REPORTS SAY OJ WAS ATTACKED

OJ Simpson

Officials at Nevada’s Lovelock Correctional Center are denying reports that its star inmate, O.J. Simpson, was the victim of an old-fashioned jailhouse beatdown.

Simpson, serving a 33-year sentence for masterminding a 2007 memorabilia heist, was rumored to have been hospitalized after being attacked in a racially-motivated brawl.

But the assault and Simpson’s supposed hospitalization are news to Lovelock prison authorities, who insist the retired NFL star is still incarcerated without incident, reports local news station KPIX-TV.

GUMBEL REVEALS CANCER ISSUES

Bryant Gumbel

Bryant Gumbel revealed Tuesday that he has undergone surgery and treatment for lung cancer.

The 61-year-old host of HBO’s “Real Sports” revealed his condition to a surprised Kelly Ripa while subbing for Regis Philbin Tuesday on “Live with Regis and Kelly.” [Scroll down to watch clip.]

“They opened up my chest, they took a malignant tumor and they took part of my lung and some other goodies,” said Gumbel, adding that “the pathology on most of the stuff came back benign, but enough aggressive cells escaped the tumor that it warranted some treatment.”

Gumbel said he had preferred to keep his condition private and only told Ripa backstage to explain why he couldn’t dance with her during a segment on the show. He said he’s meeting with his surgeon and oncologist next week and hopes to be cleared soon so that he can play golf.

The tumor was not in Gumbel’s lung, but next to it, said Sean Cassidy, a friend of Gumbel’s and president of DKC, a New York public relations firm. Gumbel is not a smoker, he said.

Gumbel said he and his wife, Hilary Quinlan, had wanted to keep the news private. He said he had even kept his staff at the HBO sports newsmagazine “Real Sports” in the dark. HBO said Gumbel didn’t miss an episode, taping shows on both Sept. 15 and Oct. 27.

“We hope,” he said. “We HOPE, it’s over.”

BEBE IS CLEARED OF CHARGES

Bebe Winans

Reps for BeBe Winans said in a statement Tuesday that the gospel star “has been exonerated of all charges of allegations that he assaulted his ex-wife Debra Winans.”

His publicists at W&W Public Relations, Inc. stated: “Judge Gloria Dumas of the General Sessions Court for Metropolitan Nashville-Davidson County signed an order on Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, dismissing all charges with prejudice. With this order, this domestic matter is over and cannot be reopened.”

Winans is quoted as saying: “This has been a trying year, beginning with the death of my father. Even though this allegation has affected not just me, but also the entire Winans family, my children and certain aspects of my career, I chose to stay quiet because I knew the truth. To be exonerated of all charges shows the power of trusting in God, and is a wonderful Christmas gift for me and my children.”

Winans, a judge on BET’s “Sunday Best,” was jailed briefly in Tennessee last spring after his ex-wife accused him in an affidavit of pushing her to the ground during an argument over custody of their two children.

Last month, BeBe’s good friend Oprah Winfrey removed him from her show’s “karaoke challenge” until charges against him could be resolved.

In Tuesday’s statement, his reps said the allegations had “stirred up a fire inside Winans to begin a persistent effort to fight for the father or the man who may be going through the same struggle.”

Winans said: “This situation has made me a changed man. But it has also helped me see that there needs to be legislation that protects the rights of fathers when it comes to the custody of their children. All men are not deadbeat dads, all men are not abusing women. And it’s unfortunate that the legal system and society assume the worst before they hear the truth. My children are my first priority and I want and need to become the voice for the men around the world who are doing the RIGHT thing!”
