CHARGES DROPPED AGAINST BRANDY

brandy-1207.jpg

As previously reported, the Los Angeles City Attorney’s office has decided not to charge Brandy with vehicular manslaughter for the Dec. 2006 freeway accident that killed a motorist. Responding to the news, her attorney, Blair Berk, released the following statement to TMZ.com: “We are extremely pleased that after a more thorough and extensive investigation by authorities, the Los Angeles City Attorney has determined that Brandy Norwood should not be charged with any crime whatsoever relating to the accident back in 2006.” She continued, “These past 12 months have posed an extraordinary hardship for Brandy and her family, who have been unfairly forced to live under a cloud of suspicion initially caused by the ill-advised and premature press release sent out by the California Highway Patrol accusing Brandy of wrongdoing before the police investigation was even finished. However, Brandy continues to be mindful that she was so fortunate to be uninjured in this accident and there was a life lost that should be remembered.”

Big League Productions, the company that books Broadway musicals for touring throughout the world, is launching a traveling revival of the Tony-winning revue “Ain’t Misbehavin” with headliners Ruben Studdard and Frenchie Davis, reports Playbill News.
According to the official Big League Web site, Richard Maltby, Jr. — who wrote and staged the original 1978 production of the Fats Waller revue — will direct the tour as well. The original Broadway production made a star out of its leading lady, the late Nell Carter, and featured such Fats Waller tunes as “Mean to Me,” “Honeysuckle Rose,” “Black and Blue” and the title tune. The musical won Tonys for Best Musical, Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Carter) and Best Direction of a Musical (Maltby, Jr.). The national tour is scheduled for 2008-09, although specific dates have yet to be announced. Since winning the “American Idol” crown in 2003, Studdard has recorded four albums: “Soulful,” “Flying Without Wings,” “I Need an Angel” and “The Return.” His fifth CD, according to a biography on the Big League Production website, is scheduled to arrive in 2008. Frenchie Davis, who was recently seen in Mahalia–A Gospel Musical, made her Broadway debut in Rent. She played Effie in a regional tour of Dreamgirls, and she has also performed in professional productions of Little Shop of Horrors and Jesus Christ Superstar in Germany.

JAMES BROWN’S KIDS CHALLENGE WILL

james_brown-necktie.jpg

The red tape that has snarled James Brown’s estate gets even thicker this week as five of the entertainer’s children are challenging the will, which leaves most of the late singer’s money to trusts set up to educate Brown’s grandchildren and needy kids. In the challenge filed in South Carolina’s Aiken County Probate Court, the kids claim that the will should be invalidated because Brown’s former advisers – Buddy Dallas, Alford Bradley and David Cannon – used undue influence to get him to create charitable trusts that the advisers would profit from. The children were largely left out of the financial portion of the will, but Atlanta attorney Louis Levenson said the children discovered earlier wills drafted by their father that cast doubt on whether he truly wanted to leave the bulk of his estate to charity. “There was sporadic indication that Mr. Brown intended to benefit some charities, but the circumstances surrounding the making of these documents have always been clouded in mystery,” Levenson said. Dallas denied the allegations and called attempts to void the will “an act of desperation.” “No one told James Brown what to do,” Dallas said, adding that if he were going to use his influence to benefit himself, “I would have just influenced him into giving me something.” The Brown children challenging the will are Deanna Brown Thomas, Venisha Brown, Daryl Brown, Yamma Brown Lumar and Larry Brown. A sixth child named in Brown’s will, Terry Brown, has hired a different attorney. Also, one grandchild whose tuition would be paid for by the trusts has accused his relatives of trying to break the charities to get the money.

APPRENTICE STAR LOOSING CONDO

The New York Post’s Page Six is reporting that Kwame Jackson, the runner-up on NBC’s first season of “The Apprentice,” is about to lose his triplex condo in Harlem. According to documents filed with the city, a lien has been placed on Jackson’s West 123rd Street apartment for nonpayment of common charges of more than $12,000, dating back to April 2006. “We’ve had a few payments in the past,” the building’s lawyer, Lisa Breier Urban told The Post’s Braden Keil, “but nothing has come in for the last eight months.” Jackson, one of People magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Kenan-Flagler Business School and a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard Business School.

R. KELLY ALLOWED TO CONTINUE TOUR

r-kelly.jpg

Singer R. Kelly is back on the road to complete dates on his Double Up tour after the judge in his child pornography trial decided not to revoke his bond last Friday.

Cook County Circuit Judge Vincent Gaughan had issued a bench warrant for Kelly’s arrest when he failed to show at a hearing last Wednesday and threatened to restrict Kelly to the state of Illinois. When the singer turned up in court Thursday and Friday with an apology and an explanation, he was allowed to return to the tour.

Gaughan did order Kelly to cancel a January 13th date in Hampton, Virginia, to ensure that the star will appear in Chicago for a January 14th hearing.

In addition, Gaughan set the official start date for Kelly’s trial as May 9th. The case has been pending for more than five years.

In related news, a woman who snapped pictures of Kelly with her cellphone during his Thursday court appearance was sentenced to five days in jail and her phone ordered destroyed.

Jean Johnson, 49, was in the Cook County courthouse to face probation violations when she snapped the pictures of the Grammy winning star. Cameras are not allowed in the courtrooms.

JAY-Z STEPS DOWN AS DEF JAM PRESIDENT

jay-z.jpg

Hip hop mogul Jay-Z has stepped down as the president and CEO of Def Jam Records after three years on the job. The rapper was in negotiations to renew his deal but his asking price may have been too high. The Associated Press reports that the rapper said, “It’s time for me to take on new challenges.”

