Racial tensions have been rising around the country as nooses have turned up on high school and college campuses. Last Saturday (October 20th), a vandal placed a noose around the neck of the statue of Tupac Shakur located in the garden of the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts in Stone Mountain, Georgia. The vandals also allegedly defaced the building.

A second incident occurred at Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts early Monday morning (October 22nd). The statue of Shakur was defaced again as it was plastered with “handbills of garbled rants that include references to 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, as well as vague threats against various record companies and rappers.”

The Associated Press reports that one man has been arrested in relation to the incidents so far.

The late rapper’s mother Afeni Shakur said in a released statement, “We thank everyone for their prayers and support. Although our hearts are temporarily in pain, our spirits have already forgiven the perpetrators. Hate comes in all colors and genders therefore we will use this act of hate and ignorance to bring our community together and to pray for the healing of those who harbor such feelings. With God’s guidance, the work of the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts and Peace Garden will continue to positively impact and transform our community.”

Rapper T.I. is due back in federal court on Friday (October 26th) and a judge is expected to rule on whether or not the rapper will be released on bail. In the meantime, many of the rapper’s peers have voiced their support. reports that David Banner released a new song online, titled “B.A.N. (The Love Song)” a.k.a. “Free T.I.P.,” which addresses the situation.

Banner explained, “For the most part on the song, I’m saying we gotta take responsibility in our own community. Some of our people are messing up, but it ain’t for America to tear them down. People got on me for supporting Mike Vick, but if America don’t support him, don’t mean I gotta turn my back on him.”

50 Cent, who filled in for T.I. at the Philadelphia Powerhouse concert, also weighed in on the situation. According to the G-Unit general, T.I. may be better off copping a plea since he was set up.

50 Cent said, “I hope he can make the best out of that situation. If he gets 10 years, that ain’t bad. If the security person is already telling, it’s obvious that’s their witness. They got tapes, they got all this. … (If it was me,) I would have to tell the people I did it and sit down for a minute. Nobody wants to hear that you have to stay 10 years nowhere. It’s not a good thing, period. It’s unfortunate, but he got himself in that space. I don’t know the real facts. Maybe he didn’t do it; let’s keep our fingers crossed.”

Singer Keyshia Cole returns to TV in a second season of the BET reality show Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is, which premieres October 30th at 10:30 p.m. The new season documents Cole’s struggle to balance a difficult family life with her career as she records her sophomore CD Just Like You.

According to BET, the new season follows Cole as she invites several family members to live in her multi-million dollar Atlanta mansion. Among them are her mother, recently released from prison after serving three years for drug-related charges, and her sister, Neffie, who suffers from alcoholism. Cole’s “house rules” — including no men in the house — lead to so much discord that Cole eventually seeks professional help.

Cole’s reality show has received critical praise, mostly for the down-to-earth personality and true talent demonstrated by the multi-platinum star. Recently Cole explained that while she was always determined to be a successful recording artist, she had just one prayer: “One of the first things I asked God for when I got into the business — because I understand that it’s a blessing and He’s guided my career from the first day I left Oakland — the first thing I asked for was that it don’t change me. Because if it does, I’d rather just not be here, I’d rather be back home in the ‘hood just chillin’. I mean, it’s good to be here but it ain’t that serious.”

Meanwhile, Cole’s CD Just Like You regains the Number One spot on the Billboard Hot R&B Albums chart this week. The Oakland-born artist is boosted by the popularity of her current single “Let It Go” featuring Missy Elliott.

International singing star Seal is set to perform at the upcoming Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show where his wife Heidi Klum will be strutting the catwalk. In fact, US magazine is reporting that the German-born supermodel will join her husband to perform “Wedding Day,” a duet from the album that they recently recorded together. Kanye West and the Spice Girls will also perform on the telecast, which will air December 4th on CBS.

Seal had a Grammy-winning hit in 1995 with “Kiss From A Rose,” the track from Batman Forever that thrust him into stardom. He says he is fortunate to have lucked into the tie-in: No one in the record company believed in ‘Kiss From a Rose.’ I was just really lucky. Everyone has that stroke of luck. I had Batman Forever. It’s a stroke of luck. It’s a numbers game, and now admittedly you create your own luck because the one thing that doesn’t change — the one constant — is your focus.

Seal will release the new CD System on November 13th.

In related news, Klum appears on today’s Oprah Winfrey Show devoted to “Superstar Couples.”

On the show, Klum reveals that when she first met Seal it was lust at first sight. “I met him in a hotel lobby in New York City,” she said, “and he came in just from the gym and was sitting there and I was, like, wow.” The singer was wearing his form-fitting bicycle shorts, which inspired Klum. “I pretty much saw everything,” she said of his outfit, “the whole package.”

The couple have two children together and are also raising Klum’s child from a previous relationship.
