NICK TALKS ABOUT WEDDING MARIAH

In today’s new issue of People magazine, Nick Cannon explains how he met, fell in love and married Mariah Carey – all within the span of one month. It all started in late March when Carey cast him as her love interest in the video for her new single, “Bye Bye.” “From the first time we sat down to discuss the video at the Beverly Hills Hotel, we connected,” Cannon said in the May 19 issue, which features exclusive photos from the wedding. “We had so much in common spiritually, and we laugh at the same things. I didn’t have to put on my Mac Daddy suave mode. I was able to be myself with her. We are both eternally 12 years old.” They began showing up at various events together, sparking talk that a romance may be afoot. Carey kicked the rumors into high gear at the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of her movie “Tennessee,” where she sported a huge diamond on her left ring finger. Next thing you know, the 38-year-old singer and the 27-year-old actor were exchanging vows on April 30 at Carey’s Bahamian estate. Were Carey’s friends surprised? “Some were, but some weren’t,” she told People. “One thing (few people) knew was we got tattoos a few weeks earlier. So anyone who saw my (Mrs. Cannon) tattoo wasn’t surprised.” Oprah Winfrey told her audience Wednesday that she saw the “Mrs. Cannon” tattoo when Carey appeared on her show about a week before the wedding, but thought nothing of it. Cannon said, “To me rings are special and exciting, but tattoos mean more than anything. They’re forever and ever. They professed our love.” According to People, a dozen guests attended their sunset wedding, where guests feasted on Maine lobster and Dom Perignon champagne. The bride wore a gown by Nile Cmylo that showed off her curves and faded from off-white to pale pink. “My pastor Clarence Keaton flew in from New York,” Carey said. “The whole wedding was really beautiful and sweet. Being there with loved ones under the sky … it was a spiritual moment.”

NEYO PREPARES FOR MOTHER’S DAY

Ne-Yo will host a Mother’s Day brunch for 50 single and foster mothers from the metro Atlanta area Sunday to raise awareness of the need to drastically reform the U.S. foster care system.
“They need something special,” the 28-year-old singer/songwriter told the Associated Press. “So with the success I’ve been given, through the blessings I have, how could I not use it for good? This is a way to help people who deserve it — for both the mothers and children.”
While the invited mothers enjoy a performance from Ne-Yo, licensed child care workers are expected to provide activities for children between the ages of 1 and 10 in rooms separate from the event.

MORGAN FREEMAN HITTING ROCK BOTTOM

Morgan Freeman, 70, is looking to stretch his seasoned acting muscles into fresh territory with his new role in Broadway’s “The Country Girl,” a production of Clifford Odets’ 1950 drama, directed by Mike Nichols. After decades of playing such characters as the all-knowing cop, the principal with a heart of gold, the voice-of-reason sidekick and the ultra-cool president, the Academy Award-winner travels to the other end of the spectrum in “The Country Girl” to play an insecure man described as a “bleary bum,” reports the AP. Freeman plays Frank Elgin, a stage actor long past his prime who is battling both insecurity and an alcohol problem. When a juicy part in a Broadway-bound play comes along, a battle of sorts breaks out between his long-suffering wife (Francis McDormand) and a producer (Peter Gallagher) banking that Elgin will reclaim his acting chops. Freeman, who has twice played God on film, hopes the role will remind fans that he can also play characters with a less than noble core. “There’s a finite number of characters who are like that before you start repeating yourself ad nauseam. I think that’s the bigger danger than being Mr. Gravitas,” he says. You look at your last work and say, ‘That’s four characters in a row that said, did, thought, acted the same. They’re going to find me out any minute now.'”

CAREY SAID TO BE HAPPY

The paparazzi hasn’t seen or heard from Mariah Carey since her marriage to Nick Cannon, but those closest to her continue to come forward with first-hand observations about how she’s been doing since the nuptials.

She is very happy. I’ve spoken with her and she is superb. She is over the moon,” Carey’s friend, Vogue editor Andre Leon Talley, told People magazine. “I received an email from her [Monday] and she is so happy. She really sounds like someone on her honeymoon.”

Talley also gushed over Carey’s husband, stating: “I love Nick Cannon for Mariah. For Mariah, this is poetry.”

WILL SNIPES AVOID JAIL?