Jay-Z still owes the label at least one more album under his current recording contract. The rapper was rumored to have been in talks with Sony Music.

During his tenure, Jay-Z helped to break several acts including Young Jeezy, Rick Ross, Rihanna, and Ne-Yo. He also helped to lure artists such as Nas, Jadakiss, and the Roots to the label.

Kanye West had tremendous success for Roc-A-Fella Records but Memphis Bleek, Beanie Sigel, and Freeway failed to catch on with fans.

Def Jam’s hardcore artists also saw a sales decline during Jay-Z’s tenure such as Method Man, Redman, and Ghostface Killah.

WILL SMITH SLAMS SCOTTISH PAPER FOR TWISTING HIS HITLER COMMENTS

will-smith-1207.jpg

Will Smith is slamming a Scottish paper, accusing one of its reporters for misinterpreting a comment he made about Adolf Hitler in a recent interview. According to the Associated Press, in a story published Saturday (December 22nd) in the Daily Record, Smith was quoted saying: “Even Hitler didn’t wake up going, ‘let me do the most evil thing I can do today.’ I think he woke up in the morning and using a twisted, backwards logic, he set out to do what he thought was ‘good.'”

The reporter set up the quote with the observation: “Remarkably, Will believes everyone is basically good.”

Smith called it “an awful and disgusting lie,” and says through his rep said he is “incensed and infuriated to have to respond to such a ludicrous misinterpretation. Adolf Hitler was a vile, heinous vicious killer responsible for one of the greatest acts of evil committed on his planet.”

Smith stars in the new film I am Legend.

BRANDY MAY BE IN THE CLEAR

brandy-1207.jpg

TMZ.com is reporting that the delay in deciding whether vehicular manslaughter charges should be filed against Brandy for her car accident last year is due to uncertainty over whether the singer was actually at fault. A CHP source tells the Web site that the woman who died in the accident struck the vehicle in front of her before Brandy made any contact. The law enforcement source says Awatef Aboudihaj, the woman who died, rear-ended the car in front of her — which was going 65 mph, and then slammed on the brakes. The sudden stop caused Brandy to hit the dead woman’s car, according to the source. TMZ also learned from L.A. County Coroner spokesperson Captain Ed Winter that toxicology reports show Aboudihaj had “slight traces” of marijuana in her system at the time of the crash. The L.A. City Attorney has until the end of the business day on Friday to decide whether to file criminal charges against Brandy — that’s when the one-year statute of limitations runs out.

SUSAN TAYLOR LEAVING ESSENCE MAGAZINE

susan_l_taylor00-med.jpg

Susan L. Taylor, the current editorial director of Essence magazine, will leave the publication next month to focus more attention on building her Essence Cares mentoring program, reports Richard Prince’s Journal-isms column. Those who attempt to contact Taylor by e-mail are told: “I am taking a break in South Africa and will have little access to email. When I come back to the States in mid-January, I will be leaving Essence to do what at this juncture in my life has become a larger work for me —building the National Cares Mentoring Movement, which I founded as Essence Cares and today is my deepest passion. “With mentoring I see light shining at the end of a long dark tunnel. There is a chance that if I devote more time and space in my life to learning and working with the growing number of community leaders throughout the nation who are organizing local Cares mentoring efforts, such a movement will succeed in doing what political will and public policy have not done: give our children in peril a chance to develop the extraordinary in themselves.” Taylor moved from the part-time position of free-lance beauty editor in 1970, to the full-time staff position of fashion and beauty editor, and eventually became editor-in-chief, in 1981. Six years ago, she was promoted to editorial director. Her Essence Cares mentoring program is a partnership with the National Urban League, 100 Black Men of America, the Links, Inc., and the YWCA.

R. KELLY MAKES COURT APPEARANCE

r-kelly-1107.jpg

R. Kelly showed up in a Chicago courtroom on Thursday (December 20th) morning, where he was admonished by the judge in his child pornography case for not appearing for proceedings the day before. Cook County Judge Vincent Gaughan said he was “very disappointed” by Kelly’s failure to show on Wednesday (December 19th), leading him to issue a bench warrant for his arrest. The judge put aside the warrant until 9 a.m. on Thursday, when Kelly did appear.

The singer’s attorneys noted that Kelly was late because his tour bus was stopped in Utah for eight hours by local police, who discovered that the log book didn’t document enough rest for the driver. Previous reports had attributed the bus delay to weather.

Kelly had been granted permission to launch his national concert tour in support of his latest CD Double Up.

A trial date is expected to be set in court proceedings today (December 21st), when the judge said he will also consider revoking Kelly’s bond, which allows him to travel outside of Illinois.

ALICIA KEYS IN TALKS FOR YET ANOTHER FILM ROLE

alicia-keyes.jpg

Alicia Keys is in negotiations for yet another film project. The singer is in talks to play the sister of Queen Latifah and Hotel Rwanda’s Sophie Okonedo in the coming-of-age story The Secret Life Of Bees. Production is slated to start next month in North Carolina.

Young actress Dakota Fanning is in talks to portray the central character, a 1960s teen growing up in the South, who leaves home with a friend, to be played by Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson, to find the truth about her past. She is taken in for a while by the sisters, who keep bees.

The film was adapted from the best-selling book by director Gina Prince Bythewood, who also created Love & Basketball and directed Disappearing Acts.

Keys is keeping quite busy. News broke this week that she has been tapped by producer Oprah Winfrey to portray Lena Horne in an upcoming film biography.

In addition, the singer’s hit “No One” remains Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 for a fifth week, and has been nominated for two Grammy Awards. The tune is from her hit album As I Am.

