The New York Daily News is quoting unnamed industry folk who swear that Team Mariah’s decision to push back the release of her upcoming album is twofold: to avoid another string of bad luck at the Grammys and to sidestep a sales showdown with Whitney Houston.
Mariah Carey has won a mere five awards out of 21 nominations since 1991. With her new album “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel” due on Sept. 29, she misses the next Grammy cutoff date by just one day.

“Mariah’s been shafted so many times before that it’s like a big ‘Kiss my butt’ to the Grammy folks,” the Daily News quotes of a music industry insider. “She doesn’t need the awards, because her career is already so successful.”

Meanwhile, Whitney’s new CD “I Look to You” will be released on Sept. 1, nearly a month earlier than Carey’s.

In a battle of lead singles, Houston’s title track received a lukewarm reception on pop radio, finally debuting on Billboard’s Hot 100 last week at No. 74. Mariah, meanwhile, entered the same chart at No. 11 with “Obsessed.”

Houston’s second single is the Alicia Keys/Swizz Beatz-penned track “Million Dollar Bill.”
