PRESIDENT TO MEET WITH CROWLEY AND GATES THIS WEEK

Crowley, Obama, Gates

Crowley, Obama, Gates

President Obama will meet this week with Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Cambridge, Massachusetts, police officer James Crowley, who arrested Gates for disorderly conduct, the White House said Monday.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs did not announce the date or time the three men will convene at the White House, reports CNN.

Last week, Obama said that he called Crowley, and “there was a discussion about he and I and Professor Gates having a beer here in the White House.” Gibbs said: “I think it was Sergeant Crowley’s suggestion about the beer, and I think the president thought it was a good idea.”

Obama said he hoped the incident in Cambridge — which quickly spiraled into a national, racially charged controversy — “ends up being what’s called a teachable moment” for the country. The president acknowledged that he had contributed to “ratcheting it up” by declaring that the police department had “acted stupidly” even though he didn’t know all the facts of the case and is a personal friend of Gates.

Cambridge police had called on Obama to apologize for the remark. Obama did not apologize, but in the phone call with Crowley he said his choice of words was “unfortunate.”

WAS MJ DEAD WHEN PARAMEDICS ARRIVED?

Conrad Murray

Conrad Murray

TMZ.com is citing law enforcement sources who say that Michael Jackson was already dead when paramedics arrived at his home following a 911 call, but that his personal physician Conrad Murray insisted that he be taken to the hospital anyway.

Citing multiple sources, the website says paramedics wanted to pronounce the King of Pop dead at the scene, but Dr. Murray – as a higher medical authority than the EMTs – had the power to overrule them.

Paramedics reportedly arrived to find Jackson with an IV in his arm, an IV stand nearby along with an empty IV bag and oxygen tank.

TMZ says paramedics who arrived on scene say Dr. Murray’s conduct was “strange” — he was “hard to deal with” and was “getting in the way” of emergency responders.

Also, paramedics didn’t realize for nearly 10 minutes the victim was Michael Jackson. As one emergency worker put it: “It just looked like a frail, old, sickly man.”

*Meanwhile, the AP is reporting that Dr. Murray administered the powerful anesthetic to help the singer sleep, and authorities believe the drug killed Jackson, according to a law enforcement official.

The official said Jackson regularly received propofol to sleep, relying on the drug like an alarm clock. A doctor would administer it when he went to sleep, then stop the intravenous drip when he wanted to wake up. On June 25, the day Jackson died, Dr. Conrad Murray gave him the drug through an IV sometime after midnight, the official said.

Though toxicology reports are pending, investigators are working under the theory propofol caused Jackson’s heart to stop, the official said. Jackson is believed to have been using the drug for about two years and investigators are trying to determine how many other doctors administered it, the official said.

LaTOYA’S LADY LOVE IS ON THE WAY

LeToya

LeToya

LeToya. A single name ringing a whole lot of bells. Though one month remains before her album hits stores, LeToya Luckett has already piled up a year’s worth of accomplishments.

The video for the Top 10 national Urban radio hit ‘Not Anymore’ continues its steady climb up BET’s 106 & Park countdown, perched at No 3 as of recent weeks. She co-hosted this popular video show yesterday.

At a moment of emotional gravity for music fans everywhere, LeToya took her place twice, first, as a performer; then, as a presenter, at the recent 2009 BET Awards, which by coincidence was the first celebrity gathering following the passing of Michael Jackson and unexpectedly became a public memorial.

LeToya appeared on the awards’ pre-show, singing the sweeping ‘Not Anymore,’ the first single off forthcoming album ‘Lady Love’, due out August 25, 2009. She presented an award during the primetime portion, which was viewed on 10% of all televisions nationally that night.

Meanwhile, driven by the single and video, LeToya’s MySpace numbers astound: her page has been visited over four million times, and ‘Not Anymore’ has registered a whopping 7.6 million plays.

The smash success ‘Not Anymore,’ written and co-produced by Ne-Yo, paves the way perfectly for second single ‘She Ain’t Got…’ The thrashing, throbbing anthem, written by Chris Brown, is a hit in more ways than one.

LeToya is teaming up with Major League Baseball in rolling out ‘She Ain’t Got…’; check MLB.com for a LeToya interview and music video tie-in. Or keep your ears open the next time you attend a baseball game, as song snippets will be resonating throughout stadiums across the country. Better still, watch for the song’s music video, featuring current Los Angeles Dodger stars Matt Kemp and Orlando Hudson, as well as Hall of Fame player Dave Winfield.

MRS. McNAIR BREAKS HER SILENCE

Mechelle McNair

Mechelle McNair

The widow of former NFL quarterback Steve McNair has delivered her first public comments since his death earlier this month, reports People.com.

Thanking those who have offered words of support, Mechelle McNair said in a statement released Friday afternoon, “Mere words are inadequate to express the gratitude that my family holds for all of the countless expressions of sympathy for the loss of my husband, Steve McNair. Your prayers, kind deeds and outpouring of support throughout this difficult time have been of tremendous comfort to us.”