RUBEN STUDDARD DROPPED BY HIS RECORD LABEL

ruben-studdard.jpg

Former American Idol winner Ruben Studdard has been dropped by his label, J Records. The success of Studdard’s releases with J dropped successively; his 2003 album Soulful went platinum, 2004’s I Need an Angel reached gold status, but his 2006 release The Return only sold 235,000 copies.

Studdard is currently pursuing theater roles, a popular career route for former Idol contestants. In November he toured alongside Robin Givens in a play, called “Heaven I Need a Hug,” and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that he’s preparing to play jazz great Fats Waller in a national tour of “Ain’t Misbehavin’.”

TEAM LACHEY OF CINCINATTI WINS Week-long competition.

nick-lachey.jpg

The new NBC reality show, Clash Of The Choirs selected the Ohio group directed by Lachey last night in an upset over Patti Labelle. The show produced by the makers of Dancing With the Stars pits country star Blake Shelton, pop singer Nick Lachey, R&B legend Patti LaBelle, pop veteran Michael Bolton, and former Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland against each other as each attempts to put together a winning choir from their respective hometowns. The Children’s Hospital of Cincinatti will get a check for $250,000 for the Choir’s efforts.

‘THE GREAT DEBATERS’

The Great Debaters is a drama based on the true story of Melvin B. Tolson, a professor at Wiley College Texas. In 1935, he inspired students to form the school’s first debate team, which went on to challenge Harvard in the national championship. The film was directed by and stars Denzel Washington as the debate team coach who inspires his all African-American team to dream big.

MORGAN FREEMAN KICKS THE BUCKET LIST

et_morganfreeman_071219_slate.jpg

Oscar winner MORGAN FREEMAN co-stars with the legendary JACK NICHOLSON in ‘The Bucket List,’ and he tells ET, “There are lots of things I haven’t done that I want to do; people you haven’t worked with, places you want to see, things you want to accomplish — I seem to be constantly scratching things off my bucket list.”

‘The Bucket List’ finds the veteran stars as two terminally ill men who seek to complete all the things they’ve ever wanted to do before they, well, kick the bucket. Directed by ROB REINER, the movie hits theaters in New York, L.A. and Toronto on Christmas Day, then opens nationwide on January 11.

‘NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS’

Nicolas Cage reprises his role as artifact hunter and archaeologist extraordinaire Ben Gates in the new film, National Treasure: Book of Secrets. The movie, which opens today (Friday, December 21st), is the follow-up to the 2004 box-office hit National Treasure. In the latest outing, Gates learns of his own family’s implication in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln by John Wilkes Booth. Gates must then locate the 18 missing pages to Booth’s diary, not only to clear his family’s name, but to unearth and connect several secrets, buried within the book, that point to a massive, global conspiracy. The film co-stars Jon Voight, Harvey Keitel and Helen Mirren.

JORDIN SPARKS AT THE SUPER BOWL

jordinsparks_150.jpg

American Idol winner Jordin Sparks will sing the Nation Anthem at the Super Bowl XLII (52) in her home state of Arizona. The singer, who turns 18 on Saturday (December 22nd) was confirmed for the coveted honor during planned meetings last week in Phoenix. Sparks appointment is fitting considering that her father is NFL great Phillippi Sparks and that Fox, the carrier of American Idol, will be broadcasting the title game. Another member of the Idol family, Ryan Seacrest, will be conducting red carpet interviews for the first time ever as celebrities arrive at the game.

BOOTSY COLLINS TO SALUTE THE LATE JAMES BROWN AT CONCERT

james_brown-necktie.jpg

Singer and bassist William “Bootsy” Collins, also known as the Clown Prince Of Funk, is hosting a concert tomorrow (December 22nd) to salute his mentor, James Brown. The show will take place at the Madison Theater in Covington, Kentucky, not far from Cincinnati, Ohio. Proceeds from the show will go toward the rebuilding of Brown’s early recording home, Cincinnati-based King Records, and the eventual launch of a museum, according to Billboard.com.

Performers will include Public Enemy’s Chuck D, rapper Lil’ Boosie, guitarist Buckethead, bassist Freekbass, and Brown’s most recent band, The Soul Generals. Special appearances will be made by members of the JB’s, Brown’s original backing band, as well as his longtime MC Danny Ray.

Collins has personal memories of the late soul kingpin and his label, as he worked at King Records at 15 and began touring with Brown at 17. “We didn’t want a rock star hoopla kind of thing,” said Collins. “I want to keep the focus on Mr. Brown; I don’t want people to forget what he’s done. To me, he’s like the Martin Luther King Jr. of music.”

Brown died on Christmas Day in 2006. Collins reiterated his respect for Brown recently when asked what it was like to be on the road with Brown: “It was a great opportunity. It was a whole lot of fun. I mean, it was more fun than a kid could have in 50 Christmases, on, on one Christmas, if you know what I’m saying. And to see the Godfather Of Soul behind the scenes and not see him from the audience, just that — even if I couldn’t have got to play with him –just to see him operate, you know, the machine that he had from the inside out was… that alone was worth just being there.”

BATTLE OF THE CHOIRS SELECTS WINNER TONIGHT

patti-labelle.jpg

The new NBC reality show, Clash Of The Choirs selects a winner tonight. The show pits country star Blake Shelton, pop singer Nick Lachey, R&B legend Patti LaBelle, pop veteran Michael Bolton, and former Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland against each other as each attempts to put together a winning choir from their respective hometowns.

Michael Bolton said that the show isn’t so much about rivalry as it is about being demanding of their choirs: “I don’t think anybody, at least I haven’t heard anybody, any negative talk going on, as much as you know everybody involved better be confident, and they better expect that their choir’s gonna have to perform on a certain level. I know how Patti and I are when it comes to walking into a studio or getting in front of an audience — we’re prepared.”

