattan, New York, and was found guilty of perjury. The Brooklyn native was sentenced to a prison term of a year and one day in 2005, but was released in Sept. 2006 after serving only 10 months.

The book, according to Kim, is meant to provide inspiration to others, specifically those who are serving time in prison.

“It’s about the things I learned and went through,” she says. “You don’t think about things until it happens to you. The book is going to give people who have been in those situations a bright outlook on life.”

JACKSON SKIN CANCER RUMORS FALSE

Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson’s camp is denying new reports that he is suffering from skin cancer, and insists he is in top condition to begin his scheduled 50-night residency at London’s O2 Arena in July.

The King of Pop’s rep, Dr. Tohme Tohme, told the New York Daily News on Saturday: “He is great. He’s in perfect health … he doesn’t have any diseases whatsoever.”

Tohme was responding to reports earlier Saturday from Britain’s Sun newspaper claiming the entertainer has cancerous spots on his body and pre-cancerous cells on his face. The paper also said Jackson was diagnosed last month and has been told the condition is treatable.

“Not true,” says Tohme. “He is in the best of health.”

The Sun also quoted sources who said Jackson planned to go forward with the London shows despite his alleged skin condition.

“He was at first very concerned, but says he has been assured by the doctors that they can treat this and he will recover,” an insider was quoted as saying. “He said he’s insisted that any treatment must fit around the concerts, and the show will go on.”

Jackson, 50, who already suffers from the pigmentation disorder vitiligo, has been visiting a Beverly Hills dermatologist, the paper said. The Sun said he was diagnosed in April – around the time his car was involved in an accident at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.

LIONEL RITCHIE, AND QUEEN ON IDOL

Lionel Ritchie

American Idol” has announced that Queen Latifah, Black Eyed Peas, Lionel Richie and Carlos Santana are among the performers lined up for Wednesday’s season finale showdown between Kris Allen and Adam Lambert.

The stars will join fellow booked acts Cyndi Lauper and Keith Urban as performers during the close of the show’s eighth season.

Previous “Idol” winners David Cook and Carrie Underwood are also scheduled to take the stage.

Underwood will perform on Tuesday’s episode, which will feature Lambert, a 27-year-old theater actor from San Diego, and Allen, a 23-year-old college student from Conway, Ark., battling for a record contract and the title of “American Idol.”

Meanwhile, Jamie Foxx, who mentored the “Idol” contestants during Rat Pack week, weighs in on the final two contestants during an appearance on today’s episode of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”

The actor-singer said Adam has the potential to “go stratosphere,” but Allen’s a sleeper.

“Watch out for him,” he tells DeGeneres of the guitar-playing singer. “Kris really sort of swooned me. You know, I’m a macho man, but he was singing and I was like, oh my goodness. I was like, ‘Dude, you had me floating for a minute.’ So I told him I would really, really love to do a record with him because he’s sort of understated.”

WANDA SYKES PARENT OF TWINS

Wanda Sykes

Wanda Sykes

Wanda Sykes and her wife, Alex, are the proud new parents of newborn twins, according to People.com.

The couple, who were married on Oct. 25, 2008, welcomed daughter Olivia Lou and son Lucas Claude on April 27, the magazine reported.

The comedian’s wife gave birth to the babies. Olivia weighed in at 6 lbs., 7 oz., and was 19-inches long, while Lucas debuted at 7 lbs., 9 oz., and was 20-inches long.

“All are happy and healthy and at home,” says Sykes’s rep Danica Smith.

MICHAEL TO MAKE BANK

Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson

Billboard magazine has crunched the numbers and found that Michael Jackson could pocket more than $50 million from his much-anticipated 50-night stand at London’s O2 Arena, his first shows in 12 years.
Tickets average about $115 and capacity will be about 15,000 per show, taking the gross for the run to about $90 million. Premium and VIP packages and secondary market sales will boost the gross to more than $100 million. Merchandise sales could bring in another $15 million, Billboard reports.

