It’s official. Illinois Senator Barack Hussein Obama can now say he is the Democratic Party’s nominee to run against the Republican Party’s nominee John McCain in November. Obama’s claim to the nomination is also historic because it marks the first time that a black person has ever headed the ticket of a major American political party. “America, this is our moment,” the 46-year-old senator said in his first appearance as the Democratic nominee-in-waiting. “This is our time; our time to turn the page on the policies of the past.” Meanwhile, his Democratic opponent, New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton praised him in an appearance before her supporters, although she neither acknowledged his victory in their grueling march through the primaries nor did she offer any concessions. Instead, she said she was committed to a unified party, and said she would spend the next few days determining “how to move forward with the best interests of our country and our party guiding my way.”

The widow of Sean Levert has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Cuyahoga County officials claiming their delayed medical attention led to his collapse in jail and eventual death at the hospital. According to the Associated Press, Angela Lowe and Levert’s estate are seeking unspecified damages in their lawsuit, filed Tuesday in federal court in Cleveland. They accuse jail officials of showing disregard for his medical needs. The artist and son of O’Jays singer Eddie Levert died March 30th shortly after he was taken from the jail to a hospital. He had just started serving a 22-month sentence for failure to pay child support.

*”The View’s” Sherri Shepherd lost her mind yesterday morning after her girl crush, Janet Jackson, showed up in person to give her two tickets to her upcoming concert in support of new album “Discipline.” In a previous “View” airing, Shepherd had gone on and on about how she had once slept outside of Jackson’s concert venue to score good tickets. When co-host Whoopi Goldberg suddenly cued Jackson’s music Tuesday morning, the superstar herself – decked in white – walked onto the stage and straight to Sherri holding two tickets. Shepherd screamed and jumped around in shock before embracing Michael’s little sister. Eventually, she calmed down enough to tell Jackson: “I have every album; I have every poster; I have all of your program books. Aside from Michael, you are my second favorite, girl.”