Bolton says that working with Patti LaBelle raised the bar as far as how hard everyone would have to work: “Well, when I started looking over the song list, and thinking about who was doing what, I thought, and I actually said this to everybody, ‘Patti is gonna be demanding excellence from her choir. She’s not gonna go in there and say, “Oh yeah, I got a couple hours here and a couple hours there.’” It’s gonna have to be so strong for her to show up and do this. So that raised the bar to me, just because of my own personal experience and my respect for her.”

Patti LaBelle jokes about one TV commercial featuring her saying she was going to win: “I saw this piece on last night, you know, advertising the show, and it was a piece that I said, I said ‘I know I’m gonna win.’ Now, that’s not good to say that, suppose I don’t win I’m gonna look like a fool! (laughs) I don’t know, I know out of the five of us somebody has to win.”

Clash Of The Choirs airs live from New York City and wraps tonight.

THANKS A MILLION TO DENZEL

denzel-washington.jpg

Denzel Washington has donated $1 million to Wiley College for the resurrection of its historic debate team, the Associated Press reports.

In his new film “The Great Debaters,” Washington plays real life professor Melvin Tolson, who coached Wiley’s elite debate team to the national championships in 1935.

The squad eventually died out in the following decades, but Washington’s gift will help get the program back on its feet. He expressed a desire to see the team rebuilt during a visit to the town last week.

Meanwhile, the two-time Academy Award winner and recent Golden Globe nominee opens up about his red-hot career, his deeply held religious beliefs, his philosophy about today’s children, “The Great Debaters” and his commitment to making the world a better place on a new episode of “TV One on One” to air Dec. 23 at 8 p.m.

Washington tells host Cathy Hughes that “The Great Debaters” reinforces the fact that all young people need someone who will inspire and challenge them – something today’s kids don’t have.

“I don’t blame anything that children are doing now,” he says. “We’re the ones that dropped the ball. We’re the ones that said, ‘Oh, it’s about me…the Me Generation, and I’m going to go off and do what I want to do — what’s best for me.’ We have dropped the ball, and they are the result.”

This Denzel Washington episode of “TV One on One” repeats on Dec. 23 at 11 p.m., Monday, Dec. 24 at 8 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 25 at 1 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 27 at 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 28 at 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 29 at 6 a.m. and Sunday, Dec. 30 at 2 p.m.

TINA TURNER MAKES NEWS WITH MUSICAL

tina_turner.jpg

The New York Post is reporting that Tina Turner has written an autobiographical musical titled “Simply the Best,” which will follow her rise to fame, the abuse suffered under ex-husband Ike Turner and her belief that he is the reincarnation of the tyrannical Egyptian pharaoh Thutmose III.

As the Post puts it: “Simply the Best” portrays Ike Turner as a gun-wielding, cocaine-sniffing, wife-beating monster whose signature line is: “That b*tch will taste my wrath like it’s her own saliva!”

The musical is aiming for London production next year before heading to Broadway, the Post reports. It will feature music from Tina Turner’s back catalog to narrate her journey from Nutbush, Tenn. to superstardom. Among the songs in the show are “Nutbush City Limits,” “I Can’t Stand the Rain,” “Let’s Stay Together,” “Private Dancer” and “What’s Love Got To Do With It?”

The Post reports: “A top-secret workshop of the musical was staged a year ago in London. No auditions were held. Theater agents received discreet phone calls inviting their clients to take part in a ‘rehearsed reading of a new musical.’

“The actors got the script the day before the reading. When they arrived at a dingy rehearsal studio in southeast London, they were shocked to find Turner, in full-diva regalia, there to greet them.”

ALICIA TO PORTRAY LENA HORNE

alicia-keys-november.jpglena-horne.jpg

PageSix.com is reporting that Oprah Winfrey has taken control of the long-gestating Lena Horne biopic and has cast Alicia Keys in the title role. “We’re going to start filming next year, and we’ve got Alicia,” Oprah reportedly told the New York Post column during an interview for her film “The Great Debaters.” The announcement comes as a final blow for Janet Jackson, who for years has expressed interest in playing the legendary entertainer on screen, and was actually in serious consideration when the project was set up as a TV movie at ABC. But her dream role was all but snatched away in 2004, when Mrs. Horne herself famously asked Jackson to step away from the role following her Super Bowl “wardrobe malfunction.”

SUPERHEAD DENIED MURPHY DEAL SAYING THERE IS NO RECORD LABEL

superhead-1207.jpg

Video vixen Karrine “Superhead” Steffans has denied recent reports that she has been signed to a record label run by Eddie Murphy, telling MTV.com that her attention is currently focused on writing a third tell-all book. “I am not signed to any recording deal or to any other type of deal with Mr. Murphy,” the former video vixen said in a statement released by her publicist. “I am not, and have no interest in being, a musician of any kind,” the statement continued. “I am focused on my third book, upcoming magazine column, radio and reality shows. My performance on the King magazine mixtape [Freaky Flows Seductively Hosted by Karrine Steffans] was lighthearted and cynical. It was not a precursor to any future endeavors.” A publication overseas first reported of Steffans, the author of two books detailing her sexual encounters with celebrities, having signed with a record imprint headed by Murphy and due to release a debut album in March. The story was picked up online by U.S. media outlets and bloggers. “This is just another example of how these sub-journalistic bloggers create and spread false information daily,” her statement continued. “Luckily, this time it was not a hurtful rumor. I urge the general public and major news media to be skeptical of unwarranted information and take such reports with a grain of salt.” In addition to Steffans’ statement, Eddie Murphy’s camp is also speaking out. In regard to recent reports that Eddie Murphy has formed a record label, it should be known for the record that Mr. Murphy has not formed a record label of any sort, nor is he interested in doing so, according to Eddie Murphy’s people.

