Lauri Lyons

Lauri Lyons

LAURI LYONS just finished a multimedia piece which is gaining in natuonal attention. Lauri is a photojournalist and art photographer who shoots and exhibits globally (she just returned from a long assignment in Salvador, Brazil). She is the first black female photographer to be signed by Getty Images, and the subject of a biopic that’s a running favorite on CurrentTV.

Her most recent monograph, Flag International (2008), is one piece of a multi media documentary project that incorporates photography, video, audio and handwritten text. As a series of portraits of people from eight countries posing with the American flag, the project investigates how the international community views the United States in the 21st Century–a timely project given our historic recent election year. More information on Lauri’s work can be found here:

Here is the Flag International multimedia piece:

President-Elect Barack Obama

President-Elect Barack Obama

President-elect Barack Obama’s decision to keep a distance from his state’s governor, who was arrested on corruption charges on Tuesday, should enable him to escape becoming tainted by the scandal, analysts said. Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich stands accused of trying to sell the president-elect’s vacant U.S. Senate seat for financial and other personal benefits for himself and his wife, among other charges. “Obama is not related to the corruption pattern in Chicago,” said political scientist Dick Simpson of the University of Illinois in Chicago. “He has not been pressing for any person to replace him in his Senate seat.” U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, announcing the charges, also said Obama was in no way implicated. Obama told reporters he was “saddened and sobered.” “I had no contact with the governor or his office and so I was not aware of what was happening. As I said, it is a sad day for Illinois. Beyond that I don’t think it’s appropriate to comment,” he said. Still, Republicans tried to make political hay from the scandal. The Republican National Committee issued a statement saying Obama had advised and supported Blagojevich’s 2006 re-election, four years after he became the first Democratic governor of Illinois in nearly 30 years. “Given the President-elect’s history of supporting and advising Gov. Blagojevich, he has a responsibility to speak out and fully address the issue,” said RNC chairman Mike Duncan.

Visanthe Shiancoe

Visanthe Shiancoe

A Minnesota Vikings tight end is now best known for his front end after his privates were exposed Sunday on national television, and subsequently broadcast all over the Internet. Fox televised a clip of Vikings owner Zygi Wilf’s postgame locker-room speech after Sunday’s victory at Detroit, and Visanthe Shiancoe was inadvertently shown naked in the background. He was wearing a towel around his waist, but it briefly dropped to the side, exposing his genitals. “It was an obvious oversight on our part, and we apologize,” said Dan Bell, the vice president of communications for Fox. The NFL, however, does not think this incident is a reason to change any policies toward having cameramen in team locker rooms. Shiancoe’s agent, Tony Agnone, told the St. Paul Pioneer Press that his client was embarrassed and hopes fans understand it wasn’t intentional.

The New York Post is reporting that Fantasia Barrino is in a bad way financially. She’s accused of defaulting on a $58,000 loan to pay back taxes that she reportedly owed the IRS, and one of her homes in North Carolina is heading to the auction block. The Broadway star’s $1.3 million 6-bedroom, 6,232-square-foot mansion has been foreclosed on and will be auctioned on Jan. 12 unless she can come up with the payments, the Post reports. Records show she took a $1-million mortgage on the property in Charlotte from the Bank of America. But Barrino never answered the complaint against her and a judge ruled for the plaintiff by default. The Post is quoting someone claiming to be Barrino’s relative who said the whole thing is just a misunderstanding and her former lawyer is responsible for the mess because he never showed up in court to challenge the judgment against her. News of the home auction was revealed during a lawsuit against Fantasia from Broward Energy Management, who claims she has yet to repay the $58,000 loan given to her to pay back taxes, according to the company’s lawyer Laurence Goldman. According to the Post, Barrino’s home in jeopardy “is located in one of Charlotte’s ritziest neighborhoods on a golf course. The two-story stucco home boasts a large arched wooden front door and is decorated throughout with exotic art. A duel sweeping staircase greets visitors in its front hall, while tropical fish frolic in a massive fish tank upstairs that is visible from the front hall. A large, glass dining room table is adorned with what appears to be a statue of a cougar.”
