ABC/CNN WILL NOT AIR OBAMA SPECIAL

Sen. Barack Obama

Sen. Barack Obama

At 8 p.m., EDT tonight, ABC and the CW will be the lone broadcast networks not running the half-hour ad from Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. CNN also has opted out, deciding to air its normal programming at that time. Instead, ABC will air its struggling series “Pushing Daisies,” while the CW will counter program with its usual show in the time period, “America’s Next Top Model.” The Obama campaign bought a half-hour of airtime on NBC, Fox and CBS on October 9, spending about $1 million per network, according to the Hollywood Reporter. But, ABC was absent from the list, and the network refused to explain its programming intentions. One source said ABC offered the airtime, but the Obama campaign, for whatever reason, declined to buy an ad. Cable networks airing Obam’s 30-minute special on the economy include BET, TV One, MSNBC and Spanish-language network Univision.
Meanwhile, Obama’s half-hour program had yet to be delivered to networks as of last night. Sources said the ad is almost certainly taped, rather than a live telecast, and can be submitted as late as this morning. I’ve heard that Obama will do a live segment at the end from a campaign rally.

POSSIBLE MOTIVES IN HUDSON CASE

Julia Hudson

Julia Hudson

The Chicago Tribune quotes a police source who said the motive in the killings of Jennifer Hudson’s mother, brother and nephew could be related to ongoing disputes between the suspect and his estranged wife, Julia Hudson, and her family. One of the arguments centered on missed car payments, sources said. William Balfour, 27, remains the focus of the triple-homicide investigation. Hudson’s mother and brother had kicked him out of their Englewood home in the past, sources said. Julia Hudson also told police that Balfour had threatened the family. A source said Balfour told Julia Hudson he would kill her if he found out she had a boyfriend, despite the fact that he had other girlfriends. Officers said Balfour was cooperative during questioning on Friday night, but he stopped talking when police suggested he take a lie detector test.

LL NOT COOL WITH JANET TOUR

LL Cool J

LL Cool J

Just as Janet Jackson’s traveling Rock Witchu show was getting back on its feet following postponed dates, opening act LL Cool J announced he has quit the tour due to unnamed “scheduling conflicts.” Reps for LL made the announcement late Monday, reports the Associated Press. His exit comes after Jackson, 42, was forced to cancel a string of earlier concerts because of a bout of migraine-associated vertigo. She recently resumed while being treated for the illness, which is characterized by dizziness, imbalance and other symptoms. No replacment has been named.

COMMON RELEASES NEW CD

Common

Common

Five months after Common’s new album “Universal Mind Control” was scheduled to arrive in stores, Geffen will finally release the disc on Dec. 9, Billboard reported Tuesday. Two songs, “Announcement” and “Universal Mind Control” both of which feature Pharrell Williams, have already been released. The album also includes two fresh songs, “Gladiator” and “Inhale.” Among other changes to the album since its original release date, “Punch Drunk Love” now features Kanye West rapping the catchy chorus “Am I crazy, or was you giving me the eye?” Also, “Sex 4 Sugar,” which Common previously described as a conversation with a dancer, now has faster drums. “Everywhere,” which was formerly called “Runaway” and set to feature Santogold, now sports a dreamy layered chorus, sans Santogold, over a guitar riff similar to Pat Benatar’s “Love Is a Battlefield.”

LABELLE IS BACK!!

Labelle

Labelle

LaBelle, the female trio that offered up funk/soul/pop music that laced the airwaves in the ‘60s and ‘70s has returned with a new album called “Back to Now.” The group’s sound, melding the famed R&B/gospel poeticism of Patti LaBelle, rock antics of Nona Hendryx, and the soul sensibilities of Sarah Dash, is just as we left it 30 years ago, but reignited and retrofitted for the now. The dynamic vocalists’ powerful songs and harmonies mirror the energized multi-genre sound they brought to music three decades ago, but similarly, their lyrics echo the past and are quite relevant today. “The music that we did then was political, and now – it wasn’t intentional – but we have four songs that are very political,” group member Patti LaBelle described. “We’re almost at the place we were years ago. When you hear some of the song, you’ll thing that we wrote them purposely to go along with what is happening now. So it’s back and it’s now. It’s very timely.” For more on LaBelle and their triumphant return, check out www.labelleisback.com.
