It’s now official – Venus and Serena Williams are now part owners of the National Football League’s Miami Dolphins. The accomplishment makes them the first female African-Americans to hold an ownership stake in a NFL franchise.

The tennis stars have joined Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez and Gloria and Emilio Estefan in becoming limited ownership partners in the Florida team.

“I am so excited to be part of such a renowned organization,” says Serena. “Having spent so much of my childhood in the area, being involved with a staple of Miami culture is a huge honor. We look forward to many championships and much success together with the Miami Dolphins.”

Agrees Venus, “I am honored to be a partner in the Miami Dolphins franchise and thankful to owner Stephen Ross for allowing Serena and I to be part of Miami Dolphins history.”
In addition to welcoming these new owners to the Dolphins, other celebrity oriented promotions will further tap into Miami’s cultural diversity. Rapper T-Pain has updated the Dolphins’ out-of-date fight song, and other pop stars such as Fergie, who is a frequent visitor to Miami and a lover of the Dolphins, will perform at football games.

Chili and TBoz

Chili and TBoz

The surviving members of TLC will perform together on U.S. soil for the first time in seven years – as part of a benefit concert hosted by Justin Timberlake, reports People.com
Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas will reunite for the “Justin Timberlake and Friends” concert, to be held Oct. 17 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

The four-time R&B Grammy winners, who scored dozens of Billboard hits in the 1990s, lost third member Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes when she was killed in a 2002 car accident.

Along with Timberlake and TLC, country superstar Taylor Swift and vocalists Alicia Keys and Ciara have also been added to the ticket. Tickets go on sale Saturday.

The benefit concert highlights a weeklong golf tournament to be hosted by Timberlake in Sin City Oct. 11-18 – the 2009 Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. The 28-year-old singer is in the second year of a five-year partnership with Shriners to host the golf tournament and benefit concert.

EDWARD KENNEDY PASSES

Ted Kennedy

Ted Kennedy

BOSTON (Reuters) – U.S. Senator Edward Kennedy, a towering figure in the Democratic Party who took the helm of one of America’s most fabled political families after two older brothers were assassinated, died at age 77, his family said.

“Edward M. Kennedy, the husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle we loved so deeply, died late Tuesday night at home in Hyannis Port (Massachusetts),” the Kennedy family said in a statement early on Wednesday.

One of the most influential and longest-serving senators in U.S. history — a liberal standard-bearer who was also known as a consummate congressional dealmaker — Kennedy had been battling brain cancer, which was diagnosed in May 2008.

His death marked the twilight of a political dynasty and dealt a blow to Democrats as they seek to answer President Barack Obama’s call for an overhaul of the healthcare system.

Kennedy was a longtime advocate of healthcare reform, a signature issue of Obama’s presidency. Obama said on Wednesday he was heartbroken to hear of the death of Kennedy, a crucial supporter of his presidential candidacy.

“I valued his wise counsel in the Senate, where, regardless of the swirl of events, he always had time for a new colleague. I cherished his confidence and momentous support in my race for the Presidency. And even as he waged a valiant struggle with a mortal illness, I’ve profited as President from his encouragement and wisdom,” said Obama, who was elected last November and took office in January.

Kennedy had recently urged Massachusetts lawmakers to change state law so the governor, if necessary, could quickly fill a Senate vacancy as the chamber debates the contentious healthcare issue.
