Oprah for Senator

Oprah for Senator

One thing’s for sure, that Blago guy from Illinois is one “different” kind of Governor. How so? Well, Rod Blagojevich, whose impeachment trial for trying to sell the U.S. Senate seat formerly held by President Barack Obama, considered offering it to talk show star Oprah Winfrey, reports Reuters. Monday on ABC’s “Good Morning America” Blagojevich said that a friend of his had suggested asking Winfrey to fill Obama’s seat. “She seemed to be someone who had helped Barack Obama in a significant way become president,” Blagojevich said. “She was obviously someone with a much broader bully pulpit than other senators.” But he said he decided that the talk show queen, one of the richest women in America, was unlikely to accept the offer. “She probably wouldn’t take it, and then … if you offered it to her, how would you do it in a way it didn’t look like it was some gimmick and embarrass her?” Blagojevich is doing the interview circuit and said he will not attend Monday’s impeachment trial in the state Senate which could remove him from office.

President Obama

President Obama

President Barack Hussein Obama is already showing folks that he’s no joke. In particular, he’s chosen to take on head Republican/conservative bully Rush Limbaugh. According to an account in the New York Post, on Friday Obama told Republican leaders, “You can’t just listen to Rush Limbaugh and get things done.”
Here’s Limbaugh’s response via Byron York of the National Review:

“There are two things going on here. One prong of the Great Unifier’s plan is to isolate elected Republicans from their voters and supporters by making the argument about me and not about his plan. He is hoping that these Republicans will also publicly denounce me and thus marginalize me. And who knows? Are ideological and philosophical ties enough to keep the GOP loyal to their voters? Meanwhile, the effort to foist all blame for this mess on the private sector continues unabated when most of the blame for this current debacle can be laid at the feet of the Congress and a couple of former presidents. And there is a strategic reason for this.”

First there were rumors that Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon were stuck along with hundreds of Purple Ticket holders in the now infamous 3rd Street Tunnel, unable to get to their assigned seats on the National Mall for the inauguration. Over the weekend, however, Page Six reported that not only were the Cannons seated in the VIP section on Tuesday, but she was apparently “furious” that organizers didn’t put her on the actual stage alongside Aretha Franklin. A source tells Page Six, “Mariah was in the VIP area, where every celebrity, like Jon Bon Jovi, Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys and Bruce Springsteen, was seated. But somehow she thought she’d be up with the Obama family. When she realized she wasn’t, she bailed.” Both Nick and Mariah performed later that evening at The Neighborhood Ball.

Tyler Perry

Tyler Perry

Six construction firms have filed liens against Tyler Perry’s house and new movie studio, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Court papers show that the entertainment mogul’s unpaid bills from the two properties total slightly less than $200,000, according to the newspaper. The contractors say Perry refused to pay their final bills either for no apparent reason or because their work met with his disapproval. They claim he ordered work redone on impulse, deciding he wouldn’t like the stones purchased for an outdoor fountain, for instance, or deeming newly planted trees too short.

“He wanted to do it his way,” said Brooks Hilton, a landscaping contractor who said Perry owes him $17,635. “He wouldn’t take any advice. I guess in Hollywood it works that way, but not in real life.”

Perry claims to have withheld payment only for shoddy work or for undocumented charges, and then only for a handful of the dozens of construction companies he hired. Even those, he said, still got paid hundreds of thousands of dollars each before he dismissed them.

He sees the contractors’ complaints as a form of extortion and as part of the burden of celebrity.

“There’s a Tyler Perry tax that’s put on things,” Perry said during one of two interviews with the newspaper last week. “I’ve seen the worst of what people can be, the worst of what family members can be. I pride myself on taking care of my business. I pride myself on being able to pay the bills.

“I’m not sympathetic to anybody who’s trying to rip me off. Just because I’m a Christian, just because I’m a nice guy, it doesn’t mean I’m a wimp.”
