TONY TERRY, MALIK YOBA AND JOHNNY GILL STAR IN NEW SAM COOKE STAGE PLAY
A new play called “Sam Cooke: Forever Mr. Soul” kicks off in summer 2008, featuring multi-platinum recording artist, Johnny Gill, actor Malik Yoba, and Gospel/R&B vocalist, Tony Terry, attached to star. Playwright/director Kevin Ramsey has teamed up with rap and gospel music manager Greg “Uncle G” Lyons, veteran Wall Street analyst Randy Richardson, and entertainment attorney Terry Oneal to take the show on a 30-city road trip that will lead to a Broadway finale. Sam Cooke’s unique musical styling touched millions worldwide and his life was replete with drama and intrigue. Indeed, Sam Cooke’s life is one of the great unsolved mysteries ever to rock the music world. And in a bold grassroots effort to build awareness of the man, his song and his story, the production will feature some of the country’s most prolific gospel choirs, as local talent, in select scenes.
John F. Kennedy was sworn in as the 35th President at noon on January 20, 1961. In his inaugural address he spoke of the need for all Americans to be active citizens, famously saying, “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” He also asked the nations of the world to join together to fight what he called the “common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty, disease, and war itself.” In closing, he expanded on his desire for greater internationalism: “Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you.”
Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas. Lee Harvey Oswald was charged with the crime, but was murdered two days later by Jack Ruby before he could be put on trial. The Warren Commission concluded that Oswald had acted alone in killing the president; however, the House Select Committee on Assassinations declared in 1979 that there may have been a conspiracy. The entire subject remains controversial, with multiple theories about the assassination still being debated. The event proved to be a poignant moment in U.S. history due to its impact on the nation and the ensuing political fallout. Many regard President Kennedy as an icon of American hopes and aspirations; he continues to rank highly in public opinion ratings of former U.S. presidents.

BRAWLEY’S FAMILY WANT RAPE CASE REOPENED
Twenty years after her allegations of a racially charged rape became a national flashpoint, Tawana Brawley’s mother and stepfather are looking to reopen the case, the New York Daily News reported. Glenda Brawley and Ralph King are pressing Gov. Eliot Spitzer and state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to re-examine the November 1987 incident, which a state grand jury ultimately concluded was a hoax. “New York State owes my daughter. They owe her the truth,” said Glenda Brawley. She reiterated her stance that her daughter was indeed raped by a group of white men who smeared her with feces and scrawled racial epithets on her body. A spokesman for Spitzer said his office was not aware of any formal request from the family. The governor’s office is not normally involved in investigating crime. Brawley was 15 when she went missing for four days from her home in Wappingers Falls, about 75 miles north of New York City. After being found, she made the shocking allegation that she had been abducted and raped by six white law enforcement officials. The case quickly made headlines and drew the attention of the Rev. Al Sharpton, who became an outspoken advocate for the teen. But a special state grand jury found evidence Brawley had fabricated her story. A former Dutchess County prosecutor who had been implicated in the case later sued Brawley, Sharpton and other Brawley advisers for defamation, winning a $345,000 judgment against the advisers and a $185,000 judgment against Brawley. Sharpton was held liable for $65,000 in the case. Brawley, meanwhile, has changed her name and become a nurse, the Daily News reported.
KANYE WEST BURIES MOTHER
Rapper Kanye West arrived in Spencer, Oklahoma Tuesday to attend funeral services for his mother, Dr. Donda West. Singers John Legend and Anita Baker were scheduled to perform during the ceremony held Tuesday morning at True Vine Ministry Church, which can accommodate up to 2500 people. Jay-Z and Beyonce were among the mourners who came to pay respect. A white hearse carried Dr. West’s body to the church, and a horse-drawn carriage escorted her to the cemetery. During his concert Monday night in Brussels, Kanye played Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” in honor of his mother, and told the crowd that she would have wanted him to continue his Glow in the Dark tour through Europe. “If she was here, she would tell me to get on that stage and kill it, dawg” he told the audience, who responded with wild cheers. Meanwhile, “Access Hollywood” reported yesterday that West paid for the plastic surgery his mother received from Dr. Jan Adams, which took place one day before her death. But the rapper did not want her to undergo the procedures. He wanted his mom to go to a trainer instead, “Access Hollywood” reported.
Kanye West is set to resume his Glow in the Dark Tour on Thursday night in London.
DR. JAN ADAMS WALKS OUT ON LARRY KING
Dr. Jan Adams waited until his appearance on CNN’s “Larry King Live” last night to tell the host that he was backing out of his scheduled interview. After introducing the man who performed plastic surgery on Donda West one day before her death on Nov. 10, King said to him: “I understand you want to say something.” Adams proceeded to thank King for allowing him the opportunity to discuss the bad press that has followed him since announcing he had performed the tummy tuck and breast reduction on Kanye’s mom. “Basically, I had come here to talk about things in the press that aren’t accurate about me,” he told King. “But I have a tremendous amount of love and respect for the West family and they’ve asked me not to go on. And I’ve said from the very beginning, I don’t have a side in this. They are my side, and so I’m going to respect their wishes. I’m going to apologize to you because I think I’m taking up your airtime. But I will not be on the show and I will not discuss any of that. I’m going to honor their wishes. Okay?” “Meaning you won’t answer any questions about anything?” King asked. “None,” said Adams. “Well will you ever answer questions? I mean, where will this go?” Adams replied: “I will talk with [the family]. When they’re comfortable, then I’ll be comfortable. If they’re never comfortable, then I’ll never be comfortable. They are what’s important to me. I’ve said that from the start, and that’s what I’ll continue to honor.” With that, Adams began removing his earpiece. “But don’t you want to speak out?” asked King as the plastic surgeon rose to his feet. “No,” Adams said with a grin. “I do not.” King said: “But you came here to speak out.” Adams shook King’s hand and said: “That’s correct, but I’m going to honor their wishes.”
STEVE HARVEY’S CON JOB DIVORCE
The ex-wife of comedian Steve Harvey claims that she was conned into a quickie divorce engineered by the entertainer and his lawyer, who allegedly sought to keep private details about the star’s adultery, poor and neglectful parenting, and “physical and mental abuse” of his ex-spouse. In a lawsuit filed against her ex-lawyer, Mary Harvey claims that she was defrauded by the comedian and the couple’s longtime attorney, who represented both sides in their November 2005 divorce. Harvey alleges that she was unaware of her right to independent counsel and, as a result, was severely shortchanged when it came to alimony, division of community property, and child support. In her District Court complaint, filed yesterday in Harris County, Texas, Harvey claims that the couple’s attorney, Ricky Anderson, told her she could not legally get more than $1000 monthly in child support for the couple’s son. Harvey alleges that Anderson was actually looking out for Steve Harvey’s interests, and sought to protect his client’s “packaged, do-good, likeable, Christian-type image in the public eye.” Anderson and the comedian sought to “quickly and quietly dispose of the divorce” because there were “many things that Steve Harvey…did during the Harveys’ marriage that he did not want the public to know about,” Mary Harvey charges in her lawsuit, which was first reported by Courthouse News. Those “things,” the complaint alleges, included “Steve Harvey’s adultery, his abandonment of some of his children, his poor and neglectful parenting of the parties’ child, and physical and mental abuse of Plaintiff.” Harvey’s complaint charges Anderson with breach of contract, professional negligence, and conspiracy.