On behalf of herself and her family, she added, “May you be richly blessed for all that you have done and continued to do. You are appreciated beyond measure.”

The former Tennessee Titans and Baltimore Ravens quarterback, 36, was killed on July 4 by his mistress Sahel Kazemi, 20, who faced mounting debts that included payments on a Cadillac Escalade he’d helped her to buy, and who suspected him of seeing yet another woman who was not his wife, Nashville police said.

PLUGGING THE MJ LEAKS

Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson

Los Angeles County sheriff’s investigators are trying to figure out whether employees at the coroner’s office illegally leaked or sold private information related to the investigation of Michael Jackson’s death, reports the Associated Press.
Investigators spoke to the coroner’s office Friday and will handle the inquiry with the district attorney’s office, according to sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore. The department is conducting the probe at the request of county supervisors, he said.

“It’s an inquiry, not an investigation, and it is very preliminary,” Whitmore said. “We’ve just made a couple of calls. We want to find out if we need to proceed, if this requires an investigation.”

The coroner’s office said Wednesday Jackson’s death certificate was improperly viewed by at least a half-dozen employees who had no role in investigating the cause of his death. Improper views of the certificate, which is stored in a state-supervised computer system, is a violation of internal rules, not any laws, Harvey said.

Within two weeks of the entertainer’s June 25 death, the certificate had been viewed more than 300 times, according to Harvey. The electronic death registration system can be accessed by anyone with a state-issued password, including employees at coroner’s offices, funeral homes, hospitals and county and state registrar’s offices.

COSBY WEIGHS IN ON

Bill Cosby

Bill Cosby

On a Boston radio program Thursday morning, Bill Cosby suggested that President Obama spoke too soon on the controversial arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, reports the Christian Science Monitor.

“I’ve heard about five different reports [on the details of the arrest],” Cosby said on Boston’s WZLX. “If I’m the president of the United States, I don’t care how much pressure people want to put on it about race, I’m keeping my mouth shut.”

“I was shocked to hear the president making this kind of statement,” Cosby said referring to the president’s remarks during Wednesday night’s press conference.

The comedian appeared to have dialed his comments back a bit in a later interview on Boston’s FOX 25 television station. Cosby cautioned those from coming up with their own conclusions, but gave the president some leeway.

“People who have not been there, people who don’t know are beginning to have their own personal feelings, but they weren’t there,” Cosby said.

“Does this include the president?” asked the FOX25 reporter.

“It includes everybody,” Cosby said. “[But] I would have to take into consideration that he lived in Cambridge for some time so he may know more than he’s saying about situations of that sort,” Cosby said.

TYLER PERRY TREATS KIDS

Tyler Perry

Thanks to Tyler Perry, it’s indeed a small world after all for the minority kids who were tossed out of a suburban Philadelphia pool on claims of racism.

The filmmaker is footing the bill for 65 African American and Hispanic children from the Creative Steps day camp in Philly to a day at Walt Disney World, according to reports.

The kids reportedly cheered Monday when they learned about the actor’s gift. reative Steps director Alethea Wright says she’s thrilled about the offer, especially because Perry “comes from humble beginnings” like the children in her camp. The Valley Club in Huntingdon Valley has maintained that refunding the camp’s swimming fee was not about race but rather a safety issue, in part because many children couldn’t swim. Perry, best known for his signature character Madea, is currently directing the film “Why Did I Get Married, Too?” at his Atlanta studios.

PRESIDENT’S GOT TALENT

President Obama

President Obama

Thanks to President Barack Obama, America’s still “got talent” tonight at 9 p.m.

In order to get NBC to broadcast his Wednesday night press conference, the White House agreed to move its previously announced 9 p.m. start time to 8 p.m., allowing the Peacock to air its heavily-promoted Susan Boyle edition of “Talent” in its regular 9 p.m. timeslot tonight.

With NBC on board, three of the four major broadcast networks will carry President Obama’s primetime news conference about health care reform.

FOX was the only network to decline the White House request outright. It was not about to disturb tonight’s two-hour live broadcast of “So You Think You Can Dance,” and will instead direct viewers to Fox News for the presser. This is the second time FOX has ruled against covering an Obama press conference, a move the network has made in the past when the event’s purpose seemed less than urgent.

WAS GATES “TOO LOUD”

Henry Louis Gates Jr.

Henry Louis Gates Jr.

Charges have been dropped against prominent Harvard University professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. after Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the city’s police department recommended that the matter not be pursued, reports CNN. Incidentialy, President Barack Obama came to Gate’s defense during his prime-time news conference Wednesday. He says the ploice acted stupidly and added that as far as we’ve come in race-relations, America still has a long way to go.
In a joint statement, Cambridge and the police department said they made the recommendation to the Middlesex County district attorney and the district attorney’s office “has agreed to enter a nolle prosequi in this matter,” meaning that it will not be pursued.

Gates was arrested last week on a charge of disorderly conduct after a confrontation with an officer at his home, according to a Cambridge police report.