Wesley Snipes is hoping a judge will allow him to stay out of jail while he appeals his conviction and three-year prison term for failing to file income tax returns. According to papers filed in U.S. District Court in Ocala, Florida, lawyers for the actor argued that his appeal raises “substantial” questions that are likely to result in a new trial or a shorter prison sentence, and that he isn’t a danger to the community. They also argued that he’s not a danger to the community and he’s too famous to be a flight risk. The 45-year-old star of “Blade” was convicted Feb. 1 on three misdemeanor counts. U.S. District Judge William Terrell Hodges sentenced him April 24 to the maximum three years in prison. He was acquitted of two felony charges of conspiring to defraud the Internal Revenue Service as well as three other misdemeanor counts of not filing taxes.

WALTER’S STILL TALKING

Turns out Barbara Walters’ secret affair with a black senator isn’t the only juicy part of her new book “Audition,” and it wasn’t the only bombshell from the project dropped during Tuesday’s appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” The veteran television journalist finally spoke out about what really happened during the final two years of Star Jones’ tenure as co-host of the ABC morning show “The View.” Walters, an executive producer and co-host of “The View,” confirmed previous reports that viewers began to turn away from Jones after she got engaged to Al Reynolds and began using “View” airtime to promote her wedding vendors as part of a deal to use their various services for free. As for Jones’s sudden and dramatic weight loss, Walters told Oprah: “She decided to have a gastric bypass operation, but then she decided not to tell anybody. Then we had to lie on the set everyday because she said it was portion control and Pilates. Well, we knew it wasn’t portion control and Pilates.” Winfrey agreed, stating sarcastically: “We in the audience go, that’s some damn Pilates teacher!”

KARL MALONE IMPREGNATES 13-YEAR OLD GIRL

Former NBA great Karl Malone – “The Mailman” – reportedly fathered a child with Gloria bell – a girl who was only 12 or 13 years old when she became pregnant. Malone was 20 years old at the time. Amazingly, the child Malone fathered is Demetrius Bell – a recent top draft pick for the Buffalo Bills football team. It appears Malone played no part in raising Demetrius. Another amazing aspect of the story is how little media attention it has gotten. Based on a scan of media reports from around the country, the Washington, D.C.-based Taylor Media Services has been able to find one broadcast outlet (BET.com) and only two newspapers which have mentioned the story – the Buffalo News and the Los Angeles Times.

BEYONCE MAKES SURPRISE APPEARANCE

Beyonce made a surprise appearance at her husband Jay-Z’s Heart of the City tour stop Friday night at New York’s Madison Square Garden. In a regular part of the show, the rapper sits in a DJ booth and plays his classic hits to rhyme over, only to cut them all short with a “f**k that s**t.” He dismissed his wife’s song “Crazy in Love” in the same manner. But this time, the song kept playing and Beyonce appeared on stage to the song’s familiar booty-shake. Before leaving, she walked over to her husband, swirled and gave him a smile. Once she was safely off stage, Jay-Z laughs and says, “That’s some bulls**t right there. See the video here.

PRINCE TURNS AUTHOR

Prince will add “author” to his music and acting resume with the arrival of “21 Nights,” a book based on his 21 sold-out concerts last August at London’s 02 Arena. Due this fall from Simon & Schuster imprint Atria Books, the work is described as a “photographic essay” that offers “a rare glimpse into the life, lyrics, and mystique” of the artist. “Juxtaposing his dueling worlds of music and solitude, it will incorporate Prince’s evocative poetry and lyrics to new songs and other selections, and 124 full-color, sumptuous, never-before-published images by celebrated photographer Randee St. Nicholas,” Atria announced Monday. “21 Nights” will also come with a CD of after-hours jams, “Indigo Nights,” unavailable from any other outlet, reports the AP.

