GOOD MORNING AMERICA’S ROBIN ROBERTS DIAGNOSED WITH BREAST CANCER
robin-roberts.jpg

Robin Roberts, co-host of ABC’s Good Morning America, announced Tuesday (July 31st) that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. She is expected to undergo surgery on Friday (August 3rd).

The popular co-anchor posted the news on ABC’s website, noting that it was reporting a special tribute to ABC’s longtime movie critic Joel Siegel, who had stressed the importance of early screening before succumbing to colon cancer a few weeks ago, that prompted a self-examination.

“That very night when I went to bed, I did a self breast exam and found something that women everywhere fear: I found a lump,” she wrote at ABCNews.com. She added, “I never thought I’d be writing…I have breast cancer.” The 46-year-old Roberts discussed her diagnosis on air Tuesday with co-anchor Diane Sawyer, saying that she does not have a family history of breast cancer, and that she will maintain an upbeat attitude.

“I will get up like everybody else, I will go to work, I’ll say ‘Good Morning America,’ I will have my good days and bad days, so be kind to me on the message board when I’ve had my bad days and the hair goes,” she joked on the program.

She also grabbed Sawyer’s hand and raised it up. “This is my Thelma,” Roberts explained, referring to the 1991 Susan Sarandon-Geena Davis film. “We call ourselves Thelma And Louise, and we’re in the convertible right now. Full speed ahead.”

DEBARGE FAMILY ON THE MOVE

debarge-family.jpg
If you can count the number of family members in the DeBarge family, that would be close to an accurate count of the number of projects being released or under production. I had a conversation with them last week and in a few days look for a complete update on the DeBarge singing family, here at the Morning Show Update.

WILL.I.AM TO DELIVER ‘SONGS ABOUT GIRLS’
will-i-am.jpg

Multi-talented rapper, producer, and entrepreneur Will.I.Am takes a step away from his platinum- selling group the Black Eyed Peas to release the new solo set Songs About Girls, due September 25th on his own Will.I.Am Music Group label, through Interscope. The new concept album is the first through his own imprint, and eight of the tracks will feature interconnected videos that the Grammy-winning artist shot in Brazil within a two- week period.

The first single from the set is the tune “I Got It From My Mama,” which was written, performed and produced by Will.I.Am. The only special guest on the set is Snoop Dogg, who adds some classic hip-hop flavor to the track “Donque.”

COMMON ENJOYING POSITIVE FEEDBACK FROM NEW ALBUM
common.jpg

Chicago-based rapper Common has been an underdog throughout his career because of the content of his music but following the release of his last album, Be, fans now expect a lot more from the rapper and he hasn’t let them down. Common told MTV.com, “It’s a new feeling for me, because I feel like more people are appreciating (my music) already. Because of the success of Be and other things I’ve been doing and working on, more people are paying attention to what I’m doing. That’s a good feeling.”

ANDRE 3000 DISCUSSES UPCOMING FILM PROJECTS
andre-3000.jpg

OutKast’s Andre 3000 recently visited Comic-Con to promote his hit cartoon series, Class of 3000. The rapper told MTV.com, “It’s my first time being out here at Comic-Con, and it is crazy. It’s inspiring. To me, it’s like you can be a kid again. … It reminds you of all the things you used to love, before you had to put on a suit and go to a corporate job. It’s like dream land or fantasy land — and I dig that.”

While Andre 3000 was excited about attending the convention, he shared that he was equally excited about some of his upcoming screen work. The rapper’s next two movie projects are The Battle in Seattle, a drama about the World Trade Organization starring Woody Harrelson and Charlize Theron, and Semi- Pro, a basketball movie with Will Ferrell that won’t hit theaters until next year. The rapper said, “I am playing a 1970s basketball star showoff on the team, and we are trying to make it to the NBA. It’s hilarious.”

The movie Andre 3000 is really big on is the Sammie Davis Jr. biopic, Sammie and Kim. He said, “Well, actually, I just got the script. I am checking it out now, and we will see where it goes from there.”