Charles Ogletree, a professor at Harvard Law School who is Gates’ lawyer in this case, told CNN on Tuesday that Gates — the director of Harvard’s W. E. B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research — had returned from China on Thursday to his Cambridge home and discovered his front door jammed.
He opened his back door with his key and tried unsuccessfully from inside his home to open the front door. Eventually, Gates and his driver forced the door open from the outside, Ogletree said.

The professor was inside for several minutes when a police officer, Sgt. James Crowley, appeared at his steps and asked him to step outside, the lawyer said. According to his lawyer, Gates told the officer he lived there and showed him his Massachusetts driver’s license and Harvard University identification card. The officer followed him into his house and said he had received a report of a possible break-in, the lawyer said. Gates grew frustrated that the officer was continuing to question him in his home and asked for the officer’s name and badge number, Ogletree said.

The police report offers a different account of the incident. Gates refused to step outside to speak with the officer, the police report said, and when Crowley told Gates that he was investigating a possible break-in, Gates opened the front door and exclaimed, “Why, because I’m a black man in America?” the report said.

JEFFERSON’S EX BRIDE HAS NO HARD FEELINGS

Happier Days

Happier Days

Tabloids and gossips rags have painted Kesha Nichols as a jilted bride whose NBA star boyfriend left her at the altar days before the ceremony. But the founder of Sugar&SpiceNYC dance group and former New Jersey Nets dancer resents being depicted as a weak girl who was ditched at the altar; she sees herself as a strong woman who is dealing with a temporary setback.

NBA star Richard Jefferson’s former fiance talks about their breakup.”That’s my philosophy, just keep dancing for life,” Nichols told “Good Morning America” today. “Just keep picking up the pieces and keep going.”

Nichols, who dated popular San Antonio Spurs forward Richard Jefferson for five years, said the entire ordeal had been humiliating, but she that she held no ill will toward her former partner. She denied reports that she’d been dumped in an e-mail but said there was an e-mail that simply “confirmed what we already talked about.”

“I have no hard feelings. I will always care about him. … My heart is broken. I’ll miss him as a friend,” she said.

PROFESSOR HENRY LOUIS GATES ARRESTED

Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr.

Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr.

Police in Cambridge, Mass. responding to a call about “two black males” breaking into a home near Harvard University ended up arresting the owner of the house — Henry Louis Gates Jr., the nation’s pre-eminent black scholar.
Cambridge police say they responded to the well-maintained two-story home after a woman reported seeing “two black males with backpacks on the porch,” with one “wedging his shoulder into the door as if he was trying to force entry.”

It was Gates who was forcing his way through the front door because it was jammed, his lawyer told the Associated Press. Colleagues call the arrest last Thursday afternoon a clear case of racial profiling.

By the time police arrived, Gates was already inside. Police say he refused to come outside to speak with an officer, who told him he was investigating a report of a break-in.

“Why, because I’m a black man in America?” the Harvard professor said, according to a police report.
Gates — the director of Harvard’s W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research — initially refused to show the officer his identification, but then gave him a Harvard University ID card, according to police.

“Gates continued to yell at me, accusing me of racial bias and continued to tell me that I had not heard the last of him,” the officer wrote.

He was arrested on a disorderly conduct charge after police said he “exhibited loud and tumultuous behavior.” He was released later that day on his own recognizance. An arraignment was scheduled for Aug. 26. Police refused to comment on the arrest Monday.

CHRIS BROWN PUBLICLY APOLOGIZES FOR EVERYTHING

Chris Brown

Chris Brown

Chris Brown has posted a video to his website in which he pleads with fans to forgive him for the beating he handed former girlfriend Rihanna in February.

In the message, Brown says how sorry he is for the incident, and that he wanted to apologize earlier, but was unable to on the advice of his lawyer.

“Although I will do some interviews and answer some questions in the future, I felt it was time that you heard directly from me and that I am sorry,” he says.

“I wish I had the chance to live those few moments again. But, unfortunately, I can’t,” he says, referring to the altercation that left Rihanna with bruises and contusions on her face.

Sporting a red shirt, Brown says he can’t go into the specifics of the assault, but wants everyone to know that there is no excuse for his actions.

SONY BIDS 50 MILLION FOR JACKSON RIGHTS

Michael

Michael

Variety is reporting that Sony Pictures is close to a deal for a feature film that would draw on the 80 hours of rehearsal footage filmed for concerts Michael Jackson was preparing to perform in London.

The studio is expected to pay north of $50 million for worldwide rights to AEG Entertainment, which owns the footage and shopped it to studios last week, as previously reported.

The film will feature at least three videos, including an alternative version of Jackson’s “Thriller,” which were shot to be interstitial programming during the London concerts. The footage was meant to play in 3-D, but it’s unclear as yet whether the feature film will present it that way.

“High School Musical” director Kenny Ortega, who shot the rehearsal footage, is expected to direct the feature, and sources said he’s already beginning to put together the footage so Sony can release the film before year’s end.