STEDMAN JEALOUS OF OBAMA??

stedman.jpgbarack-obama.jpg

The National Enquirer swears that Oprah and Steadman are in counseling with a “clergyman” to save their relationship because he’s jealous of her adoration of Sen. Barack Obama. The tabloid says: “Stedman admitted he felt ‘very jealous of her relationship with Barack Obama. It seemed to him as though she was always pushing him away, posing with other powerful men and ignoring him.'” The spy claimed Oprah protested Stedman’s perception, and the couple of 21 years bickered until the counselor calmed them down.

Steffans has denied the initial reports. In an email to SOHH.com, Steffans wrote, “I don’t sing or rap or anything.”

The author also denied reports that she’s been dating Sean Kingston. She said, “I heard that I was dating Sean Kingston, too. Nah. No deal.”

Steffans penned the best-selling tell-all Confessions of a Video Vixen.

The author-turned rapper released a mix tape earlier this year which featured a freestyle verse.

KELIS SEXTAPE MAY BE SURFACING SOON

kelis.jpg

R&B singer Kelis is known for being really sultry, and soon her fans may get to see just how sexy she is for themselves. According to 50 Cent, there’s a sextape featuring the R&B singer somewhere and he was approached about potentially purchasing the footage.

During the rapper’s G-Unit Radio satellite show, 50 Cent told DJ Whookid, “I told you somebody called me, trying to sell me a tape of Kelis. I don’t have issues with Nas to the point where I want to do that to him. I think he’s a sucker sometimes, like the decisions that he makes are sucker moves.”

50 Cent was a former protege of Nas’ until the two men fell out in 2003.

In related news, Kelis is currently between recording contracts as she and Jive Records decided to sever ties this fall.

WILL SMITH PROUD OF LEVEL OF CARE IN MAKING ‘I AM LEGEND’

will-smiths-i-am-legend.jpg

Will Smith’s new movie I Am Legend brought in more than $76 million in its first weekend of release, making it the actor’s seventh straight film to debut at Number One. In the film, Smith plays Robert Neville, possibly the last remaining man in the world after a manmade virus turns the population into mutated carnivorous beings. Neville spends the film searching for other survivors while at the same time trying to stay alive.

Smith told us the level of care the filmmakers took when making I Am Legend is what sets it apart from other movies in the genre: “You generally don’t see science fiction movies with this level of care. Right? It’s usually, it’s a science fiction movie, you put the stuff in there. It’s cool, you add some special effects and you move on. But just the level of care and concern that was taken to the character and to the idea and to really search for the reality of the situation.”

Industry experts had predicted a $40 million opening weekend for I Am Legend. Despite harsh weather in most of the country, the film’s weekend tally makes it the highest opening weekend for a December release in movie history.

THIS WEEKEND’S TOP TEN MOVIES

I Am Legend – $76.5 million.
Alvin and the Chipmunks – $45 million.
The Golden Compass – $9 million.
Enchanted – $6 million.
No Country for Old Men – $3 million.
The Perfect Holiday – $2.97 million.
Fred Claus – $2.3 million.
This Christmas – $2.3 million.
Atonement – $1.85 million.
August Rush – $1.8 million.

MICHAEL HAS TO COME CORRECT

michael-jackson1.jpg

A Los Angeles Supreme Court Judge issued Michael Jackson a court order on Wednesday (December 12th) giving him 25 days to turn over financial information to a law firm which had won a $256,000 judgment against him in July. Eonline.com reported that Jackson also had the option of paying the judgment in full rather than revealing his financial records to the firm of Ayscough & Marar, whom he employed during his 2005 child molestation trial to obtain court orders “to block information from being publicly released and delaying discovery in several civil cases.”

IKE TURNER’S WIDOW WANTS TINA TUNER TO FORGIVE HIM

ike-turner-1207.jpg

Ike Turner’s widow Jeanette Turner says that after all these years, Ike’s former wife Tina Turner should forgive him.

The New Musical Express reported that Jeanette Turner said that despite the years of physical abuse that Tina suffered at the hands of Ike, his death on December 12th at the age of 76 should lead to Tina making peace with him, explaining “I know that she was hurt. But there’s something called forgiveness and I know Ike really forgave himself, which is really hard to do… I’m not defending what he did. I’m not saying he didn’t do what he did when he was with Tina or me. But he was a human being. And being all of that, he’s still a childlike person — pure and a good person always willing to help people.”

Jeanette told Eurweb, “He was a human being and he helped Tina… he helped a lot of people.”

Tina Turner has declined to make a public statement on Ike’s death. A representative issued the following statement: “Tina hasn’t had any contact with Ike for more than 35 years. No further comment will be made.”

TMZ.com reported that Turner had finished eating breakfast on December 12th at his San Marcos, California home and laid down. He was unresponsive when bandmembers tried to awaken him. Paramedics appeared on the scene at around 11 am and tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate him with CPR.

Although no cause of death has been announced, Turner had reportedly been suffering from emphysema for years.

There will be a public viewing of Turner’s body on December 20th in Los Angeles at the Angelus Funeral Home. The next day a public funeral will be held at the Greater Bethany Community Church City of Refuge in Gardena, California. Turner’s friends Little Richard and Solomon Burke will speak at the service.

CLASH OF THE CHOIRS CONTINUES TONIGHT

patti-labelle.jpg

The new NBC reality show, Clash Of The Choirs, debuts (Monday, December 17th) at 8 p.m. ET.

