Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer Hudson

The body of a young boy was discovered by police following a search for Jennifer Hudson’s 7-year-old nephew, who has been missing since Hudson’s mother and brother were found shot to death in their home on Friday. Police did not immediately release the boy’s identity but local media reports said a vehicle in which the body was found belonged to Hudson’s slain brother, Jason, 29, reports the Associated Press. Police had issued an alert on Friday saying the boy may have been abducted in that vehicle. The boy, Julian King, has been missing since Hudson’s mother, Darnell Donerson, 57, and Jason Hudson were found slain in Donerson’s South Side Chicago home. Police believe the killings appeared to be part of a domestic disturbance.
Police have taken 27-year-old William Balfour into custody as a suspect in the double homicide investigation. Balfour had a relationship with Hudson’s sister Julia but is not the father of Julian King.

Terrance Howard

Terrance Howard

When it rains, it pours for Terrence Howard. One week after learning through the trades that his “Iron Man 2” role was given to Don Cheadle, the Oscar-nominated actor has been sued for alleged assault. Composer Andrew “Tex” Allen claims he was beaten up by Howard last winter while working together in Broadway’s Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, reports the New York Post.
The jazz pianist and brother of “Tin Roof” director, Debbie Allen, seeks $5 million in damages, according to the lawsuit. He claims Howard stepped to him on Jan. 24 at about 2:30 p.m. as he was sitting at the piano inside of Walter Kerr Theatre. He said Howard punched him repeatedly in the face and head. The lawsuit does not state the reason for the alleged confrontation.

Barack Obama

Barack Obama

The hometown newspaper of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin says thanks, but no thanks by announcing its endorsement of her rival, Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, for president. “Gov. Palin’s nomination clearly alters the landscape for Alaskans as we survey this race for the presidency — but it does not overwhelm all other judgment,” the paper stated Saturday. “The election, after all is said and done, is not about Sarah Palin, and our sober view is that her running mate, Sen. John McCain, is the wrong choice for president at this critical time for our nation.” “Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee, brings far more promise to the office,” the paper continues. “In a time of grave economic crisis, he displays thoughtful analysis, enlists wise counsel and operates with a cool, steady hand. The same cannot be said of Sen. McCain.”

Historically, voter participation has been lower among people with disabilities than in the general population. More than 30 million Americans with disabilities are of voting age. Yet, a National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation study shows that people with disabilities are 20 percentage points less likely than non-disabled people to vote. A major contributing factor is inaccessibility. According to the Federal Election Commission, more than 20,000 polling places across the nation fail to meet the minimal requirements of accessibility. Citizens with disabilities have a constitutionally protected right to vote, just like the rest of us. Additionally, these Federal laws protect the rights of people with disabilities:
Voting Rights Act of 1965. In addition to providing protections for minority rights, this law allows those with various disabilities to receive assistance “by a person of the voter’s choice,” as long as that person is not the disabled voter’s boss or union agent. Voting Accessibility for Elderly and Handicapped Act of 1984. This law mandates handicapped and elderly access to polling places and provides for the creation of permanent disabled registration sites.
Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. This law prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities and requires accommodations be made for disabled persons at places of employment
and public service. National VoterRegistration Act of 1993. This law requires states with disabled service agencies to act as disabled voter registration agencies as well.
Compliance with these laws is not optional, it is required. If you have trouble exercising your right to vote, call 866-OUR-VOTE. Legal action is also an option.