Ortega has the time, as he won’t begin directing the Paramount remake of “Footloose” until next March, when star Chace Crawford is on hiatus from “Gossip Girl.”

Several studios were impressed when shown the footage by AEG last week. Fox, Universal, Paramount and Relativity likely would have met AEG’s asking price but knew that Sony Pictures had clear first position because sibling company Sony Music Entertainment owns music publishing rights to Jackson’s songs.

AEG is also selling TV and video rights to the Aug. 29 tribute concert scheduled in London on Jackson’s birthday. Justin Timberlake, Janet Jackson and others will perform the song list that Jackson planned, accompanied by the band that rehearsed with the late singer, Variety reported.

JANET AND DUPRI SPLIT?

Jermaine and Janet

Us Weekly is reporting that Janet Jackson and Jermaine Dupri have broken up in the wake of her brother Michael’s death. The magazine’s Web site quotes unnamed sources who say the couple called it quits after nearly seven years together because they are “polar opposites [who] were never too compatible.”
There had also been talk that the relationship was on shaky ground after Dupri was a no-show at Michael Jackson’s memorial service. “And I just learned that shortly before the King of Pop’s death, Janet left the publicist she shared with Dupri for another high-powered mouthpiece,” wrote E! Online’s Marc Malkin.
However, two days before the Staples Center tribute, Dupri and Jackson were spotted together grabbing a bite to eat at a burger stand at the Malibu Country Mart. “They seemed like they were still together,” an eyewitness told Malkin. s of now, Jackson is reportedly back in Atlanta reprising her role as Patricia in the sequel to Tyler Perry’s 2007 comedy hit “Why Did I Get Married?” Her costar Malik Yoba blogged last Monday that she was back and “all seems well.” Dupri has been traveling the country working DJ gigs. On Saturday night, he played Mixx nightclub at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City, dedicating one set to Michael. “I love you and I hear you Michael,” Dupri said, according to a clubgoer.
Meanwhile, gossip blogger Janet Charlton said the following of the alleged strained relationship: “One reason that Jermaine Dupri hasn’t been seen in the company of his off-again on-again girlfriend is because there’s a good chance that she will get custody of Michael’s three children. “Jermaine says he never goes to funerals and has been avoiding the hoopla over Michael, while Janet spends most of her time with her family, making numerous decisions. “Katherine Jackson has temporary custody of the children, but Janet has bonded with them and volunteered to raise them. The family agrees that Michael would have approved. Jermaine is keeping a low profile until things are settled.”

PRINCE MAKES RARE APPEARANCE AT FESTIVAL

see the video

Prince closed the two-week Swiss Montreux Jazz Festival on Sunday with two back-to-back concerts for thousands of enthusiastic fans.
The 51-year-old star gave the audience a mix of old hits including “Little Red Corvette,” “Peach” and “Purple Rain” and fresh titles such as “Elixir” from his new album with singer Bria Valente, reports Reuters.

Sporting a bright red suit, geometric gold necklace, and red and white platform shoes, Prince appeared on stage with his red guitar, bathed in his trademark purple light.

Some 8,000 tickets for his two gigs, priced up to $480 each, sold out in a record eight minutes when his only European booking this summer was announced just days after the death of Michael Jackson.

Prince performed a jazzy version of the song “In a Large Room With No Light” for both shows in Montreux, which organizers praised as a “groovy mix of soul, jazz and funk.” Changing into a metallic grey outfit, he closed the second show with “Purple Rain,” a chart-topper marking its 25th year.

John Blackwell (drums), Rhonda Smith (bass) and Renato Net and Morris Hayes (both on keyboards) accompanied Prince at Stravinski Auditorium.

HAS IDOL DUMPED PAULA?

Paula Abdul

Paula Abdul

Paula Abdul may not return to “American Idol” for a ninth season, her manager claimed in a new interview with the Los Angeles Times.
“She’s not a happy camper as a result of what’s going on. She’s hurt. She’s angry,” David Sonenberg, the “Idol” judge’s manager, told the newspaper on Friday, referring to stalled contract negotiations.

Sonenberg, who said he just became Abdul’s manager at the end of June, added that he has yet to receive a proposal for a new contract for Abdul.

“I find it under these circumstances particularly unusual; I think unnecessarily hurtful,” he said. “I find it kind of unconscionable and certainly rude and disrespectful that they haven’t stepped up and said what they want to do.”

The result of the stalled negotiations, Sonenberg said, is that Abdul is unlikely to be back on the show she’s judged for eight previous seasons.

“Very sadly, it does not appear that she’s going to be back on ‘Idol,’” he said. Abdul herself took her Twitter page to address the situation on Saturday.

”I’m actually moved 2 tears upon reading the enormous amount of tweets showing me your kindness, love, & undying support. God bless all of you!,” she Tweeted. “If it weren’t for you, this specific time and situation would feel a whole lot worse!”

Auditions for Season 9 began in June, with the show set to return in January.