She’s not gonna go in there and say, “Oh yeah, I got a couple hours here and a couple hours there.'” It’s gonna have to be so strong for her to show up and do this.

Clash Of The Choirs airs live from New York City for the next three nights, wrapping up on Thursday (December 20th).

al-sharpton.jpg

The Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting that Al Sharpton was caught on tape in 2003 offering to help a fund-raiser win a multimillion-dollar business deal in exchange for helping him raise $50,000 for his presidential campaign.

FBI agents tapping White’s phones in 2003 recorded more than 20 conversations between Sharpton and Philadelphia fund-raiser Ronald A. White, most of them related to fund-raising for the presidential campaign and an effort to secure a $40 million pension-fund deal in New York.

KIDNAPPING CHARGES NOT TRUE

karyn-mcconnell-hancock.jpg

A pregnant attorney who police said made up a story about being kidnapped was charged Friday with making false alarms.

Karyn McConnell Hancock, 35, a former city councilwoman, never was abducted last week outside a the city’s juvenile court building, police said.

Hancock’s husband has said she had a “meltdown” and that she was seeking treatment. The charge carries a maximum sentence of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. Hancock was reported missing Dec. 5 and was found three days later after she flagged down a motorist near Six Flags in Austell, Ga. Her car was found nearby.

She told authorities that a man with a gun abducted her in downtown Toledo and forced into the back of a van, police said.

Police said she recanted the story Monday after meeting with investigators for about eight hours.

CLINTON ADVISOR RESIGNS AFTER OBAMA REMARK

CONCORD, N.H. — A top campaign adviser to Hillary Rodham Clinton resigned Thursday, a day after suggesting Democrats should be wary of nominating Barack Obama because his teenage drug use could make it hard for him to win the presidency. Clinton herself apologized to Obama as they waited to fly to Iowa for a debate.
Bill Shaheen, a national co-chairman for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, resigned Thursday after saying a day earlier that Democrats should be cautious of voting for rival Barack Obama because of his admitted drug use.

EL DEBARGE TRIES TO CLEAR UP THE RUMORS

el-debarge.jpg

R&B singer El DeBarge is clean and he’s resurrecting his career by performing spot dates. The singer recently clarified a rumor that he was arrested on domestic violence charges. DeBarge told Allhiphop.com, “Here’s what happened. I was arrested in my own home. I had already been on probation for drug abuse. Your probation officer knows where you live. [laughs] So what happened was I didn’t show up, I didn’t report. I just started doing concerts and things. My schedule just got crazy, and I didn’t report so he violated me.”

The singer added, “So if you don’t report, that’s just like having a dirty urine test, feel me? I am on testing. I am clean. Domestic violence? I don’t know where they got that from. That has nothing to do with it; they came into my home and arrested me early. It was seven o’clock in the morning. They let me know what it was for and took me to jail. And I guess that’s part of being famous — you get rumors attached to that.”

DeBarge also addressed the long standing rumor that Janet Jackson and his brother James have a secret love child. He said, “Well, you know it has been in the media for a long time. It has been a whisper and a ‘hush, hush’ kind of thing. I wonder if there’s a baby. I’ve never seen this child. I’ve yet to see it. It’s something we don’t talk about whenever we see Janet. We don’t speak about it. My brother, Janet and James — that info is privy to them. We just, you know, they’ll let us know when they’re ready to talk about it. We just respect it. [laughs]”

The singer also shared that his family still makes out alright. He said, “We still do concerts. We still have royalties. My records are being sold to this day and people are sampling music all the time. But the thing is, we just needed to all get off those God forsaken drugs. Everybody’s clean now. My whole family is clean. My sister, Bunny is coming out with a book. She’s got a movie deal with HBO. She’s getting ready to do the DeBarge story, about all of us. We are all just clean right now and I know that we’ll stay clean ’cause we’re back!”

LONGORIA SAYS ITS NOT TRUE

eva-and-tony-parker.jpg

Eva Longoria is denying a model’s claim that her husband, basketball star Tony Parker, is cheating on her. Shortly after Alexandra Paressant told x17online.com that she and Parker had been having an affair since meeting at his wedding this summer, a rep for the Desperate Housewives actress fired off a statement refuting the allegations. Liza Anderson said, “These allegations are completely, 100% false and untrue. All high profile couples fall victim to these sorts of things in the course of their relationships. It appears that this is not the first time this woman has used an athlete to gain public notoriety.” Parker responded by saying, “I love my wife. She’s the best thing in my life and I have never been happier.” Paressant claims that after being introduced to Parker at his wedding by their mutual friend, soccer player Thierry Henry, they soon began exchanging sexually explicit text messages and phone calls. She claims they began sleeping together when Parker would go to Paris and that she recently visited him in San Antonio, where he showed her the house he is building with his wife.

IKE TURNER DEAD AT 76

ike-turner-1207.jpg

Legendary R&B pioneer Ike Turner died December 12th at his home in San Marcos, California, at age 76. The Associated Press reported that a cause of death had yet to be announced. In the last decades of his life, Turner was more notorious for abusing his former wife and musical partner Tina Turner than for his musical career.

Tina Turner’s press representative issued the following statement to TMZ.com: “Tina is aware that Ike passed away earlier today. She has not had any contact with him in 35 years. No further comment will be made.”