They’re several Sammie Davis biopics in the works but Andre 3000 shared why Sammie and Kim is special. He said, “It’s about Sammy and (actress) Kim (Novak). It happens in 24 hours, and I am pretty excited about it.”

USHER & TAMEKA SAY WEDDING IS SIMPLY POSTPONED
usher-and-fiance.jpg

Details surrounding the canceled wedding of Usher and pregnant fiancee Tameka Foster continue to surface. While the couple called off the nuptials just hours before they were to take place at the Hamptons estate of music exec L.A. Reid last Saturday (July 28th), both sides say the engagement is still on and that the wedding has simply been postponed. “As of right now we don’t have a date but we will let you know when we do,” Usher told Us Weekly.

Foster also shed some light on the situation, telling People Magazine: “No one knows why we canceled the wedding, but I can tell you that all of the reasons that everyone is speculating and writing about are completely untrue.”

She added that she did have a bit of a medical scare on the same day, checking into a local hospital briefly. “We had a scare,” she told US Weekly, adding, “But, I am fine and the baby is fine.”

Usher and Tameka’s announcement that Saturday’s wedding was off came just hours ahead of the ceremony, with some of the estimated 100 guests about to board a shuttle bus to the location. While no reason was given for the cancellation, speculation is that Usher felt he could not go through with the wedding plans without the blessing of his mother and former manager Jonetta Patton, who disapproved the match. Sources say that the singer immediately headed to Atlanta this week to reconcile with his mom. Patton, who Usher replaced as manager with Foster back in May, was initially not invited to the wedding but reportedly received a last-minute invite after Foster relented. But Patton, who has not spoken publicly about her son’s nuptials, declined to attend.

The New York Daily News quoted a source Monday (July 30th) who said Patton’s absence was a major factor in Usher’s decision to cancel the wedding. “The reason he called off the ceremony is that he couldn’t go through with it without Jonetta,” said the source. “He had an eleventh-hour epiphany.”

Tabloid reports about Foster’s alleged criminal past may also have prompted Usher to rethink the wedding bells. An article in the National Enquirer claimed that Foster has been arrested for various petty crimes, including welfare fraud, with Foster’s half-sister Valencia Foster quoted as saying, “Poor Usher has no idea who he’s marrying.”

JAY-Z LOOKING FORWARD TO 50 CENT-KANYE WEST FACE OFF
jay-z.jpg

50 Cent’s Curtis and Kanye West’s Graduation are both slated to hit stores on September 11th, and after 50 Cent suggested that West change the date last week, Def Jam president and Roc-A-Fella Records CEO Jay-Z said he would do no such thing.

Jay-Z told MTV.com, “I think it’s great, I think it’s a fantastic day for hip-hop. I remember having those dates (facing against) Outkast a couple of times. I actually had one with G- Unit (with Beg for Mercy). It’s great. It’s a fantastic thing for hip-hop, especially retail. I know they’re loving it. You’re driving people to the store. We love it, we think it’s a fantastic thing.”

The rapper added, “There’s a strategy involved. You wanna put yourself in the best position. But you do that anyway. You do that if nobody (else) was on (your release date). We’ve been plotting since his first album, when it was like, ‘We’re just gonna cover you. We’re gonna put so many people on your album with the great production.’ And then he just stood up to be an artist and that whole idea changed. So ever since that initial conversation of how we’re going to release Kanye, we never stopped plotting.”

RAIDERS SIGN CULPEPPER
daunte.jpg

The Oakland Raiders on Tuesday signed free agent quarterback Daunte Culpepper to a one-year contract.

Culpepper will give the Raiders a backup option for No. 1 overall draft pick JaMarcus Russell, who has yet to sign a contract.

The 30-year-old Culpepper had worked out earlier on Tuesday before a private gathering of Raiders scouts and coaches.

Culpepper began the 2006 season as the Dolphins’ starter, but due to injury problems he was sacked 21 times in the first four games of the season. The team benched him and eventually placed him on injured reserve.

The Dolphins acquired Trent Green in a trade with Kansas City this past offseason and, after unsuccessfully trying to trade Culpepper, released him on July 17.