QUINCY SAYS MICHAEL DIDN”T WANT TO BE BLACK

Michael and Quincy

Michael and Quincy

Grammy-winning music producer Quincy Jones argues in a controversial Details magazine interview – which we assume was done before Michael Jackson’s recent death – that Jackson “obviously didn’t want to be Black” and suggests that his psychological problem may have resulted from some childhood trauma.

In response to a question relating to how Jackson had begun to distort his face, Jones said, “It’s ridiculous, man! Chemical peels and all of it. And I don’t understand it. But he obviously didn’t want to be Black.”

Jones added that all one had to do to get a sense of what Jackson thought about his blackness was to “see his kids.” Reportedly, all three of Jackson’s children were conceived using eggs from white women and sperm from white men.

Asked if he ever talked with Jackson about whether he wanted to be a Black man, Jones replied, “That’s not the way you do it.” But he said Jackson told him the chemical treatments of his face were necessary because of a disease. But Jones said he did not believe him.

Jones then suggested that Jackson had experienced some childhood trauma that resulted in him not wanting to be Black. Jones, who is married to a white woman, explained, ”I’m not a psychiatrist … We all got problems. But there’s a great book out called ‘Too Soon Old, Too Late Smart.’ That book says the statute of limitations has expired on all childhood traumas. Get your stuff together and get on with your life … because everybody’s had a rough time in one way or another.”

YOBA SAYS JANET BACK AT WORK

Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson

Two weeks after the death of her brother Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson is reportedly back in Atlanta to begin work on Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married, Too?”

Malik Yoba, Jackson’s love interest in the original 2007 film, took to his audio blog Saturday while on location for the sequel, saying that Jackson was back on set.

“For those of you who are curious about the state of Ms. Jackson, all seems well,” Yoba said, according to Radar Online. “She’s here at work and we’ve got a couple of serious scenes to shoot today.”

Yoba also indicated that the cast will shoot for another week in Georgia, then head to the Bahamas for more filming.

ROWE DENIES SELLING KIDS

Debbie Rowe

Debbie Rowe

An attorney for Michael Jackson’s ex-wife Debbie Rowe on Tuesday angrily denied a New York Post report that she had agreed to take millions of dollars to give up parental rights to her two children with the entertainer.

In a letter to the New York Post, attorney Eric George said that Rowe, who was married to Michael Jackson from 1996 to 1999 and is the mother of his two oldest children, “has not and will not” give up her parental rights, according to Reuters.

Nor will Rowe, whose attorneys have been in talks with lawyers for Michael Jackson’s parents, Katherine and Joe, take any money beyond the spousal support to which she and the singer agreed upon years ago, George’s letter states.

In a 2002 will signed by Michael Jackson, he said he had “intentionally omitted” to provide for Rowe.

The New York Post reported Tuesday that Rowe had agreed to take about $4 million to give up her parental rights to children Prince Michael Jr., 12, and Paris, 11.

George has asked the newspaper to publish a retraction. In a statement, New York Post editor in chief Col Allan said, “The Post stands by its story.”

Katherine Jackson, 79, was granted temporary guardianship of her son’s three children on June 29, only days after the “Thriller” singer died. George’s letter states that no agreement has been reached between Rowe and the Jacksons on custody or visitation.

Rowe in 2001 sought to give up parental rights to her children, but she later went to court to contest her waiver of those rights and it never went into effect. A custody hearing on Jackson’s three children is set for this coming Monday.

DENZEL IS STOPPABLE

Denzel Washington

Denzel Washington

If you snooze, you lose – at least when it comes to Denzel Washington. Just ask 20th Century Fox.
The Oscar winner has formally withdrawn from the studio’s film “Unstoppable” after waiting three months for the company to set a budget and a start date, reports Variety. Washington is now said to be looking at other projects for the fall.

Fox reportedly tried coming back to the table with a different offer it hoped would entice him to reconsider.

As previously reported, Washington said in April he would re-team with director Tony Scott, this time to play a veteran engineer who jumps into a locomotive with a young conductor (“Star Trek’s” Chris Pine) to halt an unmanned runaway train filled with a toxic chemical.

While Washington and Scott will keep talking this week as the longtime collaborators promote “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3” in Europe, the actor’s reps confirm he is available.

STEFFANS BUSTED

Karrine Steffans

Karrine Steffans

Karrine “Superhead” Steffans is getting a taste of her own medicine with the release of “Kiss and Tail: The Hollywood Jump-off,” a DVD documentary featuring singer Norwood Young that reveals even more secrets about the former music video vixen than she has already told.

In the video, Young claims that Steffans admitted faking her tears during an appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” to promote her 2006 best-seller, “Confessions of a Video Vixen.”

Per the New York Daily News, Young also claims in the film that Steffans secretly recorded men during sex, and threatened her boyfriend Darius McCrary with a knife.

McCrary himself appears in the documentary. Even though Steffans says he’s now her husband, he calls her a “scorpion” and alleges she “socks” her 11-year-old son.