The deal is set up where Jackson shares in net ticket revenue which, according to Billboard calculations, would make Jackson’s take on ticket sales alone north of $50 million, though producer/promoter AEG Live would not confirm this.

AEG Live has spent $20 million on the production, details of which have not been disclosed. However, CEO Randy Phillips says to expect a multi-media experience that would be “the most cutting edge ever employed on a tour. We’re using technology that’s never been used before in live entertainment.”

“Originally we tried to keep the show down to 90 minutes, but Michael has so many must-do songs in his repertoire that the shows now will be two-plus hours,” Phillips tells Billboard.

Jackson is now working out specific songs, though a top-to-bottom dress rehearsal won’t be ready for a month.

“Michael’s in incredible physical shape, he’s got tremendous stamina, he’s been working out aerobically preparing for this, and he is totally engaged,” Phillips says. “He sounds like Michael Jackson. He is laser-focused on making this the greatest entertainment event that fans have ever seen.”

The King of Pop has been holding concert rehearsals for the past four weeks at a Burbank, Calif. soundstage in preparation for the concert run that begins July 8. He is once again working with choreographer/producer/director Kenny Ortega, who created and designed Jackson’s Dangerous World Tour 1992-1993 and HIStory World Tour 1996-1997.

The pair have been rehearsing four days a week for six hours a day with ten dancers — eight men and two women out of a field of 700 who auditioned in Los Angeles last week.

According to gossip blogger Janet Charlton, Jackson and Ortega “are developing a secret new move that will be as distinctive as his moonwalk. One of the more enticing rumors about the show is that Jackson will do a duet with his oldest son Prince Michael.”

JAY Z AND CIARA TOURING TOGETHER

Jay Z and Ciara

Jay Z and Ciara

Jay-Z and Ciara are in the planning stages of a summer tour that will include stops in Las Vegas, Connecticut and Atlanta, so far.

The news first broke Monday night when Ciara revealed on Twitter: “I will say it because the information has been leaked. Me and Jay-Z will be doing a 10-city tour run together! More details coming soon! [sic]”

A rep for Jay-Z confirmed the tour to Billboard.com, but says it will not be a 10-city jaunt. She wouldn’t say if there were more dates or less.

So far, stops are scheduled for July 3 and 4 at The Pearl at The Palms in Las Vegas, July 10 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut, and July 12 in Atlanta.

Before the Jay-Z trek, Ciara will support Britney Spears on the European leg of the “Circus” tour in June.

SHARPTON HOLDING EDUCATION RALLY IN DC

Al Sharpton

Al Sharpton

Following his meeting last week with President Obama regarding the racial gap in public education, Rev. Al Sharpton will host a mass education rally on Saturday (May 16) in Washington D.C.

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will be present, as will civil rights leaders, activists, educators, young people, William T. Coleman, lead strategist and coauthor of the Brown v. Board of Education brief and Minnijean Brown Trickey, member of the “Little Rock Nine” at Central High.

Billed as “Close the Gap: Equality in Education Day,” the event is a call to action on the 55th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, which overturned segregation in public schools. Our nation’s public education system, however, continues to deny African American, Latino, and Native American students good teachers and schools. This creates an achievement gap that makes education equality the civil rights issue of our time.

The rally will take place at the White House Ellipse beginning at 10 a.m.

ESSENCE TEAMS UP WITH CNN AND HLN

essence_logo(med)

CNN, HLN, CNN.com and Essence Communications, Inc., are joining forces to develop What Matters, a series of weekly news segments focused on issues of importance to the African-American community.
As an extension of the regular news items and features in Essence magazine, as well as the ongoing multicultural programming on CNN, the on-air and online segments will be hosted on CNN by Tony Harris and Don Lemon with contributions from Roland Martin, Fredricka Whitfield and T.J. Holmes. The segments will be hosted on HLN by anchor Richelle Carey.

The recurring segment debuted on CNN on Friday, May 8, in the 12 p.m. hour and will feature topics ranging from 401(k) strategies to elder-care issues to pop culture.