BIG DAY FOR DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES

The primaries in Indiana and North Carolina will be crucial in determining the Democratic nominee for President. For Sen. Hillary Clinton, this could be the day that determines whether or not she remains in the race. Personally, I hope that May 6 will be her last at-bat. Sen. Clinton has run an increasingly dishonorable campaign which, along with some of her policy ideas, make her the wrong choice for President. Barack Obama has always worked to bring people together across racial, ethnic, socio-economic and cultural lines. He continually reaches out to all groups of Americans with a vision of hope that includes everyone. The distortions, distractions and unfair characterizations of “bitter-gate” and the Rev. Wright affair could not shake the truth that Barack Obama is a genuine man of the people. His inability to fully connect with white, working class voters has less to do with him (for he has been sincere and consistent in reaching out) than it does with the reluctance of many within that demographic to accept a black candidate.
This sad fact is borne out by polls including the “Newsweek” survey showing that 19% of white voters believe America is not ready to elect an African-American President. According to that same poll, 41% of whites have reservations about voting for a black candidate. Despite this racism, Barack Obama has run an extraordinarily successful campaign that has inspired and united unpredictably huge segments of the American family. Hillary, on the other hand, has sowed the seeds of division. She falsely labeled Obama an “elitist” who was “out of touch” and “patronizing.” In doing so, Clinton indirectly played on the racist fears of white, working class folks whose attitudes are reflected in the “Newsweek” study and in exit polls after the Pennsylvania primary. By playing this negative race card Sen. Clinton did not only insult Barack Obama, she insulted and alienated many black voters who will be vital to the Democrats in November’s general election Obama’s commitment to unity and calm, rational problem solving extends to his ideas on foreign policy. Here is another critical area in which Obama will make a better President than Clinton. Sen. Clinton says she won’t negotiate with Iran unless that nation dismantles its questionable nuclear program. That’s tantamount to saying she won’t negotiate at all since Tehran will never agree to such a pre-condition. Sen. Clinton also said she would “totally obliterate” Iran if it attacked Israel. That’s the kind of bellicose rhetoric we expect from Bush, Cheney et al. But such wild threats have no place in a Democratic candidate’s mouth because they unnecessarily antagonize our enemies, thereby making the possibility of peace even more remote. Barack Obama is the only candidate who can move us toward peace to the Middle East. He knows that strong-but-rational negotiations with Iran (free of unrealistic conditions and Bush-style saber rattling) are necessary to reducing tension and solving problems in a way that will prevent a new war. This is what Presidents Nixon and Reagan did through their summit meetings with China and the Soviet Union. Finally, there is the issue of judgment. Sen. Clinton voted in favor of the Senate resolution that gave President Bush the power to decide when and if our nation went to war with Iraq. Make no mistake, this resolution was a cowardly act on the part of our representatives in Washington. The Senate sold us out by abdicating its Constitutional duty to act as a check on the power and ambitions of the White House. Sen. Clinton demonstrated weakness, an absence of fortitude and – yes – terrible judgment by supporting the war powers resolution. This lapse in judgment was far worse than anything Sen. Obama has been lamely accused of regarding the politically irrelevant Rev. Wright.

MOST INFLUENTIAL FOLKS OF COLOR

Filmmaker Tyler Perry, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and singer Mariah Carey join the likes of President Bush, the Dalai Lama and Miley Cyrus on Time magazine’s list of the world’s 100 most influential people. Announced Thursday, the final cut includes nearly 30 celebrities whose appearance was based on votes at the magazine’s Web site. Winfrey was cited alongside fellow “influential” entertainers Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt and Mia Farrow as “heroes and pioneers” for global goodwill. Others making the list include finance adviser Suze Orman, actor George Clooney, media mogul Rupert Murdoch, Russia’s Vladimir Putin, China’s Hu Jintao, and Obama’s fellow presidential nominees Hillary Clinton and John McCain.

GO DIRECTLY TO JAIL

For several hours on Monday, it appeared as if Foxy Brown was headed back to jail after she missed a court appearance and a judge issued a bench warrant for her arrest. Turns out that the court actually forgot to move her rescheduled hearing from Monday to Thursday and recalled the warrant after realizing the error. After an eight month stay on Rikers Island, Foxy is facing assault and weapons charges from her alleged Blackberry assault on a Brooklyn neighbor. Her lawyer Laura Dilimetin told TMZ.com that she got the date moved to Thursday, but the court mistakenly left Monday’s date on the calendar. On Thursday, Foxy, 25, will face assault and weapons charges for allegedly throwing her Blackberry cell phone at a woman in her Prospect Heights neighborhood after an argument over the volume of Foxy’s car stereo. The woman suffered swelling in her lip, loose teeth and swelling in her right eye. Brown, born Inga Marchand, is also due in court on May 8, where she is expected to reach a plea with the State Attorney in Florida on two misdemeanor assault charges stemming from a February 2007 altercation at the Queen Beauty Supply Store in Pembroke Pines, Florida.

NO VIEW FOR MARIAH ON MONDAY

Co-hosts on “The View” will not get a chance to grill Mariah Carey on her reported marriage to Nick Cannon last week. Her rep confirmed that she has pulled out of her scheduled taping this morning that was due to air on Friday (May 9). Carey and Cannon may not be talking, but friends and associates of the apparent newlyweds are speaking out about the rushed nuptials, which reportedly took place last week on Eleuthera, a Caribbean island next to Windermere, where Carey reportedly owns a home.