Steffans declined to comment, except to say she’s talking with her lawyers

AEG CONSIDERING CONCERTS HONORING MICHAEL

Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson

Still dizzy from the extremes of preparing Michael Jackson’s 50-night O2 Arena stand one minute, to his televised memorial the next, AEG is currently mulling how to best present Jackson’s final work to his fans.
The company is considering a tribute concert at London’s O2 utilizing the massive production that was put together for his “This Is It” concerts, reports Billboard.

“We’re just starting to get into that now, to figure out how to unveil all the stuff we have to the world,” says Randy Phillips, CEO of AEG Live. “I think at some point we’ll show Michael’s last masterpiece, This Is It, to the world.”

This Is It intellectual property, including Jackson’s “mini-movies” produced for the shows, is “all locked up at the Staples Center in the vault. The production, staging and all that is in warehouses under lock and key,” said Phillips. “And the dancers and everyone else want to do the show for the world one time, so we kind of have them on hold, but we don’t have anything confirmed yet.”

Speculation has been that the tribute show might be staged on what would have been Jackson’s 51st birthday on Aug. 29. “That would be the ideal time, but we’re not sure we can get it together in time,” Phillips says.

Regarding the MJ This Is It merchandise, Phillips says it is selling “big time” on the Web site and will be offered at retail at some point. “I have a book of 300-plus of the most amazing items Michael designed with Bravado that are just spectacular, the best merch I’ve ever seen in my life,” he says.

LA MAYOR SAYS CITY WILL PAY FOR MEMORIAL

Antonio Villariagosa

Antonio Villariagosa

Last week certain Los Angeles city council members and the temporary mayor were freaking out over the cost of the Michael Jackson memorial held at the Staples Center, downtown.

They went as far as to ask the public for donations to cover the approximately $1.4 million dollar tab to the city.

Well, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (Vee-ya-rai-gosa) is back from a week-long vacation in South Africa and is not with the program at all.

It seems that upon his return, the mayor shut down the website asking for donations to cover the cost of Michael Jackson’s funeral.

“This is a world-class city, and we provide fire and police protection, period,” Villaraigosa told reporters during a visit to Los Angeles Trade-Technical College. “The idea that we would charge the family for a funeral is nonsensical.”

During his absence, his office created a website on which residents could make donations to help cover the costs of the event. It is said that the website had brought in around $35,000 before it was closed down. He did not state if the donated money would be returned.

Villaraigosa said it is the city’s responsibility to provide police and fire services. He did go into the fact that this was a private event, not a city, State or Federal event.

That prompted some wags to wonder if the city of Los Angeles is willing to pay $1.4 million for Jackson’s funeral does that mean the city is willing do so for each and every person who wishes to hold a party, wedding or funeral as well?

But what we find amazing is that Mayor Villaraigosa, the king of the photo-opp & soundbyte, didn’t hop a plane back to the city for another opportunity to milk the situation to his advantage. Who knew … he wouldn’t?

PRESIDENT SELECTS TOP DOC

Regina Benjamin

Regina Benjamin

President Barack Obama nominated an Alabama country doctor who has three times resurrected her clinic in a fishing village after disasters to be U.S. surgeon general on Monday and help him advocate for healthcare reform.

Dr. Regina Benjamin promised to advocate for Obama’s healthcare agenda as “America’s doctor” if she gets the job as chief public spokesperson on health issues, saying her own family and patients have been victims of the failing U.S. system.

“Through floods and fire and severe want, Regina Benjamin has refused to give up. Her patients have refused to give up,” Obama said in a White House Rose Garden announcement.

U.S. surgeons general in the past have issued influential reports on topics including smoking, AIDS and mental health.

Benjamin said she not only wanted to serve in the traditional role of surgeon general, encouraging healthy habits, but press to make medical care more easily available.

“My hope, if confirmed as surgeon general, is to be America’s doctor, America’s family physician,” she said.

“As we work toward a solution to this healthcare crisis, I promise to communicate directly with the American people to help guide them through whatever changes may come with healthcare reform,” she added.

“I want to ensure that no one, no one falls through the cracks as we improve our healthcare system.”

Benjamin won a MacArthur Foundation “genius” grant in 2008 for founding and nurturing the Bayou La Batre Rural Health Clinic to serve a Gulf Coast fishing community in 1990. It was devastated by Hurricanes Georges in 1998 and Katrina in 2005, and a third time by fire

JOE JACKSON SUSPECTS FOUL PLAY IN MICHAEL’S DEATH

Joe Jackson

Joe Jackson

The father and sister of Michael Jackson both suspect that the entertainer’s June 25 death following cardiac arrest came at the hands of a second party.

Family patriarch Joe Jackson told ABC News Friday he suspected “foul play” in the death of his son, and that he was dumbfounded when he learned his son collapsed at home and was being rushed to the hospital.

“I just couldn’t believe what was happening to Michael. I do believe it was foul play. I do believe that,” he said, without elaborating.

Since Jackson’s death, numerous media reports have surfaced about powerful prescription drugs found by police at Jackson’s home.