Over nine seasons in the NFL, all but one with Minnesota, he has played in 85 games (84 starts) and has completed 64.2 percent of his passes for 21,091 yards with 137 touchdowns and 89 interceptions. Also, he has racked up 2,496 yards on the ground with 30 touchdowns.

MORE FALLOUT FROM USHER’S NEAR WEDDING
usher-and-former-fiance.jpg

Welcome back to the Usher & Tameka Foster soap opera or train wreck, if you prefer.

The latest in the ongoing public drama is that Tameka has now spoken out about all the rumors and speculation about her wedding to Usher that was called off at the last minute this past weekend.

“No one knows why we canceled the wedding, but I can tell you that all of the reasons that everyone is speculating and writing about are completely untrue,” Foster told People late Monday.

However, she wouldn’t say exactly why the ceremony was called off.

ANITA BAKER’S BAND INDICATES THEY DON’T NEED HER

anita-baker.jpg
Singer Anita Baker is enjoying opportunities to go out and perform in front of her fans. The Detroit- based singer has been playing select dates around the country, and says she got a creative boost from her touring band, which features a few new members, including a new drummer and keyboardist.

Baker says that the musicians were so on fire that at the first rehearsals, they grooved on without her, as she explained: “The first month or so I didn’t put a lot of dates on the calendar because I knew I was having a new rhythm section and I wanted us to have time to gel. But these guys gelled at rehearsal. I mean, I didn’t sing at rehearsal. One rehearsal I just hung my dress on the microphone stand and let ’em play, ’cause I’m like: Y’all don’t need me.”

Baker’s next concert date is August 18th at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

MARY J. BLIGE DISAPPOINTS FANS, ANGERS PROMOTER IN CINCINNATI
mary-j-blige.jpg

Superstar Mary J. Blige failed to show up for her headlining spot on the first night of the 2007 Macy’s Music Festival in Cincinnati, disappointing 20,000 fans who had waited in the rain Friday (July 27th) night at Paul Brown Stadium and angering the event’s promoter. The R&B diva was unable to take off from a New Jersey airport in a private jet because of the rainy weather, and couldn’t reschedule for Saturday (July 28th), the second day of the festival, because of another gig. While bad weather can certainly cause travel problems, the festival’s organizer says that an experienced performer like Blige should have planned better. “It was a little bit irresponsible of her to plan to leave at 4 p.m. and get here at 5:30 or 6 when you got a gig of this importance for the kind of money she was making,” promoter Joe Santangelo told the Cincinnati Post.

Santangelo further explained that he often sees unrepentant behavior from top performers: “I feel some of these artists think, ‘Oh, I got my own plane I can come and go when I want.’ They don’t stop and think there can be things beyond your control because in their mind they are in control of everything.”

Blige’s no-show came at the end of a frustrating day for Santangelo, who told The Post that he’d been dealing with the needs and demands of other members of Blige’s band and technical crew, who had arrived earlier in the day. “I spent a minimum of $7,500 between her catering and transportation,” he said. “They didn’t like one of our drivers. We had to get another one. They didn’t like the tint on one of the cars. We sent it over to Kentucky to get it re- tinted. We had to go out and buy special candles that cost $45 each for her dressing room.”

Some fans felt they deserved a refund, though none were given.

Other acts on Friday’s lineup included the O’Jays and Robin Thicke, while Saturday saw performances by Brian McKnight, Heather Headley, and Frankie Beverly & Maze.

AKON SHOWS UP IN MALTA, HAS A GAME PLAN FOR PARIS
akon.jpg

Senegalese-born hip-hop star Akon surprised fans in the tiny Mediterranean country of Malta on Saturday (July 28th), showing up at the open center for illegal immigrants in Marsa with the American ambassador there. Akon had performed at the nearby Granaries in Floriana at the Isle Of MTV Festival on Thursday.

Akon encouraged the many African immigrants, saying that the Maltese need to “come out of their shell” regarding immigration problems and adding, “We are all one people at the end of the day. Africans helped build this side of the world 300 years ago when we were taken but nobody helped build Africa. Now we need to help build that side of the world.”

