SURGERY WENT WELL

Good Morning America co-anchor Robin Roberts is resting comfortably after undergoing surgery in New York City to address breast cancer. The 46-year-old newswoman’s “very successful” procedure came just three days after announcing her diagnosis on the show.

Family members, including Roberts’ mother and sisters, traveled to from the Mississippi Gulf Coast and New Orleans to be by her side. The former college hoops star and sportscaster hails from Pass Christian, Mississippi.

“The tests following her surgery take some time to process, so when we have more information, we will update you,” said an ABC News spokesperson. “Thank you for your thoughts and prayers for Robin.”

Roberts said that she did not have a family history of breast cancer, and will undergo ongoing treatment for the disease. She added that doctors believe they caught it early.

USHER REPORTEDLY TIES THE KNOT IN ATLANTA
usher-and-fiance.jpg

Just six days after canceling their lavish, star-studded wedding ceremony at the last minute, superstar Usher and his pregnant fiancee Tameka Foster have reportedly tied the knot. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the R&B star and the one-time fashion stylist swapped vows Friday (August 3rd) in the office of Usher’s Atlanta lawyer with Usher’s mom, Jonetta Patton, in attendance.

The ceremony was definitely more private and low-key than the high-profile wedding event the couple had planned for July 28th at the home of music mogul L.A. Reid in the trendy Hamptons area of Long Island, New York. The wedding was canceled amid numerous rumors as to why the groom got cold feet, including opposition from Patton, his former manager.

It was also reported that the bride was checked into an area hospital that day with a “pregnancy scare.” Foster and the baby were deemed just fine. Immediately after the July 28th nuptials were called off, Usher reportedly flew to Atlanta to talk with Patton, who was initially uninvited to the event and later refused to attend once a last-minute invitation was extended. Foster also followed her man to Atlanta.

Sources told the Chicago Sun-Times that Patton wanted an iron-clad pre-nup for the couple before the knot was tied, which may explain how Usher and Tameka wound up saying their vows in a law office.

Usher, who is 28, and Foster, who is 37, announced their engagement in February and confirmed that they are expecting in June. The baby — which would be Usher’s first and Tameka’s fourth — is expected some time this fall.

DRAMA SURROUNDS GERALD LEVERT’S ESTATE
gerald-levert.jpg

The estate of Gerald Levert is caught up in a hot legal mess that involves his cousin and executor of the estate on one side, and two women who had children with the singer on the other.

According to Cleveland.com, Levert left behind at least $2 million in assets, including two homes, two Mercedes Benz cars, jewelry, clothing, furniture, securities and bank accounts.

Levert’s cousin and business manager, Anthony “Andy” Gibson, launched proceedings in March to divvy up the estate. However, two women who bore Levert’s children – LeMicah Levert, 17 and Camryn Levert, 8 – say Gibson failed to inform them of the process, and hope to take part so that their children receive their due as his next-of-kin.

“We are being met with a lot of resistance,” said Steven Cox, who represents the mothers of LeMichah and Camryn.

A third child, 17-year-old Carlysia Levert – who was profiled on an episode of MTV’s “Sweet 16” – is also set to inherit from the estate.

The late singer’s home address is also at the root of the legal wrangling, according to the Web site. Gibson had planned to dole out the estate in Cuyahoga County Probate Court, where, he has argued, the singer lived and spent most of his work and free time. The mothers’ lawyers say the process, by law, should take place in Geauga County, where Levert had a home in Newbury Township.

Levert died in November, 2006 of an accidental prescription drug overdose.

WYCLEF JEAN CALLS OUT LAURYN HILL

Wyclef Jean recently went public with the reason behind the Fugees failed reunion attempt. During an interview with Scratch magazine, Jean accused Lauryn Hill of attempting to take production credit for music she did not produce. He said, “It’s real simple, if you did the beats, where are the beats, show us one beat that you did. If you bring Clef to the studio, put an MP, put an SP, put a bunch of stuff, bring a bunch of cameras (and) say, ‘Clef, do a beat in two minutes.’ The beat’s done. Bring Lauryn Hill in the studio with the same camera, say we give you three hours. Matter fact, f**k it, we’ll give you a month do a beat. She can’t put it together!”

Jean added that the issue came to head while he and producer Jerry Wonder were working on a remix for John Legend. He said, “We did a remix (with) Lauryn for John Legend, for the record ‘So High.’ John Legend was saying our names. You know what she had (him) do? She was like, ‘Take off Wyclef and Jerry’s names.’ Because she wanted people to think that she was the one doing the beat. I’m a producer and I’m a beatmaker with my cousin Jerry Wonder, and I’m a writer. She’s a writer, a vocalist, (and) a great (vocal) composer. And she’s great at picking out samples, she got 20 billion samples but can’t chop ’em up to save her life.”

In related news, Jean will release a new solo album in October. The new project, Carnival II: Memoirs of An Immigrant, will feature guest appearances by Mary J. Blige, Will.I.Am, Chamillionaire, and Paul Simon.

NOT ENOUGH

A day after Spice Girl Melanie Brown petitioned a Los Angeles court to have Eddie Murphy legally declared the father of four-month- old Angel Iris Murphy Brown, Murphy himself released a statement publicly acknowledging paternity. However, Brown and her lawyer, Gloria Allred, say it’s not enough.

On Friday, the 46-year-old actor’s press rep, Arnold Robinson, released a statement which said, in part, that Murphy “always has and will continue to honor his responsibilities as a father.” The statement further added, “He acknowledges paternity of the child Angel and has paid child support to Ms. Brown, as well as covering the expenses of her pregnancy.”

Finally, the statement concluded that Murphy feels the matter is private and doesn’t plan to discuss it further in the press.

Brown and Allred say that Murphy’s actions don’t satisfy all of his paternal obligations. According to a statement issued by Allred on Saturday, “He has not indicated in his statement or to us that he plans to visit the baby,” and it is Brown’s desire that the Dr. Dolittle and Daddy Daycare star “see his child, spend time with her, hold her, love her and bond with his daughter.”

Murphy recently announced his engagement to entertainment executive Tracey Edmonds. He has five children with ex-wife Nicole Mitchell, whom he divorced last year.