DIDDY GETS HOLLYWOOD STAR OF FAME

Sean “Diddy” Combs made his Hollywood Walk of Fame induction ceremony an event on Friday, complete with fans courted by an online video, advance interviews with the press and, of course, a Beverly Hills after party. “It’s also like my coming-out party here in Hollywood,” Combs told AP before the affair in front of the Hollywood-Highland complex. “I don’t have nothing to hide about that. If I’m going to come someplace, I’m going to make some noise, and you’re going to know I’m here.” Oscar winner Jamie Foxx led fans in a chant of “Diddy! Diddy! Diddy!,” and recited popular lines from his songs before officially introducing him to the crowd. In his acceptance speech, Diddy proclaimed: “Today is proof that if you believe, all your dreams can come true. I’ve gone from Harlem to Hollywood.” Friday night, the celebration moved to billionaire Ron Burkle’s sprawling Beverly Hills estate. Calling it an “intimate 250-person party” with “just very very close friends and family and people that I know throughout the industry,” the event reportedly cost $4 million. Combs is house-hunting in Los Angeles now, and plans to split his time between here and New York to pursue his acting career. To that end, he’s looking through scripts in search of the next role.

R. KELLY STILL X-RATED

The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that a witness in R. Kelly’s upcoming child pornography trial will testify that she had a three way sexual encounter with the singer and the allegedly underage girl depicted in a sex tape. The 41-year-old R&B superstar has pleaded not guilty to charges that he videotaped himself having sex with a girl thought to be 13 or 14. As part of the case, prosecutors claim to have identified the girl, who is now in her 20s. Kelly’s lawyers plan to argue — and the alleged victim will reportedly testify — that she is not the girl in the tape. But the prosecution’s new witness is expected to not only identify the girl in the tape, but testify that she was indeed underage at the time of the recording.

LATE JAMES BROWN IS THE DAD

An attorney for 6-year-old James Brown II says a DNA test taken in April has confirmed that he is the biological son of the late Godfather of Soul, report the Associated Press. Peter Shahid, an attorney for James Brown II, said Friday that the boy was tested in April before a South Carolina judge ordered a paternity test. The results of the court-ordered test have not yet been released, according to the AP. Tomi Rae Hynie, the boy’s mother and James Brown’s former backup singer, claimed to be the entertainer’s wife when he died on Christmas Day 2006.
Trustees handling Brown’s estate had claimed that her boy is not his son, and that she and Brown were never legally married. Neither the boy nor his mother were mentioned in Brown’s will.

FRICK OF FRACK FAME DIES

Frick of Frick and Frack fames has died. Yes, there were actually people name Frick and Frack.
Frick and Frack were two Swiss skaters who came to the U.S. and joined the original Ice Follies show as comedy ice skaters. Frick” was Werner Groebli (April 21, 1915 – April 14, 2008), born in Basel. “Frack” was Hansruedi (Hans) R. Mauch, born May 4, 1919 in Basel. Frick and Frack were known for skating in Alpine Lederhosen and performing eccentric tricks on ice, including the “cantilever spread-eagle,” created by Groebli, and Mauch’s “rubber legs” twisting and bending his legs while skating in a spread eagle position. Only a few skaters have successfully performed the duo’s routines since.
Frick and Frack found fame with the Follies, a revue promoted by Eddie Shipstad and his brother Roy, which began in 1936 and ran for almost 50 years. They also reached a worldwide audience when they began appearing in films, including the Monogram Pictures production “Lady, Let’s Dance” in 1944. Their association lasted so long, and they were at one time so well known, that their names became a household term in many languages.

Groebli died on April 14, 2008 in Zurich at the age of 92. David Thomas, one of his skating partners after Mauch retired, announced his death from complications after breaking a leg at a nursing home outside of Zurich. “Frick and Frack” has become an English slang term used in two ways. One is to refer to two people so closely associated as to be indistinguishable; the other way is as a term of derision for any two people, on par with calling one person a “Bozo” or three people “Stooges

KOBE WINS FIRST MVP

After 12 seasons in the NBA, Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant has won his first ever Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, the Los Angeles Times reported on Saturday ahead of an official announcement. The 29-year-old led the Lakers to the number one spot in the Western Conference, and on Sunday began a Western Conference semi-final playoff series against the Utah Jazz. The All Star averaged 28.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.84 steals during the regular season. He also averaged 33.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 6.3 assists in leading the Lakers to a first round sweep over the Denver Nuggets. Bryant helped the Lakers win three consecutive championships between 2000 and 2002. He is hoping to help his team get to its first NBA finals appearance in four years. The closest Bryant had previously come to the MVP award was third place after the 2002-03 season and again last year. He would be the fourth Laker to win the award, following Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson and Shaquille O’Neal.

