RICE SAYS LACK OF BLACK DIPLOMATS UNACCEPTABLE

Agence France-Presse is reporting that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Monday it was “unacceptable” that there were so few black people like herself in the US diplomatic corps.
“I want to see a Foreign Service that looks as if black Americans are part of this great country,” Rice told a gathering of black colleges and universities in Washington. “I have lamented that I can go into a meeting at the Department of State,” said Rice, the second black person to become secretary of state after her predecessor Colin Powell. “And, as a matter of fact, I can go into a whole day of meetings at the Department of State and actually rarely see somebody who looks like me, and that’s just not acceptable,” she added. Rice said she has been working with black Congressman Charles Rangel to target students at schools with large numbers of blacks, according to a State Department transcript of her speech.

EXCELSIOR FOUNDER GETS THE NOD

Bobby Joe Champion

Tuesday’s Minneapolis primaries provided few surprises, although Rep. Willie Dominguez, a first-term DFLer from north Minneapolis, lost to lawyer Bobby Joe Champion, who had won the DFL endorsement earlier this year. “I ran solely on issues,” said Champion, who said he focused on home foreclosures, public safety, education and health issues. “I refuse to go negative.”

SECOND CHILD ON THE WAY

A source close to R&B star Usher has confirmed that he and his wife, Tameka Foster, are expecting another baby. Their second child together will be a little sister or brother to 10-month-old son Usher Raymond V, who was born to the couple three months after their wedding in August 2007. There’s no word yet on when the new baby is due. The news follows reports of Foster dressed in a belly-disguising outfit during Usher’s Sept. 4 NFL kick-off concert in New York. The dress was “very deceiving,” a source tells People.com. “You couldn’t tell she was pregnant when she was sitting down.”

PIG SLIME HITS CAMPAIGN

What’s the difference between the presidential campaign before and after the national political conventions? Lipstick. My source tells me the pig was not offended by the remark and is not available for comments. The colorful cosmetic has become a political buzzword, thanks to Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin’s joke in her acceptance speech that lipstick is the only thing that separates a hockey mom like her from a pit bull. Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama told an audience Tuesday that GOP presidential nominee John McCain says he’ll change Washington, but he’s just like President Bush. “You can put lipstick on a pig,” Obama said to an outbreak of laughter, shouts and raucous applause from his audience, clearly drawing a connection to Palin’s joke even if it’s not what Obama meant. “It’s still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It’s still going to stink after eight years.”
John McCain’s campaign called the comments “offensive and disgraceful” and said Obama owes Palin an apology. Obama’s campaign said he wasn’t referring to Palin and said the GOP camp was engaging in a “pathetic attempt to play the gender card.” Obama’s camp also noted that McCain once used the same phrase to describe Hillary Rodham Clinton’s health care plan.