On HLN, the segment will be seen during the 6 p.m. hour on the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday editions of “Prime News.”

Inspired by the monthly “Our News” section of Essence magazine, content for the segments will be developed collaboratively. Online users also can view the “What Matters” segments on-demand at CNN.com and on Mondays via CNN.com Live, the Internet’s only live multi-stream video news service. This online content will be available beginning May 15.

In addition, Essence.com will offer users related articles, additional commentary, blog discussions and the opportunity to view the “What Matters” segments.

What Matters is sponsored by McDonald’s, who is also the presenting sponsor of CNN’s “Black in America 2,” the sequel series to 2008’s initiative. Reported by CNN anchor and special correspondent Soledad O’Brien, “Black in America 2″ reveals the stories of community leaders and innovative pioneers who are creating solutions to challenges within African-American communities — closing achievement gaps in education, reducing health disparities, and launching business enterprises.

The two primetime documentaries for the series premiere on Wednesday, July 22, and Thursday, July 23. The 2009 co-production with Essence Communications, CNN & Essence: “Reclaiming the Dream 2,” will be filmed on July 4 at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans.

STEVIE WONDER HOLDING FREE CONCERT

Stevie Wonder

Stevie Wonder

Stevie Wonder is scheduled to give a free outdoor concert on the opening night of this year’s Montreal Jazz Festival, to be held from June 30 through July 12.
The gig will double as the inaugural performance at the Place des Festival, a new plaza that a press release describes as part of a still-under-construction public space that “will likewise ensure the future of the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal.”

Wonder’s set–which will also be viewable on giant screens that will be deployed on other stages throughout the festival site–is one of more than 650 free outdoor concerts set to take place during the multi-day festival. Details for additional free outdoor concerts and activities will be announced June 8, according to organizers.

Among the more than 150 confirmed artists are Jeff Beck, Harlem Gospel Choir, Buddy Guy, Mos Def, Pink Martini, The Dears, The Orb, Burning Spear and Toots & The Maytals. A complete list of confirmed acts is available at the festival’s Web site, as is ticketing information.

SERENA PULLS OUT OF COMPETITION

Serena

Serena

Injured Serena Williams lost her third consecutive clay court match on Monday when she withdrew from her first round bout against Francesca Schiavone while trailing 4-6.
The move leaves her in a questionable position for the May 24 start of the French Open, where she is the reigning champion.

“After the first set I did not want to risk anymore. I’m hoping to be ready for Roland Garros,” she insisted.

Williams, who also lost in Marbella and last week in Rome and has suffered with thigh and knee injuries, effectively stayed on court for 45 minutes to avoid a $75,000 fine which the WTA would have imposed for failing to play the new tournament. The sanction would have been imposed had she pulled out of the event and then not shown up on site for essentially a public relations appearance under the rules.

The world number 2 has already lost several hundred thousand dollars in year-end bonus pool money as a result of refusing to compete at Indian Wells last March.

“I don’t know about you, but $75,000 is a lot of money to me,” Serena told reporters. “I’m redecorating a house and $75,000 is my furniture budget, some stairs… I can’t just go writing checks for $75,000 in this economy.”

Williams said she’s aiming to play both singles and doubles at the French Open, starting a week from Sunday.

SYKES ASKED ABOUT JOKE

Wanda Sykes

Wanda Sykes

The White House on Monday expressed disapproval of Wanda Sykes’ joke at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner that suggested conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh was a September 11th hijacker.
Some commentators thought the comedian went too far in talking about Limbaugh. When asked about it at Monday’s daily briefing, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs – who was on the top table at the dinner with President Obama when the joke was made – said he had not talked to the president specifically about the joke.

But he added: “I think there are a lot of topics that are better left for serious reflection rather than comedy.”

“I think there’s no doubt that 9/11 is part of that,” Gibbs said, pointing out the fact that Sykes was booked by the association not the White House.

