R. KELLY MAKES COURT APPEARANCE

r-kelly-1107.jpg

R. Kelly showed up in a Chicago courtroom on Thursday (December 20th) morning, where he was admonished by the judge in his child pornography case for not appearing for proceedings the day before. Cook County Judge Vincent Gaughan said he was “very disappointed” by Kelly’s failure to show on Wednesday (December 19th), leading him to issue a bench warrant for his arrest. The judge put aside the warrant until 9 a.m. on Thursday, when Kelly did appear.

The singer’s attorneys noted that Kelly was late because his tour bus was stopped in Utah for eight hours by local police, who discovered that the log book didn’t document enough rest for the driver. Previous reports had attributed the bus delay to weather.

Kelly had been granted permission to launch his national concert tour in support of his latest CD Double Up.

A trial date is expected to be set in court proceedings today (December 21st), when the judge said he will also consider revoking Kelly’s bond, which allows him to travel outside of Illinois.

ALICIA KEYS IN TALKS FOR YET ANOTHER FILM ROLE

alicia-keyes.jpg

Alicia Keys is in negotiations for yet another film project. The singer is in talks to play the sister of Queen Latifah and Hotel Rwanda’s Sophie Okonedo in the coming-of-age story The Secret Life Of Bees. Production is slated to start next month in North Carolina.

Young actress Dakota Fanning is in talks to portray the central character, a 1960s teen growing up in the South, who leaves home with a friend, to be played by Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson, to find the truth about her past. She is taken in for a while by the sisters, who keep bees.

The film was adapted from the best-selling book by director Gina Prince Bythewood, who also created Love & Basketball and directed Disappearing Acts.

Keys is keeping quite busy. News broke this week that she has been tapped by producer Oprah Winfrey to portray Lena Horne in an upcoming film biography.

In addition, the singer’s hit “No One” remains Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 for a fifth week, and has been nominated for two Grammy Awards. The tune is from her hit album As I Am.

RUBEN STUDDARD DROPPED BY HIS RECORD LABEL

Former American Idol winner Ruben Studdard has been dropped by his label, J Records. The success of Studdard’s releases with J dropped successively; his 2003 album Soulful went platinum, 2004’s I Need an Angel reached gold status, but his 2006 release The Return only sold 235,000 copies.

Studdard is currently pursuing theater roles, a popular career route for former Idol contestants. In November he toured alongside Robin Givens in a play, called “Heaven I Need a Hug,” and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that he’s preparing to play jazz great Fats Waller in a national tour of “Ain’t Misbehavin’.”

The new NBC reality show, Clash Of The Choirs selected the Ohio group directed by Lachey last night in an upset over Patti Labelle. The show produced by the makers of Dancing With the Stars pits country star Blake Shelton, pop singer Nick Lachey, R&B legend Patti LaBelle, pop veteran Michael Bolton, and former Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland against each other as each attempts to put together a winning choir from their respective hometowns. The Children’s Hospital of Cincinatti will get a check for $250,000 for the Choir’s efforts.

‘THE GREAT DEBATERS’

The Great Debaters is a drama based on the true story of Melvin B. Tolson, a professor at Wiley College Texas. In 1935, he inspired students to form the school’s first debate team, which went on to challenge Harvard in the national championship. The film was directed by and stars Denzel Washington as the debate team coach who inspires his all African-American team to dream big.

MORGAN FREEMAN KICKS THE BUCKET LIST

et_morganfreeman_071219_slate.jpg

Oscar winner MORGAN FREEMAN co-stars with the legendary JACK NICHOLSON in ‘The Bucket List,’ and he tells ET, “There are lots of things I haven’t done that I want to do; people you haven’t worked with, places you want to see, things you want to accomplish — I seem to be constantly scratching things off my bucket list.”

‘The Bucket List’ finds the veteran stars as two terminally ill men who seek to complete all the things they’ve ever wanted to do before they, well, kick the bucket. Directed by ROB REINER, the movie hits theaters in New York, L.A. and Toronto on Christmas Day, then opens nationwide on January 11.

‘NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS’

Nicolas Cage reprises his role as artifact hunter and archaeologist extraordinaire Ben Gates in the new film, National Treasure: Book of Secrets. The movie, which opens today (Friday, December 21st), is the follow-up to the 2004 box-office hit National Treasure. In the latest outing, Gates learns of his own family’s implication in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln by John Wilkes Booth. Gates must then locate the 18 missing pages to Booth’s diary, not only to clear his family’s name, but to unearth and connect several secrets, buried within the book, that point to a massive, global conspiracy. The film co-stars Jon Voight, Harvey Keitel and Helen Mirren.

JORDIN SPARKS AT THE SUPER BOWL

jordinsparks_150.jpg

American Idol winner Jordin Sparks will sing the Nation Anthem at the Super Bowl XLII (52) in her home state of Arizona. The singer, who turns 18 on Saturday (December 22nd) was confirmed for the coveted honor during planned meetings last week in Phoenix. Sparks appointment is fitting considering that her father is NFL great Phillippi Sparks and that Fox, the carrier of American Idol, will be broadcasting the title game. Another member of the Idol family, Ryan Seacrest, will be conducting red carpet interviews for the first time ever as celebrities arrive at the game.

BOOTSY COLLINS TO SALUTE THE LATE JAMES BROWN AT CONCERT

james_brown-necktie.jpg

Singer and bassist William “Bootsy” Collins, also known as the Clown Prince Of Funk, is hosting a concert tomorrow (December 22nd) to salute his mentor, James Brown. The show will take place at the Madison Theater in Covington, Kentucky, not far from Cincinnati, Ohio. Proceeds from the show will go toward the rebuilding of Brown’s early recording home, Cincinnati-based King Records, and the eventual launch of a museum, according to Billboard.com.

Performers will include Public Enemy’s Chuck D, rapper Lil’ Boosie, guitarist Buckethead, bassist Freekbass, and Brown’s most recent band, The Soul Generals. Special appearances will be made by members of the JB’s, Brown’s original backing band, as well as his longtime MC Danny Ray.

Collins has personal memories of the late soul kingpin and his label, as he worked at King Records at 15 and began touring with Brown at 17. “We didn’t want a rock star hoopla kind of thing,” said Collins. “I want to keep the focus on Mr. Brown; I don’t want people to forget what he’s done. To me, he’s like the Martin Luther King Jr. of music.”

Brown died on Christmas Day in 2006. Collins reiterated his respect for Brown recently when asked what it was like to be on the road with Brown: “It was a great opportunity. It was a whole lot of fun. I mean, it was more fun than a kid could have in 50 Christmases, on, on one Christmas, if you know what I’m saying. And to see the Godfather Of Soul behind the scenes and not see him from the audience, just that — even if I couldn’t have got to play with him –just to see him operate, you know, the machine that he had from the inside out was… that alone was worth just being there.”
