REPRESENTATIVE JEFFERSON CONVICTED IN FREEZER CASE

William Jefferson

William Jefferson

Former congressman William Jefferson (D-La.) was convicted on 11 of 16 corruption charges by a federal jury on Wednesday after five days of deliberation.

Jefferson was charged with soliciting bribes and other crimes for a series of schemes in which he helped American businesses broker deals in West Africa in exchange for payments or financial considerations to companies controlled by members of his family, including his brother Mose, his wife, Andrea, their five daughters and a son-in-law.

Jefferson, 62, who represented the New Orleans-based 2nd Congressional District for nine terms, will now face sentencing by Judge T.S. Ellis III, who earlier meted out stiff sentences for lesser figures in the case. According to the U.S. attorney’s office, Jefferson faced 235 years in prison if convicted on all counts, and will still face substantial prison time.

The Louisiana Democrat was the first member of Congress ever charged under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. He was accused of trying to bribe Nigerian officials over a telecom contract for a business associate. Jefferson secretly controlled part of the company seeking the contract, and if successful, would have been in line to potentially earn millions of dollars in illicit profits.

In July 2005, Jefferson was secretly filmed by FBI agents taking a $100,000 bribes from a government informant. A raid on his Virginia home turned up $90,000 in marked money in the freezer.

JANET’S MANY DEALS

Janet

Janet

CNS is reporting that Janet Jackson’s long-gestating book about her weight fluctuations will now be a memoir that will take an intimate look at her entire life and career.

Following the sudden death of her brother Michael in June, Janet is said to be moving forward with the as-yet-untitled book, the Tyler Perry movie “Why Did I Get Married Too” and a new album – all due by early 2010.

The memoir, which was intended to shed light on her weight struggle, will reportedly focus more on issues of self-esteem and provide details of her career and life that were never-before revealed.

“Why Did I Get Married Too” features the singer-actress reprises her role as psychologist Patricia in the sequel to 2008’s “Why Did I Get Married.” Her 11th studio album, the first since 2008’s “Discipline,” will hit stores in early 2010.

REASONS BEHIND PAULA’S DEPARTURE

Paula Abdul

Paula Abdul

TMZ says it has the lowdown on what went down between Paula Abdul and the suits at “American Idol.”

Apparently, as we reported yesterday, the vibe between them, as they negotiated a new contract was so bad, she had a Paula moment and up and bolted.

It seems the folks on the other side of the table from her found out she was through with them via Twitter just like the rest of the world did.

Supposedly Ms. Abdul was banking somewhere between $2 and $3 million a year and she wanted more. TMZ’s sources say “A.I.” made her an offer that she didn’t like at all. Paula countered but producers didn’t want to pay that much, so they countered with another offer.

Rather than responding to the second offer, that’s when Paula responded by tweeting her adios. Did she think about the repercussions? Maybe she did and maybe she didn’t. We all know Paula is shall we say, “flighty” to the nth degree and then some. The bottom line is that the folks at “AI” took her seriously and also said thank you and goodbye via their official statement.

But being cute and “Straight Up” crazy, Paula has still got some options ’cause when you get right down to it, Hollywood loves crazy. Add that to the fact that she’s a household name and easy to look at, she’ll have offers flying at her.

In particular, the word on the street is that producer Nigel Lythgoe has given her a standing offer to be a guest judge on “So You Think You Can Dance.” We think it would be a good move. If she stays “crazy,” but acts “right,” she could be making Simon and Ryan Seacrest money.

Which reminds us to tell you that there’s another school of thought going around that she just might still end up on “AI” with the raise she wants.

You see, according to the Hollywood Reporter, insiders wonder how Abdul’s exit may impact the DNA of the show. She’s really, really popular with “AI” fans

Abdul’s unpredictability and sibling-like relationship with Simon Cowell were seen as a major draw. Need we say more?