At the annual dinner, where Washington political types mix with A-list Hollywood stars, Sykes referred to Limbaugh, a fierce Obama critic, as the “20th hijacker,” accused him of treason and referenced his former addiction to pain killers.

Riffing off Limbaugh’s controversial recent remark that he hoped Obama fails, Sykes said “I hope his kidneys fail, how about that?”

Obama, seated close to Sykes on the stage, was seen to smile uncomfortably

J LO TALKS ABOUT LUMP

Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez

During Sunday night’s Noche de Niños gala benefit for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), Jennifer Lopez talked about how she and her husband Marc Anthony freaked out when they found a lump on their daughter’s head at 3-weeks old.

“We both got very nervous, very very nervous, and I just remember my heart sinking to my feet,” Lopez told E! Online of Emme, twin brother to Max. “I looked at [Marc] and I said, ‘You know if anything happens, I’m not going to be OK, you know that, right?'”

Lopez and Anthony rushed Emme to Children’s Hospital, where she underwent a battery of tests, including an MRI. “Luckily, in the end,” Lopez said, “she turned out fine.”

The experience, however, made her think about those parents who don’t have the money to pay for sudden medical procedures. “I started to wonder,” Lopez said, “what if I couldn’t afford a doctor or receive the medicines, the procedures?”

So shortly after the scare, the singer-actress teamed with CHLA to form the Maribel Foundation to help provide pediatric medical services to the less fortunate.

During the Noche de Niños gala, Lopez premiered a new song, which she wrote for her twins. A recording of the ballad was played during a video highlighting the Foundation’s work. In it Lopez sings, “Let’s keep this time for us and make it last as long as we can. It’s already going too fast.”

BROWN DENIES LEAKING PHOTOS

Chris Brown

Chris Brown

Chris Brown has denied Internet gossip that he leaked a batch of photos that allegedly show Rihanna buck naked.
The seven images, which began surfacing on Friday, apparently show the “Umbrella” singer in various states of undress. They are said to reveal various body parts and appear to have been taken in a bathroom and bedroom, according to the New York Post’s Page Six.

Bloggers immediately speculated that Brown, currently facing felony charges that he beat Rihanna, unleashed the photos as payback. But Brown says he had nothing to do with it.

A rep for Brown tells Essence.com, “This is both a false and defamatory statement. Chris has not released or ‘leaked’ any photos of Rihanna (or anyone else for that matter).”

OBAMA BRINGS THE LAUGHS AT WEEKEND EVENT

Barack Obama

Barack Obama

President Barack Obama poked fun at his own administration and took a few playful swipes at his critics in both the media and the Republican party at Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington D.C.
Wanda Sykes was the featured roaster at the annual black tie affair, attended by a mix of politicians, celebrities and journalists to raise money for journalism scholarships.

Obama was slotted before the comic and took full advantage of his proximity to those who have been his most vocal adversaries – namely Fox News, whose Glenn Beck and Bill O’Reilly were in attendance, and Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele.

“Where’s Michael Steele? There he is, in the heezy. Whassup?” yelled Obama, mocking the GOP leader’s frequent attempts at using urban slang to attract younger members.

“Michael for the last time, the Republican party does not qualify for a bailout. Rush Limbaugh does not count as a troubled asset, I’m sorry,” Obama added.

The president also ribbed the so-called “liberal media” by thanking the entire room for their votes in November, then adding, “My apologies to Fox News.”

Former Vice President Dick Cheney couldn’t make the dinner, Obama joked, because he was writing his memoir, “How to shoot friends and interrogate people.”

Obama targeted his own miscues as well. “No president in history has ever named three commerce secretaries this quickly,” Obama said. The president’s two top choices for the position dropped out.

He poked fun at his frequent use of a teleprompter and Vice President Joe Biden’s knack for speaking off the cuff. And about the Democratic party, he said his administration has helped in “bringing in fresh, young faces — like Arlen Specter,” the 79-year-old Pennsylvania senator who switched parties last month.