AL SHARPTON UNDER INVESTIGATION

al-sharpton.jpg

Federal authorities subpoenaed financial records and employees in an apparent probe of the Rev. Al Sharpton’s 2004 presidential bid, nonprofit civil rights group and for-profit businesses, newspapers reported Thursday. As many as 10 Sharpton associates were subpoenaed Wednesday to testify before a federal grand jury in Brooklyn on Dec. 26, his lawyer told the Daily News. “Here we go again,” Sharpton, whose various ventures have come under scrutiny before, told the New York Post. “Whatever it is, it’s part of the territory. I’m a public figure.” Sharpton’s associates were told to provide investigators with financial records from the campaign and roughly six Sharpton-related businesses, as well as personal financial documents of Sharpton and his wife, the newspaper said. The FBI and Internal Revenue Service are seeking the records, which go back to 2001, according to the Daily News. A Sharpton spokeswoman did not immediately return phone calls or e-mail messages from The Associated Press early Thursday. An FBI agent who answered the phone at the agency’s New York headquarters declined to comment, and an agency spokesman did not immediately return a telephone message. An IRS spokesman did not immediately return phone calls. “It was like a sting or a raid,” said Carl Redding, Sharpton’s chief of staff for eight years during the 1990s. “They converged on everybody.”

Redding said FBI agents awoke him at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday with a subpoena to testify and to bring records to the grand jury, but would not tell him the reason for the investigation. Several staffers from the National Action Network, a Sharpton-led civil rights organization, also got subpoenas to testify, said Sharpton lawyer Michael Hardy. Sharpton himself did not receive a subpoena, the Daily News said. Sharpton spokesman Charlie King said the minister and the National Action Network were cooperating with the probe. He said he had “zero idea, not a hint” what the authorities were looking for. “The irony of this is we’ve been working with a number of government agencies to make sure that we’re up to speed on all of our outstanding paperwork,” he said. Hardy was sanguine about the developments. “I can’t think of a time when the Rev. Sharpton wasn’t under investigation,” he said. Sharpton agreed in 2005 to repay the government $100,000, plus interest, for taxpayer money he received during his failed effort to win the Democratic presidential nomination the year before, though he denied wrongdoing.

The Federal Election Commission had determined that he spent more of his own money on the campaign than the qualifications for federal matching funds allow. In 1993, Sharpton pleaded guilty to not filing a state income tax return in 1986.

JERRY RICE HEADED FOR DIVORCE COURT

Looks like 49ers great Jerry Rice may be about to jump from TV’s “Dancing With the Stars” to “The Bachelor.”

BOW WOW COMES CLEAN ABOUT LAST WEEK’S VISIT TO THE HOSPITAL

bow-wow.jpg

Last week rapper Bow Wow canceled several shows and he was briefly hospitalized for what his label, Sony Music, referred to as “stress and exhaustion.” Later a statement was releasing blaming Bow Wow’s fainting on an appendix infection. This week Bow Wow came clean and shared what exactly transpired.

The rapper told MTV.com, “I got stitches in my finger. It ain’t nothing, man. Stress? Yeah, of course, that’s normal. But right now, no, I’m not (exhausted). I just went to the hospital for medical issues. I fainted, fell out. Hopefully everything will get right. I’m taking my medication, everything is gonna be cool. We’ll see if I have to have surgery as of right now, (but) I’m feeling fine. I’ll probably wind up getting further tested after the tour wraps up. I don’t want to get surgery right now if that’s not (necessary).”

The rapper continued, “The official medical reason is I lost a lot of blood in my hand. I hit something and cut my hand. It would not stop bleeding. I lost a lot of blood, went onstage, put out a lot of energy, came off, got light-headed. I fainted, went to the hospital, threw up and then they told me my white blood cells were higher than what they’re supposed to be. They were looking at my appendix. I’ve always had stomach issues. I’ve always had stomach problems. But like I said, we’re gonna see if it’s that serious that I have to take that surgery. If that’s what I gotta do, that’s what I gotta do. The appendix is a life- threatening thing.”

MARIAH IS ALL YOU WANT

mariah-carey.jpg

Digital sales of Mariah Carey’s 1994 holiday single “All I Want For Christmas Is You” have reportedly landed it at Number Eight on the sales charts this week. The track also did well last holiday season. The song first appeared on Carey’s holiday album Merry Christmas, which was re-issued in an expanded CD/DVD format in 2005.

RAY J STILL AT WORK

ray-j.jpg

R&B singer Ray J will release his next album, All I Feel, through a new deal between his Knockout Entertainment, Koch Records, and Shaquille O’Neal’s DEJA 34 entertainment company. Allhiphop.com reports that DJ Kay Slay will A&R the project which will feature guest appearances by Snoop Dogg, Lil’ Wayne, and The Game. Ray J said, “I feel great about bringing Knockout Entertainment to Koch. I enjoy making great music and I believe in working very hard. EARLY RELEASE OF JANET SINGLE

janet-jackson-2.jpg

A new Janet Jackson song, a dance track called “Feedback,” has been leaked at the gossip website perezhilton.com. Jackson has set an “early 2008” release date for her next album, which is still untitled. Also, Universal Music Japan has started a website that will reportedly sell a new Janet Jackson single for digital download starting this Saturday (December 15th). The new album is scheduled for release in Japan on January 20th.

WHERE’S FANTASIA?

fantasia-color-purple.jpg

Fantasia is currently starring in Oprah Winfrey’s production of the music The Color Purple on Broadway, but some audiences wouldn’t even know it. According to perezhilton.com, the American Idol champ has missed about 50 performances since starting the gig seven months ago. This is reportedly having an impact on the success of the show — when the star of a Broadway show is absent, attendees are usually allowed to either exchange the tickets for another day or get a refund. Producers say they’ve had to return tens of thousands of dollars because of her absences. Sources say Fantasia’s out a lot because “she’s simply not up to the grueling Broadway schedule.”