The singer, who lives in Atlanta, is the founder of the Konfidence Foundation, a non-profit that is dedicated to charitable projects in Senegal and other parts of Africa.

Meanwhile, Akon continues to be a force in pop music. He reportedly wants to take on the music career of newly sprung hotel heiress Paris Hilton, according to an interview with TeenMusic.com. “In my mind I was thinking now Paris Hilton is an official convict, I think I’m gonna get with her and put a record out,” said the artist, who himself spent time in prison and called his first album Konvicted.

He added: “I would definitely sign her to my label ’cause she’s a character. You give her the cutest record, something that’s just for women, an anthem; I think it will be outta here!”

ROBIN THICKE IS KEEPING HIS TALENTS TO HIMSELF
robin-thicke.jpg

Successful singer and songwriter Robin Thicke has sold over a million copies of his latest solo album The Evolution Of Robin Thicke, but it was a long journey to stardom. Much of the way was paved with songs written for other artists, with Thicke collaborating on tunes for Usher, Christina Aguilera, Jordan Knight, Brandy, and Marc Anthony.

Now that The Evolution Of Robin Thicke, his third solo effort, has caught on with fans, Thicke says he wants to be a little more selfish about his songwriting efforts. He explained: “Yeah, I do feel right now with an opportunity to get my music and my words and my stories out there, that I really don’t want to spend too much time writing for anybody else, you know. It’s more about the words — I just feel like I have so much I want to say. I just don’t want to–I want to put it all into my own music.”

Thicke continues on the road as opener on the Beyonce Experience tour, with the next concert set for August 1st at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut.

MICHAEL VICK CO-DEFENDANT PLEADS GUILTY
michael-vick.jpg

The hot water for Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick seems to be rising, as one of his co-defendants in the federal dog fighting case plead guilty on Monday (July 30th) and pledged to cooperate with prosecutors. Tony Taylor of Hampton, Virginia, entered a guilty plea in U.S. District Court in Richmond, and is set to be sentenced December 14th.

Vick, Taylor, and two other co-defendants pleaded not guilty on Thursday (July 26th). But Taylor changed his plea on Monday. It is widely believed that his future cooperation could hurt Vick and help the government prove its case against him, according to CNN.com. Taylor ran Bad Newz Kennels in Virginia, where dogs were housed, and he and Vick are charged with buying the property for the purpose of training and fighting the dogs for purses ranging up to thousands of dollars. They and two others are accused of transporting and delivering dogs across state lines, as well as destroying under-performing animals.

Last week, Vick’s major sponsors and a trading card company dropped his contracts in light of the charges.

Meanwhile, the head of the local NAACP warned against a rush to judgment by the feds and the public. At a news conference Monday morning, the civil rights organization’s Dr. R.L. White Jr. declared, “There’s a penalty in football for piling on. After a player has been tackled and somebody piles on, they’re penalized for unnecessary roughness. Today, the NAACP blows the whistle and warns the powers that be that you are piling on.”

A trial date is set for November 26th for Vick and his other co-defendants. If convicted on both portions of the conspiracy charge, they each could be sentenced to up to six years in prison and fined $350,000, prosecutors said.

STAR JONES REYNOLDS ADMITS TO HAVING GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY
star-jones.jpg

Star Jones Reynolds admits she had gastric bypass surgery in 2003 in a new interview that appears in the September issue of Glamour magazine, on newsstands August 7. The former View co-host claims she dodged questions about how she took off the weight for years because she was “scared of what people might think of me.” Reynolds, who weighed 307 pounds at her heaviest, says she turned to food for comfort and gained 75 pounds over the course of 17 months after turning 40 in 2002. “I used to look in the mirror and take pride in my figure, but that was when I was legitimately a full-figured woman,” she says. “I’d gradually gone from full-figured to morbidly obese.”

Reynolds, who uses her maiden name professionally, will premiere The Star Jones Show August 20th on Court TV, which is soon to be known as TruTV. The show will focus on criminal justice issues that intersect with pop culture.