SNOOP DOGG CLEARED OF CHARGES

Snoop Cleared

Snoop Cleared

A civil jury on Friday cleared Snoop Dogg of civil assault and battery claims in the beating of a fan who stormed the concert stage during a 2005 concert near Seattle.

The jury, however, did find that Richard Monroe Jr. suffered serious injuries during the concert and awarded him $449,400 in damages to be paid by a record label, another performer and others involved in the concert, reports the Associated Press.

The damages awarded were substantially lower than the $22 million Monroe sought when he sued the rapper in 2006.

Jurors found that Snoop Dogg, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, doesn’t personally owe Monroe anything. The artist was not in court Friday for the verdict, but he attended part of the trial and testified, denying that he struck Monroe.

During two weeks of testimony, jurors were repeatedly shown a video of a melee that Monroe said left him unconscious, badly bruised and nearly naked. Monroe’s attorney, Brian E. Watkins, said jurors did believe his client’s contention that Snoop’s people were involved in a savage beating.

“We’re very pleased that the jury found that this incident was not something to be taken lightly,” Watkins said.

Responsibility for paying the judgment falls on Doggystyle Records, which Broadus founded; rapper Soopafly, whose real name is Priest Brooks; and other unnamed parties.

KFC PROMO OUT OF HAND

kfc

KFC has had to reign in their free grilled chicken giveaway launched on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” last week due to what the fast-food chain called an “overwhelming response.”

Roger Eaton, president of KFC in the United States, said restaurants would no longer immediately redeem the free coupons for its new grilled chicken meal after Oprah’s talk show promotion caused long lines and short tempers around the country.

“The lines of customers wanting to redeem their coupons have been out the door and around the block, so we’re unable to redeem customer coupons at this time.” Eaton said in a statement issued late Thursday.

KFC said millions of Americans had downloaded free coupons after the offer was featured on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and Web site on Tuesday, driving traffic to levels unseen in the brand’s 50-year history. Eaton apologized to customers for the changes to the scheme and said those who already had a coupon could get a rain check form to enable them to use it at a later date.

Joseph Simmons, AKA Reverend Run, and also Run from the seminal rap group Run-DMC, has a teenage son who’s in trouble with the law.

According to police, the younger Simmons was behind the wheel of his BMW, which has “JoJo” embroidered on the head rests, rolling a joint when the narcs came up and knocked on his window.

He jammed the car into reverse and tried to flee but slammed into a parked car. He then tried to go forward but hit another parked car, police said. Then things really got worse because he starting fighting with officers, said police.

JoJo was charged with attempted reckless endangerment, criminal use of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest and criminal possession of marijuana.

THE MUSIC STOPS FOR LITTLE KIM

Lil Kim

Lil Kim

Something is not right in the universe today. And it could be because Kimberly Jones a/k/a Lil Kim, the curvaceous, hip wriggling, pint-sized rapper known the world over has been …. eliminated from “Dancing With The Stars!” Even though she consistently scored high marks throughout the competition, she got the boot last night. If you didn’t see the show you’re probably asking why.
It seems her downfall started Monday night. It seems she faltered during her waltz with professional partner Derek Hough. Judge Carrie Ann Inaba said she saw “a lot of missteps.” But the judges unanimously praised Lil Kim’s salsa which won praise from Bruno Tonioli, who gushed, “Your booty can do no wrong.”
The rapper came into Tuesday’s results show with the week’s second-lowest score: 52 points out of 60. Meanwhile, rodeo champ Ty Murray was in last place with 46 points, but fans kept him afloat, sending him on to compete in next week’s semifinal round.
Viewer votes are combined with judges’ scores to determine which couple is eliminated each week.
Lil Kim kept a smile on her face as she learned her fate.
“This is one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever experienced in my life,” she said, adding that she expanded the hit show’s viewership, “because I brought people who never watched the show.”
Derek Hough, Kim’s professional dancing partner, said she has been one of his favorites.
“She’s an amazing person, an amazing soul, and amazing spirit and an amazing dancer,” he said.
Of course with this being “Dancing With The Stars” and Lil Kim, you know it was only a matter of time before there was some drama. It seems that Judge Bruno Tonioli, in his attempt to critique Kim one last time, called her a tramp more or less. (No he didn’t!)

