MOBB DEEP DOING OKAY AFTER EMERGENCY LANDING

Mobb Deep and newcomers Sam Scarfo and 40 Glocc were traveling to South America for a series of shows in Chile this weekend when their plane was forced to make an emergency landing. Allhiphop.com reports that the entourage missed their initial connecting flight to Chile early Saturday morning, October 21st, so they took Delta Flight 147 but about an hour into the flight, the plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Tampa, Florida.

The airline issued a statement that read, “Almost an hour into the flight, the plane began dropping and rising and dropping again, soon after which passengers noticed flames and smoke pouring out of one of the engines.”

According to the pilot, one of the plane’s engines had stop working. The plane was able to land safely at 12:30 a.m. in Tampa as emergency crews watched.

Mobb Deep’s Havoc said, “All I can say is God was on our side. It could [have] turned out the opposite way! It makes you look at many things in perspective.”

The entire group decided to return to New York instead of going to Chile. The group hasn’t released any information on when or if they will make up the South American tour dates.

In related news, Mobb Deep will be releasing a greatest hits set next Tuesday, October 31st.

NELLY GETS PROPS FOR APPLE BOTTOM JEANS

Rapper and entrepreneur Nelly will be honored by The Black Retail Action Group, Inc. this Friday, October 27th, at the organization’s 36th Annual Scholarship and Awards Dinner at Cipriani Wall Street. Nelly, who is CEO of Apple Bottom Jeans and co-owner of the NBA’s Bobcats, will receive BRAG’s Special Recognition Award for his achievements in business and his commitment to underprivileged groups through his charitable organizations and student scholarships.

Former NFL linebacker Carl Banks, Stephanie Murphy, Vice President of Retail Sales for the NBA Store, Cyndi Bickerstaff, President & CEO of Bickerstaff Sports & Entertainment and Nick Grayston, President/CEO, Foot Locker, Foot Action, and Kids Foot Locker America, will also be honored during the event.

In related news, Nelly will be heading back into the studio soon to work on a new album which he hopes to release next summer.

LLOYD BANKS SAYS THERE’S NO BEEF WITH DIPSET

Last month Lloyd Banks and the G-Unit performed at a back to school concert that was co-headlined by the Diplomats’ Jim Jones at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, Long Island. According to witnesses at the event, members of the G-Unit were backstage, chanting “Boring” instead of “Ballin,” which is the chorus of Jones’ hit song, “We Fly High.”

Banks told MTV.com, “Nah, I mean there ain’t no problem, man. Whenever you get a lot of energy into the same building, people don’t know what to expect. So just walking by somebody without saying, ‘Wassup,’ might get taken the wrong way. But it’s nothing. We do what we do, they do what they do. We’re holdin’ NYC down. Unnecessary problems shouldn’t occur. If it ain’t no problem there, then keep it goin’.”

The rapper added, “But I can’t X out anything. Who knows? Records might come. That goes for anybody who you don’t have a solid beef with. I don’t really got beef with nobody. I got bread. … Nah, ain’t no beef with them.”

Banks released his sophomore album, The Rotten Apple, earlier this month. The set debuted at Number Three on the Billboard 200 albums chart last week after selling 142,000 copies its first week in stores.

The new album isn’t the only new material from Banks on the streets. He’s been putting out a steady diet of mixtapes and he’s scheduled to release a new one within the next two week. Banks said, “I’m gonna let the album breathe about two weeks. But I got Mo’ Money in the Bank Pt. 5 already geared up and ready to go. Mo’ Money in the Bank Pt. 4 with DJ Whoo Kid is on the street right now — (the one with) the green cover. Now it’s time for the blue cover. That’ll be out in a matter of days.”

SNOOP DOGG CAUGHT WITH WEAPON AT AIRPORT

Snoop Dogg may be facing criminal charges after a 21-inch collapsible baton was found in his bags as he boarded a flight headed to New York. The rapper, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, was going through a security checkpoint at John Wayne International Airport in California on September 27, when the baton was found in his laptop bag. Snoop told sheriff’s deputies that the baton was a prop for a movie he was filming in New York. “He had a collapsible baton and it is classified as a dangerous weapon,” sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino told the Associated Press. Prosecutors have not decided on whether to charge the rapper, who was not arrested at the scene.

