Welcome to Solid Gold Soul

MJ On Ebony 2

The past two weeks has been like no other with a myriad of tragedies and triumphs. First, television’s Ed McMahon succumbed, followed by actress, Farah Fawcett and Michael Jackson the same day. And then the Oxi-Clean guy…(didn’t really know him) Tennis star, Serena Williams beat her sister at Wimbledom for the second time. They now have two victories each. Tiger Woods demonstrated yet another way to best the field at a golf tournament named for him; and on the same day, Steve McNair, the second African American quarterback to start in a Super Bowl, was fatally shot in Nashville and former DC Mayor Marion Barry is said to have been jailed for stalking. All the while President Barack Obama is trying to hammer out a health care plan as he searches for the pillars of peace with Russian leaders.

Each of these success and tragedies are important, however the singular event garnering the world’s sustained attention is Michael Jackson. For example, millions logged on to a website trying to win a lottery-styled selection process to attend the Jackson Memorial services at the Staples Center. Reports indicate Michael’s body was transported to the Staples Center for the public memorial. Today, however only 17,500 people now hold tickets to the greatest, perhaps not-final spectacular bearing his name.

Insiders say promoters of his This Is It tour will find a way to create a pay-per-view world event, by stringing together images from Michael’s final LA rehearsals. And for all the dancing Michael is known for on stage and in videos, it’s still his vocal prowess that etches its place in the minds of most fans with whom I’ve spoken.

The task recently posed to my Facebook Friends was to name a favorite Michael Jackson song. Here’s a sampling of the responses.

“I’ll Be There; Remember the Time; Man in the Mirror; You’re Not Alone; and “Human Nature,” says Ro. “It came out in 82 when I was two-years old. My mom played it all the time. The song reminds me of my childhood and the whole album rocks, which is why it sold 63 million copies,” she said. Others include; Baby Be Mine; Never Can Say Goodbye; Rock with You and Remember the Time. The interesting thing about these selections is they’re all ballads and were listed multiple times, along with the occasional dance selections like, Thriller and Dancin’ Machine.

The world will certainly miss Michael’s stage ingenuity and dancing creations for sure, however, I believe most fans will remember the timelessness of his music and the way Michael could interpret and sing a song.

You Rocked Our World Michael.

Rest in Peace