SOAR THROAT STOPS HUDSON TOUR

Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer Hudson was forced to put her tour with Robin Thicke on hold this week while being treated for a throat condition related to her singing.
Monday night’s stop in Oakland, Calif., was scrapped and rescheduled for May 19, and this week’s concerts in Dallas and Houston have also been postponed until later dates, according to Thicke’s rep.

Hudson’s last performance was Saturday at L.A.’s Nokia Theatre, with a celeb-filled audience that included “Dreamgirls” director Bill Condon and producer Larry Mark, and Gina Prince-Bythewood, who directed her in last year’s “The Secret Life of Bees.” Chaka Khan popped onstage to join Hudson for her cover of “Sweet Thing.”

E! Online’s Marc Malkin reports, “Throughout her hour-long set, she was hitting all of those very high and very powerful notes that she’s become so famous for. Her best numbers were ‘You Pulled Me Through’ and ‘If This Isn’t Love.’ No surprise, but her one encore was ‘And I Am Telling You (I’m Not Going)’ from Dreamgirls.

“Now, what about that rumored pregnancy? Ms. Hudson made no mention of expecting—or not expecting, for that matter—her first child with fiancé David Otunga. However, her all-black ensemble was unable to hide what appeared to be a baby bump.”

ARETHA SAYS PUT THE MONEY IN THE HAT

Aretha Franklin

Aretha Franklin

A retail version of the infamous hat worn by Aretha Franklin during President Obama’s inauguration became a hot seller in the following days and weeks, and now the Queen of Soul says she deserves a cut of the profits.
Luke Song, whose custom-designed women’s hats have been mainstays among Detroit’s stylish churchgoers, got a flood of calls after Franklin wore the grey, felt hat with a Swarovski rhinestone-bordered bow while performing “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” on Jan. 20 in Washington. Song sold a retail version for $179.

According to NBC Newschannel, Franklin told Detroit radio station WWJ-AM she thinks she “should be getting big-time royalties from him.”

In the June issue of Ladies’ Home Journal, “American Idol” judge Paula Abdul finally comes clean about her longtime addiction to painkillers.

“I could have killed myself,” said the 46-year-old former Los Angeles Lakers cheerleader. “Withdrawal – it’s the worst thing.”

“I was freezing cold, then sweating hot, then chattering and in so much pain, it was excruciating,” she adds. “But at my very core, I did not like existing the way I had been.”

Abdul says she checked herself into the La Costa Resort and Spa, in Carlsbad, Calif., last Thanksgiving to help kick her abuse of prescription medication.

The one time choreographer first began taking pain medication to address injuries suffered during her years as a dancer – beginning with a back injury when she was 17 and including a neck injury sustained in a plane crash in 1993.

“I’d been working nonstop,” she said, adding that her desire to carry on with her work led her to take more pain pills.

“I’m an old school professional,” Abdul says of her “Never let them see you sweat” credo.

By 2005, Abdul was diagnosed with reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome, a chronic condition that resulted in debilitating pain. As a result, she wore a pain patch and took nerve medication and, occasionally, a muscle relaxant. The combo made her “get weird,” she says.

Thanks to her 15th surgery, yoga and spiritual workshops, she says she feels 96 percent better. Now more comfortable in her role on “Idol,” Abdul says she still has some issues with Cowell.

“He’s like the brother I never had – or wanted,” she says. “From day one, Simon and I have had a love-hate relationship”

On tomorrow’s “Idol,” Abdul is expected to perform her new single “I’m Just (Here for the Music),” which Ryan Seacrest premiered on his KIIS-FM radio show Tuesday.