This isn’t the first time Snoop has had a problem at an airport.

In April, he and five other men were arrested on charges of violent disorder and starting a brawl after some members of his entourage were denied entry to British Airways’ first-class lounge at Heathrow Airport in London. Seven officers received minor injuries and one suffered a fracture to the hand in the altercation.

Last month British Airways announced that Snoop is banned from future travel on the airline.

PAPOOSE SHOOTS TWO VIDEOS

Brooklyn-based rapper Papoose will release two videos in the coming weeks as he puts the finishing touches on his Jive Records debut, Nacirema Dream, which is due out in January. The rapper will release his official lead single later this fall. MTV.com reports that Papoose shot the videos for “Alphabetical Slaughter” and “Ghetto Soldier” featuring Akon in his hometown, Brooklyn.

Papoose said, “‘Ghetto Soldier,’ basically the concept of the video is showing the comparison of the soldier that’s going to war in Afghanistan and the everyday ghetto soldiers that are losing their lives. It’s a visual metaphor between the two. People could see they going to war over there, but it’s everyday war we going through in the ‘hood. We showing both sides of the fence. I think the video made a good statement in the end. We’re all fighting for different causes, but at the end of the day, it’s a loss of life.”

As for the “Alphabetical Slaughter” video, the rapper said, “They gonna use a lot of different graphics to bring it to life. But it’s me spittin’ the lyrics. One scene shows a different learning process. You got my man with the boxing gloves and somebody is training him, he’s learning to fight. Then there’s this female who’s sitting down learning schoolwork. It’s more like a lesson. ‘Alphabetical Slaughter’ is a lesson to MCs. Throughout the video you gonna see a lot. This is just a warning shot, me making my introduction to the mainstream.”

Papoose has been anointed as the rapper that will bring New York City back to forefront by some hip hop fans. The rapper shared his thoughts on being the one to bring New York back. He said: “Basically I’m just gonna be myself and do what I do. I feel like people got to you know, people go to elect you as the individual to bring New York back to the forefront. I’m not one to stand up here and say you know, ‘I’m bringing New York back.’ I speak by what the people say. The people got to elect you as king or anything.”

The rapper added: “So you know a lot of fans are saying that. Even when I’m in the south, they saying, ‘Yo, we like how you bringing New York back.’ So you know I’m just gonna be myself and continue what I do with my God given talent, you know what I mean?”

In addition to the new album, Papoose is working on a mixtape from his group, Thugacation, which he plans to release in the coming weeks.

BEYONCE ACCOMPANIES JAY-Z TO AUSTRALIA

Busy Beyonce is taking a bit of time out from promoting her brand new album B’Day to accompany boyfriend Jay-Z on his world tour. The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the “Ring The Alarm” diva and her rap star beau flew into the Australian metropolis by private jet from Bangkok on Monday morning.

Jay-Z kicks off the Australian leg of his worldwide Roc Tha Block tour Wednesday night at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. He’ll also make concert stops in Brisbane and Melbourne with Rihanna and Ne-Yo as opening acts.

No word yet on whether Miss B will jump on stage as part of his Australian performances. At a recent show at London’s Wembley Arena, Jay invited Beyonce on stage to perform a version of her hits “Crazy In Love” and “Deja Vu.”

JOHNTA AUSTIN SAYS UPCOMING ALBUM ECHOES MIAMI’S SOUTH BEACH VIBE

Singer and songwriter Johnta Austin says that his upcoming debut album, Ocean Drive, captures some of the sexy, party feeling of the famous South Beach thoroughfare in Miami. Austin says that the town’s shopping, restaurants, and hot clubs make it an ultimate pleasure destination that listeners will identify with whether they’ve been there or not. Said Austin: “That’s what this album’s gonna make you do – – it’s gonna make you go, ‘Oh yeah.’ So — because it’s provocative, it’s bold, it’s sexy. There are no inhibitions on this album, just like there are no inhibitions on Ocean Drive.”

