FALCONS HOLD OFF ON CUTTING MICHAEL VICK

mike-vick.jpg

Shortly after suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick plead guilty to illegal dogfighting charges and held a press conference to apologize for his actions, team owner Arthur Blank said it was not in the organization’s best long-term interests to cut the convicted star from the squad. “We cannot tell you today that Michael is cut from the team,” Blank said during a press conference Monday. “Cutting him today may feel better emotionally for us and many of our fans. But it’s not in the long-term best interests of our franchise.” The announcement followed a long morning in Richmond, Va. that began with Vick’s plea of guilty to a federal dogfighting charge. The athlete’s family members, including his brother and mother Brenda Vick, sat in the front row of the packed courtroom as the suspended NFL star stood flanked by two of his five lawyers.

Pre-orders for the O.J. Simpson book If I Did It on the Barnes & Noble Web site are higher than the chain expected, but its decision not to carry the book in its stores still stands. “We still have no plans to stock it in our stores,” spokeswoman Mary Ellen Keating told The Associated Press on Sunday. Last week, Barnes & Noble said it did not expect the book to sell well and would only offer it through their Web site, Barnes & Noble.com, or by special order at a Barnes & Noble store. Since then, the book has jumped into the top 50 on the Web site and ranked No. 48 as of Sunday night.

WEST SHIFTING HIP-HOP FOCUS

cornel-west-2.jpg

Hip Hop is under constant fire for protraying negative im ages, but Princeton religion professor Cornel West says it is untapped as a positive social force, with his new album Never Forget: A Journey of Revelations, he hopes to inspire a shift in the music’s emphasis. “So much of the album has to do with trying to keep alive the spirit of Curtis Mayfield, where you bring togethr the spiritual and the social, the personal and the political, while keeping it artistic. In Hip-Hop there is a real need for that.” The album comes in the wake of the firestorm of criticism aimed at hip-hop after CBS radio shock jock Don Imus ‘ disparagin remarks abaout the Rutgers university women’s basketball tema. Imus was fired, but the debate over rap lyrics intensified. Never Forget is not a direct critique of hip-hop, but West says rappers have to be responsible for what they say and portray.

Among other salutes to charitable causes, “Giving” praises Winfrey’s “Angel Network,” which has donated millions of dollars around the world, from money for schools in Africa to relief aid for victims of Hurricane Katrina. The book also includes comments from Winfrey, who was asked why she started the Angel Network, and another charitable organization, the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls. “I wanted to give back what I was given, a sense of worth,” she replied. “Everyone wants to matter.” Clinton’s wife, Sen.