“I didn’t know anything about the drugs,” Joe Jackson said. “I didn’t even know the name of them. But I do know that whatever he’d taken was to try to make him rest because he had been working so hard, and that drug was supposed to try and make him relax. But anyway, he didn’t wake up. He never woke up. Michael died in his sleep.” Toxicology reports are pending on the official cause of death.

BERRY GORDY IS THE KEEPER

Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson

The New York Post is reporting that the casket containing Michael Jackson, who died June 25 following cardiac arrest, is being temporarily housed in a Forest Lawn crypt belonging to Motown founder Berry Gordy.
The crypt is described as a sparse, empty mausoleum highlighted by a G monogram and located on the same property as the graves for such Hollywood icons as Lucille Ball, Bette Davis, Gene Autry and Sandra Dee, as well as James Bond producer Cubby Broccoli, comic Freddie Prinze and flamboyant entertainer Liberace.

As for Michael’s final resting place, his brother Jermaine and father Joseph reportedly want him buried at the Neverland Ranch, where a prospective museum could generate future income, despite a likely lengthy process to transform the property into a Graceland-like tourist attraction.

But Michael’s mom Katherine and the other siblings are reportedly against a Neverland burial, in keeping with Michael’s desire never to return there after he believed sheriff’s deputies had tainted the property when they sought evidence in his child-molestation case.

“Katherine doesn’t want him at Neverland,” a source tells People.com. “She thinks it’s a place of horrible memories. She says Michael wouldn’t want to be there. Part of the family disagrees with her. But Katherine definitely wants to keep Michael’s wishes that he not rest at Neverland.”

Also, LaToya told the Daily Mirror her brother would “absolutely not” be laid to rest at his Neverland Ranch.

That’s So Raven” star Raven-Symoné has been the subject of Web-circulated rumors that claim she is either pregnant, or has already given birth to her first baby – but a rep for the 23-year-old mogul says neither report is true.

“Raven-Symoné is not pregnant nor did she give birth,” her publicist tells People.com.

Numerous media outlets have claimed that Raven-Symoné had been hiding a pregnancy, and the stories reached a fevered pitch earlier this week with reports that she had gone on to deliver a healthy baby girl.

Her latest album, the self-titled Raven-Symoné, is in stores now.

MARIAH CAREY EXPLAINS UNEVEN PERFORMANCE

Mariah Carey-Cannon

Mariah Carey-Cannon

Mariah Carey is apologizing for her performance at Michael Jackson’s memorial on Tuesday, believing she could have done a better job performing his Jackson 5 hit “I’ll be There.”

The songbird says she lost control of her voice when she took the stage above Jackson’s casket and was suddenly overcome with emotion.

“Trying to sing today was basically impossible for me,” Carey wrote Tuesday on her Twitter page. “I could barely keep myself from crying. I’m sorry that I wasn’t able to pull it together and really do it right, but I was literally choked up when I saw him there in front of me.”

“One thing I know is, we will never really have to say goodbye to MJ. His legacy lives on through his music and the millions of people. He inspired with his timeless music. He will be forever in our hearts,” she adds.

JACKSON STILL DOMINATES THE CHARTS

michael_jackson_pray

Michael Jackson records continue to saturate the Billboard charts.
Based on preliminary sales numbers from Nielsen SoundScan, the King of Pop’s catalog of solo albums sold a whopping 800,000 copies in the U.S. in the tracking week that ended at the close of business on Sunday (July 5) night. That’s an increase of 90% compared to the previous week, when his combined albums sold 422,000.

A jump in sales was expected, since this was the first full week of sales since Jackson’s passing on June 25. Additionally, after most physical retailers swiftly sold out of available Jackson albums, Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music Group were able to replenish brick-and-mortar stores with CDs last week to meet customer demand.

In turn, physical albums accounted for 82% of Jackson’s sales last week — 656,000 physical albums versus 144,000 download albums. In the week previous, when Jackson’s albums moved a total of 422,000, physical albums accounted for 43% of that sum (181,000) while digital albums made up the other 57% (241,000).

Jackson’s “Number Ones” collection is currently the top selling album in the United States, with 339,000 (up 215%), according to Nielsen SoundScan. Its also No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Comprehensive Albums chart, followed by “Thriller” at No. 2 with 187,000 (up 86%).

Jackson will also again dominate the Top Pop Catalog Albums chart. It tallies albums that are more than 18 months old, have fallen below No. 100 on the Billboard 200 and don’t have a current radio single. Catalog albums are ineligible to appear on The Billboard 200 chart though they can chart on the Top Comprehensive Albums chart.

Last week, Jackson had a record eight albums out of the top 10 on the Top Pop Catalog Albums chart, while a Jackson 5 compilation also found its way into the upper tier. This week, the entire top 10 is all-Jackson, all the time. He alone has albums at Nos. 1-6 and Nos. 8-10 while a Jackson 5 title (“The Ultimate Collection”) resides at No. 7.