The singer’s first single, “Turn It Up,” is climbing the urban AC radio charts. The tune is a tribute to the soul music of the past three decades. And while it is his first hit as a performer, the 26-year-old has already become one of pop music’s most reliable hitmakers as a songwriter over the past two years.

Austin has co-written Mariah Carey’s “Don’t Forget About Us,” “Shake It Off,” and “We Belong Together”; Jessica Simpson’s “A Public Affair”; Mary J. Blige’s “Be Without You”; among others. This year he also earned his first Grammy Award in the Best R&B Song category for “We Belong Together.”

Ocean Drive will be released December 26th by So So Def/Virgin Records.

INDIA.ARIE SAYS ‘HEART OF THE MATTER’ WAS TRUE TO HER LIFE

India.Arie’s version of the Don Henley tune “Heart Of The Matter” is getting airplay at a number of smooth jazz radio stations these days. The tune is from her current album, Testimony Vol. 1: Life And Relationship.

The Atlanta-based singer songwriter says that although she knew the tune, it was her manager who really alerted her to listening to it again. Arie says that she was struck by how the lyrics about mending after a broken love affair applied to her own life. She said: “My manager heard it on the radio, and I know that song of course. I never thought about covering it, but she heard it on the radio and she said, ‘You should pull this up on the Internet.’ So I did, and we were both astounded by how it spoke to me with such laser-point accuracy (laughs) and to the whole thing that I was dealing with in my life with that relationship and, you know, seeking to learn the lesson.”

Arie’s version of the tune has reached Number 14 on the national smooth jazz airplay chart and is still climbing. Meanwhile, another tune from the album, “There’s Hope,” is quickly moving up the urban AC airplay charts.

PUSSYCAT DOLLS SINGER PLANS 2007 ALBUM

Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger plans to release her debut solo album early next year. According to MTV.com, she’s collaborating with a host of producers and artists, including Timbaland and Will.I.Am. Scherzinger is looking forward to branching out on her own, saying, “I’m excited because it’s really fresh, something new. I like to sing a lot of styles and kinds of music, so it’s kind of an infusion of all kinds of things.”

A second Pussycat Dolls album is in the works too, as well as an upcoming tour with Christina Aguilera.

Scherzinger sang backup for late-’90s rockers Days of the New and fronted the girl group Eden’s Crush. She has teamed up with Will Smith and Shaggy and also appears on Diddy’s single “Come To Me.”

Scherzinger, who has had bit parts in a couple of TV shows and movies, says she hopes to do some more acting down the line.

GEORGE BENSON & AL JARREAU ARE ‘GIVIN’ IT UP’ TODAY

The new album by multiple Grammy-winning jazz and R&B titans George Benson and Al Jarreau, titled Givin’ It Up, is being released by Monster Music/Concord Records. The recording match up finds the two artists doing what they do best on a range of R&B and pop cover tunes, including new versions of Benson’s hit “Breezin'” and Jarreau’s hit “Mornin’.”

In addition, Benson and Jarreau are supported by a who’s who of guest artists and musicians, including Paul McCartney, Jill Scott, Herbie Hancock, Marcus Miller , Patrice Rushen, Stanley Clarke, Marion Meadows, Barry Eastmond, Patti Austin, and others.

Jarreau says he has long admired Benson’s work but had only dreamed of working with him up until this project. He told me: “George and I have known each other for a long time and we’ve appreciated each other’s work for a long time. George is one of those artists for me whose name kind of flits through your head as you think, ‘Oh, wouldn’t it be wonderful to play with Herbie Hancock, wouldn’t it be wonderful to play with the London Symphony Orchestra, wouldn’t it be wonderful to sing something with Barbra Streisand, ooh …’ That kind of wishful thinking. That stuff comes and goes with the moment.”

Benson and Jarreau completed a national tour with opener Raul Midon in August. They are lining up dates for a second leg in 2007.

First single “Mornin'” landed most recently at Number Five on the smooth jazz airplay charts.

