Arnellia Allen, of Arnellia’s in St. Paul is being honored as The Top Tavern of 2015. The award came over the weekend from the Minnesota License Beverage Retailers.

Gas prices are still on the rise in Minneapolis, although they held steady over the weekend.  Triple-A’s Daily Fuel Gauge Report shows the average price of a gallon of gas in Minneapolis-St. Paul is two-52.  That’s about 16 cents higher than a week ago, but a penny less than yesterday.  The national average is slightly up to two-32 a gallon.
Nobody won this weekend’s drawing, and that’s pushed the jackpot up to 70-million-dollars for this Wednesday’s drawing.  The numbers in this week’s drawing were 12-27-29-43-68 with a Powerball of 1.

Georgia state officials are planning a memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on some well-known high ground.  Officials have agreed to put up a memorial to Dr. King at the top of Stone Mountain east of Atlanta, just yards from where the Ku Klux Klan rallied decades ago.

Gloria Allred says she posed several questions to Bill Cosby in connection with a lawsuit filed by a woman who claimed the entertainer sexually assaulted her in 1974.

Kanye West is getting a word of advice for his upcoming presidential run by none other than President Barack Obama.  Obama opened a Democratic fundraiser in San Francisco Saturday with some advice for the rapper who was performing later at the event.  He said as president you’ll have to “spend a lot of time dealing with some strange characters who behave like they’re on a reality tv show,” adding that he’ll have “to be cool with that.”

Michelle Obama is celebrating the International Day of the Girl with a girls-only Spotify playlist.  The White House released the First Lady’s music playlist on Sunday, October 11th, a date the U.N. has designated as an annual date to promote awareness for gender inequality around the world.



The top spot at the box office is “The Martian” for the second week in a row.  The Matt Damon film earned 37-million-dollars to lock down the number one slot and bring its total to nearly 109-million-dollars.  Second place went to “Hotel Transylvania 2,” which has scooped up 116-million-dollars in the three weeks since its release.  “Pan” opened in third place followed by “The Intern” and “Sicario.”

A heavily seasoned, stew-like dish is in the spotlight on National Gumbo Day which is annually observed on October 12. Originating in southern Louisiana during the 18th century, Gumbo, which is traditionally served over rice, is a dish that typically consists of a strongly flavored stock, meat or shellfish, a thickener and seasoning vegetables.  The seasoning vegetables may consist of celery, bell peppers and onions which is a trio known in Cajun cuisine as the “holy trinity”. Gumbo is usually categorized by one of the following types of thickener used: The African vegetable okra

  • The Choctaw spice filé powder (dried and ground sassafras leaves) Roux (the French base made of flour and fat) Gumbo derives from a West African word for okra, which many believe is how the name and the ingredient as so intertwined.   Gumbo is believed to have been first documented in 1802 and was listed in various cookbooks in the latter 19th century.  It gained widespread popularity in the 1970′s when the United States Senate cafeteria added Gumbo to the menu in honor of Louisiana Senator Allen Ellender. Gumbo is the official cuisine of the state of Louisiana. The World Championship Gumbo Cook-Off is held each year in New Iberia, Louisiana.