ARE NICK AND MIMI MARRIED?

In just the past three days, rumors surrounding the relationship between Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon have gone from dating speculation, to engagement questions, to reports that the two are now husband and wife. Latina magazine reported yesterday that the couple exchanged vows Wednesday in a small ceremony on an undisclosed island. An unnamed source called it a “very impulsive” ceremony. Guests reportedly included Carey’s homegirl, Da Brat. Meanwhile, there are also rumors that the ring Cannon reportedly bought for Carey is actually the exact same engagement ring that he gave to his ex-fiancé Selita Ebanks one year ago during a spectacle-of-a-proposal in Times Square. Ebanks, a Victoria’s Secret model, told Us Magazine that she had nothing to say about Cannon’s alleged marriage. “I have no comment but wish them well,” she told the magazine. Nick and Mariah reportedly met in March when he directed the video for her new single, “Bye Bye,” and Us reported that an unnamed “inside” source said the romance was “hot and heavy.”

WALTERS “INFACTUATED” WITH ED BROOKS

Barbara Walters just taped an episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in which she revealed a past affair with an African American senator that lasted several years during the 1970s. A moderate Republican from Massachusetts who took office in 1967, Senator Edward Brooke was the first African-American to be popularly elected to the Senate. At the time of their secret relationship, the twice-divorced Walters was building a career in TV news as co-host of NBC’s “Today” show before moving to ABC News. Her affair with Brooke, which never came to light, had ended before he lost his bid for a third term in 1978.

Walters told Winfrey about a phone call from a friend who urged her to stop seeing the lawmaker. “He said, ‘This is going to come out. This is going to ruin your career,'” then reminded her that Brooke was up for re-election a year later. “‘This is going to ruin him. You’ve got to break this off.'” Winfrey asks Walters if she was in love. “I was certainly — I don’t know — I was certainly infatuated.” “Infatuated.” “I was certainly involved,” Walters says. “He was exciting. He was brilliant. It was exciting times in Washington.” Walters was on the “Oprah” show to plug her new memoir, “Audition,” which covers her long career in television, as well as her off-camera life – including the affair.

TERRANCE HOWARD IRON RICH

Looking to put a little more iron in your system? Have no fear, “Iron Man” is here and saving the day in a theater near you. The latest Marvel superhero film opens nationwide today with an impressive cast of award-winning actors such as Academy Award nom Robert Downey Jr. as billionaire industrialist Tony Stark, who wears the industrial suit that turns him into a superhero; Academy Award winner Gwyneth Paltrow who lends her talents to the film as Pepper Potts, Stark’s executive assistant. Also gracing the cast is Oscar nominated actor Terence Howard. Howard plays the role of Lt. Colonel James Rhodes, the military liaison to Stark Industries and pretty much Stark/Iron Man’s only friend. Marvel Studios’ Hollywood has been churning out record-breaking hero franchises including “Spider-Man,” “X-Men” and “The Fantastic Four,” so it’s no wonder, at least on the surface, that these veteran actors signed on. “Being in the comic book series, you look at the success of X-Men and the serious issues that were addressed in that, and the idea of being one of the first black superheroes. That’s pretty dam attractive,” Howard said of being attracted to this role. Howard admitted that he’s a Marvel hero fan, but said that he rarely spent money on a comic book.

DID BOBBI KRISTINA ATTEMPT SUICIDE?

The National Enquirer reported Thursday that Bobbi Kristina, the 15-year-old daughter of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown, tried to stab her mother during an argument – and then attempted to slash her own wrists. The tabloid claims to have gotten the news from a family member named Ann Davis, who said the episode took place a few days before the teen’s 15th birthday party. According to Davis, Bobbi Kristina “tried to stab Whitney” with a razor before turning it on herself. Davis said the girl has been troubled lately because she doesn’t want to live with her mother, who just performed in Tobago last weekend and has been living in Los Angeles while recording a new album. The Enquirer reported that Bobbi Kristina has been “running around and drinking and partying” in Atlanta while living with Whitney’s brother Gary and his wife. When Whitney came to Atlanta to confront her daughter, they had a heated argument that resulted in BK’s reported attempt to slice her mother before committing suicide.
She was immediately taken to a psychiatric ward for a three day stay, the Enquirer reported.
