JANET AND DUPRI SPLIT?

Jermaine and Janet

Us Weekly is reporting that Janet Jackson and Jermaine Dupri have broken up in the wake of her brother Michael’s death. The magazine’s Web site quotes unnamed sources who say the couple called it quits after nearly seven years together because they are “polar opposites [who] were never too compatible.”
There had also been talk that the relationship was on shaky ground after Dupri was a no-show at Michael Jackson’s memorial service. “And I just learned that shortly before the King of Pop’s death, Janet left the publicist she shared with Dupri for another high-powered mouthpiece,” wrote E! Online’s Marc Malkin.
However, two days before the Staples Center tribute, Dupri and Jackson were spotted together grabbing a bite to eat at a burger stand at the Malibu Country Mart. “They seemed like they were still together,” an eyewitness told Malkin. s of now, Jackson is reportedly back in Atlanta reprising her role as Patricia in the sequel to Tyler Perry’s 2007 comedy hit “Why Did I Get Married?” Her costar Malik Yoba blogged last Monday that she was back and “all seems well.” Dupri has been traveling the country working DJ gigs. On Saturday night, he played Mixx nightclub at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City, dedicating one set to Michael. “I love you and I hear you Michael,” Dupri said, according to a clubgoer.
Meanwhile, gossip blogger Janet Charlton said the following of the alleged strained relationship: “One reason that Jermaine Dupri hasn’t been seen in the company of his off-again on-again girlfriend is because there’s a good chance that she will get custody of Michael’s three children. “Jermaine says he never goes to funerals and has been avoiding the hoopla over Michael, while Janet spends most of her time with her family, making numerous decisions. “Katherine Jackson has temporary custody of the children, but Janet has bonded with them and volunteered to raise them. The family agrees that Michael would have approved. Jermaine is keeping a low profile until things are settled.”

PRINCE MAKES RARE APPEARANCE AT FESTIVAL

Prince closed the two-week Swiss Montreux Jazz Festival on Sunday with two back-to-back concerts for thousands of enthusiastic fans.
The 51-year-old star gave the audience a mix of old hits including “Little Red Corvette,” “Peach” and “Purple Rain” and fresh titles such as “Elixir” from his new album with singer Bria Valente, reports Reuters.

Sporting a bright red suit, geometric gold necklace, and red and white platform shoes, Prince appeared on stage with his red guitar, bathed in his trademark purple light.

Some 8,000 tickets for his two gigs, priced up to $480 each, sold out in a record eight minutes when his only European booking this summer was announced just days after the death of Michael Jackson.

Prince performed a jazzy version of the song “In a Large Room With No Light” for both shows in Montreux, which organizers praised as a “groovy mix of soul, jazz and funk.” Changing into a metallic grey outfit, he closed the second show with “Purple Rain,” a chart-topper marking its 25th year.

John Blackwell (drums), Rhonda Smith (bass) and Renato Net and Morris Hayes (both on keyboards) accompanied Prince at Stravinski Auditorium.

HAS IDOL DUMPED PAULA?

Paula Abdul

Paula Abdul

Paula Abdul may not return to “American Idol” for a ninth season, her manager claimed in a new interview with the Los Angeles Times.
“She’s not a happy camper as a result of what’s going on. She’s hurt. She’s angry,” David Sonenberg, the “Idol” judge’s manager, told the newspaper on Friday, referring to stalled contract negotiations.

Sonenberg, who said he just became Abdul’s manager at the end of June, added that he has yet to receive a proposal for a new contract for Abdul.

“I find it under these circumstances particularly unusual; I think unnecessarily hurtful,” he said. “I find it kind of unconscionable and certainly rude and disrespectful that they haven’t stepped up and said what they want to do.”

The result of the stalled negotiations, Sonenberg said, is that Abdul is unlikely to be back on the show she’s judged for eight previous seasons.

“Very sadly, it does not appear that she’s going to be back on ‘Idol,’” he said. Abdul herself took her Twitter page to address the situation on Saturday.

”I’m actually moved 2 tears upon reading the enormous amount of tweets showing me your kindness, love, & undying support. God bless all of you!,” she Tweeted. “If it weren’t for you, this specific time and situation would feel a whole lot worse!”

Auditions for Season 9 began in June, with the show set to return in January.