MADONNA ON ‘OPRAH’ TODAY

Madonna will publicly talk about her planned adoption for the first time on the Oprah Winfrey Show today (Wednesday, October 25th). The TV appearance comes just days after the boy’s father, Yohane Banda, said that he didn’t realize he was signing away custody of his son, David, “for good.” Banda told US Weekly, “If we were told that she wants to take the baby as her own we could not have consented because I see no reason why I should give away my son.” But Penson Kilembe, director of child welfare in the Ministry of Women and Child Development, told Reuters that Banda said he understood what was going on at the time, saying, “We explained every detail, and Madonna herself explained her intentions in the face of the judge and in Banda’s presence. He (Banda) was asked several times in court if he understood what was going on and he said he did.”

Madonna and her husband Guy Ritchie were granted an interim adoption order for the 13-month-old Malawian boy, who was taken to London last week. The singer was in the African country for eight days visiting orphanages that she’s funding through her organization, Raising Malawi.

‘DANCING WITH THE STARS’ CONTESTANT SAYS JUDGING UNFAIR

Last week’s unplanned exit of Dancing With The Stars contestant Sara Evans took the heat off another contestants’ allegations that the show was sexist. After last week’s judging, Monique Coleman complained that the panel gave male celebrities more slack than their female counterparts. Coleman told Extra, “You have to split, bend over backward, touch our toe to our heads to get recognized. The men walk out there, sit down and have a woman dance around them and get higher scores.”

Coleman does have a point, especially when you consider someone like Jerry Springer. Despite his lack of agility or strength, the daytime talk show host is still in the running this week. He survived elimination last week because of a special exemption due to Evans’ departure, but aside from that, he’s made it this far solely because of his partner’s ability to make him look good. Springer said himself that his favorite dance was one where he’s not participating: “It’s called the ‘Lie-down.’ And what you do is, you take your body, and you lie down on the floor, and you close your eyes until the dance is over.”

Dancing With The Stars producers have not commented on Coleman’s allegations.

The show airs Tuesdays and Wednesdays on ABC.

FILMS OUT OF AFRICA GETTING MORE MAINSTREAM

Films set in Africa and about Africans are become more mainstream, say film industry watchers. According to an AP feature story, international filmmakers have found stories they want to tell there and Hollywood has taken an interest in serious films set on the Continent. The new trend comes on the heels of the international success of last year’s South African film Tsotsi, which took the best foreign film Oscar this year. That film followed strong showings for Hotel Rwanda, starring Don Cheadle, and The Constant Gardener, starring Ralph Fiennes.

Actor Forest Whitaker is earning Oscar buzz for his performance as Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in The Last King Of Scotland, and Derek Luke and Tim Robbins star in the upcoming South African anti-apartheid drama Catch A Fire. Also coming up is Blood Diamond, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Djimon Honsou in a tale about the Sierra Leone diamond trade, due in December.

Previous films set in Africa tended to focus on the white experience, such as Out Of Africa, about 19th century Danish author Isak Dinesen, or Cry Freedom, a view of South African anti-apartheid activist Stephen Biko through the eyes of a white journalist. Today’s slate of films focus on African characters and/or the global impact of African events.

“I think the world is turning its attention to Africa, postcolonial Africa. It’s a great source of conflict, and conflict is what makes drama, and drama attracts storytellers and filmmakers,” said Catch A Fire’s Australian director Phillip Noyce. “Maybe these stories were always bubbling up under the surface. Suddenly, the success of one film allowed those with the power to greenlight films to say yes with some confidence.”

“There is a deep, archetypal, mythical quality sometimes to the stories. They become so large,” said actor/director Whitaker about the appeal of African stories. “When you think about Mandela, Biko, they become like some mythic parable somebody would tell or write in some book that children would read a thousand years from now.”

“Africa has been underrepresented in our literature and our storytelling generally,” said King Of Scotland director Kevin Macdonald. “So filmmakers cast around. Should I make another film in New York? It’ll be the 10,000th film to shoot in New York. Or should I go somewhere else that hasn’t been filmed?”
