KATHERINE JACKSON TALKS WITH GERALDO

Katherine Jackson

Katherine Jackson

Michael Jackson’s mother Katherine appeared as a guest on Fox News Channel’s “Geraldo at Large” on Sunday to discuss the circumstances surrounding the death of her son.

“All I know is that my son is dead, and I don’t think he just died of natural causes or whatever,” said Jackson, 79, in her first interview since the King of Pop’s June 25 passing. “He’s too young for that. Something happened, I don’t know what it was and I can’t say.”

Katherine, who was granted custody of Michael’s three children on Monday, also gave a terse update on them. “The children are doing fine,” she said.

She denies various media reports suggesting that her husband Joe Jackson isn’t allowed to see the grandchildren. “I don’t know why they’re saying he’s not being allowed in the house,” says Katherine, who is still married to Joe but no longer lives with him. “My husband’s never done nothing of the sort that they trying to say he did 39 years ago. I don’t understand that, and I just believe it’s something that they cooked up.”

MARIAH CAREY NEW CD CONTAINS ADS

Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey

Billboard is reporting that Island Def Jam Music Group is using the Sept. 15 release of Mariah Carey’s album “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel” to launch a new business model: integrating brands into artists’ CD booklets.

The first deal will involve a 34-page co-production with Elle magazine that includes lifestyle ads from Elizabeth Arden, Angel Champagne, Carmen Steffens, Le Métier de Beauté and the Bahamas Board of Tourism.

Providing the Carey experiment goes well, the label is eyeing bigger brand deals for booklets of CDs by Rihanna, Bon Jovi, Kanye West and other artists.’ The mini magazine contains Mariah-centric editorial (“VIP Access to Her Sexy Love Life,” “Amazing Closet,” “Recording Rituals”) and lifestyle advertising along with lyrics and other CD booklet elements. Elle contributed the editorial and designed the layout.

The booklets were created for the first run of U.S. CDs (1 million) and the first 500,000 overseas, said Jeff Straughn, svp-strategic marketing for Island Def Jam Music Group. It will also be available in a digital format for those who buy music online. A condensed version of the Mariah magazine, sans the 14 pages of CD-specific material, will be inserted into 500,000 subscription copies of Elle’s October issue, which arrives mid-September.

Carey was “very open” to the concept when IDJ chairman Antonio “L.A.” Reid showed her a mock-up of the booklet in a magazine format that included brand imagery synonymous with her lifestyle. “I wouldn’t want to do Mariah Carey and Comet abrasive cleaner,” Reid said, laughing. “I wanted things that really reflected her taste.”

Additionally, Mariah is to perform tonite on America’s Got Talent.

SHEMAR MOORE SUFFERS BROKEN LEG

Shemar Moore

Shemar Moore

Shemar Moore took the term “break a leg” a little too seriously.

According to his rep, the “Criminal Minds” and former “The Young and the Restless” actor was riding his bike in Los Angeles over the weekend when he was hit by a car.

Following the accident, the actor was rushed to an L.A.-area hospital where he was treated for a fracture.

“His leg was broken, but he is OK,” said Moore’s publicist Staci Wolfe.

No word if the injury will be written into his series “Criminal Minds,” in which Moore plays investigator Derek Morgan.

PAULA IS OUT

Paula Abdul

Paula Abdul

Via Twitter, the walking drama that is Paula Abdul has made the shocking announcement (to some) that she’s leaving “American Idol.” Here’s what she had to say:

“With sadness in my heart, I’ve decided not to return to ‘Idol’ … I’ll miss nurturing all the new talent, but most of all being a part of a show that I helped from Day 1 become an international phenomenon … What I want to say most, is how much I appreciate the undying support and enormous love that you have showered upon me … It truly has been breathtaking, especially over the past month … I do without any doubt have the BEST fans in the entire world and I love you all.”

Well there you have it, the day that some folks can’t imagine has finally come. Meanwhile – in a statement – Fox, FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment confirmed that Abdul’s has indeed left the building:

“Paula Abdul has been an important part of the ‘American Idol’ family over the last eight seasons, and we are saddened that she has decided not to return to the show. While Paula will not be continuing with us, she’s a tremendous talent and we wish her the best.”

But the burning question is why? The Hollwood Reporter says sources told them that Abdul asked for about $20 million to continue with the show. She rejected a 30% raise; an eight-figure multi-year deal.

Keep in mind that two other members on the “Idol” family, Ryan Seacrest and Simon Cowell, have been resigned for huge money. Then there’s the newest judge Kara DioGuardi who has also re-signed to the show.

Cowell, who in the spring indicated he may leave at the end of his current deal, is already talking to “Idol” producers for a new contract, reportedly seeking more than $100 million a year.

Meanwhile, host Ryan Seacrest has already agreed to return as part of a broader three-year $45 million deal with 19 Entertainment.

“Sources say Fox was willing to have all four judges return and that DioGuardi’s deal wasn’t made as a pre-emptive replacement for Abdul, reports THR.com. “On the other hand, the network and producers were sufficiently irked when Abdul’s manager took negotiations to the media last month and told the LA Times that producers are being ‘rude and disrespectful’ to Abdul by not having ‘stepped up.'”

Because we haven’t heard a peep out of him, we can only wonder what the other “Idol” judge Randy Jackson has to say about all of this.
