LUDACRIS GETS A NEW LOOK

Ludacris is following in the steps of Busta Rhymes, who cut off his trademark dreadlocks after more than a decade earlier this year. Allhiphop.com reports that Ludacris will be sporting a short haircut in the video for his new single, “Money Maker.”

The rapper is scheduled to shoot the video today, July 31st, in Miami with Pharrell Williams. The song is the lead single from Ludacris’ new album, Release Therapy, which hits stores this fall.

The rapper said in a released statement, “Release Therapy marks a new phase in my life. I’m very excited to move forward and try new things. Life is all about change and this album will hopefully reflect some of my growth as an artist and a person. With that said, it only makes sense that I ‘shake things up’ and try something different. Who knows what I’ll come up with next?”

THE CLIPSE SET HALLOWEEN RELEASE DATE FOR NEW ALBUM

The Clipse will release their new album, Hell Hath No Fury, on Halloween (October 31st). The group’s Malice told MTV.com, “It’s just fitting. Halloween — let the demons loose. It’s a fresh album. There’s no way we could use the same album; we’re in a totally different place. You can hear what we’ve been through. It’s good to let people in on it. It’s been sitting up, and it’s good to let the cat out of the bag. The feedback has been good. It’s a classic. … It’s going to be reminiscent of classic East Coast hip- hop.”

The group’s other half, Pusha, added, “Sitting here with everybody else, I’m seeing it as everybody else is seeing it, all the writers and everybody’s eyes. Then just comparing it to everything else, it’s like we getting a musical album with different sounds, and it’s a good body of work.”

Since the group hasn’t released an album in four years, they’re pulling out all the stops for the new album. Pusha explained, “We’re doing Hell Hath No Fury the movie, and the soundtrack is all [our crew’s] Re-Up Gang music. We’re trying to get the soundtrack together. We already have great music. It’s just a family soundtrack. You’re not going to hear any other artist outside the family.”

Pusha added, “I’m not sure when we’re gonna start shooting, but we’re about to write it up. It’s basically like [Jay-Z’s film] Streets Is Watching. It’s gonna be a defining moment. It’s the album, seven videos off of it, narrated, and the story line is what we’ve been doing the past four years on hiatus. The videos fit around the story.”

Hell Hath No Fury features guest appearances by Pharrell Williams, Slim Thug, the Re-Up Gang and Roscoe P. Coldchain.

The latest single from the project is “Mr. Me Too.”

DILATED PEOPLES LEAVE CAPITOL RECORDS

Los Angeles-based rap trio Dilated Peoples has parted ways with Capitol Records after releasing four albums through the label. Group member Evidence told Ballerstatus.net, “There’s a lot of good people at Capitol. But, sometimes those aren’t the people that write the checks. However, I’m not bitter; I’m definitely ready to move forward…..Dilated Peoples is bigger than me. It’s bigger than Rakaa and Babu. That’s why it’s a beautiful platform to launch our solo projects.”

The group hasn’t decided who they will record for next but for the time being there’s a whole slew of projects to keep them busy. One such effort is a DVD titled, The Release Party, which will feature the behind-the-scenes look of the group making of their four albums, rare show footage, and exclusive songs. The DVD was directed by Jason Goldwach.

DJ Babu is also working on a new project titled, Duck Season Vol.3, while Rakaa has begun recording an untitled solo project.

Evidence’s solo project, The Weatherman, is slated to hit stores on March 20, 2007, on ABB Records. The project will feature guest appearances by Rakaa, Little Brother, Defari, and DJ Revolution. Dilated Peoples’ last release was this year’s 20/20.

The group’s previous offerings include: 2004’s Neighborhood Watch, 2001’s Expansion Team and their 1999 Capitol debut The Platform.

D.M.C. LAUNCHES CAMP FOR KIDS WITHOUT PARENTS

Last year Darryl “D.M.C.” McDaniels discovered that he was adopted and now the rap veteran is hoping to help adopted kids and those without parents through his Felix Organization. The non-profit is launching Camp Felix this year in the hopes of sending 150 children to summer camp for a life-changing experience.

D.M.C. told Allhiphop.com, “There are many children growing up without parents, in the foster care system or with parents who aren’t really equipped. These children do not have the opportunities we had, or parental hands to guide and support them as we did. We want to give them what so many of us are lucky enough to take for granted, new opportunities. New adventures.”