On Billboard’s Hot Digital Songs chart, Jackson will hold down five out of the top 10 slots, with “Man in the Mirror” leading as his top selling digital download song of the week (159,000; down 3%). Overall, it ranks as the second-best selling song of the week, next to the Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling” (215,000; up 6%).

Jackson’s total song download sales this week — including his works with the Jackson 5 and the Jacksons — stand at 2.2 million downloads. Last week, the collected total was 2.6 million.

DIDDY BEING HIMSELF

Diddy

Diddy

Word has it that Diddy got upset with a cameraman during the NBA Finals at the Staples Center after his image flashed on the jumbotron and people booed.
According to gossip blogger Janet Charlton, the crowd was either booing Diddy personally, or his New York Yankees baseball cap, which never goes over well in Los Angeles. In either case, the mogul was said to be furious and approached the camera guy at halftime.

He reportedly yelled, “How dare you! Don’t ever put me up on that screen without my permission! You have to set it up with my people!”

According to Charlton, Diddy arrived at the game the following Sunday with his son – both swimming in Laker gear from head to toe. They sat courtside but never appeared on the jumbotron, like other famous faces did.

At halftime Diddy approached the same jumbotron guy and reportedly said “C’mon, man, why don’t you put me onscreen? I’m here with my son!” The guy looked at Diddy and said “No! After last time – never again!”

PARIS JACKSON SAYS EMOTIONAL GOODBYE

(Watch Video Below)

Paris Jackson

Paris Jackson

The public memorial service for Michael Jackson on Tuesday featured memorable performances from Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, Usher and others, but it was the King of Pop’s 11-year-old daughter who left the biggest impression with mourners inside of the Staples Center and the billions watching around the world.

As the star-studded tribute concluded, Jackson’s children, Prince Michael, 12, Paris Katherine, 11, and Prince Michael II (Blanket), 7, took the stage during a group performance of “Heal the World.”

After the song, Paris gave an impromptu speech from the stage surrounded by the Jackson family.

“I just want to say ever since I was born, Daddy has been the best father you can ever imagine,” she said through tears. “And I just want to say I love him so much.”

She then broke down into the arms of her aunt Janet Jackson before the entire Jackson family surrounded them. It was one of the first times any of Jackson’s children had ever been heard publicly.

Meanwhile, 12-year-old Michael Joseph Jr., known as Prince Michael; and 7-year-old Prince Michael II, known as Blanket, were also in attendance for their father’s memorial. Both wore the same dark suit and yellow tie as the rest of the men in the Jackson family, and Paris wore a black dress with white trim.

Gone were the veils, the party masks and the guarded gates and walls that kept the Jackson children hidden from view for more than a decade. Those were replaced with images of their young faces up on stage as the ceremony came to a close, comforting one another and fidgeting as kids will: Prince chewed gum and toted the memorial service program; Paris turned a small patent-leather purse over in her hands; and Blanket held his program and clutched a Michael Jackson doll.

JERMAINE SMILES FOR MICHAEL

(Watch Video Below)

Jermaine Jackson

Jermaine Jackson

In a touching personal tribute to Michael Jackson by his longtime friend Brooke Shields, the actress mentioned that his favorite song was “Smile,” a tune written by Charlie Chaplin for his 1936 film “Modern Times.”
“There is a line [in the song] that says, ‘Smile when your heart is aching,’ ” Shields said in her speech. “And though our hearts are aching, we need to look up, where [Michael] is undoubtedly perched in a crescent moon, and we need to smile.”

With that, Jermaine Jackson took the stage – dressed in a dark suit and wearing a single, sequined glove – and gave an emotional rendition of “Smile” through a voice that at times choked with emotion.

“That’s the time you must keep on trying/ Smile, what’s the use in crying?” he sang, stopping for a few beats to stop the tears from falling down his cheeks. “You’ll find that life is still worthwhile/ If you just smile.”

As the Staples Center gave him a standing ovation, Jackson took a petal from his boutonniere and gently flicked it onto the lid of his brother’s gold-plated casket. He then walked off the stage, into the arms of his awaiting family, while a single spotlight shone on the stage and an image of the Jackson 5 appeared on the screens.

MUDER SUICIDE IN MCNAIR CASE

Steve McNair

Steve McNair

Nashville police have now confirmed what was believed all along. Ex-NFL star Steve McNair’s 20-year-old girlfriend killed him before turning the gun on herself.

They said they may never know what was going through Sahel Kazemi’s mind when she shot McNair in his condominium early Saturday, but interviews with friends led detectives to conclude she was becoming increasingly distraught over events in her life, including financial problems. Police said she also suspected McNair was seeing another woman.

Police earlier had labeled McNair’s death a homicide, but awaited further tests and investigation before saying for sure what happened.

At one point, Kazemi told an associate that her “personal life was all screwed up,” Police Chief Ronal Serpas said.

She had mounting debts and had been unable to sell her car. Her roommate was moving, which would have doubled her rent.

“We do know that she was clearly sending a message during the last five to seven days of her life that things were going bad quickly,” Serpas said, though there was no indication she told anyone she planned to harm McNair.