DOES WILL HAVE A LOCK ON NUMBER ONE?

will-smiths-i-am-legend.jpg

Will Smith’s latest movie I Am Legend opens Friday, December 14th, and movie insiders are already predicting the film will be a smash success at the box office. But while Americans flock to the theaters to see the post-apocalypse themed movie, Smith and his family have different Christmas holiday plans. Smith told us that his wife Jada Pinkett Smith is set on having their family spend the holiday anywhere there is snow: “We like to go to snow, and by ‘we’ I mean Jada, likes to go to snow. I’d much rather be in Jamaica. But Jada has wonderful childhood memories of snow so we try to find wherever there’s the most snow. And she actually spends weeks on line figuring out where the most snow is and that’s where we end up going.”

STRIKE CONTINUES AND AWARDS TOO

writers-strike.jpg

Although the writers strike is still going strong after talks collapsed last Friday (December 7th), it will not affect the upcoming Screen Actors Guild awards, because the union received a waiver from the Writers Guild of America on Tuesday (December 11th). According to Reuters, SAG will be permitted to hire a WGA writer for its 14th annual awards show, to be held at the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles on January 27th and simulcast on TNT and TBS at 8 p.m. ET.

AS REPORTED HERE FIRST, STEVE HARVEY ISN’T LAUGHING NOW

steve-and-mary-lee-harvey.jpg

One of black America’s funniest men is embroiled in a messy alimony scandal.

The ex-wife of Steve Harvey, the nationally syndicated radio personality also known as one of ‘The Original Kings of Comedy,’ is crying foul for being duped into signing away her rights to his hefty fortune in a shady divorce deal.

Mary Lee Harvey (pictured right with the comic during happier times) is claiming that she was conned into a quickie separation of marriage devised by the entertainer and his attorney, Ricky Anderson — who allegedly sought to keep private details about the comic’s adultery, poor and neglectful parenting, and “physical and mental abuse” of his ex-spouse.

According to documents made available at TheSmokingGun.com, the former Mrs. Harvey filed a lawsuit on Nov. 20 claiming that she was defrauded by the comedian and the couple’s longtime attorney, who represented both sides in the November 2005 proceedings.Talk about a raw deal.

The result was her being unaware of her rights to independent counsel and being severely shortchanged when it came to alimony, division of community property, and child support – which amounts to a paltry monthly payment of $1,000 for the couple’s son.

Meanwhile Harvey, who hosted the nationally syndicated variety show ‘Showtime at the Apollo’ and fronted other TV shows throughout the years, is living happily ever after with another woman, Majorie Bridges (pictured left in July during the 2007 Essence Music Festival).

The couple reportedly married during a family vacation to Hawaii.

Known to be highly outspoken about a number of subjects, the usually loud and proud member of the Omega Psi Phi black fraternity is surprisingly remaining mum about this dud of an alimony deal.

Elivra Guzman, a former radio station intern turned personal publicist for Harvey, didn’t immediately respond to queries seeking comment from him.

When probed for a response, the flak retorted, “I am very nice person and I show everyone respect … I do not understand why you continue to disrespect me and give me times lines.”

To add injury to insult, she added: “I will simply not work with you if you continue to display this type of attitude.”

Harvey, who is involved with a great and exciting community initiative with Walt Disney World Resorts (Disney Dreamers Academy), should be saying the same thing about her.

QUEEN SAYS IT AIN’T SO

queen-and-jeanette.jpg

Chicago radio personality Kendra G. of Power 92 says she got a direct answer from Queen Latifah regarding rumors that she planned to announce an engagement to her personal trainer/girlfriend. Latifah reportedly said: “Oh my goodness you guys actually believe that. You can’t believe everything you read…there will be no major announcement made. The only major announcement I have to make is “Merry Christmas.” The Chicago Sun-Times also asked Latifah about the rumored engagement as she worked the red carpet this past weekend. “When you’re famous these days, it’s just part of the deal — unfortunately,” she told the newspaper in denying the claims. “People will make up all sorts of things that are not true. There ain’t gonna be no wedding.” The artist made her comments while attending a premiere screening of her new film “The Perfect Holiday” at the Ice Theater in Chicago. Also walking the red carpet were Latifah’s co-stars Gabrielle Union, Morris Chestnut and Faizon Love. As previously reported, longstanding rumors have suggested that Latifah’s trainer, Jeanette Jenkins, has actually been her girlfriend for the past four years.

GLOVER SUPPORTS JOHN EDWARDS FOR PRESIDENT

danny-glover.jpg

Danny Glover is about to hit the big screen in the upcoming film Honeydripper, which opens December 28th. The movie is set in 1950’s Alabama, where Glover — who plays the owner of the Honeydripper juke joint — finds his business dropping off. He ends up hiring a young electric guitarist in a last ditch effort to draw crowds. Glover also happens to be one of the many celebrities who has voiced their support for various presidential hopefuls. The actor says he thinks it’s important to take part and thinks that Oprah Winfrey showing her support for Barack Obama is helpful: “I’ve come out for Senator John Edwards so I think it’s very appropriate. I endorsed Edwards in May of this year. So you have a black man who’s running for president and then you have one of the most powerful people in this nation wanting to come out for him and to give him more leverage. It has to be appropriate because on the one hand what is important is that people begin to listen to what people have to say.”

MORE FROM MARVIN GAYE

marvin-gaye.jpg

The late Marvin Gaye’s 1978 album Here, My Dear, which he wrote about the breakup of his marriage, is being reissued as a double-disc set with special bonus materials on January 15th. The expanded edition package includes remastered tracks from the original album on one disc, plus a new mix of “Ain’t It Funny (How Things Turn Around” by funkmaster Bootsy Collins. Also, Temptations co-founder Otis Williams says that pop stars today may know how to sing, but they lack the tools to enjoy a long and varied career as an entertainer.