D.M.C. has partnered with The New York Foundling. The organization has given the rapper access to a 350-acre existing camp in Putnam Valley, New York for three weeks in August.

JIBBS EXPLAINS HIS EARLY START IN THE RAP GAME

St. Louis-based rapper Jibbs will release his self-titled debut album this fall on Geffen Records. The album will feature guest appearances by Chamillionaire, Chris Brown, the Pussycat Dolls, and D4L’s Fabo.

Jibbs is a teenager, which is young for a rapper, but he recently shared that he’s been perfecting his craft since he was eight. The rapper said: “I grew up watching my older brother do performances and make beats for a lot of local people around St. Louis. So I turned around, when I was seven-and-a-half, eight, I knew I wanted to do it.”

But the rapper shared that it was difficult to get his brother to listen to his raps at first. Jibbs said: “It was real hard to come about because my brother never really listened to me every time I told him I wanted to do it. You know he’s twice my age so he never really listened for real.”

The first single from the project is “Chain Hang Low.”

ASHANTI TO CREATE LIFE & STYLE GUIDE FOR DISNEY BOOK DIVISION

Multi-platinum recording artist Ashanti will pen a unique life and fashion guide, aimed at young people, that will be published in 2007. The singer’s book, titled Ashanti Style, will be published by Jump at the Sun, an imprint of Disney Book Group’s Hyperion Books for Children, which creates books celebrating diversity.

Ashanti Style is described as an autobiographical account of the singer’s life and style that will also include fashion and beauty tips and a photo insert.

Ashanti can currently be seen in theaters in the teen comedy John Tucker Must Die, which opened Friday, July 28th. She’ll also appear in Resident Evil 3: Extinction, due in the fall of 2007.

ANGIE STONE A CONTESTANT ON NEW SEASON OF ‘CELEBRITY FIT CLUB’

R&B singer Angie Stone will be one of the contestants on Season 4 of VH1’s weight-loss reality show Celebrity Fit Club. According to this week’s People magazine, the 44-year-old “U-Haul” singer suffered from sarcoidosis and gained weight from her medication. “I’m the biggest girl on the show, and the most likely to be in last place,” she admits.

Stone will attempt to lose 30 pounds during the run of the show, which also features singer Carnie Wilson, child star Tina Yothers, the Sopranos’ Vincent Pastore, The Love Boat’s Ted Lange, rapper Bone Crusher, NYPD Blue’s Nick Tuturro, and Playboy Playmate Erika Eleniak. The new season of Celebrity Fit Club debuts on Sunday, August 6th. Check local listings for times.

Stone’s most recent release was the 2005 career retrospective Stone Hits: The Very Best Of Angie Stone. Previous albums include 2004’s Stone Love, 2001’s Mahogany Soul, and 1999’s Black Diamonds.

Stone’s career has included performing in the hip-hop group Sequence and the R&B group Vertical Hold before debuting as a solo artist and songwriter. She says her experiences have given her even more credibility as an artist, as she told me: “Well, you gotta go back as far as 1979 with Sequence when I did the first hip-hop album, and then Vertical Hold and then Angie Stone. It’s like I’m evolving into an artist that has walked that walk. And I’m at this place right now where it matters or it’s important enough that I can have — because some people never get a ‘very best-of.'”

SUNSHINE ANDERSON READYING SOPHOMORE RELEASE

R&B singer Sunshine Anderson is preparing her sophomore release, Sunshine At Midnight, for a January release on her own label, Shining Star Incorporated, with distribution through Music World Music. Helping out with production are Dr. Dre and Raphael Saadiq, among others. The Charlotte, North Carolina-born singer will release the single “Something I Wanna Give You” next month, according to Billboard.

Anderson first signed with Music World, helmed by Destiny’s Child mastermind Mathew Knowles, back in 2004, three years after she released her Soulife/Atlantic debut Your Woman. That album featured the R&B single “Heard It All Before,” which peaked at Number Three on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

Her debut also featured a guest appearances by Anthony Hamilton and Kayla Parker, but Anderson — who was once managed by Macy Gray –goes it alone on her next set. “It’s been a long time so we just want everyone to focus on Sunshine again,” said the singer. “My vocals are raw and honest and pure, with a lot of emotion. So vocally not much has changed, but I’ve grown as a businesswoman. I’m more involved in this project and I was a little more inspired this time.”
